Editors Letter....

"Happy New Year! "That

greeting will be said and

heard for at least the first

couple of weeks as a new

year gets under way.

Traditions of the season include the

making of New Year’s resolutions.

Maybe you will be making one, like

myself! The battle of the bulge yet

again, to lose those extra pounds

ready for the holiday season ahead of

us. I would like to start the New Year by thanking

Mr Tony Catherall. Tony has produced the

history articles for The Epworth and Belton

Arrow for nine months, with many more to

follow. Tony has put many hours in for me to

produce these articles and all this effort is much

appreciated by myself and hopefully my readers.

Here is to a prosperous new year and I hope

you enjoy the read...

Best Wishes

BACK TO THE PAST FOR EPWORTH OLD RECTORY

Imaginative plans to restore one of North Lincolnshire‟s most highly popular tourist attractions - to

how it looked when first built 300 years ago - have been announced.

They are for the Old Rectory in Epworth, which was built in 1709, and as a museum now attracts

visitors from around the world - as it was the birthplace of John and Charles Wesley, the founders

of the Methodist Church.

Epworth‟s Old Rectory has submitted an application for listed building consent and planning

permission to North Lincolnshire Council to carry out the work, which is intended to open up the

entire house to how it would have looked in 1716. The outcome of the planning application will be

known in mid-January 2010.

“This is a very exciting time for The Old Rectory,” said curator Claire Potter. “If everything we have

planned is approved we‟ll have a visitors‟ attraction second to none,” she added.

The plans call for current visitor facilities will be moved out of the Old Rectory into a brand new

purpose built visitors‟ centre, containing the museum shop, a new café, and other facilities.

Then the Old Rectory will be restored to how it might have been around the year 1716. Part of the

plans are to improve access with ramps to the entrances and a lift to enable everyone to see all

three floors of the elegant Queen Anne house which contains such a rich history.

Many rooms will be returned to how they would have been when the Wesley family lived at the

Rectory with period furniture, furnishings and artefacts, which will tell the stories of their lives.

The recent discovery of early 18th century wallpaper has generated much excitement and it is

planned to recreate the wallpaper in the room where it was found.

There will also be new spaces for changing exhibitions so that visitors will be able to see more of

the items in the museum collection.

The new visitor centre will also open into a proposed new orchard, containing tree species, which

were known in the early 18th century, and the car park will be redesigned and extended.

The Trustees of Epworth‟s Old Rectory have consulted widely prior to the submission of the

planning application and are hopeful of a positive result.

Anyone who would like to become involved with the Old Rectory, or if they would like

more information, please can visit its website at www.epwortholdrectory.org.uk or

telephone 01427 872268.

HAPPY NEW YEAR from All Saints Church, Belton

We are looking forward to the New Year because we have a newly decorated Church.

Have you seen it yet?

Why did we bother about decorating our Church? Well there are three reasons. We did

it for ourselves – it really needed doing. We did it for you – so we have a fine building to

invite you to for baptisms, weddings, funerals or any other purpose. But we did it mainly

for the glory of God.

Back in the Old Testament, Solomon built a temple in which to worship God and it was

the best money could buy. The glory of the Lord settled on the temple when it was con-

secrated.

Worship has been taking place in All Saints Church for centuries and the whole fabric of

the building is saturated with the prayers of faithful followers of Jesus Christ. We invite

you to join us throughout the year (11am every Sunday Morning) as we add to the heri-

tage of our building. Oh yes, it‟s going to be a fantastic New Year!

The Neighbourhood Action Team for

concentrating on are;- Kings Head Croft Car Park - Vehicle Nuisance, Litter,

and Anti-social behaviour.

Stool Close Road, Belton - Anti-social behaviour,

neighbourhood issues.

