Thank You

Earlier this month I sent a letter home advising you of the very sad news involving the death of Chay Phan, father of Aidan (Year 1/2B) I have spoken with Jennifer, Aidan’s mother, who has asked me to thank you for the wonderful support that she has been given from our community. She is extremely grateful for the messages of condolence, the meals, other offers of support or help in dropping off and picking up Aidan. Please also pass a big thank you onto your children who have been wonderful with Aidan in their support. Jennifer does not know all the people who have supported her but would like to say thank you for the support. I would like to echo her sentiments and thank the Classroom Reps, Kathy and Olivia for organising this support. Thank you also to the many of you who have assisted Jennifer in her and her family’s grief. Your response in this time of need has been greatly appreciated and a living example of Christ’s teaching of compassion. Regards Brian Martin Principal

FIRST AID BOX Please read the attachment to this newsletter on the treatment of Head Lice. There have been a few cases in the school recently so we need to keep checking children’s hair and treating them if required to avoid head lice spreading.

The Giving Tree 2014

Sacred Heart will once again have the Giving Tree set up throughout Advent. This is an opportunity

for you and your child/ren to show the joy of Christmas to those in our community who may be in

need.

The children in all classes will be talking about the concept of the Giving Tree and will each be

making an angel gift tag. We ask that any families who are able to donate a gift please use one of

the angels that their children have made.

Remember to write the gender and approximate age on the tag or ‘a boy under 10’, ‘a girl under 12’

or ‘boy or girl under 5’.

This year you may like to donate non-perishable food, that can be used to make up Christmas

hampers as this is something that is greatly needed by many families in our community.

The Giving Tree will be set up just behind the stained glass window and you are welcome to come

with your child to place any contributions around the tree. In the last week of term volunteers

from St Vincent de Paul will come and collect the gifts and distribute them to those in need.

Thanking you in anticipation

Reminder Year 6 Graduation Dinner - $22 per person Please remember to forward your form and payment for each person attending (including students) to the school office as soon as possible. Piano Teacher Dear Parents, My name is Rachel Armitage, some of you may remember me when I worked at Sacred Heart Primary School in Years 1/2 and Foundation from July 2011 to July 2014. Next year, I am looking to go back into teaching music and as such have decided to teach piano from home after school. I will begin teaching once term 1 2015 commences. I will have space, at home, to take between 6-8 students and will be teaching from 4.00pm-6.00pm, 3 days a week. The days are yet to be confirmed, these days will be determined once I know if anyone is interested and if so how many. I have taught music and Piano specifically for the last 15 years in a variety of capacities and am registered with the AMEB and am also a member of the Royal Associated Board of Music (UK). I am experienced in putting pupils through exams or am happy to teach purely for fun! If you would like to know more, are interested in taking up a place for yourself or your child or have any questions for me please do not hesitate to contact me on 0410 923457 or email me at [email protected]. I look forward to hearing from you in the near future, Kind regards, Rachel Armitage

Congratulations

Talia from grade 5/6D recently competed at the Victorian State Open BMX Championships which were held at the Knox BMX Track from the 21st to the 23rd of November 2014. Talia made it into the final eight and raced the final where she finished seventh in Victoria in her age group. The Victorian Titles are open to anyone from Australia and she faced some pretty stiff opposition from a couple of interstate girls who are currently ranked in the top eight in the world. Talia has been training steadily throughout the year but increased her work rate by starting to train five to six times a week, eleven weeks ago and improved her lap times considerably. (There is a rumour floating around that she has nearly caught up to her Dad's lap times).

TREATING AND CONTROLLING HEAD LICE There have been a few cases of head lice reported in the school recently. If we are to avoid them

spreading, it is essential that you check your child’s hair and act immediately should you find any lice

or eggs. Please use the following information to assist you. Thank you for your prompt action in this

matter.

FINDING HEAD LICE

Lice can crawl and hide. The easiest and most effective way to find them is to follow these steps:

Step 1

Comb any type of hair conditioner on to dry, brushed (detangled) hair. This stuns the lice and

makes it difficult for them to grip the hair or crawl around.

Step 2 Now comb sections of the hair with a fine tooth, head lice comb.

Step 3 Wipe the conditioner from the comb onto a paper towel or tissue.

Step 4 Look on the tissue and on the comb for lice and eggs.

Step 5

Repeat the combing for every part of the head at least 4 or 5 times

If lice or eggs are found, the child's hair should be treated.

Head lice eggs are small (the size of a pinhead) and oval. A live egg will 'pop' when squashed between fingernails.

TREATING HEAD LICE

Concentrate on the head - there is no evidence to suggest

that you need to clean the house or classroom.

No treatment kills all of the eggs so treatment must

involve two applications seven days apart.

If you are using lotions, apply the product to dry hair.

There is no need to treat the whole family, unless they also

have head lice.

Only the pillowcase requires specific laundering; either wash it in hot water (at least 60

degrees centigrade) or dry it using a clothes dryer on the hot or warm setting.

There is no product available that prevents head lice. Using the conditioner and comb

method once a week will help you detect any head lice early and minimise the problem.

Tying back long hair can help prevent the spread of head lice.

Combs with long, rounded stainless steel teeth positioned very close together have been shown to be the most effective; however, any head lice comb can be used.
