Have you ever noticed how we often like to shift the responsibility for things which are either beyond our control or which can admittedly be controlled, but only at the cost of a great deal of work to so-called patrons? For example, St. Peter is responsible for the weather, St. Wenceslas has the Czech lands in his care and, because this does not only involve saints, the Giant Mountains are under the rule of the so-called Krakonoš. And now imagine that nobody is responsible for the Jizera Mountains. Well, it is not exactly true to say nobody: many people are responsible for the Jizera Mountains. Some of them are highly conscientious, some a little less so, but all of them would be pleased, if somebody took over at least some of their responsibilities; somebody who is not subject to earthly laws and can therefore do things which a mere mortal may not. Given that our area has been called the “chamber pot of Europe” because of its rainy weather, no saints can be considered, because their halos would rust. And not many fairy tale characters have remained here, because they apparently all moved away with the expelled owner of the Liberec and Frýdlant Estates, Reder of Reder, after the Battle of White Mountain and were heard to shout: “The Czech Lands will see us no more till Reder’s line rules again!“ Despite that, however, one fairy tale being has remained here. Perhaps because she used to be a person and fairy tale laws are therefore not dogma for her. She is the fairy Izerína. She was born somewhere in the lowlands, as we mountain dwellers call them, into the family of a rich aristocrat. However, her father forced her into a marriage without love, so the girl collected the pearls she was meant to receive as her dowry 0and set off upstream into the mountains. In this way, she reached the base of Mount Bukovec. I imagine that it was in springtime. That the beech trees were dressed in green, which beech trees only do in spring. Perhaps the globeflowers were in bloom and all of Jizerka was golden. And the princess, drunk with that beauty, placed her jewels on the basalt cliffs of Bukovec, because she understood that what she was seeing was greater than all the treasures in the world. She assumed the name of the river which had brought her there and she became the fairy Izerína. And because she had arrived in springtime and spring has magical power, the treasure hidden in Bukovec multiplied and the groundwater, mice and moles and perhaps even the wind spread it throughout the mountains. That was long ago. The treasures were removed by the mysterious Vlachs and the appearance of the mountains changed. Only the fairy has remained. If you wish to meet her, head into the Jizera Mountains. You will be bound to recognise her as she passes by. She is “our patroness”. The Frýdlant area in the grip of historyYou will experience many unforgettable things on the trail of the Duke of Wallenstein in Frýdlant. This year’s “Wallenstein Celebrations” will enable you to seek out the town’s histori-cal legacy. Nearby Hejnice will also celebrate the 800th anniversary of its establishment and as such will confirm the exceptional nature of the Frýdlant area.

Geocaching is a game which was invented relatively recently with the development of modern technology and the internet. Put simply, it can be said to involve a modern treasure hunt. By its very nature, the game combines hiking, navigation and the internet.“Geocaching is a modern game in the form of a treasure hunt and it is played all over the world. The basic idea involves the localisation of items hidden in cases called geocaches and the subsequent sharing of experiences with others online. Geocaching is popular with people in all age groups who have a strong awareness of the player community and a feeling for the environment.”The basic principle of the game is therefore to find a hidden cache using the coordinates and encoded clues published on the internet. It is possible to use a GPS device during the search, but this is not a precondition. The players note their findings in notebooks contained within the cases and then later on special web pages on the internet. Each player can take an item from the cache and replace it with one of his or her own. The treasure hunter tries to be subtle so as not to disclose the existence of the treasure to any people in the area who may have no idea that the game even exists.Geocaching is suitable for all age groups. Children are excited when they find the treasure and are able to exchange it for something of their own after a day-long trip in the countryside, while the game offers senior citizens an interesting way of spending their free time. Geocaching is associated with a strong community of people who exchange their experiences and opinions, organise meetings and are happy to assist beginners. Geocaching is a game which draws people into the countryside and guides them towards sensitive behaviour towards the environment in which they live. Geocaching has become a way of life for many of them. The Jizera Mountains are open to this game as a means of discovery. Please accept our invitation and set out on a treasure hunt through places both well-known and forgotten.

» The Jizera Mountains Cross-Country Skiing Network – this was origi-nally established as a route for cross-country skiing network, but the fact that most of the routes lead along maintained tracks which are suitable for cyclists meant that it soon also became popular among cyclists – www.jizerskaops.cz

» The Krakonoš Trail ER-2 – a cycle trail which leads through the wonder-ful setting of the Lusatian and Jizera Mountains from Bad Schandau in Germany through Frýdlant, Nové Město pod Smrkem, the northern slopes of the Polish Giant Mountains and on to Lubawka.

» The Odra-Nisa international cycle trail – a 591 km long trail leading across the territory of the Czech Republic, Germany and Poland. It starts as cycle trail no. 3038 at the spring of the Lusatian Nisa near the town of Nová Ves nad Nisou and leads to the mouth of the Odra at the Baltic Sea – www.nisaops.cz, www.oderneisse-radweg.de

» The Smugglers’ Cycle Trail – a 40 km long trail with four stops, it con-nects the micro-regions of the Hrádek, Chrastava and Frýdlant areas. It passes in close proximity to the border with Germany and Poland and sometimes crosses it, where it offers the option of connecting to the local cycle trails.

