President’s MessageA perspective to the members from RAW President Kathryn Gleghorn

My term as RAW president is rapidly drawing to a close and I’m writing my final President’s message

using a quote that set the tone for what I had hoped to accomplish as RAW’s president over the last two years. When I agreed to run for club president in 2011, I did so for a number of reasons. I didn’t think there were things that needed to be “fixed” at RAW, so much as I thought there were things that we could do better.

The biggest thing I wanted to change or improve at RAW was the volunteer mindset of our members. It seems like our water duty volunteers come and go in cycles. We have those who are almost always going to be available for water duty (Gary Howsam, Jack Hase and Stacie Sauber to name a few) and then we have the larger group who, for a variety of reasons, are never going to do water duty. I’m in the latter group as I volunteer time to RAW in many other ways. I did do water duty by default last year when we had the rare “no show” water duty volunteer. Last summer, to entice water duty volunteers, we held a monthly raffle for our volunteers. I think this worked well as RAW loves to win free stuff! And in this vein of winning free stuff, we’ve recognized the heart and soul of RAW with an annual Volunteer Appreciation Run and Social. This is an event that is still evolving, but I think it’s one of the best ways to reward our volunteers who step up time and time again.

Several members have questioned the need for the revamped website, but again, we updated not because anything was “wrong” with the current website, but because it needed to be updated with current trends and functionality. We had several members who spent many hours on making our website better. Again, the website is evolving and with the onslaught of social media and club members staying connected via Facebook, we’re still trying to keep the website relevant and one of the places to go to for RAW information.

Another thing this board has taken pride in was our communication. During the past two years, a monthly electronic communication, or e-comm, has arrived in each member’s inbox no later than the first day of the month. This e-comm is a “Members

Only” benefit to keep the members informed of all volunteer opportunities, social and running events and discounts on a monthly basis. We’ve used social media to communicate club happenings, events and need-to-know information on a timely basis. We’ve also cross-posted RAW information on our website’s Forum and on occasion the Trackie’s Yahoo! message board. All of our club’s information is out there at the fingertips of our members. We also did our best to keep the whiteboard in the clubhouse updated with a RAW calendar of events. If a member was uninformed about RAW business, it wasn’t going to be because we didn’t have the information out there.

In addition to the RAW board that served with me over the past two years, I’ve had invaluable support from so many club members. I have no doubt that these people know who they are, but I want to be sure RAW knows these friends and club members were always there, every step of the way, helping me to put my best foot forward. A big THANK YOU to Bruce and Lola Gleghorn, Melissa Capello, Kelly “K2” Richards, Kevin and Lorraine Wessels, Joe and Evelyn Luccioni and Gary Howsam.

As I wrap up my term, I feel this board that I served with did our best to make things better for our running club. I wish the new board the best of luck and continued success as they put their time and talent to work to continue to make RAW the best little running club in the Metroplex!

The RRCA’s 55th Annual National Convention in Albuquerque, New Mexico, was a wonderful success. The high desert mornings were sunny, cool and dry, in other words, wonderful for running. The guest speakers were inspiring, motivational, entertaining and truly heroic. An extra special guest was Chester Nez (92), the last living original Navajo Code Speaker from World War II. The roundtable discussions and education sessions were interesting and informative. The schwag we received was unbelievable – tech shirts, a jacket and more. RAW didn’t receive any honors this year, but Texas still had a winner. Our friends, the San Antonio Roadrunners, won the best race shirt contest.

If you want to spend a weekend with like-minded individuals from across the country learning more

about the sport, hanging out with running celebrities and running an American classic, the Lilac Bloomsday Run 12K as a seeded runner, mark your calendar now. The 2014 RRCA National Convention will be held in Spokane, Washington, May 1st to May 4th, 2014. Convention attendees running Bloomsday will have the privilege of being seeded. A major bonus in a 50,000-person race!

Des Moines, Iowa, was selected as the 2012 RRCA Outstanding Runner Friendly Community® and the host city of the 2015 RRCA National Convention. The 2015 convention will be held in conjunction with the Drake Relays.

Much closer on the horizon are the 8th annual RRCA Run@Work Day® and

2nd Annual RUN@School Day®, nationwide fitness efforts, scheduled on Friday, September 20. Company-based wellness programs, human resources departments, running clubs, running events, running shoe stores, teachers, coaches, parents, and individuals – that’s YOU – nationwide are encouraged to plan fun runs and walks around the country with their employers or at local schools.

Many of us run with our phones these days, whether it’s to listen to music, track our miles or add a sense of security.

Now you can also earn money for a charity, just by doing something you’re already doing. There is a free app called Charity Miles that tracks the miles you walk, run or bike and donates to a charity that you select based on those miles.

