There seems to be a lot of con icting information out there
regarding sun exposure and sunscreens. Want to get outside
and enjoy the sun this summer without worrying? So do we!
Here are some smart sun tips from the Environmental Working
Group to help you do just that.
Smart Tips
Protect Your Skin from the Inside Out
Tomatoes: these are a major source of an antioxidant called lycopene,
which has been proven to provide long-term protection against
UV-radiation-induced e ects
Watermelon: The lycopene can help keep you from burning
Carrots: a recent study showed that the antioxidant in carrots, beta carotene,
both protected and repaired cells from photoaging
Dark coloured vegetables: the darker the colour, the more the antioxidants,
which help reverse free-radical damage in the body
Kiwi: the high vitamin C helps kill o free radicals caused by exposure to sunlight
For added sun protection, indulge in some of these sun- ghting superfoods. The more colourful your diet, the better.
• Avoid spray sunscreens, or hold
your breath while applying to avoid
inhalation risks.
• Say no to oxybenzone. While it’s
found in over 40% of sunscreens and
face creams with SPF, it’s a chemical
that acts like estrogen in the body
and poses some serious health risks.
• Also avoid retinyl palmitate, a form
of vitamin A that is bene cial in night
creams, but on sun-exposed skin
could speed up the development of
skin tumours and lesions.
• Buy all-natural sunscreen to avoid all of
the chemicals, or better yet, make your
own using one of the DIY recipes online.
• Practise safe sun by getting outside
for 10 minutes at a time, without
any sunscreen, to allow your body
to make the amazing and disease-
 ghting Vitamin D.