» The single track under Smrk – this involves the first network of single track trails in the Czech Republic which has been designed to provide maximum cycling enjoyment – www.singltrekpodsmrkem.cz

You can travel along the Jizera River through the Jizera Mountains, the Western Giant Mountains, the Bohemian Paradise and the Elbe Region to Prague on the cycle trails in the Jizera Greenway corridor (hereafter simply referred to as the JGW). If you turn off from the Jizera River through Harrachov to Poland and on to the Bóbr River Valley, you will have the opportunity to get to know the neighbouring region and its countryside. The cycle trails will take you along both quiet roads and pa-ved tracks. You will discover the magic of six distinctive landscapes and get to know their natural monuments, castles, châteaux, points of technical interest and secular and ecclesiastical architecture.

The Jizera MountainsThe Jizera Greenway ER-9 European regional cycle trail (hereafter simply referred to as the JGW) begins in the Jizera Mountains with numerous tourist destinations and easily accessible networks of marked hiking and cycle trails. The Jizera Peat Bog lies on the Polish side of the mountains, for example, while the Czech side of the mountains includes the Jizera Meadow, Smrk (1124 m above sea level) with its lookout tower and the place where the Jizera River rises. The Jizera Mountains also cater for tourists in winter when the many kilometres of cycle trails are transformed into well groomed cross--country skiing trails. The JGW passes through the Jizerka Settlement and then descends with the Jizera River into the Martin Valley. In the distant past, a track connecting Silesia and Bohemia passed through these areas. Under the Harrachov settlement of Mýtiny, there is the option of turning northwards off the JGW and getting to know the adjacent region of the neighbouring country. Przelęcz Sklarska (886 m above sea level), the highest point which constitutes the boundary between the Jizera Mountains and the Giant Mountains and at the same time is the watershed divide for the Jizera, whose waters end in the North Sea, and the Odra, whose waters flow into the Baltic Sea, is close to Jakuszyce, near the state border. There are long descents from there

on both sides, after which it is possible to use the train for the return journey. Our tips:

» Using the train on the Tanvald – Harrachov – Jakuszyce line will save you a climb of 200–400 metres.

» It is possible to use the JÁRA CIMRMAN CYCLE TRAIL from Orle in Poland.

Further information: www.jizerky.cz

The Jelenia Góra BasinThe Giant Mountains European regional cycle trail (ER-2) leads from Polana Jakuszycka through the area of the Polish Jizera Mountains where the trails have only a slight gradient, but offer beautiful panoramas. Our recommen-ded trail passes through Dolina Kamiennej along the ER-2 to Szklarska Poręba which is a cycling metropolis – there are 19 cycle trails in its environs. The ER-2 passes under the Polish section of the Giant Mountains National Park to the town of Jelenia Góra which was established nine cen-turies ago and has been given the nickname “the Pearl of the Giant Mountains” because of its valuable monuments, hot springs and beautiful environs. It is then possible to join the ER-6 European regional cycle trail leading from the Jelenia Góra Basin through one of the nearby nature reserves, “Park Krajobrazowy Doliny Bobru”.Our tip:

» Using the train on the Jelenia Góra – Jakuszyce line will save you a climb of almost 500 metres.

The Giant Mountains, the Bohemian Paradise and the Elbe RegionThe cycle trail continues through the countryside and history along the Jizera River and does so not only in the Jizera Mountains, but also in the Giant Mountains, the Bohemian Paradise and the Elbe Region. The route follows the course of the river and in places it ascends in order to give cyclists the opportunity to view the countryside. It offers the bridges and points of technical

interest of the Upper Jizera Region, passes the Bozkov Caves and the Jizera Valley with the Rieger Trail and then visits the picturesque Malá Skála area at the foothills of Kozákov. Within sight of the Hrubá Skála and Příhrazské Cliffs, the river enters the open countryside of the Mladá Boleslav area in order to suddenly conjoin its waters with those of the Elbe near Prague.

THE GREENWAY JIZERA PROJECTThe Bohemian Paradise Association and its partners have prepared the Jizera Greenway Project, the goal of which is the creation of a safe and attractive corridor along the river which will be worth travelling along on foot, by bicycle, on inline skates or by boat. The Accessible Jizera Mountains! The Jablonec Cultural and Information Centrum has published a new map which has been prepared with the intention of offering increased options to visitors to the Jizera Mountains who have problems with their mobility to a greater or lesser extent. This does not only involve visitors in wheelchairs, but also families with pushchairs, small children on bicycles and hand-bikers.The map includes nine circuits: tips for trips where the starting point is always an area with car parking. The colour marked trails on the map correspond to the track markings in the terrain which take the form of coloured arrows or squares with a pictogram and at the same time the markings also show how demanding each route is (the blue marked trails are the easiest, the green trails are of medium difficulty and the red trails are the most demanding). The difficulty of the trails is also shown by their gradient profiles, including the type of surfaces differentiated by colour (gravel, concrete panel or asphalt). At the same time, you will also find information about the restaurants and accom-modation facilities in the Jizera Mountains and environs, including the accessibility of their services for visitors with limited mobility. You can receive the map and much more information at the information centre in Jablonec nad Nisou and at the other information centres in the Jizera Mountains.

