Jacksons Lane is an amazing place”Eddie Izzard

2015/16

This year Jacksons Lane celebrated its 40th birthday, cemented its position as the UK’s leading circus producer and expanded its participation and outreach work. We launched our first ever national tour – The Hogwallops by Lost In Translation Circus – to 15 cities across the UK. To celebrate our birthday, and supported by the Garfield Weston Foundation, we commissioned two brand new pieces of work that delighted audiences and critics alike – Throwback by Silver Lining and Meta by Gandini Juggling.

From our building we ran 60 weekly classes and workshops for the community. These brought in over 135,000 people, and were enhanced by a theatre programme that attracted an additional 23,444 people into the theatre, while our family programme was watched by 15,811 people. Our thriving arts participation, education and outreach programme continued to expand across Tottenham and Wood Green (allowing thousands to experience and benefit from the arts), and we brought theatre, music, dance and circus to more local schools than ever before.

We commissioned a report investigating our Social Impact in Haringey. They found our work has six key outcomes: increased confidence; increased wellbeing; improved interpersonal skills; gaining creative skills; strengthened social bonds; and raised aspirations. They also found we reach some of the most disadvantaged people in London, and highlighted the excellent quality we offer.

Thank you all for your invaluable support – we couldn’t do it without you.

Jacksons Lane was founded by determined activists within the community in 1975, and this year marked our 40th anniversary of being a creative and cultural hub for North London. For the first few years, Jacksons Lane was managed and run entirely through a committed team of volunteers determined to create somewhere special for people to enjoy.

Key founders of Jacksons Lane include Nicky Gavron (London Assembly Member, and previously Deputy Mayor of London), Melian Mansfield (current Chair of the Board), and Paul and Jan Brooker (who – after 40 years – still lead on the annual provision of lunch, gifts and entertainment on Christmas Day for older and disabled people who would otherwise spend Christmas on their own).

Over the years our work has been felt across all forms: circus was part of the programme right from those earliest days, as well as comedy, drama, music, dance, and Xposure – the UK’s first disability arts festival.

Jacksons Lane has always been supportive of young and emerging artists, and over the years Jacksons Lane has supported thousands of companies at the start of their careers. Now-established names and companies, such as Complicite,

The Mighty Boosh, Out of Joint and Frantic Assembly all developed work at Jacksons Lane. Eddie Izzard began his comedy career supported by Jacksons Lane, and we were also the site where Matt Lucas and David Walliams first performed together.

To celebrate this milestone, there was a large event for all those involved in the early years to come together, reminisce and share stories and memories with each other. We also used this occasion to commission two new pieces of work – one from a young and emerging company (Throwback by Jacksons Lane’s Associate Artists Silver Lining), and one from Gandini Juggling (Meta), a very established company who had also made work at Jacksons Lane over 20 years ago.

Today we are recognised as the UK’s leading producer of contemporary circus, the flagship arts venue in Haringey and we are a National Portfolio client of Arts Council England. We serve over 3,800 people every week and have a turnover of £1.2 million. But we always remember that everything we do stems from the determination, passion, and activism of a committed group of volunteers.

Here’s to the next 40.

In 2015/16 our artistic reach was both local and international, with our partnerships stretching across the globe including collaborations with artists and organisations from Finland, Hungary and Sweden.

The year began with a highly successful run of The Stage Award-winning The Ingenious Gentleman Don Quixote of La Mancha from Little Soldier. Our annual Postcards Festival returned with ten nights of brand new circus and cabaret with up to fifty artists, including Shunt founder Layla Rosa and Gandini Juggling regular Frederike Gerstner.

We supported and co-produced five shows at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, and commissioned two brand new productions for our 40th birthday from our Associate Artists Silver Lining (Throwback) and the universally-acclaimed Gandini Juggling (Meta), gaining worldwide press and TV coverage for the shows and for the organisation.

Jacksons Lane was proud to host a rare opportunity for adult audiences to hear the much-loved Michael Rosen read his poetry in Don’t Mention The Children, and other high profile spoken word events in the year included nights with Jon Ronson, Iain Lee and John Hegley.