Belton Pavilion and field, Belton. - Youths causing annoyance, Anti-social

behaviour, criminal damage, Theft. Together with our partnership agencies we work towards dealing with

these priorities. The Neighbourhood team will patrol the identified areas above. Recently Neighbourhood officers in company with HM Customs and Vehicle Operator Services

conducted a police operation to combat vehicle crime. This was conducted in the Area of Sandtoft

village and targeted commercial vehicles in the area. Sgt Michelle Garlick described the operation as

being a huge success with several vehicles being seized in relation to document offences. In total 73

light goods vehicles were stopped with 31 breaching traffic laws resulting in 2 fixed penalty notices,

14 VDRS‟s, three prohibition notices, 2 vehicles seizures and 11 verbal warnings. I do hope that you have all had an enjoyable Christmas and that by the time you receive delivery of

the magazine that you are either looking forward to a New Year or already welcomed the New

Year. However, please bear in mind that extra police patrols will be patrolling the area to combat

any issues and in particular Drink/Driving and drink related issues. Nominate a driver for the

journey and please keep safe. Make sure when you leave your house empty that you have taken

extra steps to make is safe and secure. Also take extra care driving during this season with sudden

changes in weather conditions and dark nights.

Monkeys can be very cheeky like

the one in this picture. Most live

in the rainforest in Africa but

some live in other countries.

Monkeys eat bananas, insects, eggs,

nuts, small reptiles, leaves, flowers

and fruit! Monkeys are very intelli-

gent animals, in fact they are one of

the cleverest animals in the world!

Monkeys’ enemies are big cats such as

jaguars, tigers and more. Also snakes,

apes and other monkeys are their

predators. Monkeys are related to hu-

mans. They have hands and feet like

humans. They have very strong arm

and tails to help them swing from tree

to tree. Monkey bodies are adapted for

their tree climbing lifestyles!

The Isle of Axholme

Where You Live Your Local History Adapted by Anthony Catherall

PRE HISTORIC MAN IN THE ISLE OF AXHOLME There is no evidence to suggest that the Isle of Axholme was settled by Neolithic man (the first farmer) despite a number of archaeological finds at Scunthorpe. The first suggestion of early settlement of the area is provided by the number of Bronze Age man finds. These early inhabitants started ‘invading’ England about 1800 B.C. A particular branch of these people is called the ‘Beaker’ people so named after their pottery. They came in boats across the North Sea pushing into Eastern England up the rivers. In our particular case the Humber and the Trent. They were a great trading people as well as being rather belligerent. These people were the first to use worked metal. They also used flint and stone tools. The standard evidence of the Bronze Age people is around the barrow (burial chamber). None have been found in the Isle of Axholme. Despite this it is probable that some settlement existed in the Isle of Axholme during the Bronze Age because of the amount of archaeological finds of bronze and other implements from this age are:

Find Where found Bronze Spearhead Haxey (Now British Museum) “ “ Crowle “ “ Gunthorpe Bronze Rapier Crowle Moors Palstave (type of axe) Butterwick “ Crowle “ Santoft Gold Torc Low Burnham (now British Museum) Flint Axes Belton (now Scunthorpe Museum) Stone Axes Haxey 6. (now Lincoln Museum) “ “ Wroot 1 (now Lincoln Museum) Axe Hammer Epworth “ “ Haxey The appearance of Bronze, gold, stone and flint in the Isle of Axholme obviously suggests trade as none of these materials are found naturally in the Isle. It is thought that the gold may have come from the Wicklow Mountains in Ireland via Wesse (Dorset Areas).

About 300 B.C. Britain was invaded by various iron using peoples, thus the Iron Age man. There are no finds in the Isle relating to the Iron Age, but obviously Iron tools must have spread to the Isle at sometime. The period up until the Roman invasion is rather confused and rather lacking in evidence. By Roman time the River Trent was the rough dividing line between the vaguely established British tribes of the Coritani and Brigantes. The isolation of the Isle of Axholme and relative backwardness seems about this time to be taking shape.

Now & Then – Then & Now N0 9 By Anthony Catherall

This month and every month; see Epworth in by gone days and

Bromley House, 24 West End Road, Epworth circa 1920 middle and right of pictures. During the 1920’s the home of Mr & Mrs John Fox an Epworth magistrate, with his general store alongside. Later, he let the shop to Percy Bradbury who employed Peggy Fox (no relation); Peggy worked in the shop from

1936-1938. The shop closed then and Percy opened a shop directly opposite. Several families lived in No 26 next door to the Fox’s during the early part of the 20th century including the Hearn’s, Bannister’s, and Morris’s. To the right next to the path set back a little at one time lived the Holmes’s, the Ridghill’s and the Frankland’s. Daughter Betty Frankland now lives in Fieldside Epworth with her family, whilst

Peggy Fillingham (nee Frost) lives in Haxey The building with the two chimney’s was the ‘Ellers Tavern’ a popular watering hole for the people from West End, it is now a private house..

