Diversity, as we refer to it at the Chamber, is the presence of difference. Diversity as most people use it often emphasizes racial differences, but that should not discount the importance of other dif-ferentiators like age, gen-der, sexual orientation, ability, ethnicity, religion, interests or experiences, and so on. As part of our strategic goals at the Chamber, we

are focused on helping members and West Michigan to welcome, connect, and engage talent. We work alongside businesses and the community to provide education and training, leadership development, talent connections services and resources. Diversity and inclusion is a critical issue facing businesses and communities today. If we are going to win the “talent war,” and grow our economy regionally, Grand Rapids must be a place where all people, regardless of differences, can feel welcomed, respect-ed, engaged, and connected. The inclusion of diversity is a business and community imperative.

Why Diversity Matters

You can maximize your company’s potential by obtaining various certifications, includ-ing a Minority Business Enterprise (MBE) or a Disadvantaged Business Enterprise (DBE) Certification. Certification can provide an advantage when doing business with govern-ment agencies or seeking funding from various sources, and it can also enhance a com-pany’s ability to meet customer and client supplier diversity needs. Certification is not mandatory for operating a minority-owned business, but many companies and agencies often require certification before they will place your business on their vendor list. There are no federal or state mandates requiring private firms to use minority-owned or disadvantaged businesses, but certification helps your business work directly with corporations that have voluntarily instituted supplier diversity or minority supplier programs. CHAMBER News & Notes

Sponsored in part by

The Chamber is committed to helping companies understand the benefit of building a stronger workforce by hiring veterans. Michigan’s unemployment rate for veterans stands at over 20 percent, and our state ranks lower than its peers in the number of veteran-friendly companies. We can do better as a region and as a state to support those who protect us. The Chamber is helping businesses answer the call by working with Talent 2025 and other organizations throughout the region to bring you 10 Steps to Becoming a Military-Ready Employer: How to Source, Hire, and Engage Military-Connected Talent, a day-long program led by Sherrill Curtis, author of “Behind the Lines – Ten Steps for Engaging Military Talent.” This event will help busi-nesses understand the benefits and develop strategies for every aspect of the hiring and retention of Veterans. Date | Tuesday, November 6 Time | 7:30 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. Location | GVSU Eberhard Center, 301 W. Fulton St Cost | $99 (includes 3.5 strategic hours of HR credits)

To register, go to www.teagr.org and click on “Store” to find the registration page. Or, contact Chris Glass at [email protected] or 616.771.0311 for more information.

Workshop Discusses Benefits and Strategies for Hiring Veterans

We are currently seeking hosts for the 2013 Facing Racism pro-gram. Facing Racism is an intensive two-day program that seeks to combat and heal the wounds of racism by dissecting the complexities of racism and examining U.S. history, race, institu-tional power, self-awareness, privilege, and anti-racism. To host this two-day program, you must be able to provide a large, private, and quiet space that can accommodate seats for 20 participants as well as A/V equipment. The Chamber must have access to the room from 7:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. on each scheduled date. Participants must have the ability to park at no cost. Your participation as a Facing Racism host allows our tuition fees to remain very reasonable.

Please contact Farris Withers at 616.771.0320 or email [email protected] to commit to hosting a Facing Racism program or for more information.

The Chamber News helps you get to know fellow members by profiling two organizations in each issue. Email [email protected] if you would like to be profiled in a future member spotlight.

GREAT LAKES BOTTLING COMPANYLooking for a refreshing way to advertise and promote your events, fundraisers and business? Great Lakes Bottling Com-pany has been offering private-label bottled water and flavored

water in a variety of sizes since 2008. “We take great pride in making the highest quality Michigan-made product with a label that maximizes your marketing impact,”

said Sales Director Scott Jousma. “We’re always looking for new products to offer. We produce a couple of fun kids drinks called Tropical Koolers and Crazy Ape, and we can also provide consulting for product formula and processing to create unique flavors for a particular business.” Locally-based and privately-held, Great Lakes Bottling Company aims to provide affordable prices for the customized labels as a fresh new way for you to get your name out there. A champion for the local economy and the West Michigan community, Scott said the company looks for innovative ideas to help client businesses grow and increase profits for their customers. A proud member of the Chamber since 2011, Great Lakes Bottling Company wanted to be part of an organization that promotes standards and ethics in conducting business. “We really value the support the Chamber provides businesses—whether they’re a new member or existing one—and the vari-ety of networking opportunities for members,” he said. “I think that the Grand Rapids area is fortunate to have a community partner dedicated to the success of local companies and offer-ing whatever support they can to accomplish that goal.”