In January we co-produced Swedish company Svalbard with All Genius All Idiot for the London International Mime Festival – also enjoying four sold-out weeks with three other international productions in the festival: Al Seed’s award-winning Oog; Alexander Vantournhout’s ANECKXANDER; and The Best Thing by Vamos Theatre. We ended the year with a much-loved run of New Dawn Fades by All Roads Meet, a new play with music about Joy Division and the Manchester scene.

Jacksons Lane is officially the UK’s leading venue and supporter for contemporary circus. This was confirmed in Sideshow Magazine’s State of the Circus report. We work with hundreds of circus artists each year through commissioning, producing, mentoring and year-round residencies, rehearsal space and advocacy. Through our Transmission and Hangwire programmes we support and collaborate with emerging circus artists on developing brand new work which is then showcased in sharings in our theatre, often leading to full-scale productions.

Jacksons Lane across the UKThis year we were awarded £104,000 from Arts Council England’s Strategic Touring Programme to tour Lost in Translation’s family circus show The Hogwallops to 15 cities across the UK, and running alongside programmes of education, participation and audience development. This work should form the basis of continuing to work on a national level, and increasing and diversifying audiences for our work right across the country. Jacksons Lane co-produced a new indoor work from the acclaimed Acrojou with Frantic and supported two emerging companies at the Resolution dance festival at The Place in London.

International ReachJacksons Lane was delighted to present triple-cyr-wheel trio Alula at the Subcase circus showcase in Stockholm to international promoters, presenters and producers. This year we were a major presence at circus gatherings in Sweden, Finland and Hungary, creating lasting international partnerships and allowing artists to increase how much work they present beyond our borders.

Artist SupportJacksons Lane was a lead venue in the bi-annual Canvas Circus Showcase, showcasing 40 companies from around the globe, and presented 15 brand new works-in-development within our Transmission and Hangwire residency programmes. Also this year we were thrilled to support Silver Lining, a young UK circus company, who become Jacksons Lane’s Associate Artists.

Edinburgh FestivalFor the second year, we sponsored the Total Theatre & Jacksons Lane Award for Circus at the Edinburgh Fringe, the award going to two companies – the Palestinian Circus Company with B-Orders and USA’s The Ricochet Project with Smoke and Mirrors.

Jacksons Lane continued its wide-ranging support of young and emerging artists from the circus and visual theatre sectors. We supported some 120 companies over the year which included over 420 artists, through space, dramaturgy and mentoring, with the Jacksons Lane team offering their expertise in areas such as technical support and business planning.

We co-produced five young circus companies on tour around the UK including Circumference and Circus Geeks, whilst our Associate Artists Silver Lining curated three new cabaret nights across the year which gave exposure to young graduate circus artists.

This year Jacksons Lane was selected to host a Weston Jerwood Creative Bursary, enabling us to give a year-long, entry-level position to a recent graduate from a socioeconomic position that means they would be unable to work unpaid – a key barrier to young people seeking to enter the arts from lower-income backgrounds.

Our Hangwire programme saw ten artists being nurtured and supported with residencies and showcase opportunities, and we worked alongside National Centre for Circus Arts to share our knowledge and expertise with their BA students: the artists of

tomorrow. Our skilled team mentored young circus artists with training in fundraising, marketing and production.

In 2015/16 Jacksons Lane expanded its key strategic residency programme, Transmission. Six companies were invited to work in our theatre and across our building, with the emphasis on experimentation and play, with no pressure to produce or finish work. At least one week is given in our theatre space with full technical support, and the opportunity to share their ideas at the end of the week with both a public and invited audience of presenters, promoters and programmers.

Our family programme was bigger and better than ever before in 2015–16.

We presented the London premiere of Lithuanian company Dansema Dance Theatre with their interactive intimate piece for babies Puzzle, and welcomed France’s Compagnie Animotion with their bi-lingual celebration of the Tour de France, Billy and JoJo’s Tour de France.

We took to the streets with theatre and circus artists as part of the Fair in the Square festival in Highgate, performing to several thousand children and families. Over Christmas 2015, our in-house company Tall Stories performed to 5,500 children and families with their acclaimed adaptation of Julia Donaldson’s Snail and the Whale, whilst Jacksons Lane’s acrobatic non-verbal production The Party toured the UK to delighted audiences at theatres and festivals. A wonderful interpretation of Goldilocks and the 3 Bears by Stuff and Nonsense sold out every seat during its week-long half term run in February 2016.