The descent to the tram at Horní Hanychov: 4 km.This relatively demanding trip with a significant upward gradient begins at the Hodkovice railway station. The red marked trail initially leads along the Mohelka Valley, but it soon begins to climb to the municipality of Záskalí. The route crosses the former “Prague” road at its highest point and continues to the peak of Javorník. The popular Giant Barrel restaurant stood there until a fire in 1974. A copy of the former restaurant is currently under construction. Follow the blue marked trail from Javorník to Ještěd. After you pass through the forest, views of the Ještěd Ridge and the Liberec Basin with the Jizera Mountains will open up before you. After the first sec-tion, you will reach the U Šámalů Restaurant and then the Czech Hiking Club’s chalet at Pláně pod Ještědem. To the right along the route, you will see the Monument to the Camp of the People which recalls a large Czech-German demonstration from 1870. The trail then ascends from the chalet across the Black Peak (Černý vrch) (the skiing facility and the chairlift on the right) and you will pass the Ještěd tavern and come to the peak of Ještěd along the road. The reward for your exertions will be beautiful views of many of the places along the route. If you decide to descend to the tram in Horní Hanychov, you can continue along the blue marked trail. Points of interest in Frýdlant – what you have yet to see The Church of the Discovery of the Holy Cross in Frýdlant, an inconspicuous decanal church in the middle of the town, is enshrouded in the mystery associated with remarkable monuments. It was built on the site of the original wooden Chapel of St. Barbora from 1346 and over the years it underwent a number of modifications and alterations. The most extensive of them (in the baroque style) took place between 1782 and 1783, while it underwent neo-gothic modifications at the end of the nineteenth century. Restoration work (for example, on the painting of Melchior of Redern and on the bells) has been ongoing there since 1999 and an inspection of the tomb ceiling started in 2010.The church’s history is inseparably associated with the aristocratic houses of Bibrštejn and Redern which ruled the Frýdlant estate and it is home to their tombs. The Redern tomb dating from the year 1600, which Catherine of Redern dedicated to her deceased hus-

band, the imperial general Melchior of Redern, along with the largest posthumous portrait in Bohemia, is a work of the high renaissance period. She had the exceptionally sized oil painting (a 3.5 m square) painted in 1600–1605. Three of the church’s original six bells have survived. The largest of them with a diameter of 90 cm and a height of 71 cm dates from 1560 and it came from Ludvíkov pod Smrkem. The middle one dating from the beginning of the 16th century is 71 cm high and has a diameter of 85 cm and it originally came from Kunra-tice. The smallest bell (the death bell) dates from 1719 and has a diameter of 52 cm and a height of 40 cm.The church’s environs include a Marian column dating from the 18th century and the Way of the Cross. TIPS FOR TRIPS

From Lidové sady to the reservoir in the heart of the mountainsLiberec, Lidové sady – the Miller’s Cross (Mlynářův kříž) – Rudolfov, the reservoir – the Bedřichov Reservoir on the Black Nisa – the Maliník Ridge – Rudolfov, the Czech Chalet (Česká chalupa), the buss stop. Total: 14 kmFollow the blue marked track to the Bedřichov Reservoir from the terminal tram stop in Lidové sady, Liberec. The trail gradually rises through the suburban forests to the Miller’s Cross. This wayside cross stands at the intersection of several forest trails and it was built in 1864 from the estate of the Rudolfov miller Anton Jäger who died in the same year. After less than half and hour, you will come to Rudolfov where you can see a small reservoir dating from 1928. The trail now ascends through the Black Nisa Valley: the steep slopes on the left-hand side are called the

Virgin Slope (Panenská stráň). You will ascend 3.5 km up to the level of the dam on the Bedřichov Reservoir. The track turns to the right there. It is possible to find the so-called Stammel Monument to the right in the forest. This was the site of a famous shootout between a gamekeeper and a poacher. You will soon reach the reservoir dam from which there is a view not only of the water’s surface, but also of the expansive forests in the rear with the Bird Buttes (Ptačí kupy). The reservoir was built in 1902–1905.Continue along the green marked track from the reservoir to the Maliník Ridge. Along the way, you will pass the Melzer Monument which recalls an accident associated with the construction of the reservoir and the wayside cross known as the Lichtenecker Cross. You can descend to the Czech Chalet (bus stop) from the Maliník Ridge or head back to Lidove sady. O. Simm

TIPS FOR TRIPS

The view from the Cat Rocks (Kočičí kameny)Bílý Potok, Czech Railways – Hubertka – the Cat Rocks (Kočičí kameny) – the Bártl Chalet (Bártlova bouda) – Bílý Potok, Czech Railways. Total: 7.5 km.Take the red marked track from the railway station in Bílý Potok and head shortly towards the road. Turn left off the track straight away, however, and you will cross pastures before you come to a forest. The track rises from there through mixed forests. It often changes direction and you will therefore have to pay increased attention in order not to lose the track markings. The Hubertka Chalet, which has stood there for more than one hundred years, will suddenly appear before you. Over the years, it has served various purposes, but it now performs its original function again, i.e. that of hiking accommodation. Refreshments are available at the buffet below the chalet. A single-track cycle trail (a new feature in our mountains) has passed through there since 2009. A short turnoff from the chalet will lead you to the Cat Rocks. The route leads up steps which were cut into the cliff in 1923, from the top of which there is an interesting view of the Smědá Valley and the northern slopes of the mountains. After returning to the chalet, continue along the red marked track to the Bártl Chalet (Bártlova bouda). The track leads along a forest asphalt road, but the views will more than make up for this. A secondary road will take you back to Bílý Potok from the restaurant at the Bártl Chalet. Otokar Simm

