Supporting Local Music

From James:

Thank You for picking up the second

issue of The Jam Magazine, what a

reception from last issue, I would like to

put out a big thanks to everyone who

supported what I am trying to do for the

local music scene and it‟s musicians in-

volved. We‟ve got a Jam packed month

ahead with the likes of Luke Carra, Mick

Hart, GRINSPOON!, are just to name a

few, but if you want my advice, get out

there and see as many bands and art-

ists as you can because they are all

worth your time in seeing, and we need

you to build Port Macquarie‟s and The

Mid North Coast‟s music scene.

Remember the more people that go and

see live music the more bands will be

attracted to our area. Thanks again for

your support and I hope you have a

cracker of a month!

ELI WOLFE

GIVES A PLACE IN HIS WORLD

TOWN GREEN INN 16/07/10

Folk singer, Eli Wolfe entertained audiences with an

intimate performance at the Town Green Inn on

16/07/10 as part of his “Community Australia Tour”.

Eli Wolfe is a singer/ songwriter who‟s musical style car-

ries the acrobatic song writing and vocal skills similar to

that of Jeff Buckley. Eli‟s personal performance showed

hints of a T-Rex feel, a mood conjured from the spirit of

Jim Morrison and the guitar work and song structure that

can be found on the album “Led Zeppelin IV”.

Eli played to a room of about 20—30 people and with the

way he interacted with the audience it was like he was

just playing to a group of friends, reinforced again by the

time he gave to all his fans who approached him after the

show.

Eli Wolfe is a free spirit, who seems to be a vessel of

creativity. There is a hint he may be returning to our area,

and I would love to see him in full force with a back up

band, (one can hope). But one thing is for certain, Eli

Wolfe is an artist we can expect big things from.

CD Review:

Eli Wolfe “Pre Album Release”

Eli Wolfe‟s “Pre Album Release Tour CD” gives us a

great insight as to what is coming on his full length debut

album. Normally I would say that an artist‟s recording

does not reflect the live experience, but in Eli‟s case this

not only does that, but also shows the potential that is

coming from Eli. Tracks : “It Don‟t Matter To Me”, Earth

Friend” and “My Place in This World” are fluent folk

songs that best describe Eli‟s intimate performances.

There are two cover songs on the CD:

Blue Sunday (The Doors):is a haunting remake that is so

suited to suited to Eli‟s hypnotic and mesmerizing vocal

style, it is scary.

Hurt (Trent Reznor): A dark song that is a contrast to Eli‟s

otherwise uplifting themes, but he performs it so

convincingly that it seems that the song was written only

for Eli.

Jade Horse Immortal Rider: What a song!! This is my

favourite track and is such a fitting end to the CD,

because it is such an applicable conclusion, but it also

leaves you wanting more. Jade Horse Immortal Rider is

an epic folk song (if there is such a thing!) that belongs to

the back catalogue of Led Zeppelin, in a way that is on

par with Wolf Mother's efforts.

Eli Wolfe's “Pre Album Release Tour CD” is simply a

tease for what‟s to come, and I strongly suggest email Eli

or Dominique ([email protected]) and arrange to buy

one, because it is a treasure and I don‟t think it will be

around for long.

James Schaefer

A word with Eli Wolfe

What made you decide to take your music on the road?

Well going out and playing in smaller shows, like mates going “c‟mon and

play” you know so we play, then get a bit further, go to another show and

play, go down the coast a bit further and keep growing like that so when I

found that people enjoyed it, like instead of staying at home, I just looked at

it plainly, look it's cool I love playin‟, know one knows if they dig your music

or what your doing anyway, that‟s humbling and pretty beautiful when people

dig it so, when that sort of was the vibe and it kept growing from that and got

more venues and kept playin and playin some more, and it's the feedback,

so it‟s kind of like a growth of reciprocated kind of energies I suppose, I was

diggin‟ playin‟, get the feedback back and it sort of grew and then all these

little pocket tours around the place and then I just joined the dots you know,

and now I just finished an album, which is on press now, so we gotta work

out what we‟re gonna do as far as releasing it, but you know the first single

“She‟s Like an Ocean”, I mean that‟s going out to community stations, it

hasn‟t been released in shops or nothing , Probably work it out in October I

suppose, and yeah we‟ll take it on the road with us, and now we‟ve gone all

the way around the country you can say boom, here‟s an album now, you

can go back to the places again, or you‟ll suss it out in October, but our life

plan as far as we know man, book shows across now back over across the

top of Australia, and down to Perth by Mid October.