Our production of the family circus show The Hogwallops played to a packed 1,000 capacity tent at Latitude Festival before playing sold out shows in Salford (The Lowry), Bristol (Circomedia), Lancaster (Lancaster Arts at Lancaster University) and Liverpool (The Black-E) as part of our Arts Council-supported national tour.

Jacksons Lane works tirelessly to ensure as many people as possible have access to, take part in, and engage with the arts and their own creativity. We work with artists, practitioners and funding partners to create new pathways to access and participate in the arts. In particular we have developed programmes of work being done both at Jacksons Lane as well as large-scale programmes of outreach work being done on the ground in hard to reach communities and areas of lowest engagement. The major focus for our outreach work continues to be the east of Haringey – particularly Tottenham and Wood Green.

Every week we programme 60 classes and participatory opportunities for all ages, covering dance, circus, music, photography, drama and physical wellbeing.

This year Jacksons Lane worked in partnership with even more schools and venues to ensure that top quality cultural activity was available, for free, to the most hard-to-reach communities.

To understand the impact of our work, between January and March 2016 we interviewed 110 participants. 100% said that participating with Jacksons Lane had had a positive impact on their lives. We asked them how much of positive impact, between 1 (not much impact) and 10 (highest possible impact):

Jacksons Lane strives to engage within a wide geographic spread to ensure the whole of Haringey benefits from our activities and opportunities. We develop and deliver a broad range of quality cultural activities and experiences for all ages that are delivered daily on the ground within communities across the region, with a major focus in Tottenham and Wood Green.

We are delighted to be able to work with a wide range of partner venues that allow us to deliver the best quality arts participation initiatives directly within communities. This year we were able to offer these activities in venues including: Project 2020, Triangle Centre, Sky City Estate, St Ann’s Primary School, Marcus Garvey Library, Haringey Sixth Form Centre, Alfred Findlay House, St Thomas More Secondary School, and Homes for Haringey sheltered housing schemes.

Standout outreach opportunities delivered in the year include:

JL CircusJacksons Lane’s flagship arts participation programme for young people offers free circus and drama workshops that take place after school with young people aged 8–18. Fusing circus, drama, music and other disciplines, this allows young people to develop confidence, gain new skills and build friendships in a supportive environment. Participants work towards achieving a Bronze or

Silver Arts Award. This runs three times per week across three different locations in the east of the Borough.

Women RiseThis is our community project that gives local women the chance to debate and learn about the issue of safety of women in Haringey through exciting events that involve actors, theatre and debate. As well as empowering women in the east of Haringey, we also provide free weekly self-defence classes.

National Youth Circus EventJL Circus participants from Tottenham and Wood Green were invited to attend the National Youth Circus Event to further their circus skills and experience new ways of showcasing their abilities. They attended performances by leading companies and met circus peers from right across the UK.

Expansion of The Social Lunch across HaringeyJacksons Lane expanded the provision of its incredibly popular Social Lunch for older people right across Haringey. Hot and healthy lunches coupled with rewarding arts activities, talks and excursions delivered at Homes for Haringey sheltered housing schemes, allowing us to work with large numbers of vulnerable older people in the east of Haringey.

In 2016 Jacksons Lane commissioned independent consultants and specialist evaluators, BOP Consulting, to assess and measure the positive social impact that Jacksons Lane and its activities has on the people taking part, and on the communities they live in, with a particular focus in Tottenham and Wood Green.

Who is benefiting?BOP report: “The research has found that, first, Jacksons Lane reaches groups that other arts programmes typically do not.” They discovered that the people we work with “come from areas of high social and economic deprivation. In particular they come from areas with poor access to employment opportunities.”

What is their experience of taking part? The consultants found that “the experience of interviewees was uniformly positive.” In their conclusion, they found our activities “are well run and effective. Importantly, our observation was that they were genuinely open, inclusive and engaging (which is not always found in programmes of this sort).”

What difference has Jacksons Lane made? The research showed that six key outcomes are being made from our work: . Increased confidence . Increased wellbeing . Improved interpersonal skills . Gaining creative skills . Strengthened social bonds . Raised aspirations

Long term impact for communitiesBOP highlighted two major long-term benefits that our work is creating: . Jacksons Lane impacts positively on educational

attainment and workforce readiness . Jacksons Lane is creating engagement and a sense of belonging

They go on to conclude that Jacksons Lane “creates economic benefits such as reducing unemployment, especially amongst young people” and that we bring about “social cohesion – building a sense of belonging and affiliation with a community.”