Through Hell (Peklo) to the SpaHejnice – Raspenava – Peklo (Hell) – Lázně Libverda – Hejnice. Total: 11 km.Take the train to Hejnice or park in the car park at the railway station, if you prefer to use your own transport. The red marked track will lead you from there to the centre with its dominant feature of the Church of the Visitation of the Virgin Mary. After a visit to the church, continue across the stone bridge over the River Smědá with the statue of St. John of Nepomuk and then turn right onto the blue marked track. You will pass the Wild-ner wayside cross and will then soon thereafter come to a signpost. There, you will leave the Old Pilgrimage Route which you have taken from Hejnice and continue along the green marked track on the left-hand bank of the Smědá. The results of last year’s flooding are still apparent in a number of places, even though much of the damage has been cleared away. Cross the main road in Raspenava at the petrol station. Now, take the yellow marked track all the way to Libverda. There is then a short section of secondary road from which you will turn off to the right. Before you lies a pleasant trail passing through the wide gully of the Hell Stream (Pekelský Potok). It is bordered by a mixed forest on the left, while there are pastures on the right and views of the northern slopes of the Jizera Mountains to the rear. You will then be welcomed by the first chalets of the somewhat dreamy settlement of Peklo (Hell). A small detour will enable you to see the picturesque Petr fishpond and then, after returning to the signpost, you will head over the slight knoll to Lázně Libverda. The spa colonnade, the modified park or the option of taking re-freshments will make a pleasant end to your trip. Now all you have to do is return over the knoll to nearby Hejnice.

Bedřichov – Nová Louka (3 km) – Hřebínek (6.5 km) – the Rauscheck Trail (Rauscheckova cesta) – the Large Štolpich Valley (údolí Velkého Štolpichu) (10 km) – the Štolpich Waterfall (11.5 km) – Ořešník (13,5 km) – Hejnice, the church (16.5 km) – Hejnice, the railway station (17 km).The springtime transformation of the forests is one of the most impressive periods in the Jizera Mountains. For this reason, the route of this walking trip in the mountains will initially take you through thick young spruce forests followed by old beech woods. The trip starts at the terminal stop for the no. 1 bus in Bedřichov. Walk around the small reservoir along the yellow marked track towards Nová Louka. Only the hunting chalet, originally the seat of the master glassmaker and later renovated to meet the needs of the local gentry, has survived from the former glassmaking settlement. A glassworks functioned there from 1756 to 1817. After leaving the quiet forest enclave, follow the green track markings for quite a long time. Head past the “U Gregorova kříže” intersection and take the Hejnice track to the well-known intersection known as Hřebínek (a refreshment kiosk). From Hřebínek, the trail descends through the Small Štolpich Valley along the so-called Rauschek Trail (Rauscheckova cesta). Soon views will

open up on the left-hand side of the slopes of Zadní and Přední Divočák, as well as of the valley leading up to Nové Město pod Smrkem before them. The trail is lined with ancient beeches and massive cliffs as it descends to the Large Štolpich Valley and to the “Nad Ferdinando-vem” intersection. The rocky and wild scarps of Ořešník crowned with a cross will rise above your heads. From there, it is about half an hour uphill to the Large Štolpich Waterfall (vodopád Velkého Štolpichu). Take the legendary Štolpich Trail, finished in 1891, up to the second bridge. It was used to connect Ferdinadov with Smědava. The roar of the mountain stream with its many cascades and massive boulders in the river bed will form the backdrop for the next part of the trail. The red marked trail winds from the waterfall upwards to Ořešník. The cliff lookout has been accessible since 1898, when the Hejnice branch of the mountain asso-ciation had a steep staircase with a hand rail cut into the rock. The view of the surrounding hills and the Frýdlant area is magnificent. After the descent to Hejnice, you can end the trip with a tour of the Basilica of the Visitation of the Virgin Mary or of the exhibition hall located in the former Franciscan monastery. The railway station is about 10 minutes away. Otokar Simm

Through the Jizera forests to the Hejnice church

The Hejnice anniversaryHejnice will celebrate its 800th anniversary in 2011. The first mention of this pilgrimage town dates from 1211. There is a legend which is connected with this date. An old sieve maker was wandering through the region and looking for suitable wood for his sieves. Exhausted from his trek and his worries about his ill family, he lay on a rocky mound under a tree and went to sleep. There, he had a vision of the Virgin Mary who told him to go home and that his wife and child would be well. And this truly did happen, so he returned to the site and inserted a small carved statue into a hollow in the old linden tree as an expression of thanks. Other people heard of this miracle and started to go to the same site and to pray for this or that. In 1211, a small tabernacle was built, at which pilgrims from the wider environs began to gather. Over time, this became a church, a basilica and part of an adjacent monastery. And so it was that Hejnice was established 800 years ago.A number of anniversary celebrations have been prepared for the visitors and citizens of Hejnice this year. They will be divided into several individual events in the first half of the year and will culminate during the traditional Hejnice fair in the first weekend of July.Within the framework of the anniversary celebrations, you can look forward to a special concert in the basilica, an exhibition of photographs, archive materials and chronicles and special sports events in the first half of the year and we will also endeavour to secure the screening of film material which in some way concerns Hejnice. The full list and timetable of the celebrations is still under construction and we recommend that you check the town’s website at www.mestohejnice.cz and the posters put up throughout the region for the best information. The celebrations will culminate on Saturday the 2nd and Sunday the 3rd of July 2011. On those dates, you will be able to enjoy the traditional craft fair in the area of the small park in front of the church which will once again offer a wonderful oasis of peace and quiet. There will also be a special steam train which will travel along the local train line on the Saturday and thus offer an alternative form of transport to our event. The night sky on Saturday will shine with a magnificent fireworks display. There will be stands selling all kinds of produce running along the whole street from the fun fair to the basilica, just as there should be at a fair. The event will also include the sale of souvenirs pertaining to this year’s anniversary, including a memorial coin and other commemorative items for this year. J. Demčák

