GLOBAL NEWS

BRIEF

Chinese stainless steel production growth to dip in

2020

(Source: Hellenic Shipping News)

hina’s production of stainless steel is expected to rise 5% in

2020, slowing from an 11% increase amid concentrated release of production capacity this year. China’s stainless steel prices took a roller-coaster ride in 2019, boosted by soared prices of raw material nickel after Indonesia brought forward a ban on ore exports by two years.

Indonesia’s abundant resources of lateritic nickel ore, which provides the key ingredient in stainless steel, have prompted foreign investors to build smelters and stainless steel plants in the country. But its capacity utilisation rate for stainless steel will be capped given top consumer China’s anti-dumping duties on stainless steel products from Indonesia.

Indian stainless steel industry

seeks zero duty on ferro-nickel, scrap

(Source: Business Standard)

ndian Stainless Steel Development Association (ISSDA), India’s apex

stainless steel body, has recommended some curative measures to the Indian government ahead of the Union Budget in order to augment domestic manufacturing. At present, the basic customs duty on ferro-nickel and stainless steel scrap is 2.5 per cent. Major stainless steel producing countries like China, Korea, Japan, the EU and USA have zero

import duties on stainless steel scrap. While stainless steel flat products are coming at zero duty from ASEAN and FTA (Japan, Korea) countries, the most essential raw material stainless steel scrap attracts 2.5% duty. FTA partner countries like Japan and Korea are themselves net importers of ferro-nickel given their substantial stainless steel manufacturing capacities. Thus, reduction in basic customs duty (BCD) on ferro-nickel will not harm any domestic industry.

Take us back to your childhood. How did your journey begin?

A damper designed for a gas turbine power plant in Bibiyana, Bangladesh

was born to an agricultural family in Koneripatti, Tamil Nadu. As a

student, I excelled in my studies while simultaneously grooming myself as a fine athlete. I graduated from the prestigious PSG College of Technology in Coimbatore in 1969 with a Bachelors degree in Mechanical Engineering. I believe that my participation in sports has a major role in honing me as an entrepreneur.

After my graduation, I worked for 13 years at Bharat Heavy Electrical Limited (BHEL) in Tiruchirapalli, Tamil Nadu. During this period, I had the fortune of working with great leaders such as ‘The Father of Public Sector Undertakings in India’ Dr V Krishnamurthy and

Padma Shri SVS Raghavan. At that time, I was a Deputy Manager, in-charge of welding development, and was managing nearly 200 workers. During this time, I introduced the process of plasma weld surfacing at BHEL for manufacturing of high pressure valves. This enabled us to save on consumables and increase productivity while automating labour-intensive work. In 1979, I was made the project manager for the Goindwal valve factory greenfield project in Punjab. These 13 years at BHEL helped build my knowledge and expertise as a leader and prepared me for my entrepreneurial journey.

STAINLESS POST | JINDAL STAINLESS - JANUARY 20209

In 1980, BHEL set up a boiler auxiliary equipment manufacturing plant in Ranipet, Tamil Nadu and was on the lookout for entrepreneurs to set up its ancillary fabrication units. Although a risky profile, I was excited with the idea of an assured market and the technical and quality training by BHEL that this opportunity entailed. Motivated, I started my own production unit in Ranipet with the dual objective of becoming a high-technology equipment supplier and assisting the growth of the country by aiding in import substitution. In 1985, I made a technical collaboration agreement with G+H Schallschutz GmbH, a German company, to develop industrial silencers. Soon, I started 100% indigenous manufacturing with technical assistance

from G+H. In 1985, I introduced Resonator-Type Fan Silencer for noise reduction with stainless steel internals for a Tata Power 500MW project in Bombay. In 1986, BHEL Hyderabad inked a collaboration agreement with General Electric (GE) for manufacturing gas turbines, thereby opening more business opportunities. In 1987, I founded Indira Industries and executed an order for a gas turbine exhaust system for BHEL’s Bharat Petroleum Corporation Ltd. project where the duct was constructed entirely from stainless steel grade SS304/321. Today, Indira Industries specialises in manufacturing high-tech engineered products including high-precision stainless steel components for the railways and power sector, noise-control applications, and flow-regulation applications.

