From the Vicarage... . . . .In the rhythm of a year the New Year isfor many a poignant time. We reflect onthe year that was and look ahead to theyear that wil l be. Some wil l be glad to beshot of 201 0. Others wil l look back overhappy times. And as we look forward, the uncertainties over our country’seconomy and the associated spendingcuts, have the potential to perhaps makeall of us, at least a l ittle, apprehensive.

As a church community we can lookback over the year with thankfulness. Iam certainly thankful to be here as vicar. We saw the year end with thecompletion of a project to make a smallroom at the back of the church which wil lgive us more flexibi l ity in the use of thespace of the church. This wil l be calledthe Holmes room in recognition of thegenerous legacy of Christine Holmeswhich has made the work possible. I t wil lgive us more flexibi l ity in our use of thespace in the church. We are also hopingto instal l a new sound and projectorsystem early in the New Year to enablethe church to continue to share itsunchanging message in a changingworld. As we invest in the churchfacil ities we hope also that it wil lincreasingly be a place that can be usedby the wider community. The church isopen during term time so do pop in andhave a look.

In January our church council wil l beginworking on developing its vision for thecoming years. Having a clear vision isvital for any organisation and the churchis no exception. This is an excitingopportunity as we explore what it means

to be ‘church’ today, in our vi l lage. I f youhave any ideas of ways in which thechurch can better serve the vil lage, I orany member of the PCC would reallyappreciate hearing from you.

2011 is a special year as it is the 400thanniversary of the King James Bible.Even committed atheist Richard Dawkinsis supportive of the 400th anniversary, asa year for everyone to celebrate the vitalrole the King James Version has playedin the development of the history, language and literature of the English-speaking world. But of course forChristians it is much more significantthan that. For four hundred years theBible has been available in our ownnative language meaning that ordinarypeople have been able to read andinterpret it for themselves. And of coursewe believe it is a book which continues tohave relevance for us today, guiding us,inspiring us and as a means by whichGod can and does speak to us. Perhapsa New Year resolution could be to openthe Bible again and ask God to speak toyou through it. I f you do not know whereto begin, this l ink gives all sorts of help:

http: //www.zondervan.com/Cultures/en-S/Product/Bible/Plans.htm?QueryStringSite=Zondervan

Alternatively, give me a call and I wil lhappily drop by with a guide to readingthe Bible. Why not give it a go and seewhat happens!

Wishing you God’s richest blessings thisNew Year

Jane

Living With DeafnessI have lived with this problem for someten years and now need two hearing aidsto keep me in touch with normal l iving.Quite by accident – from a fl ier in thewaiting room of the Batheaston MedicalCentre - I came across the detai ls ofthese help sessions being arranged byNHS Hearing Therapy Services anddeafPLUS at Green Park Station.

During my use of hearing aids, I havenever come across so much usefulinformation and advice as I gained fromattending one of these groups. Thisincluded help in cleaning and maintaininghearing aids, detai ls of a monthly helpcl inic at St. Martin’s Hospital and achance to see and try out a large rangeof equipment to assist in using thetelephone, radio and TV, hearing doorbells & fire alarms etc.

I can only echo the statement in theadvertisement, ‘I learned many things Idid not know’ and I commend theseevents to anyone similarly affl icted.

Letter from Artannes(From our twin vil lage near Tours in theLoire area of France.)

In the autumn of 201 0 we celebrated the1 0th anniversary of our TwinningAssociation. A meal was organised inthe Salle des Fêtes for about 1 00 of usby Jacques L’Hôte, our president. Aswell as current members andcouncil lors, there were some of theoriginal organisers who set up the l inks– with Rocastrada (I taly), formalised in2003, then with Bathford in 2006.

We reminisced about events during the1 0 years, ranging from olive picking inI taly to cooking Christmas puddings inBathford. I t is pleasing to report that therose bushes given by Bathford, plantedin front of our Mairie, sti l l survive!

In December each year Artannes takespart in the Téléthon – rather l ike yourChildren in Need appeal. The recentone raised money for AIDS researchand there was a guided walk aroundArtannes with a warming glass at theend.

Also in December, a Christmas Marketwas held in the Place de l’Egl ise andEnglish products, including quite a lot ofBath beers, were sold.

The really good news is that the club hasmanaged to sign up for a ‘match funding’deal with a major bank and, consequently, the total made on theevening ended at a magnificent £1 200.
