Happy New Year to you all.

Christmas is over again for another year and I hope Santa brought you

everything you wanted, especially all the archery kit you needed. He

didn’t? Never mind, you’ve been saving all you pocket money for that

haven’t you?

Neal has some winter outdoor sessions planned so we can all work off

that seasonal food and keep our long distance shooting up to scratch

for the forthcoming summer season. The outdoor season seems a long

way off particularly during this cold spell, but every year we find that

April seems to suddenly appear and we’ve all forgotten our sight marks

with the ensuing mad panic to be ready for the first 70m competition in

mid April.

Steve Fenton is also planning the some club rounds, a 3D fun shoot in

March and following the success of the last year’s club championships,

hopes to run the event again in September.

However, before all that, there are still a few indoor tournaments left

and Martin needs your scores for the Andy Harris and Portsmouth

league matches.

Lastly, we must congratulate Alex Body for winning silver medal at the

Junior National Indoor Championships in December, but even better

than that, won his class and claimed a National Record at the Essex

County Field Championships in October. Well done Alex and keep up the

good work.

Mayflower Christmas Fun Shoot

Didn’t ‘Santa’ Steve do well for the Christmas Fun Shoot? With fun targets, a few seasonal 3D

targets making a simple competition, food supplied by generous club members and mulled wine

supplied by Rob forty members seemed to have a very enjoyable time. A sprinkling of snow set

the scene, but fortunately the blizzard waited until the prize giving had finished.

Thank you to all members who donated all the festive food and those who joined the spirit of the

occasion by wearing seasonal attire. Special thanks must go to Santa Steve Fenton and all his

helpers for once again organising this annual event.

Tournament Round up

Essex & Open FITA Field Championships, 3rd October

This was the last in the County Championship series and is always a good event. It is open for archers of

any ability and even if you don’t do well, it is a walk in the woods shooting arrows and making new friends

with the same interest. A pleasant way to spend a day.

Once again Mayflower juniors did very well for themselves with County and National records broken and

arrowhead awards claimed.

Sophie Brown Lady u15 compound unlimited 1 Essex 1 Open

Joe Franklin Gent u18 compound unlimited 1 Essex 2 Open

David Fall Gent u18 compound unlimited 2 Essex 3 Open

Mark Robinson Gent u18 compound unlimited 3 Essex 4 Open

Sam Yeates Gent u18 freestyle 2 Essex 3 Open

Alan Vale Gent u15 freestyle 1 Essex 1 Open

James Howell Gent u15 freestyle 2 Essex 2 Open

Alex Body Gent u12 freestyle 1 Essex 1 Open and claimed a National Record

Luke Wiseman from Chelmsford Tudor Rose also claimed a National Record as gent u15 compound.

Who was going to write a few notes for me to add here?

Racketts Portsmouth, 24th October

Always a popular event in the area, but not well supported by Mayflower members this time. Perhaps it

was because the Mayflower fun shoot was on. Those that did enter showed a good account of themselves.

Well done Sam Yeates, Alex Body and Alan Vale with a Silver medal for Joe Franklin.

Mayflower FITA18, 31st October

A very popular event and probably the first of the local Record Status tourna-

ments of the season. Also popular with junior members from around the county.

Well done to Sam Yeates and Alex Body with a gold medal for Joe Franklin and

silver medal for Sophie Brown while Daisy Clarke decided it was her turn to claim

a National Record.

Clophill AC FITA18, Ampthill, Beds, 11th December

Joe Franklin decided to venture afar for this very popular World Record Status event and managed to

come home with a bronze medal.

Racketts Worcester, 12th December

This Worcester round always fill up early, probably because of it’s unusual target

faces, scoring and the fun element where fancy dress is encouraged. However, it was

not very popular with Mayflower this time.

As Joe had entered this event as well he found himself hot footing it back from

Bedfordshire. Who was doing all the driving? Still, at least it was worthwhile having

claimed a county record for the double Worcester round. Well done Joe.

Alan Vale was the only other member who entered so well done to him as well.

Tournament Round up, continued

Junior National Indoor Championships, Telford, 4th December

This type of event was a first for the National Championships. In the past, the junior champs were held

over two days in December and the senior champs over two days in February. This year, the size of the

International centre at Telford had the space for around 50 bosses thus accommodating all the juniors

on Saturday with a senior back to back tournament, all senior championships on Sunday and all the trade

stands as well. A real archery festival.