Tell us a little about yourself

Personally playing music and incorporat-

ing that with poetry, I love writing, I love

imagery, I love drawing, I like things that

evoke imagery, like dreamscapes, as well

as tangible, empathy relates vibes and

songs, it‟s like a whole communication....

It‟s communication basically, image and

sound.... Incorporate that into your album,

I love the whole experience and then

playing it, each time I play it‟s like a little

spark, a little zone, you sort of like pre-

sent in the now, and everything leads to

that point for maybe one hour or three

hours or however long you are playing...

Your in that special space then afterward

it‟s like wow what happened you know.

And you really feel it‟s like a positive thing, I really enjoy it the process of it.

What are your songs about?

A lot of them are empathy based like you‟ll hear, an exchange between peo-

ple you know or you‟ll see something that affects you, you see something

man and your like wow man that‟s full on and then it‟ll simmer away in the

back of your mind somewhere and then you‟ll just pick up the guitar three

weeks down the track somewhere, and then this metaphoric story will just

translate, that‟s how it works for me anyway, like kind of that vibe... So you‟ll

have just general emotions like an emotive quality (to them), like a root res-

inous, that‟ll pop through and then, go with some music and that will evoke

words..... And before you know it BANG it (the song) pops out and then wow

it feels good you know.

What advice do you have for aspiring musicians looking to enter the

live music scene?

Just keep playing, and play, keep putting what you are feeling inside into

your guitar and into what your singing and saying, and that‟ll be... That‟s

your essence you know what I mean, so if you just play and stick to that, if

you just focus on what your feeling, that turns up in some songs and that's

what carries it forward you know. Play what‟s true to you and you‟ll connect t

people, we‟re all the same so they‟ll pick up on that feeling that you‟ve been

feeling.

The Geoff Turnbull Band

The Geoff Turnbull Band is a roots and rock band from Coffs Har-

bour that bear such a high calibre of talent that I think we should be

proud to call them local. Geoff Turnbull has clocked up over 500

km‟s in touring over the past five years, playing at festivals such as

Festival Of The Sun, Day In The Vines, Trial Bay Music Festival,

Port Fairy Folk Festival, Nimbin Mardigrass, Brisbane‟s Urban Blues

& Roots festival, Castlemaine State Festival, Newcastle Blues Festi-

val, and was awarded „Best New Talent‟ & „Best Male Vocalist‟ at

the Newcastle Blues Festival „07‟ . The music of Geoff Turnbull is a

fast paced roots music with a psychedelic undertone to it and has

been dubbed by “Faster Louder 2005” as the next roots figurehead

of Australia. With a support portfolio with artists such as Hilltop

Hoods, Beautiful Girls, COG, Gotye, Lior, The Fumes, Kid Confu-

cious, Butterfingers, Clare Bowditch, Saritah, Dallas Frasca, Vasco

Era, Ash Grunwald, The Mess Hall, Carus, Mick Hart and four solo

albums under his belt, Geoff is powering on with his new album

“Transit Bandit”, named in honour of his excessive touring. Once

again it is a privilege to have such a talent listed as a local band. If

You are a venue reading this, it would be great to have him play a

bit closer to home. Listen to Geoff Turnbull at:

Track 7: Crawl No More

The Influence

Young Punk band from Taree, I ran into these guys at

The Hastings Hotel in Wauchope a couple of months

ago, playing to the few patrons that were there on the

night. They had a killer sound that actually pulled me in

from the street (well the bottle shop next door), most memorable was their rendition of Johnny B. Goode. Formerly known as

“Over the Influence”, The Influence have built a strong following in their home town of Taree, no doubt due to their solid shows

and professionally recorded EP “Please Take Me” . They have played at numerous festivals and have supported The Beautiful

Girls, I‟m not sure what the future holds for these guys but it would be good to see them go a long way and hopefully more of

them around the Port Macquarie area.

DEVIL GOT A HOLD

THE MICK HART EXPERIENCE

FINNIANS 06/08/10

Internationally recognised Acoustic Rock/ Blues & Roots artist, Mick Hart bought his brand of Rock „n‟ Roll

to Finnians Irish Tavern on Friday 06/08/10 in support of his two new releases “Where I Go” and “What Lies

Beneath”.

It was a laid back show custom made for the audience, consisting mostly

of covers of old classics, mixed in with Mick‟s originals. Mick put out per-

suasive versions of classic hits such us Losing my Religion (REM) and Fa-

ther and Son (Cat Stevens), and the highlight of his cover songs—Riders

on the Storm (The Doors) played in a folk style that transformed into a wild

climax of blues driven and chainsaw style guitar solos.

