New Year’s Resolutions
Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,
New Year’s Resolutions. What are your New Year’s resolutions? To lose weight? To get in shape? To quit smoking? To fix up the house? To make better grades? Did you know that making New Year’s resolutions was originally a pagan practice in ancient Rome? The Romans used to make promises to the god Janus, for whom the month is named. However, this is an excellent thing that people do this time of year — not just we Christians but even non-religious people. Catholics complain this time of year because of all the “church” they have to go to, but what better thing to do than to ask God’s blessing on our New Year’s resolutions? And also, we ask for the intercession of Mary, the Mother of God, to help us follow through on our resolutions.
Of course, many of us here will not be faithful to our resolutions. We start out so excited, and by the time February gets here, we are already “pigging out”, smoking, being lazy, slacking off on our grades, etcetera. So, what goes wrong? Why can we not seem to muster the commitment to do what we know we should do? Maybe we should examine our personal improvements — not based on how they benefits us — but on how they benefit others. For example, I may not be that con-cerned about my weight (I could be “fat and happy”), but if I die an early death, I will not be around to be a grandparent to my grandchildren. I may not care how well I do in school, but if I don’t know an-ything as an adult, I will not be as good of a husband/father or wife/mother that I could be.
What defines us is not what we are doing for ourselves, but what we are doing for our rela-tionships — the people who mean the most to us. During Christmas, I have been preaching a lot about the family because we are focused on the Holy Family and we are spending a lot of time with our family members (maybe too much time!). Healthy family life demands sacrifice, thinking about the needs of others, and avoiding selfishness. In this feast today, we meditate on the Mother of God, the perfect mother. What marked Mary’s life is that she treasured all these things and reflected on them in her heart (Lk 2:19). This is a good litmus test of our New Year’s resolutions: How is this resolution going to help me to treasure the life of Jesus and my loved ones? How can I reflect more on Jesus’ family?
The most practical way of following through on our resolutions, of praying for our loved ones, and reflection on holy things is the commitment to the holy rosary. This ensures that our 2019 will be focused on Jesus, not on ourselves, and that reflection on the Holy Family will help our families to treasure holy things and reflect on them in our hearts.

Resoluciones de Año Nuevo Queridos hermanos y hermanas en Cristo, Resoluciones para el Año Nuevo. ¿Cuáles son sus resoluciones para el Año Nuevo? ¿Perder peso? ¿Ponerse en formar? ¿Dejar de fumar? ¿Arreglar la casa? ¿Obtener mejores calificaciones? ¿Sabían ustedes que hacer resoluciones para el Año Nuevo fue originalmente una práctica pagana en la antigua Roma? Los romanos acostumbraban hacer promesas al dios Janus, de quien el mes toma su nombre. Pero eso es algo excelente que la gente hace en esta época del año — no solo nosotros los Cristianos sino aún personas no religiosas. Los católicos se quejan en esta época porque tienen que ir tanto a la “iglesia”, pero ¿qué puede ser mejor que pedirle a Dios que bendiga nuestras resoluciones de Año Nuevo? Y además, pedimos la intercesión de María, la Madre de Dios, para que nos ayude a cumplir nuestras resoluciones. Por supuesto muchos de los que nos encontramos aquí ahora no seremos fieles a nuestras resoluciones. Comenzamos con mucho entusiasmo, y cuando llega febrero, ya estamos “hartando como cerdos”, fumando, pereceando, dejando bajar nuestros grados, etcétera. ¿Y qué pasa? ¿Por qué nos parece que no podemos cumplir la promesa y hacer lo que sabemos que debemos hacer? Quizás deberíamos examinar cómo hemos mejorado personalmente – no basados en có-mo esas mejoras nos benefician a nosotros — sino en cómo benefician a otros. Por ejemplo, no debería preocuparme tanto por mi peso (yo podría ser “gordo (o gorda) y feliz”), pero si sufro una muerte prematura, mis nietos no tendrán un abuelo. Pueden no importarme mis triunfos en la es-cuela, pero si no sé nada cuando sea adulto, no seré tan buen esposo/padre o esposa/madre co-mo habría podido ser. Lo que nos define no es lo que hacemos por nosotros mismos, sino lo que hacemos por nuestra familia — por las personas más importantes para nosotros. Durante la Navidad, he predi-cado bastante sobre la familia porque estamos fijando nuestra atención en la Sagrada Familia y pasando mucho tiempo con miembros de nuestra familia (¡quizás demasiado tiempo!). Una vida familiar saludable requiere sacrificio, pensar en las necesidades de los demás, y evitar el egoísmo. En esta fiesta hoy, meditamos en la Madre de Dios, la perfecta madre. Lo que marcó la vida de María es que ella guardaba todos estos acontecimientos y los volvía a meditar en su interior (Lucas 2:19). Ésta es una buena prueba (litmus test) de nuestras resoluciones de Año Nuevo: ¿Cómo me va a ayudar esta resolución a atesorar la vida de Jesús y de mis seres queridos? ¿Cómo puedo reflexionar más sobre la familia de Jesús? El modo más práctico de cumplir nuestras resoluciones, de rezar por nuestros seres queri-dos, y de reflexionar sobre cosas sagradas es comprometernos al rezo del santo rosario. Esto nos asegura que nuestro 2019 estará enfocado en Jesús, no en nosotros mismos, y esa reflexión en la Sagrada Familia nos ayudará a nosotros y a nuestras familias a atesorar las cosas sagradas y a reflexionar sobre ellas en nuestros corazones.
