Part One. Introduction of International Education

1.1 Introduction of Hohai University

Hohai University, founded in 1915, is a key state university under

the direct administration of Ministry of Education of China. It is a

university with research and study of water engineering as its main task,

education of engineering subjects as its first priority and coordinated

development of many other disciplines covering engineering, science,

economics, management, liberal arts, and law. It is also among the group

of universities to benefit from Project 211.

Currently, there are 3,409 staff members and 46, 921 students. The

University consists of 19 colleges and departments. It has 12

post-doctoral programs, 78 Ph.D. programs, 233 masters programs, 18

engineering masters programs, 11 professional masters programs (MBA,

MPA, MSW etc.) and 51 undergraduate programs. Among them, the

major contribution of water engineering and civil engineering is the most

advanced in China, especially water engineering in the highest strength. It

also has 1 state key laboratory and 1 national engineering research center.

Hohai University is located in Gulou District of Nanjing (No.1,

Xikang Road), with two other campuses in Jiangning District of Nanjing

and Xinbei District of Changzhou, taking up an area of about 153

hectares.

1.2 Introduction of College of International Education

Hohai University is among the first group of universities that are

authorized by the state to award bachelor, master and doctoral degrees to

foreign students. The university has educated students from over 80

countries and regions in the world, most of whom have become senior

experts, scholars and officers in their countries.

Hohai University is proactively looking for international cooperation

opportunities to integrate qualified resources both in China and abroad. It

has established affiliations with over 80 institutions around the world and

is conducting an array of programs including joint training, mutual credit

recognition, short-term student and teacher exchanges, fellowships and

other academic visits.

Part Three. Residence, Visa and Insurance

3.1 Residence and Visa

International students whose study duration is no less than one year shall

apply X visa before entering ChinaOtherwise, you shall apply X or F visa.

Students holding F visa may stay for the duration

specified in the visa. In the event that they want to

continue studying in China, they shall apply for

residence permit before the expiration of the visa.

International students who go out of the campus shall carry the

passport and the student ID card with them in case of the

inspection by the public security bureau.

Go to College of International Education to transact the formalities

including temporary lodging registration, residence permit extension or

change, residence permit application, etc.

Go to the local police station and fill in Registration Form of Temporary

Lodging within 24 hours after accommodating in a new place and pay for

the application fee.

Apply to College of International Education for the residence

permit extension or change at least 2 weeks before the expiration

date so that the college may issue relevant supporting documents.

International students holding X visa

shall apply for residence permits within

30 days since the date of entry.

3.3 Insurance Policies for International Students

To meet the needs of the rapid development of international

education, optimize the study environment, maintain the campus stability,

improve the emergency mechanism and guarantee international students

legitimate rights and interests, Department of International Cooperation

and Exchanges of the Ministry of Education of China stipulated and

issued Interim Provisions on the Requirement of Insurance Purchase for

International Students in Institutions of Higher Education in 2007.

On the basis of the interim provisions, Hohai University stipulated

the following policies in the light of practical situation of the university.

3.4 China Ping an Insurance Claims Help

Policies purchased became effective since August 1, 2013. Full

implementation of medical management services and liabilities list as

follow:

Study more than 6 months must purchase the group

comprehensive insurance prescribed by the university,

others can choose other insurance. You must present the

insurance certificate upon registering.

The University shall purchase the group

comprehensive insurance for

Institute Scholarship and Jasmine

Jiangsu Government Scholarship whose

scholarship covers the insurance.

Other scholarship students and exchange

students have to purchase the insurance at

their own expense if the scholarship does

not cover it or the agreement does not

define the insurance should be paid by the

university. Self-supporting students shall

pay the insurance premium themselves.

International students who purchase the group comprehensive insurance

shall pay the insurance premium when they pay the tuition fee,

otherwise, you cannot register in the university

(1)If the Insured suffers from a major disease or a chronic disease

before the purchase of this insurance, the Insurer shall not bear the

liability of payment. The first 30 days of the first application for

insurance or non-continuous coverage is waiting period (observation

period). Where the issued is hospitalized during the waiting period, the

Issuer bears no liability. The treatment for continuous insured or the

Insured suffered from an accident is not subject to any waiting period.

(2)If the insured have any questions, please call 4008105119 EXT 1

for medical consultation due to disease or accident. The rescue doctor will

consult, diagnose, and provide medical guidance and precautions for

insurance claim. You cannot get compensated without reporting through

the 400 call or following the standard procedures.