In my opinion, it was Mick‟s originals that made the night. They were an

accomplished balance between his Folk and Blues/ Roots Rock styling's,

varying songs like “Where the word is not enough” (this song received na-

tional airplay on Triple J) to his newer heart racing rock tracks; “Devils got

a hold” and “Where I go”, it was in these songs we were able to observe

the real Mick Hart Experience that has gained him international recogni-

tion.

I was a little disappointed that I didn‟t get to hear more of Mick‟s original

music, but Mick played for the crowd and majority rules, the patrons of Fin-

nians had a blast and Mick was able to pick a set list that would suit them

and give them a good time, and he hit the nail on the head.

Mick Hart is an overly talented Roots and Folk artist and I do hope to have

him back in town again.

hold of me. Taken

able on iTunes.

A Word with Mick Hart

How long have you been playing?

Too Long...... I started guitar when I

was like ten and seriously, and you get

a few years under your belt you just

play in school bands, play at parties

and things and just kick on from there,

you know it‟s been more than 20 years.

How long professionally?

The whole time like I kind of started

pretty young and it sort just kicked off fairly early and I sorta just followed it

basically so...... I was in a band called The Squealing Pygmies before I went

solo. And we were a three piece rockin thing and that had some success for

a couple of years, a couple of songs on Triple J and stuff like that, and the

guys went their separate ways, and I just sort of naturally kept writing songs

and that's how the solo path sort of came about, and I just got some mates

to come around and play and it sort of kicked off from there and that's been

going on for more than 10 years I guess, next year will be the ten year reun-

ion of the first album.

So that‟s 10 years of full on touring as

well?

Yeah I started, I kind of first went overseas

like late 1997, was the first time I went

over for a little bit, and then started doing

heaps a year later and then I actually

ended up moving over the in 2002 for a

year, lived in France just cause it was

going off over there and I was like man it

would be pretty cool to stay, been there for a year, came back home, done

my third record, hung out here for a year and sorta just “I feel like going

back” I‟m free enough to do it, opportunity of a life time, so went back,

thought I‟d be maybe six months, ended up staying like four years. Like

living in France, touring in France, Belgium, Germany, Poland, UK. Once

you build up a following you just keep tapping into it so, just rolling around on

the road, it‟s great. But having said that, a long time away from home, dis-

connected me from here a bit being gone so long, it‟s good to be back and

hit the road again.

What inspires you to write songs?

Really it‟s just truth, writing about life, not just my own, stuff and stories

around especially with my travels, you become a lot more observant about

life around you, you start you know taking it all in, sort of hear other people‟s

stories, tap into that, loads of your own stuff as well, but it's all kind of like

real truth it‟s like a real journey, the whole six albums of stories from here,

there and everywhere, wrote a few songs in the last couple of albums about

homeless people, on the streets over there, it‟s definitely here as well you

sort of notice it more when your away from home, out of your comfort zone,

so sort of writing about things like that, like awareness kind of stuff.

What's life like as a professional musician?

Yeah it‟s great! It keeps you young, I mean it gets tiring on the road, but it‟s a

great lifestyle, especially doing your own stuff, singing and playing, travel

with that, you just feel really lucky to do it so, but I‟ve done it for a long time

and probably don‟t know any other way now. It‟s like really who I am so, I

just love connecting with people as well, you know making people happy,

adjusting to the situation and that's what I am doing on some of these tours

now, just cause I‟ve been away for so long, you just sort of throw in a few old

favourites, just for the hell of it, not like anything rehearsed, it‟s just like wing-

ing it, kinda cool you know, just trying to see where you can take some

things.

What is the story about the “French Girl”?

The scary one? True story, gave my number to this crazy chick, I didn‟t know

she was a crazy chick when I gave my number, you know at this random

bar, amazing night out after a gig, and then just sort of got stalked for six

months after, seriously like freakishly, it kind of freaked me out for a bit, then

I ended up sorta.... The only way out was to write a funny song about her.

And it did end up becoming quite underground famous overseas, which is

kind of a good and bad thing, cause if she has find out or whatever, she

might turn up again one day. Nothing rude or anything, just about being

chased around by her, it‟s called “On the Run”, you know like escaping.

What advice do you have

for aspiring musicians

looking to enter the live

music scene?

The best thing is work hard

on creating your own sound,

I‟ve seen a lot of bands even

since I‟ve come back, when

someone gets big and every-

body else tries to sound like

that one person, like when

John Butler really kicked, and

there was heaps of young

dudes doing the same thing,

but sort of got exhausted, you

sort of exhaust the scene.

You can be inspired by all

that, but when you really

have some twist on it, it‟s

your own sound. It takes time,

but a lot of it‟s just writing

from truth, and just really

finding your voice, on your

own, and being honest with

that, you know when you are or when your just copying someone else, you

know it‟s cool to just be your own voice, and there is a lot of great acts out

there just doing that and it‟s cool.