Lawn care in Autumn/Winter Moss

Moss loves a cold and wet environment and therefore winter is its favourite time of

year. This is the time when moss will spore and spread to form a thick spongy blanket

in your lawn which can choke the grass. Now is the time to be

taking action against it but when moss is in your lawn it can

require more than just the application of a moss treatment to

remove it. A moss treatment will stop the condition from

deteriorating but dead moss will stay in your lawn and become a

foundation for further moss in the future. You need to take

action against the causes of moss, one of which is thatch that

has developed in your lawn. Thatch is a blanket of dead grass

and other decaying matter, of which dead moss becomes a part, that prevent essential

air, water and nutrients from reaching the grass plant. You need to get that rake out

again, but a hand or electric rake may not be robust enough to shift it. Of course

nothing clears thatch as effectively as a professional scarifier which uses blades to

remove the thatch and does a significantly more rigorous and thorough job.

Compaction and Sub Surface Thatch

Over time, and quite quickly where there is regular foot traffic, a lawn will become

compacted. A compacted lawn struggles to dissipate water from its surface which

encourages moss to grow, especially in

the autumn/winter. This, along with sub

surface thatch, again forms a barrier to air, water and nutrients affecting the

growth and health of the grass. Hollow

Tine aeration can correct this by

removing

thousands of

cores which

relieves

compaction,

and thins

thatch.

Dear Friends,

The news reports have centred very much on a controversial issue

over the last two weeks, at the end of November and start of December.

The issue of Climate Change.

On the one hand we continue to hear reports detailing what ap-

pears to be the radical changes in global weather patterns-- increased mois-

ture in the air, melting glaciers and disappearing ice caps-- yet on the other

hand of a group of scientists at the University of East Anglia , who it is al-

leged felt that they needed to skew, doctor, hide or amend the figures so

that they demonstrated that there is climate change, when there maybe not.

Science we are told dispassionately examines the facts and interprets them, In its pure

form it is about fact not opinion, reality not rhetoric. The inquiry has yet to hear the circumstances

surrounding this matter, but some scientists feel that their credibility, as a profession, has been

harmed.

The scientists of the ancient world were often the astrologers, the magi, or wise men and

as we will have been reminded after Christmas, they saw the star, they acted on it, even though they

did not know where it would take them. They thought a royal palace, not a stable was where they

were going.

It was not that they expected, and certainly not what Herod expected or wanted to hear. As as-trologers they could not change the fact of change, not climate change but the time change. The

change in which we still base our clocks on these events, with BC having become AD.

In 2010 may we face the facts not pretend or wish they were different.

David Leese.

Epworth County Primary School Newsletter Learning Link with a Scunthorpe School We have started a link with another school, Scunthorpe CE school. Our first event at the

end of November was a great success. 43 children visited with their teachers. They

presented a languages assembly with 10 languages spoken and showed dances and aspects

of different cultures. Countries represented included France, Portugal, Poland, Pakistan

and Brazil. The „Bollywood‟ dance was a notable highlight as was the Goldilocks play in

Polish and English.

Our visitors then visited key stage 2 classes for the children to find out about each other. They all played

together at lunchtime outside and then children from both schools worked in groups in the afternoon on

designing a school and community of the future.

The children enjoyed making new friends and finding out about different cultures and were fascinated by

the different languages spoken.

Over the year we will be working together on several learning projects including visits to Epworth and the

Old Rectory and joint sporting festivals. Epworth Lights Poster Competition Our older children again took part in a competition to design a poster for the Epworth lights. Members of

the public had a chance to decide the winners by voting for their favourites on display at the Imperial Hall.

It was a very difficult job as the standard of entrants was very good. Congratulations to Ellie Heath,

Harriet Brown and Casey Parkin for winning. The three girls will be switching on the Epworth lights.

Our Fund Raising group, the F.O.E.‟s held a Christmas Fair at the same time as the judging and raised

almost £700 for the school.