Here’s how it works: Search for and install the free app on your smartphone or iPod Touch. Then whenever you are going out for a run, walk or bike ride, select a charity from the menu and hit start. It’s that easy. There are many charities to choose from, such as Wounded Warrior Project, ASPCA, Feeding America and Autism Speaks, just to name a few. The app will track your miles and send you a confirmation email upon completion of your run/walk/bike. If you like, the app will post your accomplishment to your Facebook page to inspire your friends to use the app!

Bikers earn 10¢ a mile and walkers and runners earn 25¢ a mile, up to an initial $1,000,000 sponsorship pool. In six short weeks, I’ve run 137.717 miles and earned $34.43 for my selected charities.

The organization also offers virtual road races! In early May, they did a #BostonStrong 10K with all the proceeds going to The One Fund Boston. Basically, you register as you would for any race ($25 for this one) and you are provided a race shirt and a date by which you need to complete the run. Fun and easy and you don’t have to search for a parking spot on race day.

There’s just one caveat: The app doesn’t track your time or calculate your pace. Likewise it doesn’t tell you anything about the course, such as elevation changes. If those types of data are important to you, this wouldn’t be a good stand-alone app, so use it in conjunction with whatever you currently use. It’s just one more thing to feel good about upon completion of your run!

I started running as a joke in January 2012. Prior to that time, I had been walking or doing a slow jog. My New

Year’s resolution was to convince my cousins to let me run a half marathon with them, although I never intended to run it. They began sending me training plans and I started running.

We decided that we would all run the La Jolla Half Marathon in April 2012, but as the training went on, they felt that I wouldn’t be ready for it. I signed up for the Rock ‘n’ Roll Dallas Half Marathon that March. I finished it in 2:38, huffing and puffing the entire time.

To date I have run five half marathons. As I trained for the first half, and continued running after that, I was certain I would never consider running a full marathon. Then a friend from work posted on Facebook that she was running the Marine Corps Marathon (MCM). I was a little worried about being able to complete a full marathon, so I decided to have a try at a full prior to the MCM. The only race that was coming up was the Big D Texas Marathon in Dallas.

I was constantly rearranging the training schedule due to my crazy work schedule. On the day of my 20-mile run, it was cold and windy. I’m not a fast runner, so it took a very long time. I was going to run my 10-mile course twice, but the conditions were so awful that I was afraid if I ran back near my house I wouldn’t do the second loop. So I ran and ran all over Denton and I finished the run. It was the most satisfying run I had done. Prior to running my first and second half marathons, I was so worried about being able to run the distance. After running the 20 miles, I felt like I could run the full.

I had the normal fears going in to my first full marathon, but I never considered not finishing. I knew it could be hot since the race was in April, but I could do that. I read numerous unfavorable reviews online about this race, but I had no option if I was going to do a full marathon prior to the MCM in October.

I started near the back because it was going to take race day magic for me to finish prior to the 6:30 course limit. I told my co-workers that I would be this year’s final finisher, but that I would finish. As I passed the first mile marker, I felt great! I thought, “I just have to run 6 miles, then 20 more.” Then we passed a second Mile Marker 1, and uh oh, I knew something was wrong. Every mile marker after that didn’t match my RunKeeper GPS app. I knew from that point we would be running more than 26.2 miles.

The run around White Rock Lake was lovely! I had to reach Mile 20 in 5 hours and I knew I would reach the true Mile 20 in time, but not the revised mile marker. The race officials let me keep going. About Mile 20, it was just me and two men. One man was walking and kept saying “We got this. It’s just a Sunday afternoon walk in the park.” The other man was limping on a sore knee. Around Mile 21 I realized there was an ambulance and a police car following us. We were the end of the race.

As we continued, I felt confident I could reach 26.2 in six and a half hours, but knew I couldn’t finish the new course in that time frame. I hit 26.2 in 6 hours and 33 minutes, the exact time of the final finisher last year. For the last three miles everyone kept saying, “You are almost there.” I finally started telling them, “Stop lying to me!”

By Mile 24, I was walking more than running. It was hot. At the second-to-last water station a little boy ran to greet me. I asked him if I was going to finish and he said, “Yes Ma’am, you are!” He was so cute! About Mile 26.6 I was back in Fair Park dragging my sweaty, dehydrated self towards the finish and my husband came out onto the course to greet me. He walked the last mile with me and we both received finisher’s mugs.

I was the 2013 final finisher at the Big D Texas Marathon and couldn’t have been more proud of myself. As it turns out, the marathon had taken the runners on the wrong course at the start, hence the extra mileage. We completed 27.6 miles that day.