Under what circumstances did you start this business?

Mr Ponnuswamy belives in understanding issues through first-hand experience and fixing them

Gas Turbine Exhaust Systems in Western Mountain, Libya manufactured and installed by Indira Industries

STAINLESS POST | JINDAL STAINLESS - JANUARY 202010

After successfully executing several supplies for BHEL’s various projects, we collaborated with Stober & Morlock GmbH, a German technical partner to develop damper technology. In 1991, Indira Industries manufactured and successfully installed its first damper (a mechanical device for gas flow regulation and isolation) for the Indian Oil Corporation Ltd.’s Baroda Gas Turbine project. Soon, with the changing market dynamics, we developed the expertise in internal insulation technology and successfully executed several projects where our competition could not succeed. With the advent of Independent Power Producers (IPPs) in India, we initiated projects with several multinational OEMs including GE, Siemens, Alstom,

Rolls Royce, and Mitsubishi. In 1990-91, we received the Nacosi Award for Best Import Substitution.

Later, we exported exhaust systems for BHEL’s Libya project, air inlet silencers with ducting for GE’s worldwide projects, and for all major gas turbine projects around world. We were twice awarded the ‘Best Supplier’ award from GE in appreciation of our outstanding performance in quality and delivery. We have also received the ‘Best Vendor’ award from BHEL Hyderabad for multiple years. One other noteworthy project during that time was our Defence project where we built 3 sets of exhaust systems for Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) for their Sukhoi test beds in Koraput, Odisha.

What are the noteworthy milestones of your business?

STAINLESS POST | JINDAL STAINLESS - JANUARY 202011

In the early 2000s, we developed the first prototype of stainless steel coach components of Linke Hofmann Busch (LHB) coaches. Over the years, we have been able to steadily increase our product range for the Indian Railways. Indira Industries has supplied complete stainless steel shells for 3 rakes of UNESCO’s World Heritage Nilgiri Mountain Railways (NMR) through the Integral Coach Factory (ICF). Apart from this, we have supplied coach components for ICF’s Srilankan projects as well as for the prestigious Train 18.

I have been intrigued with solar photovoltaic energy generation and installations ever since I first saw them during my business visits to Germany decades ago. In 2019, I realised my goal of building a 11.5MW solar PV power plant near my factories. Upon

installation, we have turned carbon negative - generating more energy through solar photovoltaic system than the energy we consume at our factories. I feel that solar technology is the way forward for greener and cleaner living for future generations.

STAINLESS POST | JINDAL STAINLESS - JANUARY 202012

I am very optimistic about the future of the Indian economy. I feel that there is a great opportunity for India because of the talented younger generation. In addition, I commend the Indian government’s ‘Make in India’ initiative. The government needs to have more faith in the local entrepreneurial talent and should make all purchases within India. Government policies are significant for the development of businesses and one way the government can assist smaller businesses is by mandating project payments through Letters of Credit (LC).

What, in your opinion, is the way forward for the Indian business environment?

Automation in workshop using robots at Indira Industries

As Peter Drucker said in his book

‘Managing in the Next Society’, India

is in a unique position in that it

“has a large enough population to

make home-market-based economic

development feasible”. So Make in India, for India, by Indians could be a

good way to progress forward.

STAINLESS POST | JINDAL STAINLESS - JANUARY 202013

We have been working closely with Jindal Stainless for close to 22 years, ever since they started manufacturing in India. Given the consistency in maintaining world-class quality products by the Company, we even recommend Jindal Stainless to our overseas partners for their projects. The relationship is more than just a transactional one, and the Company also goes out of the way to provide technical assistance when required. I believe this is what sets Jindal Stainless apart.

When and how did your journey with Jindal Stainless begin? What sets Jindal Stainless apart from your entire gamut of suppliers?