Children in

Need We again took part in Children

in Need Day on Friday 20

November. We held several

events included a non-uniform

day, collecting pennies for a

tubs and a break cake stall. The

School Council led by washing

staff cars for a fee! The day was all about raising

awareness that there are

children who may not be as

fortunate as us and that we can

make a difference. It was fun

and enjoyable for the children

and raised £370 for a good

cause. Shoebox Appeal The children were also thinking of other children who may not be as fortunate as themselves by taking

part in the Shoebox Appeal. 61 shoeboxes were sent to children who would not otherwise get Christmas

presents this year.

This is a small part of the 1.2 million shoeboxes sent each year by Samaritan‟s Purse to children in Eastern

Europe, Asia and Africa but for the 61 children who will receive the presents on Christmas Day it will

make a great difference.

Best wishes

Important Message for Axholme Cam-

era Club members and visitors. The Au-

dio Visual presentation meeting will

now be on Tuesday January 5th to avoid

Haxey Hood Day. Everyone is welcome to come

to this evening of AVs, which is a celebration of members'

work rather than a competition this year.

David Neve, visiting judge from Brigg, found the entries for

the 'Still Life' competition difficult to judge and awarded 6

prints the top mark of 20. Andy Kershaw, taking over as

Competition Secretary, had two winning monochromes

along with Judy Newton, and the colour section was won

by Jan Neale, Judy Shirley and Harry Snow, proving there is

no age limit to good quality photographic work, as Harry is

an Honorary Life Member in his eighties.

From West Yorkshire, Rodney and Helen Smith gave 'An

Evening with a Difference' as Helen showed how she uses

her photography to produce beautiful embroideries, boxes

and zigzag books to display her pictures in different ways,

while Rodney, as well as bringing some of his collection of

cameras dating from the early 1900s, also brought some

photographs from that period too. It was an interesting

evening.

The January competition, subject 'People' is on the 20th,

while on February 3rd Erica Oram returns to judge the

'Photographer of the Year' competition sponsored by Tom-

Dennis Imaging of Scunthorpe.

Not to be missed is Geoff Trinder's presentation, 'Highlands

and Islands' on Tuesday January 26th. Everyone is welcome

to attend. As always, a small door charge £1.50 to include

refreshments, 7.30pm at Haxey Church Hall.

Anyone interested in joining this friendly club,

can just turn up at a meeting or speak to the

Chairman, Allan Rowsell on 01427 752400.

Farming in the Isle at Harvester Farm, Epworth

Although most people may have looked upon the last month as wet and gloomy we on

the farm have had a very satisfying and productive time.

The tups (rams) have been “busy” and most of the ewes have the crayon marks across

their rumps – they look very colourful with either a blue or red backside striding out

across the field! We have booked the Sheep Scanner for early February who will be able

to tell which ewes are expecting singles, twins, triplets and even quads ! This important

information will help us to ensure that the ewes are given the correct amount of nutrition

so that we do not over feed singles (too big a lamb therefore a difficult birth) and likewise

the multiple births are given more to ensure a better survival rate.

We have had numerous visits to Selby market this month to sell the ram lambs – this en-

tailed some very early starts in the rain in order to gather them into the trailer to get to

the market by 7.30am. All our visits proved very successful and also the early wake-ups

had a silver lining …….the café at the market does the best egg and bacon roll and coffee

in the county!! We have more or less have now finished with the lamb meat selling, our

last 6 went this week, our next visit to the butcher will be in January when we take the

first of our Dexter steer.

The cattle have settled into the winter routine and must be enjoying the comfort of a dry

bed and plenty of sweet smelling silage. All the summer calves with mothers, are in will

Larry (their Dad) and had to learn who is boss or get a biff from his large head on their

hind quarters. Peace prevails now and everyone knows his or her place! This is not so

down at the other yard where Agnes‟s little calf is giving his mum a good run around - it is

surprising now quick his little legs will take him! And he now has 2 potential playmates

because Ruby gave birth to TWINS., This was a very pleasing surprise , we knew she due

at the end of the month but never thought she was carrying twins. She gave birth to 2

black bull calves who are doing very well but due to the poor light I have been unable to

photograph them but promise a picture for next month.

We hope you all had a merry Christmas and wish you a

happy New Year.