Our year-round programme of arts opportunities for young people working to raise confidence and aspirations, and combat inactivity and isolation. Highlights include:

JL CircusFree after-school circus and drama workshops in the east of Haringey for people aged 8–18. This allows young people to develop their confidence, skills and build friendships while working towards achieving their Arts Award. This year, participants showed off their skills on Blue Peter, and all members of the group received their Blue Peter badges!

World CulturesJL Circus’ third performance on Jacksons Lane’s professional stage. World Cultures featured a cast of over 40 who worked with a team of specialist artists covering circus, dance and drama. This performance was devised with the young people and explored culture and what brings people together.

LAUNCHOur project creating new career paths into the arts for young people from traditionally excluded backgrounds. This year 15 young people aged 16–19 from socially excluded backgrounds performed in the National Theatre Connections project. They toured their performance of Mark Ravenhill’s Citizenship to

Finchley Youth Theatre, Artsdepot and Jacksons Lane. The group received career advice, mentoring and support, as well as visiting the National Theatre to see Wonder.land. We also spent 12 weeks working with Project 20/20 in Northumberland Park Estate, mentoring young people to create their own arts event.

Haringey Youth Arts FestivalJL founded and leads on the development of the Festival, partnering with other local organisations. This year’s event was attended by over 300 people.

JL Summer Programmes This year’s Summer Programmes explored: hula hooping and cheerleading (at The Wellside in Tottenham Green – this project also included two days of activities for young people with learning disabilities from Centre 404); pop up circus events at Triangle Centre in Tottenham; and workshops on devising work from scratch with writers and performers.

The ChallengeWe again worked with The Challenge to create engagement in communities and citizenship for young people. This included a day of volunteering and a ‘Dragon’s Den’ panel where they pitch ideas for community projects.

Jacksons Lane Youth BoardWe are dedicated to giving young people a voice, allowing them to develop as cultural leaders. The Youth Board offers a platform for young people and is a creative and interactive space that allows them to shape the future development of Jacksons Lane and its work.

This entire experience has also helped to encourage the development of a more mature and independent version of myself. Jacksons Lane really seems to have put a lot of effort in to making young people feel that way.”JL Circus Participant

Jacksons Lane has set itself the goal of having its work experienced by every school-age child in Haringey. We have made supporting local schools a priority, delivering new participants and audiences, and partnering with schools in arts education.

JL Guitar Band with Youth MusicJacksons Lane and Musicus teamed up to deliver free weekly guitar workshops at St Thomas More Secondary School. The students began with no experience in music and throughout the year grew in confidence and skill, gave concerts and this has inspired new pathways within the school for music and creative expression.

Join the Circus! schools workshop programmeJacksons Lane continued to develop our offer for schools with a circus-based workshops with key curriculum links. Join the Circus! is an interactive project, adapted for Key Stage 1, Key Stage 2 or Key Stage 3 pupils, exploring the exciting world of circus, and working with professional circus artists and performers. This year we produced this within schools, as well as with groups of disabled young people.

LAUNCH in Schools workshopsLAUNCH in Schools is our one-day workshop for Key Stage 3 pupils, supporting young people into creative and cultural employment. This project is designed to bring out every student’s potential as an arts professional and develop a deeper self-confidence in what they can achieve. We further supported St Thomas More School in Wood Green, as we also worked with a group of 8 young people working to raise their confidence and aspirations. The students all gained an Arts Award.

ArtsmarkJacksons Lane is committed to supporting schools who wish to be Artsmark accredited. Artsmark shows excellence in arts and cultural provision and demonstrates that schools value the arts, while raising the profile of a school in the eyes of students, families and the wider community. We offer opportunities to experience the arts as well as running workshops, INSET days, training for teachers with The Princes’ Trust, as well as backstage tours.

School trips to Jacksons Lane JL offers free and subsidised tickets to its full programme, enabling schools in the East of Haringey to benefit from live performance who would otherwise not be able to attend. We supported more than 30 schools in this way.