Smržovka – Jiřetín pod Bukovou – Josefův Důl – Mariánskohorské Boudy – the Breached Dam (Protržená přehrada) – Jizerka – the Jizera Valley – Martinské Údolí – Kořenov, the railway station. A total of ca 30 km. A relatively demanding route with significant climbs and several difficult descents.

This cycle trip offers you an opportunity to visit several local museums. It begins in Smržovka (the Museum of Local History, Armoured Technology). Start at the T. G. Masaryk Square (náměstí T. G. Masaryka) and head along the secondary road in the direction of Horní Tanvald. You will pass under the railway viaduct (a technical monument) and then turn left onto a local road before you arrive at the River Kamenice. This will take you to Jiřetín pod Bukovou (the Area Museum). Continue through the Kamenice Valley along the road which leads through Albrechtice v Jizerských horách to Josefův Důl (the Museum of Local History). The glassmaking past of this region is visible in a number of places, but the two glassworks in Josefův Důl are now inactive. The Church of the Transformation of Our Lord dating from 1862–1865 is worth a visit; there is a memorial to the writer Gustav Leutelt, who was born and wrote there, nearby. Head to Mariánskohorské Boudy from Josefův Důl. The forest asphalt trail will initially lead you along the small Jedlová River, but it later turns right and begins to climb more steeply. The former pastoral and woodcutting enclave of Mariánskohorské Boudy has a history stretching back over more than three hundred years, but today it consists of just four cottages. You can then easily descend to the Breached Dam (Protržená přehrada) (a cultural monument, a learning trail). The embankment dam of the reservoir on the White Desná was breached in 1916. The next section of the route up to Jizerka is the most demanding; this entire section includes steep climbs and descents. You will reach the road in the Black Des-ná Valley and you should then head left before turning off it to the right shortly afterwards. This is followed by a relatively long climb ending at the ridge known as Vlašský hřebeň. From its peak, you will descend to a track known as the Promenade (Promenáda) and

then continue to Jizerka (the Museum of the Jizera Mountains). The final section of this cycle trip leads past Bukovec and then includes a long descent to the Jizera Valley. The railway viaduct arching over the river is also an interesting testament to the technical skills of our ancestors. You will reach the road in the settlement of Martinské Údolí and it will soon begin to ascend to the railway station in Kořenov (the Cog Railway Museum). You can then return to your starting point by train. It is also possible to take an easier route from Jizerka to Kořenov, if you go to Horní Polubný, from where you can descend to the railway station. Otokar Simm

In 1968, the Jizera Mountains were declared a protected nature reserve due to their unique flora and fauna. However, when the cloudless night falls over the local landscape, the Jizera Mountains unveil yet another treasure – the heavens strewn with stars. Up to 2000 stars and the beautiful silvery strip of the Milky Way are visible overhead in the open night sky at Orle, Jizerka or Rozdroże Izerskie. However, such a view is increasingly rare. More than half of all Europeans cannot see this night sky from their places of residence because of light pollution. In towns and cities, we can only see the brightest stars and it is only possible to see the Sun, the Moon or the planets in the solar system clearly. If we wish to view the most distant extremities of our galaxy, to see star clusters and nebulae and neighbouring gala-xies or even to look back billions of years into the history of the universe, we must find an area of sky which has not been polluted with light sources. And that is preci-sely what can be found in the Jizera Mountains, where an international “dark reservation” was declared in 2009 under the name of the Jizera Dark Sky Area (known by its Czech abbreviation “JOTO”). More information on this project can be found at www.izera-darksky.eu.

The Liberec Astronomers’ Club, a branch of the Czech Astronomical Society, is active at JOTO where it holds popularising and educational events for the public in cooperation with the Astronomical Institute of the Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic.

The following events have been planned for this year:

» 23. 7. – The St. Anne Glass Celebration at Jizerka – daytime viewing of the Sun (under clear weather conditions) with an explanation of the physical processes which are taking place at our nearest star will take place upon the occasion of this event.

» 6. 8. – The Night of Stars – a traditional event held at Jizerka by the Museum of the Jizera Mountains: under clear weather conditions, the viewing of the sky using astronomical telescopes.

» September – An Astronomical Day at Stog Izerski – lectures and viewings from the Polish side of the Jizera Mountains.

Entry is FREE to all of these events.

