    By Kris Morrissey, American Consulate

    Consulate Corner:

    Grateful For American Citizenship

November is the month when weAmericans consider things for which weare grateful. This year, my list includesthe New York Giants continued statusas an NFL team; enough pumpkin pielling to make my favorite holidaydessert; and, of course, my friends and

family. But wherever we are in theworld at our Thanksgiving table, manyof us also may want to add our U.S.citizenship to that list.

During my time here, I have hadmany Brazilian friends and neighborsask some important questions abouttheir or their childs or relatives

potential U.S. citizenship. Here are theanswers to some of the most commoninquires.

Should I just get a tourist visa for everyonein the family including our son who wasborn in the United States as we just want totake a quick jaunt to Disney?

No. U.S. citizens are required to travel to theUnited States on U.S. passports, with very rare

exceptions. You should make an appointment withthe American Citizen Services Unit to determine ifyour child is a U.S. citizen and thus entitled to a U.S.passport.

Both my wife and I are U.S. citizens, butneither of us has lived there since we were

children. Are our kids who were born in Brazileligible for U.S. citizenship?

Yes, if the children were born in wedlock to twoU.S. citizen parents who were both U.S. citizens atthe time of the childs birth.

I was studying at a university butoverstayed in the United States to have mydaughter. Is she a U.S. citizen?

Yes. Any child born on U.S. soil, no matter thelegal status of the parents at the time of birth, iseligible for U.S. citizenship. The only exception to

this rule is children born to parents in diplomaticstatus (on a diplomatic visa).

My mom is Brazilian and my dad isAmerican. Am I eligible for U.S. citizenshipthrough my father?

Maybe. The regulations regarding children bornto one U.S. citizen parent and one non-U.S. citizenparent are more complex. A child born in wedlockon or after November 14, 1986 is a U.S. citizen ifthe U.S. citizen parent can demonstrate five yearsphysical presence in the United States, includingtwo years there after the age of 14. There are other

stipulations for children born out of wedlock to U.S.citizen parent(s).

The rules regarding U.S. citizenshipcan be complicated. So, if someoneyou know has questions about U.S.citizenship eligibility, the best advice isto make an appointment with AmericanCitizen Services to talk to an ofcer (inEnglish or Portuguese).

To make an appointment, goonline to: http://brazil.usembassy.

gov/service.html. You can also [email protected] with anyquestions.

    Happy Thanksgiving!

So You Think You Can Dance, Act Onr Draw?Tips for Performing and Visual Arts Applicants

It used to be that when a teenagertold their parents they were interested instudying something in the arts arena incollege the response was How will youget a job with THAT degree?? Timeshave changed with growing exposureto the arts thanks to TV shows likeThe Voice, So You Think You CanDance?, and amazing Broadway showslike The Book of Mormon. Students

studying ne or performing arts at theuniversity level will gain experienceand training, while being affordedunique networking opportunities andexposure to professionals within theirdesired profession.

Students interested in the arts canpursue a variety of degrees including aBachelor of Arts (BA), a Bachelor ofMusic (BM), or a Bachelor of Fine Arts(BFA). When investigating a collegestudents should check the institutions

status in one of the national accreditingorganizations: National Association ofSchools of Music (NASM), NationalAssociation of Schools of Art andDesign (NASAD), National Associationof Schools of Theatre (NAST), or the

National Association of Schools ofDance (NASD).

In addition to traditional majors, artistically motivated students can

pursue studies in areas such as ArtTherapy, Game Design, LandscapeArchitecture, Arts Education, and

Curatorial Studiesin addition todozens more! In addition, studentscan choose to pursue studies at theconservatory level, a very focusedexperience with highly selectiveadmission criteria. Students applying toconservatories should be prepared forintense competition in the application

    process.One common misperception is that

students interested in the arts need nottake courses outside of their major.

Behzad Dabu, Senior AdmissionsOfcer at Columbia College Chicagofeels its important for students in thearts to be well rounded in their studies.

Many kids think that if they can

take pretty pictures, are funny on stage,or can make colorful art they dont needto understand history, culture, science,or law, says Dabu. Smart artists, who are aware and have knowledge todraw from, create work which is rootedin our culture today.

Chris Andersson, Director ofAdmissions in the Drama Departmentat the Tisch School of the Arts at New

York University agrees, and stressesto his applicants the importance of theacademic piece of the puzzle.

Parents often assume that theacademic requirements are lower fordrama applicants than they are forother NYU applicants. That is not thecase, says Andersson. What they aremissing is that drama students will have

plenty of theater studies and generaleducation classes. History and theoryare as much a part of a BFA program as

is professional training. One key piece of the applicationprocess for visual arts students is theportfolio. Unlike the past, studentsnow have the ability to use online sitessuch as SlideRoom.com to submit their

portfolio pieces. Its important forstudents to remember that the uniquenature of the portfolio is what helps theadmission staff decide a students tinto a particular program.

One portfolio will not t allsubmissions, says Ehren Seeland,

Coordinator of Student Recruitment atEmily Carr University of Art + Designin Vancouver, BC, Canada. Every art, design and media institution will havea very different set of criteriasomeleaning more towards the conceptualside of things, and some with more ofa focus on the technical aspect. Youwill want to make sure to research theschools that you are applying to, andtailor your submission accordingly.