(3)Medical organizations which are involved in all the foregoing

medical liabilities are limited to the public hospitals established within the

border of the Chinese mainland; the medical expenses incurred in

sub-branch of public hospitals, ward area for foreigners, ward area for

special treatment and needs, ward for special treatment and needs, ward

for high-ranking officials, or similar ward area or ward shall be excluded

from the insurance. After each seeing a doctor, you should save medical

record, original receipt, if meet the starting line, you should send the

records and receipts to the insurer. The concept-- Daily limit 600,

refers to he same department visits cost in the same hospital in the same

(4) If there are multiple medical records, the doctors written medical

records must be provided for each doctor visit; the name of the insured

the doctor to correct the name with official stamp; a copy of passport

provided for the claim must be valid, if passport expires, its copy cannot

be used as valid proof of identity; this year, after insurance program

change, the outpatient surgery costs before hospitalization and

post-hospitalization, outpatient are clinic responsibility; If the disease

does not reach hospital conditions, outpatient treatment can be, and you

choose to be hospitalized, hospital costs incurred claims will not get

reimbursed.

4.3 Campus Card and Bank Card

(1)Function of the Campus Card

Library: show the Card to the assistant when you borrow books in

the library. Student Dining Halls: pay with the Card. Education

Supermarket in our university: pay with the Card. University Hospital:

scholarship students can use this Card to pay for the medical fees which

are covered by their scholarships. Payment of Internet Account: you can

transfer money from your campus card with the Campus Money Transfer

Machine, and pay for the Internet account.

(2)How to apply for the Campus Card?

Step 1: Get Bank of China's Debit Card from Mo Gan Road Branch (.

To meet the need of internet connection between your Bank card and

the Campus card, we suggest you have at least one account in the

Bank of China, Bank of China's Debit Card is the only bank card that

allows you to transfer the money from your Bank of China Debit

Card into your Campus Card. Please make sure that only the card

from Mo Gan Road Branch has this function. If you do not have the

student card when you are applying for the bank account, please do

tell the cashier that you are the students of Hohai University.

Step 2: Go to the Settlement / Clearing Centre () in our university.

(3)How to open an account in Bank of China ()

Step 1: How to go to there?

Getting there: Take bus NO. 3 at Gate 1(main gate), from Xi Kang

Road to Mo Gan Road , about 2 stops. Or, take taxi to Mo Gan Road,

it will cost you RMB 11 Yuan (equal to 1.5 USD).

Step 2: Procedures for Account Opening.

i. Please take your Passport and Student Card to Bank of China. A

passbook may be got and a debit card may be applied for at the same time

at any branch of the Bank of China if a deposit slip is filled in and a

certain amount of cash (RMB 1 yuan at least) is deposited.

ii. At the time of account opening, you may choose the method of

withdrawal by password or by the passbook. If the method of withdrawal

password is chosen, you shall put on the spot a six-digit password into the

said savings account. The password is put in through the password device

on the counter and is unknown to any other person including the clerk of

the bank. The password is the key with which to withdraw and must be

kept in mind firmly and not leaked to others. Please be very careful: Put

the passbook and the password at the two separated places so as to avoid

false claim by others in case the passbook is lost.

4.4 Campus Activities

During the spare time, the college of international education will

organize various cultural activities for international students, such as New

Year Party, Cross-cultural Fun in Nanjing, The Chinese Bridge

Competition (Organized by CCTV), China Exploration, Sports Meeting,

Friendship Salon.( Those can be seen by attachment three). The

international students can also take part in the various activities of the

students associations.

The stadium, football field and basketball court are open to all the

students of Hohai University. The basketball museum, badminton hall,

table tennis hall and gymnasium are charging some fees.

At present, the kinds of scholarship can be applied include: 1)

The procedures of getting scholarship: 1) Get Bank of China's Debit

Card from Mo Gan Road Branch (), tell the staffs of bank

that you are the students from Hohai University. 2) Give your account

number of bank of China to teacher Ms. YANG. 3) At the end of every

month, you should check your bank account.

If you ask for leave, you should get the permission from the

international office.

Part Five. The other aspects

5.1 Daily life and Travel

Short holiday plan: there will be one day off in May Day, New Year's

Day and three Chinese traditional festivalsTomb-sweeping Day,

Dragon Boat Festival and Mid-Autumn Festival, respectively; three days

off in Chinese National Day. Please note the timing of university.