The reconstruction of the former rectory at the Church of St. Anne in Jablonec is currently underway. This historical building, which was home to the Scheybals from 1966, will become a new facility which will enrich the town’s cultural life.Josef Václav Scheybal was a significant Czech ethnographic artist. He and his wife were involved in heritage care and regional ethnography. They both created remarkable collections which they used when writing their specialist and popular educational books. An important source of learning for the Scheybals was their regular trips into the surrounding region, during which they documented the historical monuments and the transformations in the landscape. The newly cre-ated learning trail will take walkers to those interesting locations which the Scheybals visited most frequently. The first part of the trail which will be officially opened on 19th June of this year will consist of an enclosed circuit to the south of Jablonec. The route has been chosen so that the trail will be able to be expanded in future to include new circuits. Next year, the trail will be extended to Turnov and connected to sites where walkers will be able to view thematic exhibitions dedicated to the life and works of the Scheybals. The learning trail will contribute to the interconnection of the Jizera Mountains and the Bohemian Paradise and will help to make a number of interesting, but not so well known places in the environs of Jablonec nad Nisou accessible to visitors. The route of the first part of the learning trail will lead from Horní Dobrá Voda to Rychnov. It will

include a stop at the Rychnov Town Museum which is dedicated to the local painting traditions. From there, the trail will continue to Pelíkovice and to the Kopanina lookout tower via the ridge track. It will then turn back to the north, to Pulečný.The learning trail will consist of several stops at the sites of historical monuments, points of natural interest or other landmarks. There will be information stands with textual and pictorial panels at the sites. The texts will inform visitors of the past and present of each site. The panels will also include documentational drawings by J. V. Scheybal and excerpts from selected national history texts by Jana Scheybal. There will also be a schematic map of the trail showing all of the individual stations.Printed materials will be prepared for everybody who decides to follow in the footsteps of the Scheybals and to discover the historical and natural beauty of the environs of Jablonec. These materials will simplify the visitors’ orientation on the trail and provide all of the necessary information. It will be possible to complete the learning trail on foot or by bicycle. It will be easily accessible for people of all age categories, including families with children and senor citizens. The author of the learning trail is Jan Strnad and thanks to the financial support from the Jizera Mountains Tourist Region it has been realised by the Jablonec Information and Cultural Centre with contributions from the town of Rychnov u Jablonce nad Nisou, the municipalities of Pulečný and Frýdštejn and the MY Town Gallery in Jablonec nad Nisou. www.jablonec.com

The mysterious Kittel MuseumThe museum houses magic books, a secret den and an exhibition of folk medicine. A new feature this year is an exhibition of prehistoric axes from Kittelovsko.

Few figures are so entwined in so many myths and le-gends as Jan Josef Antonín Eleazar Kittel (1704–1783), a famous doctor and healer from the area between the Jizera Mountains and the Giant Mountains. He was an excellent healer, received patients from as far away as Vienna or Prague and cared for the local aristocracy and the poor mountain folk alike. Emperor Joseph II personally visited him at his home. His medical successes were so great that people in Bohemia would say “not even Kittel can help” upon a person’s death. He not only used his personal funds to build his enormous house called the “Burk”, but also the adjacent church, school and rectory. His contemporaries were unable to account for Kittel’s medical successes, wealth and fame in any other way than by saying that he had sold his soul to the Devil. If you wish to learn more about Dr Kittel, visit the Kittel Museum. It is located in the municipality of Krásná--Pěnčín, about 5 km to the south east of Jablonec nad Nisou. It has been established in house no. 11 which stands between the “Burk” and St. Joseph’s Church. The museum’s interactive exhibition not only focuses on the life and healing of the famous Dr. Kittel, but also on the history of Kittelovsko and folk healing. The exhibition’s greatest attractions include, for example, Kittel’s alchemy workshop or the replica of the so--called “Smržovka grimoire”, a book of magic ascribed to Kittel. Nature lovers can tour the garden of healing herbs which is located in front of the museum. A new feature this season will be an independent exhibition of stone axes from the Stone Age. They were excavated and made in 5500 BC at sites less than one

kilometre from the building of the Kittel Museum. At that time, the local axes were a significant trading article in all of Central Europe and archaeologists have found them in such distant places as the Rhine, Northern Italy or South Moravia.

The former glassworks trailHarrachov, the railway station – the border crossing – Orle – the bridge on the Jizera, the border crossing – Jizerka – the Jizera Valley – the Hope Valley (Údolí Naděje) – Harrachov, the railway station. Total: 19 km.The trip will take you through the Czech-Polish border area and will pass through three settlements whose for-mer development was associated with the production of glass. The starting point is the Harrachov railway station, from which you will continue upwards to the border crossing. There, you can either head to the right on the green marked track or to the left on the unmarked track. In both cases, you will come to the Orle settlement after approximately 1.5 hours. A glassworks operated there from 1754 to 1888. Its site is now marked and a wooden statue of a glassworker stands next to it on a stone base. At present, however, Orle is a tourist destination. Tourists flock there in summer and winter from the entire tri-nation border region. A new feature in Orle from last year is a model of the solar system. Stones representing the individual planets have been set along the way to Velká Jizera and their distances are to scale. Continue from Orle around the distinctive cliff of Granicznik to the border bridge on the Jizera and you

