• Seven ANSYS nCode DesignLife processes are predefined as WB

analysis systems

– Stress-Life (SN) – uses time based FE stresses

• constant amplitude loading

• time step loading

– Strain-Life (EN) – uses time based FE strains




– Vibration – uses frequency based FE stresses

• requires add-on license

• Each glyph has an unique set of properties that control its behavior

– to access properties > RMB on Glyph > select “Properties”

• similar to Details Window in ANSYS Mechanical

• re-run process to use new properties

• Glyph properties not accessible under the Properties Tab can be

accessed using “Advanced Edit”

– Analysis Engine > RMB > Advanced Edit

• Processes and data are separate items

• Processes include glyphs, pipes, and properties

– do not contain data

– can be saved as a .flo file

– seven predefined processes are .flo files

• Data flows through the process

– time series, histograms, FE results, etc.

• DesignLife database file (.fdb file) contains process and data

– saved and archived with WB project

• Most DesignLife processes are built around five basic actions

– “5 box trick”

– some actions are performed by one glyph – some require several glyphs

• Material mapping links analysis engine to material library

– Analysis Engine > RMB > Edit Material Mapping

• DesignLife material library is integrated into Engineering Data

• material information is automatically transferred to DesignLife

• does not require any user action

Customer Training Material Load Mapping

• Load mapping converts FE results into stress/strain histories for use

in fatigue calculations

– FE analysis provides results for distinct sets of loads

– load mapping determines how the stresses/strains vary

• fatigue life is controlled by cyclic stresses

• Constant Amplitude, Time Series, and Time Step are common load

mappings used with both stress-life and strain-life fatigue

– constant amplitude loading

• stresses/strains are assumed to cycle between minimum maximum values

– time series loading

• stress/strains are paired with time series loading channels to generate

stress/strain histories

– time step loading

• FE stresses/strains are used directly

• With predefined ANSYS nCode DesignLife processes, load mapping

is automatically defined

– Analysis Engine > RMB > Edit Load Mapping

• CAE fatigue analysis is performed by the Analysis Engine glyph

• Unique glyph for each fatigue analysis method

– stress-life

– strain-life

– vibration

– spot weld

– seam weld

– virtual strain

• With predefined ANSYS nCode DesignLife processes, analysis engine

is automatically defined

• Processes are executed using the “VCR” buttons on the tool bar

– runs one glyph at a time

– runs the entire process

• “In Process” light turns red as each glyph processes data
