• First used in the 1960 for the US Military’s Research projects

• Tools: electronic mail, online gaming, online messaging, video chat, file sharing.

What is Social Media?

• “Social media are online communications in which individuals shift fluidly and flexibly between the role of audience and author. To do this, they use social software that enables anyone without knowledge of coding, to post, comment on, share or mash up content and to form communities around shared interests.”

Facebook Started in 2003 by Harvard student Mark Zuckerberg as a tool to stay connected to college friends.

As of February 2009 it has over 250 million users world wide
