Look Out for the Young & Talented!Jess Gillam is a 15 year old saxophonist who organises concerts in her home town, Ulverston, Cumbria. This spring she invited Snake Davis & his band and Courtney Pine to come down and play for the local community. Check our online listings for details. Here’s a little bit more about the young player who is not only passionate about music, but also highly entrepreneurial, at the age of 15!Jess began playing saxophone aged 7 and since then has grown a passion for the instrument and a great love for music. In 2012, she was the recipient of the Helen Sibthorpe Award from Awards for Young Musicians and this year, she was the recipient of the Edith Hemingway Award as the Best Young Musician in the North West, both of which she was delighted to receive. Jess was accepted into the Junior Royal Northern College of Music with an ABRSM

Page 9: JazzUK presents Gigs - March 2014

Scholarship in September 2011 where she studies saxophone and piano and has been awarded prizes and scholarships for demonstrating outstanding talent. She has recently attained the ABRSM Diploma, passing various elements of the exam with distinction and achieving a high pass overall. Jess performs for the Junior RNCM all over the North-West and performs in many local charitable events. She’s a regular at Zeffirelli’s in Ambleside. She has also passed on her skills to beginners, teaching saxophone at the Barracudas Carnival Arts Centre and when the band finished, she carried on and continues to teach a boy with downs-syndrome, Lewis, and has taught him to performance level. Jess runs her own concert series in Ulverston, hosting famous saxophonists such as Snake Davis, the Apollo Saxophone Quartet and Tommy Smith. Jess has been invited to play with Jools Holland and his Rhythm and Blues Orchestra this year. She is the youngest ever endorsee for Yanagisawa saxophone manufacturers.

Competition for young playersThe Reading Real Ale & Jazz Festival returns to the banks of the River Thames 17th – 19th July this year. The organisers have launched a competition to find fresh new talent for one lucky jazz band or performer, to have the chance to play live at the festival.Anyone over the age of 18, playing any form of jazz can upload a video as their audition performance to YouTube and then Facebook message (www.facebook.com/jazzandale), or tweet @RdgRealAleJazz www.twitter.com/RdgRealAleJazz) to enter. The competition closes on 22nd March 2014. All video entries will be judged by a panel including festival organisers and established local jazz groups. Five entrants will be selected and invited to a special evening to perform live in front of an audience and the judges. At the end of the evening the winner will be revealed.

Bands touring with Jazz Services’ support this month include:

Tori Freestone (cover), Rob Palmer’s Boink!, Jean Toussaint Quartet, Vitor Pereira Quintet and Zara McFarlane.

Tori Freestone TrioSaxophonist Tori Freestone has made a name for herself in a number of bands, turning several critics’ heads as co-leader of Compassionate Dictatorship and contributing significantly to the groups of Ivo Neame, Rory Simmons (Fringe Magnetic) and Andy Sheppard, amongst others. Recently signed to the Whirlwind Recordings label, with her own trio Freestone is in her element, with plenty of room to explore both the melodic and rhythmic possibilities afforded her by such a pared down, and notably chord-less set-up. Her “robust tenor work” (Jazzwise) is well suited to both the standards and originals in the group’s repertoire, and the sense of balance between the three musicians is highly impressive. The trio features Tim Giles on drums and Dave Manington on double bass.