“Thanks for coming out tonight, it was wicked, I always love coming to this

place, to Port, I did Festival of the Sun a couple of years ago and had a killer

gig on that one, that‟s when I first moved back, and I just think Port people

are just really laid back, cool and friendly and their always up for it, and I‟ll

see you all next time. Oh yeah and check out my albums.”

A message from Mick Hart to Port Macquarie.

“A SPECIAL TRIP TO PORT”

SIMON PHILLIPS

MACQUARIE HOTEL 16/07/10

Melbourne‟s Simon Phillips made a special trip from Melbourne on 15

&16/07/10 to bless us with his presence at The Macquarie Hotel and the

Town Green Inn.

Simon Phillips is an “over qualified” musician with a down to earth attitude and

music that stands along the likes of Matchbox 20 and John Mayer.

Combining virtuoso guitar work, with pop/ soul vocals, and dual foot and guitar

percussion, Simon's body becomes an instrument of rhythm and melodies.

With epileptic like involuntary movements, it was like Simon was powerless

over the music he was creating.

Simon was able to effectively read the crowd, focusing heavily on cover songs

such as “Billie Jean” and “No Woman No Cry”, transforming them into his own

“one man band” mix of reggae, roots and soul rock.

Simon Phillips is a talented professional musician that carries a chart topping

sound and I do hope we can have him back, especially with his full band!

mamboslammers

A word with Simon

Phillips

Does your set list often comprise a mixture of covers and originals?

Well it just depends on the gig, tonight I chose to

do maybe half covers, because the crowd in there,

they was want to dance and Rock „n‟ Roll, some-

times when your playing as a soloist people don‟t

dance. It‟s kind of funny, cause sometimes people

will say play something upbeat, but they don‟t

really mean that, they mean play something we

know. It‟s kind of difficult you know, and I think the

trick is as a musician is to play a set that people

will remember you by, and also play a set that‟s

sustainable, it just means that you van come back

and play at the same venue later on. But know I

just love playing covers, I love to play those old tunes, they‟re not just

standard covers, they‟re old soul tunes, that are timeless.

What are you own songs about?

A lot of the songs are like political stuff, I didn‟t sing some of them tonight,

a lot of the songs are sort of “wordy”, a lot of statements in them I guess

that don‟t get heard in (some) environments. In an environment where

people are listening I definitely play them a lot, maybe more like at a

music festival.

What venues have you played at?

I‟ve played pretty much everywhere, I‟ve played in Central Tunnel in Syd-

ney, and I‟ve played in Sydney Opera House, I‟ve played at The Base-

ment, I‟ve done it all really, I‟ve played in Latin guitar groups, Blues

Groups, Jazz Groups.

What advice do you have for aspiring musicians looking to enter the

live music scene?

There‟s like three stages for the development of any artist:

1. Imitation

2. Assimilation (the act or process by which a sound becomes iden-

tical with or similar to a neighbouring sound in one or more defin-

ing characteristics, Dictionary.com)

3. Innovation

By far the first one is most important, imitating someone else, like if you

can paint like Picasso your doing alright . And then you can start going off

on your own tangent. That's the key, I think musically, listen to your fa-

vourite artists.

Are you John Mayer in disguise?

A lot people mention the John Mayer thing, it‟s actually funny, I sort of

had this sound before I knew John Mayer existed and I think it‟s just

purely because we sort of come from the same educational background

so, it‟s all about listening to the same stuff, again with the imitation thing,

if you surround yourself with music, then it‟s gonna infiltrate what you do.

For example John Mayer listens to a lot of Jazz, a lot of Blues and a lot of

soul music, old school stuff and that‟s exactly what I listen to.

(Taken from Seven Steady’s Bio)

Seven Steady are thieves in the best sense of the word. They bribed a rock bass player, “borrowed” Snob Scrilla‟s touring drummer, stole the acoustic guitar off an indie artist to force him in front of the mic and kidnapped a stray guitarist.

The spoils of their misappropriated influences gives Seven Steady their sound. Described as “Slickly writ-ten pop punk from a heavier angle,” (Steph Hughes, Triple J) with "a definite signature guitar sound...a lot of bands can't find that signature sound," (Ugly Phil, Triple M 104.9 Sydney and Triple M 105.1 Mel-

bourne) the band has been likened to Birds of Tokyo, Bodyjar and The Butterfly Effect.