For future Picassos or Warhols, the

National Portfolio Day Association(PortfolioDay.net) hosts free portfolioreviews from September to January eachyear throughout the U.S. and Canada. This is a wonderful opportunity to

have portfolio reviewers from NASADmember schools provide you withfeedback on your work.

Portfolios take time to build, asdoes the research process into yourchosen institutions, says Seeland.Prior to your senior year, takeadvantage of portfolio days, recruitmentevents, summer programs, and anyopportunities that you have to meet

with admissions staff to review yourwork prior to submission.

Many students know from a youngage that they are destined for a careerin the arts, while others nd theircreative side while in high school.Whenever that moment strikes, itsimportant to begin honing these skillsand researching where their path maytake them.

As soon as the thought occursto you to apply to a performing arts

degree program, you should look forways to continue your developmentas an artist, Andersson stresses to

budding actors. Read plays. Seeshows. Get involved with theater inyour community. The more time youspend inside the world of theater, themore comfortable you will be thereand the more condent you will be inyour auditions and interviews for yourdesired degree programs.

Students choosing career elds inthe arts are entering an intense arena

of competition. However, a desire topursue dreams increases their highprobability for success.

Dabu puts it best when he saysEducation is necessarybut passionis what will push you throughout yourcareer!

Amsoc hosted their annual softball championship onOctober 12 at CBBS (Confederation Baseball Brazil andSoftball) sporting complex called CT Yakult, in Ibuina wherethere are 3 beautifully manicured softball elds and 1 majorleague baseball diamond where Brazil hosts their national

championships and where the national team conducts itstraining. Six teams participated with over 80 players in total.Games started at 9:30am with each team playing three gamesto start. The scores of these games determined the seeds forsemi-nals that immediately followed.

After the rst 3 games, the Cougars were in rst placewith 3 wins, followed by Team America and Amsoc tied at2-1, followed by the Bears at 1-2 and two Brazilian teams,SMAB at 1-2 and Cerveceros (beer drinkers in Spanish) at

0-3. Unfortunately SMAB and Cerveceros did not advance, since the Bears took the 4th seed by having the higher netruns. In the semis, Team America, with players from theUS Consulate and Chapel School, came back from 5-1down in the 5th to beat Amsoc 8-5 with a urry of long-

balls in the 6th inning, including 2 towering homeruns. TheCougars also came back from being down 5-1 to beat theBears, also with a urry of homeruns. In fact, the Cougars3-4-5 hitters combined for 11 homeruns in the tournament, which propelled them in the nals to win after 4 innings

by the 10-run mercy rule, thus taking home yet anotherchampionship, their 5th in the last six years, and their 3rd ina row. Two of the Cougar big hitters and their pitcher werevoted Tournament co-MVPs (in picture left).

So Paulo has a number of football relatedactivities for visitors, of which the Museum ofFootball at the Charles Miller Stadium in Pacaembuis the most famous.

However, it has become usual for large andsuccessful football teams around the world to havestadium tours so that fans can experience the past, see the trophies and have a look behind the scenes. I

myself have visited Liverpool FC in England, wherethey have a tour showing memorabilia of their recordnumber of championships.

On Saturday, 5th of October, AMSOC membersmade just such a tour. In So Paulo, the footballteam which takes the name of the city, SPFC, hasinstituted a similar tour that provides a visit to thesuite of the President of the Club; the stadium itself;the history of football in Brazil and in the city of So

Paulo; the trophies won by the club including 22 State,6 National, 3 Continental (Libertadores), and 3 WorldClub Championships; the footballers dressing roomsand the tunnel to reach the pitch; the clubs Press Room;a competition for all to try and score a goal shootingthrough an impossibly small target placed on the goaland of course the opportunity to visit the So Paulostore and book store.

Despite the rather cool weather, and the Clubs ratherlimited ability to provide a commentary in English, the experience was enjoyed by all, including AMSOCmembers animated enough to want to attend a game.

The photos show the group in front of caricatures

of famous So Paulo players, and the boys in the pressroom ponticating about their most recent games!

Just A Few Days To Go To The Annual Angel PartyThe fourteenth annual American

Society Angel Party is just aroundthe corner, on November 9 at ChapelSchool.

Party planning is under control butnancial help would still be appreciatedin several areas:

We still need back-up sponsorsbecause we have new kids arriving asold kids leave. You can help by agreeingto sponsor one of our last children or

being placed on the waiting list to be asuper shopper (lots of shopping in a

short time). You can also contribute R$400 so

we can do the shopping for you.Other donations would be spent

covering the costs of buses for thechildren, the show, extra refreshmentsand prizes for the games.

Please consider helping in this way.To do so, write Sue Banman Sileci [email protected].

We usually have 120-160 volunteerson the day of the party. These spots mayhave been lled but if youre interested

in helping out, by all means contactLauren Negro at [email protected]. And, of course, if youdlike to come to the party to meet thechild you sponsored or see what itsabout, dont hesitate to contact Laurenabout that too. (You cant just show up.Security regulations at Chapel Schoolrequire that we know in advance whois coming. Please let Lauren know.)

Thank you for all your help so farand we look forward to a great partyon November 9.
