Readers are LeadersReaders are leaders! This year we will focus on facilitating a better understanding of the qualities
of a leader and leadership skills through the study of the lives of leaders. The librarian will teach a biography module complimented with graphic organizers, creative technology, and Accelerated Reader.
From October through January, the library media specialist will provide a collection of biographies for each classroom. Graphic organizers will be provided with the biography collection.
Reading Group Discussions
Read a book. Use higher level questions to guide the discussion.

Graphic Organizer School Wide Initiative
Graphic organizers are visual tools facilitating students’ understanding of conceptual material.
Students have used and will use graphic organizers within the classroom. Four have been selected to use school wide. They will be taught in the library and reinforced in the classroom. They are the Venn Diagram, lotus square, two column notes, and fishbone.
Venn Diagram
• The Venn Diagram is used to compare and contrast. Students can use the terms “same” and “different” to extract details from a story, facts, etc.

Lotus Square or Lotus Chart
The lotus square or lotus chart can be used to organize ideas. A main idea or topic can be centered in the middle of the lotus square and eight supporting details or facts can be elaborated around the center square.

Two column notes can be used to organize topic/ details, cause/ effect, prediction/ event, vocabulary, etc.

Year 2 of the Accelerated Reader program
• During the week of September 10th, classes and teachers will visit the computer lab to receive AR training. AR is tentatively scheduled to begin on Friday, September 14th. Teachers will receive a class list with username and passwords for students and teacher, directions for accessing reports, letter to parents, etc. Students will receive a quarterly grade for AR as tentatively scheduled:

AR testing window
Accelerated Reader will begin on Friday, September 14, 2012 and end on Wednesday, June 5, 2013.
Students may take tests in the classroom or computer lab.
Students will receive training on AR including policies and procedures and checkout two books during the week of September 10th.