If you want shopping, you can take a bus to Xinjiekou and Hunanlu,

where there are discount houses and well-known hotels, especially

Nanjing local snacks.

Nanjing is one of Chinas four famous ancient capitals and cultural

and historical cities. Many a place deserves visiting such as Dr. Sun

Yat-sen Mausoleum, Ming Xiaoling Mausoleum, Zhonghua City-Gate,

Presidential Palace, Zhanyuan Garden (Taiping Museum), Gans Grand

Courtyard (Nanjing Folk Museum), Presidential Palace, Confucius

Temple, Nanjing Museum, Yuejiang Tower, etc. In spring, you can

enjoy the sight of plum on Meihuashan Mountain; in autumn and winter,

you can appreciate maple leaves in Qixiashan Mountain. Zijinshan

Mountain is a beautiful resort for relax and vacation all year around.

In addition, overseas students can travel to other places in their

spare time. Make sure that you bring your passport when visiting other

places and take good care of credentials and valuables. Tourist sites shall

be those sites that are open to foreigners. Without permission, you must

not visit those sites that are not open to foreigners. In violation of above

provisions, you will be punished by the public security organs in

accordance with provisions of the Law of the Peoples Republic of China On

Control of The Aliens.

No travel during the compulsory period of study. You can travel on

weekends, short holidays and summer and winter vacation.

5.2 Ticket Reservation

5.2.1 Train Ticket Reservation

(1) Telephone Booking

Telephone: 95105105.

Pre-sale period: 4-20 days (pay attention to the latest announcements

issued by Railways Bureau during the Spring Festival).

Time to collect the tickets: if booking succeeds before 12:00 am,

collect the tickets by 12:00 am the next day; if booking succeeds after

12:00 am, collect the tickets by 24:00 pm the next evening.

Places for collecting tickets: tickets can be collected in all the

railway stations and outlets, which is no longer restricted by Railway

Bureau.

(2) Online Booking

Online booking (online bookings are available for trains beginning

with letters "C", "D", "G", "Z", "T", "K", "L", "A", "Y" and The 1000 to

7598 train)

Note: 12306.cn Rail Customer Center is the only official website for

train ticket online booking .

Pre-sale period: 1-20 days (pay attention to the latest announcements

issued by Railways Bureau

(3) Train station window booking or outlets booking (outlets

booking needs to pay 5 Yuan and the pre-sale date is later than telephone

booking or online booking).

5.2.2 Plane Tickets

(1) Online Ticket Booking process

The first step: first of all, register an account number in the relevant

website and land it; Then, click on the "domestic air ticket" or

"international air ticket" according to your schedule; Then, choose a flight

type (back and forth, one-way or connecting flight), departure city,

destination city, date of departure and time of departure (if you have

chosen an inbound ticket, you also need to choose "date of return" and

"time of return"), fill in the entries of "ticket delivery city", "passenger

types", passenger numbers", choose the class of flight, click on "query

and booking"; Then, choose the flight you need, click on next, fill in

the registration information and contact information, and then choose The

ticket issuing time, distribution of itinerary and payment (credit card

payment can be used), and then pay for the ticket. After completion of

booking, the website will give you text messages via the mobile phone to

inform you of your booking. What you need to remember is the airline

flight company and flight number. Go to the airport departure hall directly

(2) Telephone Booking Process

1) Booking customers can use a telephone to dial any plane ticket

booking numbers. The numbers of tickets are without restriction.

Customers could book as many as they need. (note: the number of tickets

booked are dependent on the tickets of every flight class)

2) Two ways of taking tickets (its up to customers, but international

air tickets can only be delivered to your door at present and cant be

collected at the airport): free door-to-door ticket delivery service (delivery

time should be set at booking) and customers collecting tickets at the

airport in person.

5.3 Introduction to Nanjing Attractions

Dr. Sun Yat-sen Mausoleum is the mausoleum of Dr. Sun Yat-sen,

the father of the Republic of China and great forerunner of the Chinese

democratic revolution. In 1961, Dr. Sun Yat-sen Mausoleum became the

first national key cultural relics protection units; in 2007, it became the

first national 5A scenic spots. The Confucius Temple area has been

historically known as the cream of Qinhuai River scenic areawhich is

natural sceneries, gardens, temples, schools, streets, civil residences with

local customs and habits. With Confucius Temple ancient architectural

ensemble as the center and the Five-kilometer Qinhuai Riveras the axis, it

stretches from Dongshuiguan Park in the east to Xishuiguan Park in the

west (Shuixi City-Gate).