I am not sure I would have progressed to further education if I didn’t attend Jacksons Lane.”JL Circus Participant

We continue to work tirelessly to reduce isolation in older people and increase engagement with the arts. Highlights of the year include:

Weekly Wellbeing Activities Throughout the year, there were twice-weekly exercise and movement classes specifically designed to keep older people mobile, flexible and healthy. These benefitted over 1,000 older people.

The Social LunchWe provide a hot and healthy two course meal with opportunities for reminiscence, art classes, workshops, cultural excursions and talks. Each lunch is attended by 40 older people. We work with volunteers from local schools so that people have a chance to talk and mix across generations as well as organising community transport for older people living in sheltered housing.

Broadway BrunchWe developed our Social Lunch offer to partner with Homes for Haringey to deliver our fun social lunches for over 55s right across Haringey in residential care homes. This project enables older people to have fantastic arts experiences with West End singers, artists, actors and circus performers on a monthly basis.

Desert Island DiscsReminiscence project with residents from residential care homes in Haringey. The project leaders work one-on-one with participants from each venue using music, poetry and food to create a Desert Island Disc style presentation of their memories and histories which is shared with peers in their care home and their families.

Christmas DayOn Christmas Day 2015 we once again threw open our doors to provide lunch with all the trimmings and live entertainment to vulnerable older and disabled people who would otherwise spend Christmas alone. The day was managed by a dedicated team of volunteers who acted as cooks, drivers, carers and entertainers. This year marked the 40th anniversary of our Christmas Day event at Jacksons Lane

Jumble TheatreA volunteer-led inter-generational theatre group for the community. This grew from our A Borough United project and participants devise and create work together.

Coffee and Computers Jacksons Lane continued to partner with Highgate Society and Highgate School to provide free IT sessions for over 55s. Working with volunteers we are helping older people locally understand computers, the internet and how they can use these tools to best manage relationships, their finances and use it as a tool for positive change. This year the project expanded to include new areas of Haringey.

It’s something I look forward to. It’s one of the days in which I don’t get to worry about my health, my family, money.”The Social Lunch participant

Jacksons Lane is committed to reducing our environmental impact through becoming a more sustainable, responsible organisation.

We work with Julie’s Bicycle, a charity promoting environmental sustainability within arts organisations, who advise us in various ways we can reduce our carbon footprint. We are currently focusing on water usage, energy usage, waste management and travel.

Here are the headlines we’re working towards: . We have established a baseline for carbon emissions, towards halving our absolute environmental impact by 2018 . We are on track for zero emissions and waste to landfill by 2023 . We will keep attitudes of Reduce, Re-use and Recycle in place across the whole organisation . We will continue making environmental sustainability within the arts imaginative, rather than restrictive . We will be a model of best practice for environmental sustainability in historic buildings

We have an Environmental Planning Team which meets regularly to discuss our progress towards meeting our goals, new ideas and developing our Environmental Action Plan. This plan outlines the integral, day-to-day procedures which enable us to improve our sustainability, as well as long term planning for moving forward.

Some of our achievements to date: . On-going improvements to venue lighting; including moving more than 60% over to LED lights and energy-saving technologies . Reduction of waste across communal office areas and introduction of mixed recycling . On-going reduction in print quantities for marketing materials, and continuing to use the more environmentally friendly waterless print process . Our bar is stocked with produce from local suppliers and producers, often delivered on foot . The introduction of rechargeable batteries across the organisation

During 2015/16, Jacksons Lane maintained its status as a revenue funded client of Arts Council England, and continued long-standing partnerships with Haringey Council, Big Lottery, Youth Music and Children In Need. We were delighted to receive significant support from Garfield Weston Foundation that really allowed the organisation to support more artists and participants than ever before. We also received project funding to develop and deliver new, ambitious activities for all members of the community from more than 15 Trusts & Foundations, including: Tottenham Grammar School Foundation, Hornsey Parochial Charities, Mercer’s Charity, The Baring Foundation, and the Highgate Society.

Independent expert evaluators, BOP Consulting, investigated the economic impact Jacksons Lane has on the local economy. They discovered a ratio of economic impact to turnover of 2.3x. In 2016, given our growth, this would result in:

generated for the local economy every year by Jacksons Lane

additional local jobs supported every year because Jacksons Lane exists

generated for the Haringey economy for every £1 invested in Jacksons Lane by Haringey Council

Thanks to your help, Jacksons Lane continues to thrive and support its communities, artists, audiences and the local economy.
