“Win One for the Gipper”
As we begin a new Calendar year it is easy to forget that January is only the half-way
point of the Lions Fiscal year. Looking over the past six months I have cause for concern for the
health of our District membership. There are of course at least four levels we can look at when
we count membership: Club, District, Multiple District and International groupings. Starting at the
root, how is your Lions club in net membership after the November 30th reporting period? I have
seen only a few of our Lions clubs that have membership growth. Most clubs are remaining even
and some have net losses. As of this past week our District has a -21 net loss in membership
with a total of 1841 members. Statewide, MD13 has lost 145 members, down to 12,022 members
for the same period. The International membership is another story, it has grown over 21,000
members world-wide in the last six months.
When I attended the 99th International Convention in Fukuoka, Japan last June Interna-
tional President Lion Bob Corlew stated that his membership goal for the Lions during his term of
office, and the Centennial Year was to surpass the highest membership number ever achieved in
the Century of Lionism. He quoted the figure of 1,425,310 members as the highest membership
our Organization has ever experienced. He expressed this request to us, his District Governors,
that we set a new record in Lions membership, worldwide, by at least one more member. I along
with the other 740 District Governors, present in Japan, promised our support. Getting back to
our District, will our Inaugural Year start out with a strong foundation of members or will we end
the year with a net loss? I am encouraged by the recent recruiting of new members from some of
our Lions clubs but as we all realize the losses also continue, mostly as our members pass away.
While recruiting new members isn’t exactly the same as winning a football game the moti-
vation is the same, Like Coach Knute Rockne who inspired the Notre Dame football team in the
1920’s by remembering one of their fallen star players, George Gipp, we too can be motivated by
remembering Melvin Jones and his desire to build our Organization to serve others. I would like
to think that our International President Lion Bob Corlew is our Coach in making the Lions a win-
ning team as “Knights of the Blind”.
Happy New Year and “Win One for the Gipper”!

I hope all our district Lions and their families have had a pleasant and safe Christmas and New Year’s holiday. With a little luck and some resolute of effort I may be able to shed the pounds gained this holiday season. December impart for me was catching up on my LCI paper work. The sessions took a bit longer than I was expecting. Note for those that follow as future DGs do not to wait till a week before deadlines to start. Not to worry about December being all work, I did make time to attend a few parties and had a great time with family and friends. So, Carol and I over all had a very good hol-iday this year.
I hope all the club projects and fund raising for the remaining year come together as planned and with great success. Please let me know the dates and I will try to make all of them that I can. If time, money and Lion power is available please take note of two district projects coming up.
Kamp Dovetail is a week-long camp for kids with disabilities. Kamp Dovetail needs volunteers, money, and donations. There is a list that has been going around our district of needed items and it is in this newsletter. Please inquire on the dates volunteers are needed. Check your bank account for a few extra bucks that can be given and fill the listed items needed.
The other project is Tour De Cure, a bike tour for American Diabetes Association. The Tour De Cure also needs volunteers and money, Lions are needed to work the rest stops and $2500.00 is needed for our district’s event sponsorship. Our Lion’s logo looks good on the back of the tee shirts, not to mention the money raised is going to a very good cause. The tour will be held in July. Our Lion’s year starts July 1st but funds will need to be turned in by the Tour date. So, we will need to start to col-lect money in our last quarter of this year. A note on this, some clubs have given to the Tour this year. Due to oversight in our transition from two districts into one, the money collected so far this year was used for the 2016 Tour. Money coming in now until this coming Tour de Cure will be used for the 2017 Tour sponsorship. I do apologize for this mishap but we should from now on be in our correct time frame of donating to this worthwhile project.
Make checks payable to Lions District 13 OH6, note Tour de Cure in memo field and mail to: CST Jay Carey

Let’s have a great year growing in membership and in service but make sure you having fun doing it.
Yours in Lionism

Happy New Year’s 13 OH6!!
January is a month for new beginnings. For Lions, it’s the halfway mark on the calendar. What do you want to improve in your clubs??
Have you taken a good look at your club roster lately? Are there members that are un-healthy and in nursing homes or at home and would truly enjoy a visit; maybe they have needs that could be met by the club? Are there members that you haven’t seen for a while? Maybe a phone call would encourage them to return to the club, especially if you asked them to help you with something. They would feel needed!
Have you taken a good look at your budget lately? Have you started sending out all those checks to all the wonderful organizations needing them? e.g. LCIF, OLERF, Pilot Dogs, OSSB band. Maybe you made more money this year than you anticipated? That being said, you can always find many worthy causes, both local and abroad.
Have you taken a good look at your community needs? Your local food pantry, homeless shelters, women’s shelters, nursing homes, and soup kitchens? Perhaps there are needs of time, money, companionship, or supplies.
Have you taken a good look at all the ways you can improve your health and still be “serving others”? The “Walk 4 Hunger”, cleaning up a river bank, a “packing project” are all forms of getting exercise and/or fresh air. Or you could sponsor a “diabetic screening” so that all your members and the community could be tested and screened.
Just remember “here’s looking at you” because the community’s eyes are on us and we need to show them how it’s done!! Lol Never tire of blessing others!!!
Start off strong!!

