ANUARY
Happy New Year!
As we move ahead with putting our plans into motion, Im very
excited to be following the Chamber's new strategic plan to take us
boldly into 2012 and the busy years to follow. As a Certified Financial
Planner, I can't stress enough how important it is to have a business
plan and as the champions of business, I feel the Chamber has one
to increase membership, advocate wisely, educate and benefit
business by creating the right environment in Greater Kingston.
I plan to shine a spotlight on the outstanding benefits the Chamber
has to offer to its membership. Our goal is to attract more members
and to retain those that we do have. In order to achieve this goal we
must provide value to our membership. We will analyze and
promote our member discounts and other programs such as fuel,
merchant services, member discounts and group benefits. We have
a strategy to really focus on this as we communicate our value to the
membership.
The Chamber will also actively advocate on our member's behalf to
help enable a strong environment for economic growth and future
investment in the business community. Through education, lobbying
and communication, we can help bring partnerships to fruition,
strengthen the network and encourage good practices in commerce.
Finally, I have been involved with the Chamber at the Board level for
many years. Now, this is my chance to lead as your President. Let me
tell you, that getting involved in a committee is the fastest way to
raise your profile in the Chamber and in the Community. Theres a
saying, "you get out of it what you put in." If you arent on a
committee and would like to increase awareness of who you are and
what you do I suggest you call the Chamber office and inquire about
which committees there are and where you might be able to make
the greatest contribution.
The GKCC offers a lot of opportunities for members to get involved.
Word of mouth marketing tends to be one of the strongest
marketing tools a small business owner can employ. So whether
youd prefer to be an attendee at an event or a committee member
who helps put the event together, take action and put these
strategies into your overall marketing plan for the year. Make sure
they get onto your calendar. If you dont get the important things on
your calendar its likely that you wont execute your plan. I look
forward to working with you in 2012.
No Time for Marketing? submitted by DavidPhillips, New Member Sales Coordinator at the Greater
Kingston Chamber of Commerce
Marketing consultant Drew McLellan says in his
Marketing Minute that a common theme in the
conversations he has with business owners is that
they dont have the time to consistently market
their business. Too busy! To busy to send out a
customer newsletter, attend an important trade
show or update their website.
But when he asks if they have the time to serve
their clients, the say, Of course, I have to stay in
business. Ditto, when he says if they have time to
send out bills.
So they find time to do whats necessary. He points
out: Its that they dont consider marketing a
necessity to stay in business. Now thats a very
different conversation.
Is this you? If so, why not plan your 2012 marketing
to include networking (marketing) through the
Chambers basic 16 events that, if used properly,
can be your marketing program at a very low
cost. The 16 events includes the 8 breakfasts where
you can sit at a table with seven other business
people for a total of 56 potential clients per year
(not counting those you network with before and
after breakfast) and the 8 Business Mixers where
you can meet and mingle with hundreds of
potential clients. Total dollars invested - less than
$200 (for breakfasts). Total time commitment forall 16 events about 32 hours out of your year.
Chamber events work to obtain new clients its
up to you to take advantage!