Running a marathon is the most amazing thing. The training is hard, but it is such a great challenge. I am signed up for the 2013 Marine Corps Marathon and can’t wait to start training again. Many thanks to my Running Cousins, Kathie and Laurie. Without them I would never know the joy and pain of running. My advice to anyone is that if you are physically able – you must do this!

Motivation. The definition is giving a reason to act: the act of giving

soamebody a reason or incentive to do something.

My motivation was a life changing car accident in July 2012. I choose the words “life changing” because it has proven to be a blessing in disguise. From July through December, I was in a deep depression, though most people probably never knew by looking at me.

By mid-December, I was sadly at the heaviest and unhealthiest I have ever been. On a whim, I joined 24 Hour Fitness in Southlake. I half-heartedly attempted to go to the gym after work and cleaned up a few bad eating habits just in time for Christmas.

My boss is RAW member, Belynda Warner, and a runner. She had given me a little insight into her weight loss journey. She encouraged me to participate in RAW’s Bold in the Cold 5K in January. I started to think, what if I participated in one 5K per month for an entire year, as a way to hold myself accountable to my fitness goal? Almost half way through 2013 and I will be running my June 5K on Saturday, June 29th at the Peace, Love, Run 5K in Richardson. I am so excited to share my journey.

Bold In the Cold 5K - Grapevine - 01/12/13: The morning was balmy and unusually warm for the time of year. Longtime friend Chris Keil offered to join me as a support system. I gladly accepted. Chris and I hung back and let the serious guys go for it. I won’t recount all the excruciating details, but it was tough. There were more hills and twists and turns than I cared for, but my only goal was to finish. And I did so in 51:07. My goal was under one hour, so that was step one.

Hot Chocolate 5K - Dallas - 02/09/13: Waking up before six a.m. to go run in the cold? Not my typical way to spend a Saturday morning. This race had something crazy like tens of thousands of participants. We had to rush to the

start line just to stand and wait twenty minutes until it was our turn to go. I had just had a physical a couple weeks prior and had learned I had high blood pressure. As I expected, the girls left me in the dust. Then I got super emotional around mile three. I started thinking about how lucky I was to be here, to be running, and so very proud of myself for these baby steps. I slashed my personal best by finishing in 46:26.

Dash Down Greenville - Dallas - 03/16/13: My best guy friend, Chris Garey, had eagerly decided to join me for this awesome St. Patty’s Day extravaganza! Chris Keil also joined us. Once we started, I was already feeling exhausted from a crazy workout two days before. I tried keeping up, but ended up doing my own thing. I was looking for mile markers and didn’t see any until we’d just hit three miles. I booked it to the finish, barely beating my personal best in 45:14.

Champagne 5K - Little Elm - 03/30/13: Horrible and then some. I found this race on Living Social for $15. It rained the night before the race. Because the course was on a natural trail, the rain turned this into a mud run. I was so mad – I had just broken in my new $140 running shoes. I finished in 50:13.

Run For Rescue 5K - Colleyville - 04/13/13: We had a big group to join in for this race. I ran with girls from work, some RAW chicks, and a group of Chris Keil’s friends. I felt stronger and thought I had really pushed myself only to come up ten seconds short of a new personal record. I finished in 45:28.

Trinity Trek 5K – Fort Worth – 05/11/13: The weather was gorgeous, truly a perfect morning for running at the Panther Island Pavilion. Chris Keil and I felt strong starting out. After a while, we saw runners going two different directions. What else do you do but follow the crowd? For the first time in five races, I was actually pushing a little ahead of Chris.

Suddenly, a race official came by and told us we were going the wrong way. Instant defeat and panic swept over me. After being redirected back to the course, I finished stronger than I ever have and found out my time was 38:14. Then I learned I placed second in my 25-29 age division.

Since I began this lifestyle change, I moved to Grapevine and joined RAW, which has really stepped up my training. I am more focused, driven and determined. I keep getting a lot of inquiries as to what I’m doing and how I’m staying successful. I try to work out six days a week, alternating between outdoor running and the gym. I do yoga and joined WeightWatchers®. I’ve lost about 15 pounds, I eat balanced, healthy meals and that blood pressure? Way down, baby. So buckle up because we’ve still got seven more 5Ks to go. For 2013 that is.

Sometimes a project has a way of taking on a life of its own and the RAW storage shed rebuilding project was a perfect example of a

project that just kept getting bigger and bigger… and better. RAW’s clubhouse director Kyle Keifer planned to spend a couple of hours on a Saturday morning replacing the rotting wood that stores RAW’s tables and other race supplies. Along with Kyle, frequent RAW volunteer, Jack Hase, helped coordinate the project and assist with the design, purchase materials and supply many of the tools used.