A Different View of Membership!
Gonna, Should’a, Would’a yesterday ~ but it didn’t happen!
Don’t spent so much time making excuses or apologizing for tasks undone or not finished this past year, because you cannot re-live yesterday. It’s gone! It’s water over the dam! There’s no repeats like in “Groundhog Day”.
Look where Lions are today, with declining and aging membership and ask what are my tal-ents and how can I make a positive difference? Pick our area of competence such as: Leader-ship, community service, fundraising, recruiting, communicating, or whatever you can contrib-ute; then develop a plan of action and go to work today. Growth comes from the Club Level.
Most people are aware of global problems, because they’re revealed by the News Media on a regular basis. The wars, diseases, crime, disasters, border security, and the fears of what might happen are digitalized on us daily. However, neither good accomplishments or needs of our neighbors meet the standards of being newsworthy. Lions are givers, and give more than another other organization in the world. However, some individual problems and needs closer to home go unnoticed and unattended. There are several government programs for youth, el-derly, homeless, hunger, jobless, and the sick, but this safety net has holes and does not deal with loneliness, or the feeling of each person having value. Churches are great and can deal with feelings of value, but with a small percentage of community members attending or partici-pating, their effect is minimized.
The government programs also affect the health of today’s communities by relieving good citizens of the responsibility of caring for the less fortunate. Thus preventing good citizens from focusing on the holes in the security blanket. Local Lions must attend to needs that are unat-tended. “Where there is a need, there is a Lion”.
Psychological Health! Research shows that parents’ presence or just being around has a positive effect on youth. My grandsons ask and wants to know where their father is. Their friends have a dad and they don’t. This important connection is also needed by adults. It was demonstrated by the mini-series called “Roots”. Just the sheer numbers of citizens tuning into the series and shop talk that followed each episode. People need more than communica-tions... they need to feel connected.
We all want Lionism to Grow and have several programs designed to increase our numbers. Effectiveness depends on serious commitment to being connected, building positive relation-ships, equipping other, positive attitudes, and Leadership. With our focus on people the exist-ing security blanket holes will decline and our membership will grow. Programs alone are not enough.

13 OH6 District Convention
Hi Fellow Lions,
Have you ever wondered how much fun a district convention is? Have you ever won-dered what goes on at the district convention? Have you ever wondered what you can get at a district convention? Have you ever been to a district convention?
If you have answered no to ANY of these questions, then your chance to answer these questions will be coming up in April 2017.
If you have ever attended a district convention, you know we have a fun filled time with Tail Twisting and the Convention Raffle. We all love to win prizes and this is done by each Club's generosity! ZC Beth Cauley (along with some help) has been asked to do the Tail Twisting and get raffle prizes. We are asking each club in OH 6 to give at least $30 (or more if you would like) that will be used to buy raffle prizes. You can send the check to CST Jay Carey, 635 Albin Ave., Washington C.H., OH 43160 and mark Raffle on the "memo line".
For the raffle prizes, we are asking each zone to create a “basket” of items to raffle off. These baskets can have a theme (ex: sports, drinks, “Lions” items, etc.) or whatever you would like to put in a basket.
If you have questions you can call ZC Beth Cauley (937) 238-9119 or Convention Chair Miriam Van Scyoc (513) 474-0288.
Come and join in the fun. Register and be there at District Convention so you have the opportunity to win!!!
Yours in Lionism,
ZC Beth Cauley

Focus on the Homeless
Service Project Ideas
Find out what local agencies or groups are do-ing to help the homeless and ask how your club can help
Donate a coat that converts into a sleeping bag or donate to the nonprofit, The Empowerment Plan, that makes them and employs homeless.
Start a club project to turn plastic bags into sleeping mats by crocheting or knitting
Continue donations to local food pantries, which are usually desperate at this time of year
Collect toiletries, hats, gloves, and socks and create “blessing bags” to give to homeless
Invite a speaker to your club that can describe the local problem and solutions
Work at a local food pantry or shelter. Donate time for job counseling or donate gas cards.
Record service hours and donations on the MAR to count for Relieving the Hunger, a Cen-tennial Challenge
Inspiration
564,708 people in the U.S. are homeless. Of that number, 206,286 were people in families, 358,422 were individuals, and a quarter of the entire group were children.
83,170 individuals, or 15% of the homeless popu-lation, are considered “chronically homeless.”
47,725, or about 8% of the homeless population, are veterans.
1.4 million veterans are at risk of homelessness.

Everyone can help with this project: collecting, cutting
bags, turning strips in yarn, winding, crocheting, and dis-

with other groups, such as scouts. Ask your local grocery
store for donations of plastic bags. Call Lion Eleanor at

Welcome to all new Lions!
We are proud to have you join the world’s largest humanitarian organization.
Ask your sponsor how you can get involved in a service project.
Chillicothe Evening Lions Club: We assisted
five families (15 children) with food, cloth-
ing, toys, and necessities at an estimated
$10,000 for the Christmas family project.
Chillicothe Evening Lions Club: PDG Norman Cupps
presided over the induction of our newest Lion,
Emilie Kemper. Lion Emilie's sponsor was Lion Mom
(Debbie Kemper).
Beavercreek Lions Club collected and
sent 55 pounds of toiletries to victims of
the recent Gatlinburg wildfire.
Carlisle Lions Club: Every Christmas season the Carlisle club prepares boxes of food for the needy. The school has a canned food drive, the school nurse prepares the list of families in need, and the football team deliv-ers these cans of food to the Carlisle Club-house. The club members then sort out the cans. This year 55 boxes of food, both non-perishable and perishable were given out. It's quite a production!!!
