EXECUTIVE SUMMARYEXECUTIVE SUMMARY

Banking system of Bangladesh has gone through three phases of development

Nationalization, Privatization and lastly Financial Sector Reform. Mercantile Bank

Limited (MBL) started its journey in the financial sector of the country as an investment

company back in May 20, 1999. The company operated up to 1999 with 9 branches and

thereafter with the permission of the Central Bank converted in a full-fledged schedule

private commercial bank in June 2, 1993 with paid up capital of Tk. 39.00 crore to serve

the nation from a broader platform. The whole report has been prepared based on the

information taken from the division of Mercantile Bank Limited, i.e., foreign Exchange

Division.

General Banking comprises of account opening, bills, remittance, clearing, cash and

computer sections. Through these sections, it establishes Banker customer relationship,

collects bills for customers, remit funds of customers from one place to another, honor

cheque drawn on this branch. General Banking department provides these services in a

faster and better manner.

Foreign Exchange department plays a vital role in facilitating export and import of the

country. It comprises of Export, Import and Foreign Remittance sections. Through these

sections, it opens Letter of Credit, negotiates foreign bills, advises Letter of Credit, and

provides different types of loans like, Loan against Trust Receipt, Loan against Imported

Merchandise, Packing Credit etc. to its customers. The practical activities of different

desks what I have done is outlined in this Report. Various rules and regulations, policies

and procedures relating to different activities have also been enumerated here.

Though foreign remittance is one of the major parts of bank’s income but the loans and

advances and other loan schemes play a vital role in success of Mercantile Bank Limited.

Mercantile Bank Ltd. Has offered the clients deposit scheme, loan scheme, remittance

service and the like.

From 1999 to 2009, it has made strong initiative in banking sector.