The four piece Sydney band has spent 2009 writing and recording their self titled EP and already tracks “Don‟t Need You”, “Sell Out Yell Out” and “Jack and Jim” off the EP have received airplay and fetched numerous interviews from Sydney and Melbourne‟s Triple M, Fbi Radio, Radar Radio, 2SER, 2RRR, Northern Beaches Radio to name a few, as well as being used for a show on FOX Sports.

Seven Steady‟s debut show at the Hopetoun Hotel in April 2009 drew a sell out crowd and since then the group has continued to deliver wild shows along the East Coast at festivals and at venues such as the Annandale Hotel, The Metro, The Factory Theatre, along with performances elsewhere in Australia, and as far as New Zealand with festival shows supporting Underoath and Switchfoot. With more East Coast

touring on the horizon, you'll be hearing a lot more from Seven Steady!

Sydney‟s Luke Carra

plays an incredible fusion of Blues/ Roots, Reggae & Folk and delivers it

with a subtle rock format can be described as a psychedelic singer/ song-

writer style. Carra is well toured having played at festivals such as, Peats

Ridge Festival, Adelaide Fringe Festival, Bridgetown Blues, World Youth

Day, Down the Bay Festival, Half Moon Club (London), The Basement

(Sydney) Notte Bianca Festival to name a few. Carra has also shared the

stage and performed with other groups including Ash Grunwald and The

Whitlam‟s. Also under his belt is a European Tour in 2008/ 2009 and three

albums; Borderline (NEW), Be Yourself (described as a gutsy roots album),

GAIA (Title track; GAIA having received national airplay on Triple J). It is a

privilege to have such a musical talent to play for us locally and I suggest

we all get down to either Finnians or to the Harrington Hotel and witness

this internationally recognised talent in

person. Track 2: Be yourself Be Yourself

(Taken from Carra’s own Bio)

Fusion of style is Carra‟s middle name. His combina-

tion of Acoustic, Roots, World and Reggae influences

create a highly evolved and sophisticated show.

Carra‟s enthusiasm to share, perform, teach, and

learn music is evident through his young but mature

persona. Travelling and touring the past 4 years has

proven to have built a strong musical foundation.

“Carra‟s guitar playing is absolutely masterful,

trickling through the centre of each song with flowing, gorgeously arranged picking and chord progressions” (Young, 2009).

Born and raised in Jervis Bay on the south coast of

New South Wales, Luke Caruana nicknamed „Carra‟

picked up a guitar at the age of twelve and has never

looked back, playing in several bands throughout his

adolescent years before realising his potential as a

singer songwriter as he approached his twenties.

After spending most of 2006 in small Mediterranean

country Malta, Carra learnt his roots and shared a lot

of musical experiences including performances at

Farsons Beer Festival, GAIA festival and invitations to

perform in Holland, London and Ireland, which he

accepted. During his stay, one of Carra‟s finest

songs ‘GAIA’, was written and later released as a

single in 2008 and received triple j radio airplay

reaching many listeners around the country.

2007 saw the release of ‘Be Yourself’ Album, de-

scribed as a gusty rock album. Building a name for

flawless shows and a constant lack of sleep, Carra

experienced an intense touring calendar that has

continued through all states of Australia.

Over the years, Carra and various line ups have hit

the stages of festivals and venues including: Peats

Ridge Festival, Adelaide Fringe Festival, Bridgetown

Blues, World Youth Day, Down the Bay Festival, Half

Moon Club (London), The Basement (Sydney) Notte

Bianca Festival to name a few. Carra has also shared

the stage and performed with other groups including

Ash Grunwald, The Whitlam‟s, CW Stoneking and EM-

DEE.

A return to Europe in 2008/09 to promote new album

„Borderline‟ indicates that Carra is building a grass

roots following and community of music lovers

abroad to share and embrace his music. This was

most evident during Carra‟s tour in France. Damien

Schwarz percussionist and Arnoud on sitar and

drums, joined Carra at various Wine bars and Festi-

vals and then over to Malta, where Carra had fans

playing Jembe to Kazoo. This highlights the sponta-

neous element of his performance. From TV perform-

ances on TVM in Malta to touring France, Carra em-

braces different cultures.

His new self funded album “Borderline” is a much

darker release to date. From the opening reminiscent

track “we must let go” to closing epic ten minute

piece “In the end”, the listener is taken on a journey

through Carra‟s emotions, spirituality and music. Ma-

jority of Carra‟s album is acoustic, with additional

strings, didgedoo from Emdee‟s – Mark Hoffman and

Alex Dumbrell Percussion.

The Current line up is Alex Dumbrell on Drums and

Percussion, Ant Beard on Bass, Harmonica, Percus-

sion, Backing Vocals and Daniel Moore on Trumpet.