will then come to the first cottages in Jizerka. Glass was also made there in the past. The first glassworks was built in 1828–29 and the second in 1867. Even though the glassmaking prosperity ended there at the beginning of the 20th century, the so-called new glassworks still remains there today. Nowadays, it houses a guesthouse. When visiting Jizerka, you should be sure to visit to the small Museum of the Jizera Mountains. The next part of the trip will take you along the red marked track around Mount Bukovec, from where the track descends to the Jizera Valley. It is possible to en-liven this relatively featureless section with a swim in the Jizera which flows from the left beneath the track. The railway viaduct, under which is the signpost which will guide you to the seclusion of the Hope Valley (Údolí Naděje), is an interesting technical monument. Glass was also made and melted there between 1796 and 1884. The territory on the left-hand bank of the Jizera was part of Poland from 1945 to 1958. An international treaty on an exchange of land enabled the operation of the railway line up to the Harrachov railway station. It is about a 30 minute ascent to it from the Hope Valley (Údolí Naděje). The glassmaking tourOn the trail of the glassworksBedřichov – Nová Louka – the Blatný fishpond – Kristiánov – the Josefův Důl fishpond – Hrabětice – Janov nad Nisou. Total: ca 15 kmStart at the terminal bus stop in Bedřichov and head along the yellow marked track to Nová Louka. Before you get there, you can visit the site of a glassworks which was in operation for over two hundred years from 1598. An archaeological dig was realised there at the beginning of this century and it managed to mark out the site of the glassworks. On the next part of the track, you will soon reach a monument to the mountaineers who died in the Peruvian Andes under an enormous avalanche in 1970. Most of them came from our area and the monument to them was unveiled in 2010. The forest tracks will then take you to Nová Louka. As the glassworks required huge amounts of wood for their operations, they moved into the mountains in or-der to be close to this resource. And so there was also a glassworks there. It was built by the Bedřichov master glassmaker Johann J. Kittel in 1756 and it remained in operation until 1817. The master glassmaker’s house built in 1797 has been preserved and it is now a popular “little château” known as the Šámal Chalet (Šámalova chata).

Take the blue marked track from Nová Louka to Kristiánov. After less than one kilometre, you will pass the picturesque Blatný Fishpond, where the manorial sawmill operated from 1780, and then the Grouse Stone (Tetřeví kámen) with a crucifix at the top of a slight climb. You then soon come to the best known glassmaking settlement. The Kristiánov glassworks was built in 1775. The Monument to Glassmaking in the Jizera Mountains and the small cemetery of the former inhabitants are located there as a remnant of those times.Take the yellow marked track from Kristiánov to the Josefův Důl reservoir and on to Hrabětice (a bus servi-ce). From there, you can descend along the relatively unfrequented road through Malý Semerink to Janov nad Nisou. This municipality also owes its development to the glass industry and the Vitrum glassworks still functions there today.

Nowadays, the last structure of the former significant glassmaking settlement of Kristiánov, Liščí bouda (the former glass-makers’ pub), recalls the recent past of the defunct glassworks of the Jizera Mountains established by the well-known Riedel family in 1775. There is an exhibition there entitled Kristiánov – the Key to the Heart of the Jizera Mountains, where you will be able to become acquainted with the history of the place and the glassmaking production. There is a model of the glassmaking settlement on display there. The former settlement also includes a small cemetery with the remains of the glassworks’ owners. After the closure of the glass-works after approximately 100 years of operations, the Manor House was converted into a hunting lodge, the appearance of which has been pre-served. At present, it is used as a guesthouse and a restaurant and it is a popular and traditional destination for hikers, cyclists and skiers due to its position in the heart of the Jizera Mountains.

The Jizerka Settlement – the highest located municipality and the most beautiful corner of the mountains. The settlement consists of around twenty buildings (the Manor House, the Pyramid, the Glassworks, the Old Sawmill, the Customs House, the Old School – the Museum of the Jizera Mountains and so on). The connection with civilisation is secured by means of a main-tained mountain road. The dominant feature of Jizerka is the highest basalt volcanic peak in Central Europe, the mountain known as Buko-vec (1,005 m above sea level). It includes a nature reserve and a learning trail passes over it (and through all of Jizerka). The excursion in-cludes a unique 100-year-old glass cutting plant which is driven by transmissions and a water turbine. Everything is in almost its original form and fully functional. In 2002, a mini-brewery and restaurant were added to the glassworks facility with a view of the glassworks hall with its furnaces. Visitors can thus watch the glasswork-ers while they are at work. The museum consists of a historically and technologically comprehen-sive collection of historical glass.

This logo will lead you to high-quality products which have been produced in an environmentally friendly manner, are of local origin, use predominantly natural raw products, are mostly handmade and are associated with local traditions. Only those products which have fulfilled the aforementioned criteria have been given a certificate enabling the producer to use the new regional brand and thus to represent the area of the Jizera Mountains. The brand was established at the turn of 2010 when the certification committee approved the first 24 products. They include foodstuffs (dairy products, meat, drinks) and craft products (ceramics, glass, jewellery, wooden toys, textile products and so on). If you wish to become acquainted with the individual products and to gain more information and contacts, visit the website at www.jizerske-vyrobky.cz. A summary of the certificated products and their producers can be found in a printed catalogue which is available at the tourist information centres

in the area. You will certainly also come across the products at local traditional markets, fetes and fairs or at specialised shops. Any traditional and conscientiously performed craft bears the spirit of its region and thus helps to create its uniqueness. As such, these crafts deserve our support.

