IN WORSHIP—FEBRUARY The church season of Lent begins this month. Lent is the forty-day period (not including Sundays) before Easter, and officially begins on Ash Wednesday. In the early church, new Christians used the time of Lent to prepare for their baptism, confirmation and first Communion, all of which occurred during the Saturday evening vigil before Easter morning. Today, many Christians use the weeks of Lent to examine how they are living as Christians. It is a great time to deepen your faith walk by using a new devotional, spending extra time in prayer, or even practicing the spiritual discipline of giving something up in order to spend more time with the Lord. Lent can be a time to remind us of what is really important in our lives, and to make room for what is truly needed and necessary for our happiness. Our sermon theme for Lent this year is "Last Words From the Cross". We will be studying the moving and meaningful final words of Jesus as he hung on the cross, dying for our sakes.

SPECIAL OFFERING FOR FEBRUARY ~ PROJECT BIG LOVE Our special offering this month supports the work of Project Big Love. This community outreach project for needy children and families will be on Saturday, ??? at the Mont Alto fairgrounds. Funds are needed prior to the event to purchase shoes, school supplies, and food to be distributed. Salem Church has been a supporter of this project since its inception five years ago. Please give generously! You can use your offering envelopes, in the "other" block write "Big Love" and the amount you wish to give.

The Mid-Atlantic Regional Meeting will be held on Saturday, April 14th, from 10 a.m. - 4 p.m. at Salem Reformed Church in Hagerstown. The churches of the Pen Mar area are joint sponsors of this event
(that includes us, folks!) We will be responsible for the registration table, and Pastor Lin will be a panel speaker and workshop leader. The theme is
