CurriculumCornerWe have provided an MISD 2017-2018

Academic Calendar FAQ on the district website which will hopefully answer any questions you may have about the calendar which was approved by the school board earlier this month. Here are a few of the questions: Why are we starting school so late? TEA officials shared with districts on January 31 that they recommended any districts currently going through the application process for becoming a District of Innovation should base those plans on the 2018-2019 school year and not the upcoming school year. Currently, districts cannot begin classes before the fourth Monday in August. Any district that begins before that day and their District of Innovation application is not submitted on time and/or not accepted, the school district will not receive ADA funding for the week(s) prior to the fourth Monday in August. This also allows the district to have some extra time to ensure all of our new facil-ities are ready for opening.

Why are staff members reporting to work earlier in August? With the opening of several new schools and the need for the district and campuses to establish procedures with staff members at new locations, we need to provide an opportunity to front load trainings and provide staff members with the opportunity to move in and unpack. In addition, teachers must work 187 days, and this calendar provides the opportunity for teachers to get out for the year before the first full week in June.

Why are we going back to a six-week grading period? In discussing the best scenario for our students, we found that students with more formative grading opportunities have a better opportunity to be successful in their courses.

Why is the first semester shorter than the second semester? In doing what we feel is best for our students, we took into consideration students that may transfer to another district, and providing the optimal time to prepare for mid-term exams. Many districts end their semesters prior to the Christmas breaks. We do not want students withdrawing from our district during this time without receiving credit for the semester, and we did not want students having to return from a two-week break and have to go straight into taking mid-term exams in January.

Why are students getting out on May 30, and not May 25? When calculating minutes with start times, our elementary campuses were short some minutes equivalent to two days.

What was the determining factor on when to start Christmas break? The comments on our staff survey were split down the middle. Half liked how the break was proposed, and half did not. As a compromise, we made December 22 as an early release day.

Mrs. Zaragoza, Mrs. Collazo and Mrs. Avelar have been leading the Latino Family Literacy program at South Marshall STEM Academy. The program is brought in from the Marshall ISD Bilingual/ESL Department. The literacy program is designed to establish family reading routines for Spanish-speaking and English-speak-

ing parents and their children at their school site. It involves family reading for Hispanic parent involvement, vocabulary development and English language development for parents and their children. The program engages the parents in reading with their children, reflects the experiences of Latino families, and is

centered around universal themes. The program will be expanding soon to Marshall High School.

MISD STAFF MEMBER OF THE WEEK

Lucy Long | Washington Early Childhood

“This week’s Patterson Chrysler Dodge Jeep Ram and Patterson Toyota MISD Staff Member of the Week is Lucy Long, Librari-an at Washington Early Childhood Center. Mrs. Fisher, Principal at WECC shared that she could talk all day about Mrs. Lucy! Her love of reading is evident in her story time and is shared with our young read-ers every day. She makes the library a fun learning experience with props and dress up to match the themes they are work-ing on in the classrooms and makes sure teachers have access to materials for those units. She goes above and beyond helping everyone around the campus. Congrat-ulations Mrs. Lucy Long! We are grateful for all you do to make MISD and WECC a wonderful place for students!”- Kristin Skinner, Patterson Auto Com-munity Liason

Photographed with Mrs. Long and her students are Mrs. DeDe Fisher, Principal at WECC, Rickey Clark, Gen-eral Manager with Patterson Toyota and Kristin Skinner with Patterson Chrysler Dodge Jeep Ram.

Since the beginning of the 2014-2015 school year, Patterson Auto Group sponsors the weekly “Patterson Auto Group MISD Staff Member of the Week” program, in which campus principals and department directors have the opportunity to nominate a teacher or employee from their campus or department on a rotating basis. This nominee is then met on Monday or Tuesday morning with a surprise visit from Patterson representatives, complete with balloons, fanfare, and a $50 gift certificate from Patterson. MISD has presented Patterson Auto Group with

recognition for the “Stand Up For Texas Public Schools” program established by the Texas Association of School Board (TASB) for their participation and sponsorship of the Staff Member of the Week program. “Stand Up For Texas Schools” is a program established by the Texas Association of School Boards (TASB) to recognize the generous assistance provided to public

school districts by businesses and other community organizations. Thank you, Patterson Auto, for helping us build a legacy -- together, in Marshall, Texas.
