Dear Members,
We very much hope that you can join us for the
EuPIA Annual Conference 2017, which this year
is being held in the elegant resort of Marbella,
situated in the foothills of the Sierra Blanca on the
Costa del Sol in southern Spain. Overlooking the
Mediterranean Sea and with a history stretching back
to Roman times, Marbella is a city of two distinct halves – modern Marbella,
known as a playground for the rich and famous, and the Old Town or Casco
Antiguo. The latter includes a number of cultural attractions such as the
Museum of Contemporary Spanish Engraving, which contains a collection of
prints by 20th century artists including Picasso, Miró, Dalí, Tàpies and
Chillida amongst others, as well as an exhibition hall dedicated to teaching
engraving techniques.
For this year’s conference programme, we have brought together another
group of authoritative speakers to offer their insights on a range of important
topics and trends and, we hope, to stimulate interesting discussions around
the ongoing challenges and future opportunities for our industry. We’re also
delighted to announce that this year’s keynote speaker will be Pedro Nueno,
Emeritus Professor of Entrepreneurship at IESE Business School.
As in previous years, there will of course also be time to continue the
discussions during the social aspects of the programme and make new
acquaintances or renew old ones.
I look forward to welcoming you to what I’m sure will be another absorbing
and successful conference.
Yours sincerely,
Herbert Forker, EuPIA Chairman,

PROGRAMME FOR ACCOMPANYING PERSONSTHURSDAY 30 MARCH 2017
GUIDED TOUR OF MARBELLA AND PUERTO BANÚS
Famous all over the world as a favourite meeting point for international jet setters, the existence of modern Marbella is mainly
due to one man, Prince Alfonso Hohenlohe, who discovered the town when his Rolls Royce broke down there in the early 1950s.
Charmed by the area, in 1954 he opened the Marbella Club Hotel, which then became an attraction for movie stars, business
executives and the European aristocracy. Thanks to its celebrity status and its microclimate (an average annual temperature of
18 °C/64 °F), Marbella remains one of the most popular tourist resorts on the Costa del Sol.
The more sedate Old Town or Casco Antiguo is based in and around Orange Square or ‘La Plaza de los Naranjos’ which is
surrounded by three historical buildings: the town hall, built in 1568 by the Catholic Monarchs in Renaissance style, the Mayor‘s
house, which combines Gothic and Renaissance elements in its façade, with a roof of Mudejar style and fresco murals inside,
and the Chapel of Santiago, the oldest religious building in the city, built earlier than the square and believed to date from the
15th century. Offering a completely different experience, here you can stroll along cobbled streets and visit small boutiques, art
galleries, some excellent restaurants and local tapas bars.
Opened in 1970, Puerto Banús is a luxury marina and shopping complex that is popular with international celebrities. With
berths for over 900 yachts, including those of the King of Saudi Arabia and several of the world‘s wealthiest individuals, the
marina is surrounded by streets lined with luxury designer boutiques. Puerto Banús also features a three-ton statue of a rhinoceros
by Salvador Dalí, which was placed there in 2004.
FRIDAY 31 MARCH 2017
GUIDED TOUR OF MIJASA jewel of the Costa del Sol, the pretty little village of Mijas sits comfortably on the mountainside at 430 metres above sea level.
One of Andalusia‘s most beautiful white-washed villages and famous for its unique donkey taxis, Mijas offers stunning views
across the Costa del Sol, Gibraltar, the Atlas Mountains and over to the African coastline. Of cultural interest are the shrine
of the Virgen de Peñas, which was excavated in the sixteenth century by Mercedarian friars, and the Iglesia de la Inmaculada
Concepción, from the same era built on an ancient mosque. The hermitages of San Sebastian and Nuestra señora de los Remedios,
both eighteenth century, are also worth a visit as is the Centro de Arte Contemporáneo. Opened in 2013, this museum houses the
second largest collection of ceramics by Picasso in the world, as well as other works by Salvador Dalí and Miró.