MEDITERRANEAN ISLAND INTERNATIONAL FOODS

Family-owned since 1997, Mediterranean Island International Foods offers a unique selection of authentic international goods

and fare—spanning from Western Europe to South-east Asia with a specialty in Middle Eastern, European, Indian and African prod-ucts. Selections include a wide variety of meats, cheeses, olives, and a di-

verse produce department as well as fresh breads baked daily. “We are the largest international market in West Michigan,” boasts Khalid Karadsheh, co-owner of Mediterranean Island In-ternational Foods. “Our business has grown from a small market to one of the largest in Michigan, despite the down economy.” Khalid notes that West Michigan has seen a large influx of diverse members to the community, and Mediterranean Island International Foods aims to cater to their growing needs. They also hope to offer greater exposure to a world market for the entire Grand Rapids community. “My job allows me to service our community with goods from across the world,” said Khalid. “We love seeing the pleasure it brings our customers when they can buy their native products.” A Chamber member for eight years, Mediterranean Island In-ternational Foods joined specifically to help the business grow. “It takes dedication, hard work, and a passion for your job to be an entrepreneur,” said Khalid. “The Grand Rapids Chamber of Commerce offers many services and benefits that allow us to grow as a local business in West Michigan, and we appreciate having an advocate for small business.”

company is generally defined as a company that is 51 percent or more owned and controlled by one of the following ethnic minor-ity groups: Native American, African-American, Hispanic-American, Asian/Pacific-American or Asian/Indian-American. Designation as a Disadvantaged Business Enterprise (DBE) Certification requires a business be owned and operated by one or more socially and economically disadvantaged individuals as designated by the Small Business Administration (SBA). This is a very specific classification under Section 8(a) of the Small Business Act. Details are available at www.sba.gov/mi if you are interested. Most certifying agencies require a business provide a wide array of documents such as financial records, leases, articles of incorpora-tion, business contracts, and various policies and procedures. Fees vary, as does the length of the process (30-90 days), depending on the certifying agency. Many federal and state agencies offer additional information and assistance in obtaining your certification, so get help before you are stymied. The Michigan Minority Supplier Development Council is designed to specifically help minority business owners secure certifications; you can visit www.mmbdc.com to find out more. The Michigan Small Business & Technology Development Center (MI-SBTDC) also provides many resources and assistance; visit www.misbtdc.org for a full list. Be sure to inquire about loan and lending programs for certified businesses to help you harness and develop your company’s full capabilities!

Protect our Constitution: Our Positions on the Ballot Proposals

Proposal 1 - Vote YESIntent: A referendum on the existing Emergency Manager Law that asks you to vote “Yes” or “No” on whether the law should stand. A “No” vote will be a vote to repeal the law and a “Yes” vote is to keep it. Rational: Emergency Managers are important to ensuring lo-cal governments are financially stable and do not go into bank-ruptcy. Maintaining Emergency Managers protects students and taxpayers.

Proposal 2 - Vote NOIntent: Constitutional amendment creating a new right to collective bargaining. The amendment will also repeal many reforms made by the legislature. Rational: The proposal gives a handful of special interests veto power over nearly every budget decision our state and local governments, school districts and universities make. It amends multiple sections of the Constitution and affects hundreds of laws.

