Albany NNORC…
Carpe Diem Quote of the Month
Oh, unpredictable, fickle March, what do you have in store
for us? Will we be sporting green t-shirts or green sweaters
to the St. Patrick’s Day parade? Will the crocuses be granted
permission to sun themselves? Won’t you take pity on us?
It’s been a wicked winter here in Albany. Would it be too
much to ask that you both enter and exit as a lamb?
“There are no rules for March. March is spring, sort of,
usually. March means maybe, but don’t count on it.”

The IRS Collects Taxes But They Will Never Call You! The Albany police have received reports of a phone scam in which the caller claims
to be from the Internal Revenue Service (IRS). In reported cases, the caller has been
calling residents and leaving a phone message that the IRS is filing a lawsuit against
you. They instruct the resident to call 202-239-7350.
The phone message is a scam in attempt for the victim to call phone scammer back
and provide personal and financial information. The Albany Police Department urges
people to be vigilant against phone scams and to never give out such information to
unverified persons.
The IRS provides the following information and safety tips regarding this scam:
* The IRS never asks for credit card, debit card or prepaid card information over the
telephone.
* The IRS never insists that taxpayers use a specific payment method to pay tax
obligations
* The IRS never requests payment over the telephone and will not take enforcement
action following a phone call.
Potential phone scam victims may be told that they owe money that must be paid immediately to the IRS or they are enti-
tled to big refunds. When unsuccessful the first time, sometimes phone scammers call back trying a new strategy. They em-
ploy cunning tactics including using fake names and IRS badge numbers; using common names and surnames to identify
themselves; spoofing the IRS toll-free number on Caller ID to make it appear that it really is the IRS calling; and threatening
victims with jail time or driver’s license revocation.
If you get a phone call from someone claiming to be from the IRS, here’s what you should do:
* If you know you owe taxes or you think you might owe taxes, call the IRS at 1.800.829.1040. The IRS employees at that
line can help you with a payment issue, if there really is such an issue.
* If you know you don’t owe taxes or have no reason to think that you owe any taxes, then call and report the incident to
TIGTA at 1.800.366.4484.

Six Ingredients or Less
Do you have a favorite recipe for our next newsletter? Here’s what to do:
Spring Vegetable Soup
Ingredients 1 tbsp extra virgin oil ¼ red cabbage, finely shredded (about 2 cups) 2 medium ripe tomatoes, seeded and chopped ½ cup canned artichoke hearts (drained and chopped) 1 cup green peas (frozen or fresh) 2 ½ cups low sodium tomato or vegetable juice (like V-8) 1 cup water 1 tsp dried basil Salt/pepper to taste
Preparation 1. In large soup pot, heat oil over medium heat. Sauté cabbage, tomatoes, artichoke hearts and peas for 10 minutes. 2. Add tomato juice and water. Bring to boil. Reduce heat, add basil and simmer for 10 minutes, or until all vegetables are tender and soup is piping hot. 3. Serve in individual serving bowls. Season to taste with salt and pepper.
