In 2000, I read through the Bible for the first time in many years. I was blown away by all that I had forgotten. I was so af-fected by the experience that I read

through the Bible again in 2001. Since that time I've encouraged others to do so as well. The latest iteration of that encouragement is

BibleReadThrough.org. BibleReadThrough.org is a service de-signed to help you read through the Bible in one or two years. It provides a variety of reading plans, and the service notifies you via email of the daily

reading. Please consider using BibleReadThrough.org, a read-through Bible, or another plan to read through the Bible in 2010.

The Lord’s TableThe Lord’s TableThe Lord’s Table The Lord’s Table will next be observed on January 10th. You are encouraged to take some time out the week before we observe the Lord’s Table to prepare your heart and mind to enjoy this means of grace.

Reminder: ‘Gluten Free’ bread is available for communion. Please sit on the right side of the sanctuary to receive the gluten free plate.

The Lord’s Supper is a special presence of God’s Spirit with His people, who meet in unity around the table. The unity of God’s people is displayed as we partake of the supper together on the Lord’s Day. We remind you of this biblical truth so that you do not miss out on this means of grace.

If you are in the lobby during the supper, we invite you to come back into the sanctuary so that you can partake of the supper. We will have extra seats along the back wall to accommodate you and your children.

As a Christian educator, I spend a lot of time thinking about how teaching and Christianity go together. In previous articles I’ve mentioned an excellent little book by Al Wolters, Creation Regained, which sums up the basics of how a Reformed world-view affects one’s under-standing of Creation and our purpose in it. If you aren’t sure how the Creation, the Fall, and the Gospel fit into everything we humans do on this planet, get a copy of Wolters’s book and chew through those 100 pages.

Likewise, if you’ve spent any time around a New Covenant School faculty member, you have probably heard us use the term “grace-based education” as an attempt to de-scribe what we’re doing at NCS. Ap-plying theology to the task of educa-tion leads us to recognize principles of redemptive grace in daily class-room living. It’s a work in progress. Check out the book Teaching Re-demptively by Donovan Graham if you’re curious. We also have a blog where we post occasional thoughts about the task of educating in Grace: http://gacefuled.blogspot. com.

A key aspect of a Reformed view of education is this: Edu-cation must be more than merely dumping information

from one brain into an-other. Though simply stated, this idea revolu-tionizes the typical class-room. I’d like to argue that the nature of educa-tion itself demands a rela-tionship to be effective. To get to that point, I need to first discuss the nature of education. The Nature of Education From the Latin “e + ducere” – “to lead out” – we get our primary label

for the work of leading young peo-ple from a state of ignorance and immaturity toward a greater under-standing of the world around them. Education demands both a learner and a teacher. Self-guided explora-tion may be very “educational” in one sense, but even a massive dose of it does not equal a balanced edu-cation in anyone’s book. Education, like all other human activities, takes place within a community and af-

fects more than just a student’s brain.

If education were nothing more than transferring information from one brain to another, I could solve America’s education woes using Wikipedia articles and free nation-wide wi-fi. If raw knowledge were enough to prepare a human being for life in God’s world, why all this emphasis in Scripture on attaining wisdom? Education that stops at “knowledge-transfer” merely pre-pares intelligent sinners for a life of rebellion. Like every other human activity, education carries heavy moral and religious overtones.

In fact, I’d like to argue in this series of articles that education (seen holistically as “preparation for

living,” not merely gathering infor-mation that any 17-year-old can find using her iPhone and an Internet connection) is a subset of disciple-ship. If every activity of a human being is, in a sense, religious – either directed toward helping God’s King-dom or rebelling against it – then education too is all about worship and worldview.

Dr. Bill Davis (philosophy faculty, Covenant College) states that teach-ers must effect a change in the worldview beliefs of their students before they can say that real educa-tion has taken place. To do any-thing less is to leave a student un-touched by the deeper relevance of the most basic questions of our exis-tence. Why am I here? What can I know? How do I know?

Why all this religious talk? I’m not here to bash public schools, make parents feel guilty about their educational choices, or advertise my school (though I encourage you to ask my upper school students why they choose to attend NCS).

Instead, I want to lay a founda-tion for a further discussion next month about the very purpose of education. If education is “leading out,” then it matters where we’re leading. And the route we take to get there.

It an-nounced that Covenant has the 2nd highest graduation rate and 8th highest freshman retention rate among baccalaureate colleges in the South. This marks Covenant’s second consecutive year being ranked #4 among bacca-laureate colleges in the South, having risen steadily within the top ten over the past seven years.

This production, written by Paul Field, connects the life of William Wilberforce and other abolitionists who ended slavery in the 1700s to modern day slavery. As you all may already know, human trafficking is a pandemic in our world today. Some people think of it just being overseas, but it has also become common in our own backyards of South Carolina. The slavery that occurs is often forced labor with no pay or sex slav-ery where women, men and chil-dren are forced to sleep with clients who pay money to the pimps. Not only are these people not paid for their work, but they are trapped in these roles with no way to escape. Often their “owners” have them physically and psychologically trapped. We as believers in Jesus Christ must look at these acts in disgust, but we also must act. Jesus says in Luke 4:18-19, “The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he has

anointed me to proclaim good news to the poor. He has sent me to pro-claim liberty to the captives and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty those who are op-pressed, to proclaim the year of the Lord's favor.” Charles Spurgeon, a Baptist minister in England in the 1800s said “a church which does not exist to do good in the slums and dens and kennels of the city is a church that has no reason to justify its longer existing. A church ... that does not exist to take the side of the poor, to denounce injustice and to hold up righteousness, is a church that has no right to be. Not for yourself, O Church, do you exist, any more than Christ existed for Himself.” The mission of CARGO is to inform people in our area about what hu-man trafficking is and how they can get involved in ending it. We envi-sion having many people come and support this production to hear what is going on in our world and even in our state.

One of the most amazing truths in all of Scripture is something totally unique to

Christianity, something that no other religion has ever taught or even tried to ar-

ticulate. It is so powerful that if you really believe it, it will give you hope in diffi-

culty, thankfulness in prosperity, and grace in suffering. The Bible teaches that

God makes all things work out for the good of his people and for his own glory. It

teaches that Jesus is reigning right now and that this suffering Savior is the ruling

Lord of the universe. While evil appears to be winning and human suffering seems

to leach all the joy and hope out of life, the picture we see in Scripture is of a God

who is both powerful enough and loving enough to limit evil, a God who put

boundaries around suffering, and a God who takes all the bad things in the world

and actually uses them in the lives of his people to accomplish his purpose of mak-

ing all things in this world brand new. This wonderful truth is known as the Sov-

ereignty of God. So this week, join us at the beach as we look at the many facets of

God’s loving, powerful control over all things. If you can get your head around

this, it will essentially give you a whole new way to see the world—in short—a new

life! Now, that would be a week well spent!

How People Change (A211) Instructors: Mark Burchette & Joe Noblitt “This course is a study of what God has done in Christ to transform us from idolatry-enslaved sinners to people who are like him, zealous to do what he says is good in a world that is terribly broken. This course celebrates the truth that Jesus came to save us because we are unable to save ourselves. His work addresses the deepest and most personal issues of human experience… And it calls them to a personal commitment to a lifelong process of transformation into the image of Christ. (Tim Lane)” This class will not be lecture driven but conversation centered. You will be expected to do work outside of class. This will allow you to apply each lesson specifically to your life. A large class will not work with this material so we will limit the class size to 20 people. You can sign up for this class in the church lobby in January.