My primary advice to young people is to focus and concentrate on the work that they do. I strongly subscribe to the common traits of long-lived companies as shared in ‘The Living Company’ by Arie de Geus. I would like to share this with the young managers:

(a) Conservatism in financing,

(b) Sensitivity to the world around them,

(c) Awareness of their identity, and

(d) Acceptance of new ideas

What is your message to all the young managers out there?

Mr Ponnuswamy exhibits an effective and deeply involved participation in the most intricate issues as a leader

AVOID PLASTIC, ADOPT STAINLESS STEEL

Plastic pollution inarguably poses the biggest threat to the plants and animals across all ecosystems. Currently, the worldwide production of plastic is 300 million metric tonnes each year - a significant amount of which ends up in the oceans.

This article is authored by Executive Director, Indian Stainless Steel Development Association, Mr Rohit Kumar

nly an inadequate percentage of plastic we discarded is recycled everyday in waste-to-energy

facilities. Most of it ends up in landfills, where it may take thousands of years to decompose. In the process, it leaches out potentially toxic substances into soil and water. The impact of plastic in soil, sediments, freshwater and marine water results in a long-term negative effect on the ecosystem. There are several applications where plastic continues to be dominantly used, such as overhead water tanks and plumbing solutions for storing and supplying water in residential, commercial and other buildings. Undoubtedly, they pose serious health and hygiene issues.

In recent years, people have started cutting down on plastic consumption after realising its adverse effects on the environment. Switching to reusable, recyclable, long lasting, and environment-friendly material is the solution now being adopted; stainless steel being thr front-runner. Stainless steel is known for its ability to not degrade in any form during its service life. Even when it is discarded, it can be recycled without causing any harm to the environment.

Stainless steel is an effective alternative to plastic

INSIGHTS

Stainless steel plumbing solutions

Benefits of stainless steel solutions in modern plumbing systems

y preventing leakages, stainless steel significantly extends the life

of RCC structures, and hence the life of buildings.

Combining corrosion resistance with high strength allows reduction in section diameter of pipes, wall thickness, and weight, making them cost effective and easy to install.

Stainless steel press-fittings, in particular, are easy to use for joints, and ideal for installation in areas with limited space and access, or where fixing heat would be a problem.

No heat is required to form a joint or a groove in stainless steel pipes, reducing fire hazards. Therefore, hot work permits are not required.

B Plumbing system plays a very important role in determining the life of the RCC structure. Today, Indian architects and plumbing consultants are looking for alternatives to plastics for two important reasons, first to increase the service life of buildings and second for the deteriorating impact of plastic on environment. Stainless steel plumbing is often seen as expensive and tricky to work with. But the new and innovative “Press Fit Technology”, has made stainless steel to be a cost-effective and easy to install alternative to most systems.

Stainless Steel Water Storage Tanks: The Right Choice

vailability of potable water is a grave problem, not only in India

but the world over. Water quality has been drastically deteriorating over the years due to pollution and environmental degradation. The purity of water significantly depends upon the characteristics of material in which it is stored and supplied. For a long time, plastic was being used to store water. However, people gradually started realising the harmful effects of plastic over a period of time. Stainless steel water tanks offer the following advantages over plastic highlighted in the text box:

A No algae/fungus formation

Hygienic – Water remains in its natural form and 100% microbiologically safe

Reduces risk of water borne diseases

Eco-friendly as the tank is 100% recyclable after end of life

Compact and aesthetic design

Value for money for years

Easy to clean and practically maintenance-free

Total drain out provision provided at bottom of tank for easy cleaning

Due to rapid urbanization, decreasing resources and erratic supply of water citizens have been forced to depend more on stored water. Even today, mostly plastic tanks are in use because of their low initial cost overlooking some inherent disadvantages such as fast wear and tear, less environment friendly and poor hygiene. But with pressing concerns and increased awareness, people are interested to explore alternatives that are more environment friendly. Stainless steel will be the preferred choice of material in near future.

Today the plastic issue has gained an international attention, committed to lessen the detrimental effects of plastic on the world. It is time that stainless steel should be used as a sustainable alternate to serve the purpose.