Best Wishes Jill

Isle Group of the Lincolnshire

Wildlife Trust

Pueblos, petroglyphs and other

things.

The January meeting of the Isle of Axholme group of the Lincolnshire Wildlife

Trust will take place on Thursday January 7th when we will be having an

illustrated talk on Pueblos, petroglyphs and other things by Allan Rowsell.

Allan spent several weeks travelling around various states in the south west of

America and has taken some wonderful photographs of the area showing its past

and present. Allan is chairman of the local camera club and is a very good

photographer so these images, along with many stories of the people and places

he encountered on the way mean that we are in for a great evening.

Members Photographic Evening

The February meeting of the Isle of Axholme group of the Lincolnshire Wildlife

Trust will take place on Thursday February 5th when we will be having our

annual members slide, digital or print photographic evening. This has always

proved to be a very popular evening in the past because we have a wide variety of

subjects, not just natural history. Members bring along photographs of anything

they think may be of interest to the group. The photographs can be in any form as

we have both slide and digital projectors. It is helpful if we know in advance who

is bringing some photographs so that we can arrange them in order and set up the

appropriate equipment, just give Geoff a ring. Do come along and join us, if it‟s

like past years you will have a great evening. Our meetings are open to anyone;

you don‟t have to be a Trust member.

We meet on the first Thursday of the month from October to May at the new

hall at the rear of Haxey Methodist Chapel on Low Street starting at 7.30pm.

There is a small admission charge of £1 and there is a raffle and refreshments.

Bird food is always on sale at the meetings as well as at Geoff‟s house in Belton.

For further information about the local Trust group and their meetings please

contact Geoff or Chris Trinder on 01427 872051. We look forward to welcoming

all regular members and new visitors.

Book Review Title: Cool!

Author: Micheal Morpurgo

The main characters in Cool! are Robbie a boy who goes into a

coma, and Lucky an injured dog… In the first part of the book Lucky runs out on to the road and

Robbie runs after him. Then a car comes and hits Robbie, Robbie

is brought to hospital in a coma. After that, (the main part) Robbie describes how he feels.

At one point he overhears a nurse say to his mum and dad, ”if he

doesn‟t wake up soon we‟ll have to let him go ,sorry”. This

makes Robbie frustrated and upset.

Finally, to wake Robbie up they

bring Zola, a famous footballer

to speak to Robbie.

Unfortunately this doesn't wake

Robbie up. So they bring Lucky

in, Robbie is so happy Lucky‟s

alive he wakes up! This book has detailed black and

white illustrations which go with

the story perfectly. There is

nothing bad about this book;

I really like the way its

unpredictable. You can‟t easily

guess the ending. I give it five

stars.

Don’t be dim this winter

A Happy New Year to all our readers.

Being able to see the road ahead to avoid danger and stop safely in an emergency is a necessity for

all drivers, especially when driving in the hours of darkness.

(Doncaster Advanced Motorists) offers the following tips on how to check and use vehicle lights in

preparation for the short and dark days.

Check the lights

Regularly check that all lights work. While someone observes the lights around the car, switch on

each light one-by-one: headlights, sidelights, fog lights, indicators, brake lights, reverse lights, hazard

warning lights and number plate lights

If alone, park by a reflective surface such as a garage door, illuminate all lights in sequence and look

for the reflections

Use the lights

When away from street lighting, visibility is limited to the range of the headlights. This varies greatly

between dipped and full-beam; slow down when driving on dipped headlights. Lights give motorists

an early warning of each other‟s presence. Look for approaching lights when driving around corners,

adjust the position of the vehicle accordingly and dip your own headlights to avoid dazzling other

motorists

If oncoming drivers forget to dip their lights, slow down and give your eyes time to adjust to avoid

blindness. Never stay on full-beam to retaliate It is difficult to judge approaching speed in the dark so

take extra care when making a manoeuvre and always allow traffic to pass when waiting to pull out

at a junction

The weather will also dictate when to use headlights and fog lights. Use fog lights sparingly; switch

them on only when visibility is below 100 metres. Leaving them on after fog has disappeared is an

offence and a danger to other motorists A

general good rule of thumb is to switch on dipped

headlights during heavy rain and poor light

Never use lights to dazzle or cause discomfort to

other road users – this is against the law
