The machines the Andean Indians used to man-ufacture practical ponchos are the very same machines with which Inti currently produces its finely-cut tweed jackets. The age-old craft still runs in their blood, although they now work the wool into a different jacket.

A new jacketDe machines waarop de indianen uit het Andesgebergte van oudsher hun rechttoe rechtaan poncho’s vervaardigden, zijn precies dezelfde machines waarop Inti vandaag de dag de fijn gesneden tweedjasjes laat maken. De Taguapalm in de regenwouden van Ecua-dor, Colombia en Panama geeft wel vijftien tot twintig kilo noten per jaar. Nadat die zijn uitgedroogd, zijn ze zo hard als ivoor en lenen zich uitstekend om kleding met knopen en mensen met sieraden te sieren. Dat de Tagua-palm door de vraag naar zijn vruchten weer een bron van inkomsten is, maakt het kappen van regenwouden minder noodzakelijk. Een ontwikkeling die Inti van harte ondersteunt.

The Tagua palm tree in the rain forests of Ecuador, Colombia and Panama produces as much as 15 to 20 kilos of nuts a year. After the nuts have dried they are as hard as ivory, making them perfectly suitable for decorating clothes with buttons and adorning people with ornaments. The demand for its fruits has made the Tagua palm a new source of income, coun-tering the need to cut down rainforests. This development is supported wholeheartedly by Inti.

Far from the inhabited world, Peruvian Indian women are sitting in groups. Grandmothers, mothers and children, laughing, talking, work-ing. From ecologically dyed wool they embroi-der beautiful belts by hand. Little paintings for the waist, produced using a traditional technique. The belts crafted by these women tell a highly detailed, accurate and beautiful story. Listen to it when you wear one!

Oma’s, moeders en kinderen, pratend, lachend, werkend: van ecologisch geverfde wol borduren ze met de hand prachtige riemen. Schilderijtjes voor om het middel, vervaardigd met een tradi-tionele techniek. Daarmee vertellen de vrouwen uiterst verfijnd en precies in intense kleuren een prachtig verhaal. Luister maar als je het draagt.

The Spanish brought the Roman-Catholic faith to South America, where it has found and retains a perfect breeding ground. The indigenous population quickly embraced the new religion, integrating their own customs and traditions. Thus Catholicism manifests itself in a host of ways, from varied representations of the Virgin Mary to figurines and crosses. What persists is an unwavering faith in their religion.

De Spanjaarden brachten het rooms-katholieke geloof naar Zuid-Amerika, waar dit geloof een goede voedingsbodem vond en blijft vinden. Als snel omarmde de inheemse bevolking deze religie en integreerde de eigen gebruiken en tradities ermee. Daardoor kent het katholisme er veel verschillende uitingsvormen, van uiteenlopende Maria’s tot beeldjes en kruisjes. Wat was en blijft, is het heilige geloof in hun religie.

The Peruvian wool is shipped to an Ecuadorian plant for processing. Here the workers process some ten thousand kilos of sheep hides a year on age-old spinning machines at precisely the thicknesses Inti requires for its products. The strings of spun wool are then dyed using the rich gamut of colours which so strongly typifies Inti’s range.

De wol komt van Peru en wordt verscheept naar en verwerkt in de fabriek in Ecuador. Daar spinnen ze jaarlijks de circa tienduizend kilo schapenvacht op heel oude machines in precies de verschillende diktes die Inti nodig heeft voor haar producten. Om de draden daarna te verven in het rijke kleuren-palet dat het Inti-assortiment zo typeert.

Inti is owned by two people: Leon and Anita. Although each has their own individual qualities, they share a passion for travel, people and adventure. Their collaboration, friendship and love for South America pervade the world they have built for themselves. Anita: “We have become ingrained in the lives of these people.” Leon: “These people have assimilated into our lives.”Together: “This is our life.”

Inti is tweemaal eigen: Leon en Anita. Individueel hebben ze hun eigen kwaliteiten; samen delen ze de passie voor reizen, mensen en avontuur.