A competition for you:If you come across a producer or product bearing the Regional Product of the Jizera Mountains logo during a trip, a walk or a holiday in the Jizera Mountains, take a photo with them and send it to us at [email protected] with a note of when and where it was taken. The legacy of Ferdinand Porsche, one of the most significant designers the automobile industry has ever known, has now received a dignified exhibi-tion worthy of a man of his calibre. A permanent exhibition dedicated to the life and works of this famous native son of Vratislavice was opened on 10th October. This attractive commemorative exhibition offers multimedia presentations of the milestones in the life of Ferdinand Porsche, but also an absorbing view of the history of the brand which he established. Car lovers will thus be able to acquaint themselves with his projects for the auto-mobile industry which he is firmly associated with in the public consciousness thanks to his legendary “beetle” (VW) and the Porsche brand of vehicles. The memorial includes exhibitions of exclusive models of Porsche vehicles. It is possible to tour the exhibitions with an expert guide and not only in Czech, but also in German and in English. The arrangement of private tours of the memorial for groups is also possible.

How many fans are aware of the fact that the legendary Professor Ferdinand Porsche was born in Bohemia, spent his youth here and bore our citizenship until the age of 59. Ferdinand Porsche certainly deserves to have more known about him in his native land. Without his love of technology the world would have been deprived of wonderful works of art and amazing inventions and so all car lovers are invited to the Ferdinand Porsche Memorial at the VRATISLAVICE 101010 Cultural Centre which exudes the sweet smell of speed and luxury.

One of the anniversaries of the Mšeno Reservoir, also known as the Jablonec Reservoir, falls during this year. The reservoir has been called the jewel of Jablonec nad Nisou and it greatly contributes to the pleasantness of the Jablonec way of life. The reservoir was not built as a recreational reservoir, but as part of the anti-flooding measures in the Jizera Mountains which were established as a reaction to the catastrophic floods of 1897. The construction of the system of reservoirs was undertaken by the Water Cooperative for the Regulation of Waterways and the Construction of Reservoirs in the Lusatian Nisa Catchment Area. Prof. Dr. Otto Intze of Aachen, a specialist in hydraulic structures, designed the system of valley reservoirs which were built in the Jablonec and Liberec areas in the first decade of the twentieth century. He was also the author of the project for the Jablonec Reservoir, albeit that he did not live to

see its completion. And what about the third anniversary? The first one-hundred-year anniversary occurred in 2009. The reservoir was structurally completed – with the excep-tion of the tunnel – before the end of 1909 (the official inspection of the finished sections of the structure took place on 21st December). A further one-hundredth an-niversary occurred in 1910 when the Water Cooperative received official permission to use the structure on 14th January and at the same time the miners cutting the tunnel from both sides met up in the middle during the night of 14th and 15th January. And the third 100-year anniversary falls this year: both of the site journals which were kept on the structure were concluded on 30th September 1911 and the final official inspection of the finished hydraulic structure took place on 8th November. Nové Město pod Smrkem, the railway station – Kyselka – Streitův obrázek – Smrk, the lookout tower – the Heveanly Ladder (Nebeský žebřík) – Tišina – Hubertka - Bílý Potok, the railway station. Total: 16 km.Variant: Tišina – U Červeného buku – Nové Město pod Smrkem. Total: 17 km.

Set off to Smrk from the Nové Město square by follow-ing the blue marked trail. Behind the town the trail ascends around the reservoir to the edge of a forest and before long the turnoff to the Nové Město mineral spring will appear before you. You can collect the refreshing mineral water from the spring building and take it with you on the walk. Pass the Liberation Stone (Kámen osvobození) which was erected there on the 10th anniversary of the establishment of the Czecho-slovak Republic and continue to the intersection at the Streit Picture (křižovatka u Streitova obrázku). The crucifix on the beech tree recalls the story of a baker

from Nové Město who once affixed it there when burdened by a guilty conscience. The trail ascends the flanks of Smrk to the north-west and it was initially marked out in the year 2000. It will lead you to the summit and to the lookout tower which was officially opened in 2003. Its lookout platform is located at a height of 18 metres above the ground. As well as the lookout tower on Smrk, you will also find the memorial to the poet Theodor Körner who climbed the mountain in 1809 or the modern statue of the spirit of the Jizera Mountains. The trail known as the Heavenly Ladder (Nebeský žebřík) because of its steepness will initially serve to take you back down to the valley. You should descend to the red marked forest track and then set off to Tišina where a short turnoff to the left will take you to a cliff-top lookout. The red marked track will take you to the Hubertka Chalet. You will come to the railway station in Bílý Potok after a further 45-minute walk from there.

The Tanvald Centre flying company invites tourists to undertake circular, sightseeing and photographic flights. You will see Tanvald, Malá Skála, the Bohemian Paradise and the Giant Mountains and their environs from above. If you already know the beauty of the Jizera Mountains from the point of view of a hiker, from the seat of a bicycle or from the views provided by lookout towers, all that is needed to complete the experience is the view from above. The “air tourist” can choose a circular or sightseeing flight, a photo flight with the repeated circling of a chosen target or the more daring may choose a high altitude flight with an ascent to a height of 1000 metres. You will be able to recall your holiday experience from your photos or video recordings.