Proposal 3 - Vote NOIntent: Constitutional amendment to mandate utilities obtain at least 25 percent of their electricity from renewable energy sources by 2025Rational: Energy policy does not belong in the constitution, it should be flexible to meet changing needs. In fact, the con-stitution specifically directs energy policy to be determined by the Legislature. Increased costs and other consequences of this mandate will be paid by Michigan businesses and consumers. Energy experts say it will cost Michigan at least $10 billion.

Proposal 4 - Vote NOIntent: Constitutional amendment forcing the unionization of home health care providers.Rational: Unions have taken in more than $30.4 million since 2006 in dues through the forced unionization of home health care workers, including many who are caring for family mem-bers. This practice was overturned by the legislature. This pro-posal enshrines the skimming scheme in the Constitution.

This November, Michigan voters will decide the outcome of six ballot proposals. The Chamber is very concerned about these pro-posals and the effect they will have on the business climate in Michigan. These proposals go much further than special interests are leading taxpayers to believe and will undo many of the good policies that are supporting Michigan’s economic comeback.

Below is a list detailing the Chamber’s position and rationale on the proposals.

We encourage you to share this information with friends, family and co-workers. If you have any questions, please contact Joshua Lunger at [email protected] or 616.771.0336.

Proposal 5 - Vote NOIntent: Constitutional amendment to prohibit new taxes unless approved by 2/3 majority of both chambers of the legislature or a statewide vote.Rational: This proposal would institute minority rule in the Michigan Legislature. It would also prevent tax cuts and would have prevented the repeal and replacement of the MBT.

Proposal 6 - Vote NOIntent: Constitutional amendment to require voter approval of State construction of new international bridges or tunnels for motor vehicles.Rational: This is nothing more than an attempt by the Ambas-sador Bridge Company to protect their monopoly. The proposal eliminates the State’s authority to build any necessary bridges or tunnels, not just international bridges and tunnels, putting them in a political and bureaucratic nightmare.

It was a warm and wonderful night for greeting 188 guests at the inaugural Grand Rapids House Party on August 29! Attendees en-joyed connecting and meeting new people. “The Grand Rapids House Party felt more like friendship building than networking, and I found that very refreshing,” said Ryan Montgomery of Mutually Human. Doreen Bolhuis of Gymco added, “We received raving comments from our guests and the people we met who were new to Grand Rapids. We all made many new contacts, and there was such positive energy during the entire evening.”

Visit the Chamber’s Facebook page to see some great photos from the evening. A very special thanks goes to our great party hosts: Thomas & Anne Logan, Jane Lovett & Doug Wondergem, Kara Woods & Plaza Towers, Holly & Bill Jacoby, Kristin & Mike Nipke, and Mary Kay & Bob VanDriel. Thank you for opening your private homes to Chamber guests for cocktails and casual connections! Thank you, too, to OST (Open Systems Technologies) for hosting the afterglow party, which provided a beautiful skyline view and so much networking that the night nearly didn’t end! Guests really had a great time and enjoying the roof-top views of the city. Thanks to all who came out to party with us! You helped make the first Grand Rapids House Party was a success, and we hope to you next year with lots of friends in tow!

SUSTAINABILITY SpotlightBy Norman Christopher, Executive Director, Sustainable Community Development at Grand Valley State University

Set Policies to Buy Local, Buy Sustainable! There is great discussion in the marketplace today about “green, local, and sustainable” purchasing policies. If you’re buying local, why not buy green and sustainable too?

Key aspects include:• Purchasing from local vendors for products grown, assembled, and manufactured in the West Michigan region where possible• Using ground transport, such as rail and truck• Buying products that contain high recycle content or materials• Ensuring that packaging materials are minimized in their use, contain recycled materials, and are reusable where possible• Having products that meet green and sustainability standards and certifications• Thinking responsibly! Once a local sustainability purchasing policy has been established, consider using the guidelines to buy routine things like com-puters, office supplies, and cleaning supplies. Then, start applying it to procurement of larger agenda items like renewable energy, transportation resources or fleet vehicles, energy efficiency efforts, and clean technology manufacturing processes. You’ll find the benefits this purchasing policy are reduced costs, reduced waste, an improved “green” image for your brand, and a more active local economy overall.
