Protection from bird and animaloutagesBirds and animals often intrude into substations and interfere withoverhead lines, causing faults bybridging air clearances. Outagesoccur especially in medium voltagesubstations, where conductor spacings were not designed for this risk. This is no longer a problem.The Raychem system of heat-shrinkable tubes, tapes and sheetsand pre-formed covers and barriersprovides a proven, cost-effective,easy-to-install, retrofit solution to bird and animal outages. It also alleviates the impact of electricitynetworks on wildlife. The heat-shrinkable products provide range-taking to simplify product selectionand cope with a wide variety of conductors, busbars, connectors,insulators and bushings.

The Raychem Insulation Enhancement SystemNetwork reliability is a priority for electrical utilities. Supply inter-ruptions add to maintenance costsand affect customer satisfaction.Substation faults are particularlyexpensive: equipment is often damaged and difficult to repair or replace; specialised post-faultmaintenance may be required, andsignificant customer-minutes lost. The Energy Division can help utilitiesavoid unplanned outages. For over 20 years our products have been protecting substationsand overhead lines around theworld, by retrofit upgrading of insulation levels. Retrofit upgrading means utilitiescan enhance system reliability bypreventing interruptions caused bybirds and animals or environmentalconditions.

The complete retrofit systemThe Raychem Insulation Enhance-ment System includes products for substations and overhead lines,for distribution and transmissionapplications. All products in the insulationenhancement system use the same Raychem crosslinking polymer technology that has given our electrical products superior performance and reliability for over 30 years.

Protection from environmentalconditionsEnvironmental conditions can dramatically affect the performanceof outdoor insulation. Flashovers canoccur during rainstorms or live-linewashing, even in light pollution. They also occur when contaminationbuilds up on the surface of an insu-lator above the design specification.This happens in many environments,including industrial regions, coastalareas and deserts. The solution is retrofit upgrading.Raychem Creepage Extenders pro-vide a unique, long term answer topollution flashovers, by permanentlyincreasing the creepage length andimproving the shape of the insulator.Raychem Booster Sheds provide asolution to heavy-wetting flashovers,proven by over 25 years of serviceexperience.

Wall thickness is controlled by theheat-shrink process. The pre-formedparts are quick and easy to install,and can even be custom designed.There is no need to derate busbarsor contacts.

Substations BBIT/BPTM busbar insulationtubingBBIT/BPTM heat-shrinkable tubingsare suitable for use on long runs ofrectangular or round busbars.These tubings shrink down to 40% oftheir original diameter and, due toexcellent flexibility, conform tightlyto a wide range of sizes. BBIT/BPTMtubings can be slid easily into place,even around several bends and onawkward shapes. Wall thickness iscontrolled by the heat-shrink pro-cess. Available in over 15 sizes ofbusbars from 5 mm to over 250 mm.BPTM is suitable for applications up to 24/25 kV. BBIT is suitable forapplications up to and over 35/36 kV.

HVBT busbar insulation tape HVBT heat-shrinkable tape is idealfor use on complex shapes andwhere busbars cannot be discon-nected, HVBT tape shrinks 30% longitudinally and an adhesive layer flows and seals the layers of tape during installation. As with the other components in thesystem, the adhesive does not bondto metalwork, allowing easy removalfor inspection and maintenance.Available in four widths from 25 mmto 100 mm. Suitable for applicationsup to 24/25 kV in two layers. A spiralformed tape is also available forease of use on overhead conductors.

HVIS insulating sheetHVIS heat-shrinkable sheet shrinks25% in both directions enablingrapid and reliable insulation ofT-joints, L-joints and difficult shapes.The sheet is a two layer laminatewith a heat-shrinkable backing and ahot melt adhesive. HVIS sheet is cutto size from a roll, held in placearound the connection with metalclamps and shrunk with a gas torchuntil the adhesive flows, sealing theinterfaces. Environmentally sealedjoints can be made using Raychemsealing mastic. Available in 10 mrolls or cut sheets. Suitable for appli-cations up to 35/36 kV in two layers.

Substations BCIC preformed coversA wide range of standard BCIC preformed covers is available forconnections for insulators, bushingsand busbars. Customised covers canbe made simply and economicallyby vacuum forming non-shrinkablesheet material. Standard covers canbe easily modified. Installation isvery simple often with no need todisconnect busbars. BCIC covers are held in place with UV-stabilisedplastic nuts and bolts, rivets or tie-wraps, and can be easily removedfor maintenance, or else sealed withRaychem sealing mastic. Suitable for applications up 35/36 kV.

BISG squirrel guardsThe BISG squirrel guard is a rigidpolymeric disc which fits betweenthe sheds of post insulators andequipment bushing to prevent animals, such as squirrels, frombridging the phase-to-ground clearance. The animal must climbonto the squirrel guard before touching the live conductor.Installation is quick and simple, with no need to disconnect busbars, and can be done live-line. One size is available to fit core diameters from 60 mm to 115 mm.Suitable applications up to 35/36 kV.

Overhead Lines BCIC bird protection capThe BCIC bird cap protects birds and other animals from live conduc-tors mounted on metal or earthedcrossarms. The flexible polymermeans that most configurations ofconductor attachment are easilyaccommodated. Installation is verysimple, and tool-free. Suitable forapplications on a wide range of different insulators up to 24/25 kV.

OLIT overhead line insulation tapeOLIT is an adhesive-lined heat-shrinkable tape which protects overhead lines against flashoverscaused by birds and animals, swinging conductors and inter-mittent contacts with trees. OLIT tape is preformed helically tofacilitate installation. The adhesivelayer melts when shrunk down,amalgamating the layers to form a wrap-around installation tube. OLIT tape does not adhere to metalsurfaces, allowing easy removal formaintenance. Suitable for applica-tions up to 24/25 kV in two layers.

Overhead line covers and kitsOLIC is a ‘clip-on’ insulating channelwhich provides flashover protectionfor overhead lines. OLIC-O sectionsclip over the conductor and are heldin place with UV stabilised plastic tie-wraps. OLIC-C sectionsclip over the conductor and are heldin place with a removable andreusable closure rail. SMOUV andSMOE insulation kits combine andadapt standard parts for specificapplications such as bushing insula-tion. Suitable for applications up to24/25 kV.

Pollution/Heavy Wetting HVBS booster sheds HVBS booster sheds are loose-fittingcollars for insulators and bushings,which are spaced from the porcelainskirt by short pegs and from the coreby tongues. Booster sheds increasethe diameter of the bushing in several places and break up longcascades of lightly contaminatedwater to prevent ‘heavy wetting’flashovers, which can occur duringlive-line washing or torrential rain.Available to fit insulator core dia-meters from 160 mm to 770 mm, or custom made. Suitable for applications up to 500 kV.

HVCE creepage extendersHVCE creepage extenders representa long-term solution to pollutionflashovers, by making a permanentaddition to the creepage distance.This increases flashover voltage andreduces leakage currents and surfaceelectrical stress. Creepage extendersalso improve the insulator shape and increase the strike distance.Heat-shrinkable HVCE creepageextenders are flexible polymericskirts, coated internally with a track-resistant mastic for bonding to the porcelain. These are available to fit insulators and bushings up to500 kV, with shed diameter 80 mm to over 390 mm.Wrap-around HVCE-WA creepageextenders are custom-made from asemi-rigid polymer, and are bondedin place with a pressure sensitivetrack-resistant mastic. HVCE-WAcreepage extenders are cold-applied.There is no need to disconnect to install wrap-around creepageextenders. These are available to fit insulators and bushings up to 500 kV, with shed diameter 100 mmto over 1000 mm.
