SUMMER LAUGHTER July 3 - 9 >> Aero Theatre Comedies guaranteed to re- energize and lift your spirits! From French farce (a Jacques Tati double feature) to silent American classics, and teen comedies from masters John Hughes and Martha Coolidge to the Marx Brothers. We're delighted to welcome direc- tor Martha Coolidge In- Person on July 9 for a dou- ble feature of VALLEY GIRL and REAL GENIUS. Series compiled by Gwen Deglise and Grant Moninger. BLAKE EDWARDS RETROSPECTIVE July 10 - 26 >> Aero Theatre Writer, producer and director, Blake Edwards has provided audiences with classics in nearly every genre. Though known primarily for come- dies such as the PINK PANTHER series, Edwards exhibited mastery of the domestic melodrama (DAYS OF WINE AND ROSES), the thriller (EXPERIMENT IN TERROR) and the musical (DARLING LILI). In the best tradition of studio-era auteurs, Edwards has injected personal ideas and styles into popular forms. All of his films share an inter- est in close relationships and their pitfalls. No director is more finely attuned to the spectrum of emotions that characterize the human expe- rience, and his best films -- films like BREAKFAST AT TIFFANY'S, VICTOR/VICTO- RIA and S.O.B.-- veer from humiliation and anxiety to romance and celebration all within the space of a couple of hours. Celebrate Blake Edwards’ 86th Birthday with a screening of THE GREAT RACE on July 26th! Series compiled by Gwen Deglise and Grant Moninger. ITALIAN GRINDHOUSE: ASSAULT OF THE DEADLY CELLULOID July 11 - 24 >> Egyptian Theatre From the early 1960s through the 1970s, Italy supplied some of the most entertaining genre pictures in the world. Sword-and-sandal, Gothic horror, spaghetti westerns, nunsploitation, spy opuses, giallo thrillers and poliziotteschi (crime) - many found their way into second tier American movie theatres. We've delved into the treasure trove of Italian cinematic exploitation blasts-from-the- past to bring you rarely screened spaghetti westerns THE BIG GUNDOWN and THE MERCENARY, crime films THE VIOLENT PROFESSIONALS, BIG GUNS (French star Alain Delon's sole foray into the Italian genre), THE FAMILY (with Charles Bronson), Tinto Brass' Pop Art giallo DEADLY SWEET and his psychedelic THE HOWL, as well as encores of Dario Argento's 4 FLIES ON GREY VELVET, THE BIRD WITH THE CRYSTAL PLUMAGE and DEEP RED, Umberto Lenzi's ASSAULT WITH A DEADLY WEAPON and ALMOST HUMAN, plus more! (Please note: Many of these are original 35mm prints and, though in reasonably good condition, there has been slight fading of color and wear-and- tear on some. A few are being screened from a digital video source -- see individual film listings. All films are dubbed-in-English, unless otherwise noted.) Series compiled by Chris D. FESTIVAL OF FAMILY MATINEES July 12 - 27 >> Aero Theatre Co-presented by Every Picture Tells A Story Summer has always been the season of joyous escapism for moviego- ers, and this July the American Cinematheque presents a month long series featuring some of the most entertaining family films. GODARD’S 60s July 18 - 23 >> Aero Theatre "Movies should have a beginning, a middle, and an end, but not neces- sarily in that order." - Jean-Luc Godard. Throughout the 1960s, cinephiles eagerly awaited the latest film by Jean-Luc Godard. A found- ing father of the nouvelle vague, the former critic was its most innova- tive, with each new work seemingly rewriting the grammar of film. Jump cuts, asynchronous sound- tracks, self-narration, cinema as essay, cinema as collage, self-referential cinema, cinema of anarchy -- you name it, Godard's '60s oeuvre rede- fined cutting-edge. Through Godard's movies, Jean-Paul Belmondo, Jean Seberg and Anna Karina became New Wave icons, with the dark- eyed Karina doubling as the director's muse through seven quintessential collaborations -- and a four-year marriage. Forty years after the tumultuous events of May '68, and blessed with 100% hindsight, one can almost see the chaos coming through the satire and social criticism in Godard's chronicles of "the children of Marx and Coca-Cola." His eventual ever- more-outré stylistic leaps would leave even art-house audiences behind, but for at least one pivotal decade, Godard was a seminal force in redrawing the map of film. "Godard reinvented cinema. Not since D.W. Griffith was knocking out a weekly two-reeler at the Biograph stu- dio on 14th Street had there been anything equal to it."- J. Hoberman Series compiled by Gwen Deglise, from the Godard's 60s series programmed by Bruce Goldstein for Film Forum, New York. Program notes by Bruce Goldstein and Michael Jeck. ONCE UPON A TIME: SERGIO LEONE July 24 - 27 >> Aero Theatre Italian director Sergio Leone received his first credited director's job on the sword and sandal opus COLOSSUS OF RHODES in 1961. In 1964, inspired by Akira Kurosawa's YOJIMBO and the new spaghetti western craze, Leone helmed A FISTFUL OF DOLLARS, which starred a then, virtually unknown Clint Eastwood. The picture proved a mega-hit in Europe and did well enough in the States to encourage United Artists to release its sequel, FOR A FEW DOLLARS MORE. This paved the way for the majestic con- clusion of the trilogy, THE GOOD, THE BAD AND THE UGLY. These three ultra-vio- lent horse operas revolution- ized the genre and forever cemented Leone's trademark visual style of epic vistas punctuated by claustrophobic close-ups. Leone followed the Eastwood films with his oper- atic masterwork ONCE UPON A TIME IN THE WEST and the tragicomic chronicle of the Mexican revolution, DUCK YOU SUCKER. It wasn't until 1984 that his next effort was released, a magnum opus about Prohibition-era Jewish gangsters in New York, ONCE UPON A TIME IN AMERICA, starring Robert De Niro. Sadly, it turned out to be the maestro's swan song. Sergio Leone died in 1989. Series compiled by Gwen Deglise. ENCHANTED TIKI LUAU BLOWOUT July 25 - 26 >> Egyptian Theatre We're back again with more tiki exotica: fun feature films, diverting oddball shorts, ven- dors, food, music and more! Leone followed theEastwood films with his oper-atic masterwork ONCE UPONA TIME IN THE WEST and

the tragicomic chronicle of theMexican revolution, DUCK YOU SUCKER. It wasn't until 1984 that hisnext effort was released, a magnum opus about Prohibition-era Jewishgangsters in New York, ONCE UPON A TIME IN AMERICA, starringRobert De Niro. Sadly, it turned out to be the maestro's swan song.Sergio Leone died in 1989. Series compiled by Gwen Deglise.