So what does it take to “rebuild” the shed? When all was said and done, at least a dozen RAW members had a hand in clearing out and tearing down the shed. This was also a great opportunity to dispose of long forgotten items that were no longer needed.

Everyone knows the key to organization is having a place for everything and having everything in its place. RAW’s shed rebuilding project gave the shed some pretty handy sign storage and a new door, roof and window, practically building a new shed from the ground up. A BIG RAW Thank You to RAW’s Shed Rebuilding Team: Jeff Barnhart, Jeff Garber, Ray Harris, Jack Hase, Diane Hernandez, Gary Howsam, Kyle Keifer, Brad Liles, Ken MacInnes and Chris Morris. Thank You to Kathryn Gleghorn, Kelly Richards and Anne Barnwell for leading the effort to sort through the contents of the shed. Another BIG RAW Thank You to Ed Folliard who primed and painted the shed.

Trailblazer Brad Liles has given back to the sport in a way that will serve RAW members and Lake Grapevine’s Horseshoe Trail users for years to

come. Working alone in the early spring, Brad created a nearly mile-long trail in the woods directly behind the clubhouse. Because the wooded area is within the Army Corps of Engineers’ land, he had to seek approval from the City of Grapevine and the Corps.

Once Brad was ready for the completion of the trail, he called on RAW volunteers to assist with cutting down brush, limbs and general trail clean up to create a clearer path for the trail. If you’ve spent any time at RAW, you know RAW loves nicknames and RAW has affectionately dubbed this new trail, “The BLT,” as in the Brad Liles Trail. The BLT connects the clubhouse to the rest of the trail system that runs alongside the Horseshoe Trails. Trail users can start at the BLT and get in a full workout almost exclusively off-road. Are you from around here or did you decide to bring your talents to DFW?I am originally from Wisconsin. We ended up in Texas for my husband’s schooling 11 years ago.

What’s the history of your running “habit” – when did you start? How did you progress? My entire life I have hated running. The most I had ever done was one mile - and I almost barfed after running that far. I moved, was working longer hours, and no longer had time to attend the classes at the gym, so I put on a few extra pounds. One morning last April, when I was about to put on a pair of my favorite dress pants, I looked down and noticed I had blown out the entire lining in the butt of my pants due to my increased weight. I then realized why I had periodically heard little ripping sounds when taking my pants up and down. Well, I realized then and there that I needed to do something to slim down.

A friend of mine had told me that she was doing a “couch to 10K” app on her phone and I thought I would give it a shot. My whole goal was to be able to run in the 5K at my son’s school the following year. The program was an hour workout three times a week that very, very gradually built up running stamina with interval training. I liked that it was like a class. The program told you when to start and stop your running intervals, walk, cool down, etc. That I could do. It got really difficult towards the end when the intervals were no longer intervals, but solid running time, but my friend kept encouraging me, telling me that if she could do it, I could do it. So I did.

I was REALLY glad when I finished it, never really intending to do a 10K. It never dawned on me to just run LONGER than one hour to do the total mileage. I thought I never ever made it even close to the mileage in the time allowed, so I would never be able to do it. Then I started running outside, intending to do a 5K at a reunion with a friend. I had never used the incline on the treadmill, where I had done my training so far. I had to start over on my couch to 10K to try to figure out running outside. I did my 5K and then Eileen Pontaoe invited me to run with her and her running

club. I did eight miles that day, signed up for the Dallas Rock ‘n’ Roll Half Marathon and have run many races since then.

By the way, I got those pants re-lined and now they are loose!

When did you join RAW? I joined RAW in the fall of 2012 after running with Eileen several times.

What does running do for you now?I still can’t believe that I can run a half marathon! I have never been an athlete, so it freaks me out that I am able to do this. It is definitely proof that ANYONE can do it! And I love running with the group. It is my “me” time and so nice to chat with the RAW ladies to make those miles pass by faster. I swear running three miles on the treadmill feels the same as running eight or ten with the group.

What’s your favorite place to run – local? Anywhere?Anyplace but the treadmill! I still do the treadmill a couple of days every week before work because running outside at 5 AM creeps me out. The route we did on the Dallas Rock ‘n’ Roll Half Marathon was my favorite course so far. I have enjoyed running around White Rock Lake as well.

What day in your running career would you like to live over again? It must be the way I felt after I finished the Dallas half marathon because I keep signing up to do more half marathons.

Assuming you have a life outside the club, tell us about it.Sadly, it is mostly work and wrangling my two boys. My RAW time is my free time.

What’s your favorite sport/physical activity outside of running?I love cycle class.