Sadly, because of the snowfall earlier in the week, a lot of participants felt that they could not make the

journey to Telford and Mayflower had their share of ‘no shows’.

Despite the weather, Mayflower and Essex had some good results.

Alex Body Jun Gent u 12 Recurve Sliver medal

Sophie Brown Jun Lady u16 Compound 5th

Joe Franklin Jun Gent u18 Compound 7th

Meanwhile other Essex juniors were also doing well.

Daisy Clark Chelmsford Jun Lady u16 Compound Gold medal and National Champion

George Whitley Chelmsford Jun Gents u18 longbow Silver medal

Sebastian Stedman Ascham Jun Gents u14 recurve Silver medal

Luke Wiseman Chelmsford Jun Gent u14 compound Silver medal

Louise Devlin Oakfield Jun Lady u14 recurve Silver medal

Rebecca Wilson Abbey Bowman Jun Lady u18 recurve Bronze medal

Also Daisy Clark and Edward Kearse, Colchester were members of the winning England team in the Home

Nations tournament.

And then, Daisy Clark, Sophie Cole, CTR, and Sophie Brown stayed overnight for the senior competition.

The seniors shoot a FITA 18 followed by a head to head round so a quick change of sight marks and off

they went. Daisy qualified 6th, Sophie Cole qualified 23rd while Sophie Brown just missed the cut (first

32) for the head to head rounds. Unfortunately Sophie Cole went out in the 1/8th eliminations, while

Daisy beat Elayne Mclean 7-3 and Christie Westman 6-4 to lose 6-2 to Lucy Holderness who eventually

won the tournament. No shame there. All did pretty well considering their ages against some very com-

petitive senior archers.

For the first time in many years I didn’t go to either tournament. Shame, I seem to have missed a good

set of competitions.

Mayflower 3D Fun Shoot, 24th October

We did it again! Despite our favourite ‘Dell’ area being full of water, we found space for

14 foam rubber animal replicas around the field and ‘round the back’ despite the dis-

ruption of the occasional dumper truck unloading close to the course.

Around 40 members seemed to thoroughly enjoy themselves. No pressure, no prizes

and just a bit of fun.

One by one, thanks to the entry fees and contributions from the club, we are replacing

our menagerie. Let’s just hope they don’t

fight amongst themselves between shoots.

The next shoot is expected to be in March.

Look out for details.

Frostbite league

Last, but not least, Lesley reports that we won both Recurve and compound matches in November. Junior

scores were Recurve; Sam Yeates, James Howell and Alex Body. Compound; Joe Franklin, Sophie Brown.

December we won the compound and drew on score for recurve but lost out on the number of golds.

Junior scores were Recurve, Sam Yeates; Compound; Mark Robinson and David Fall.

The Frostbite league is held on the same day as Junior outdoor sessions and assembly is at 12.30.

Records update

Wow, some of you seem to have been busy gaining records, improving handicaps and supporting the league

matches. Alex Body has submitted 2 JMB scores so just needs one more. Excellent in his first year with

Mayflower.

Recent County Records ratified were:

Joe Franklin: Metric 1 Worcester (maximum score of 300!)

Sophie Brown: Short Western

Sam Yeates: Single and Double Metric Clout

Mark Robinson: Single and Double Metric Clout

Recent County Record claims not yet ratified:

Joe Franklin: Portsmouth Triple spot Double Portsmouth Double Worcester

Martin has also supplied an excerpt from the outdoor handicap table for active juniors.

For Compound:

Surname Forename Sex Handicap Class Age

Franklin Joseph M 21 JB 17

Brown Sophie F 26 JB 14

Robinson Mark M 44 1st 16

Vidgeon-Hart Eleanor F 46 JB 15

And Recurve:

Surname Forename Sex Handicap Class Age

Yeates Samuel M 37 JB 16

Howell James M 38 JB 14

Gourley Aaron M 48 1st 15

Jones Lewis M 49 U 16

Gridley James M 53 JB 11

Johnston Nicholas M 65 U 13 Classification explanation: JB = Junior Bowman; JMB = Junior Master Bowman; 1st = 1st Class; U = Unclassified

Andy Harris league

And then Martin reports that scores from Sam Yeates, James Howell, Lewis Jones and Aaron Gourley,

has meant that we’ve won 2 matches and lost one in division 2 of the Andy Harris indoor league. Sounds

good to me so keep up the good work except that Martin needs more scores for the rest of the season.

Portsmouth league

Official tables aren’t available, but indications are that Mayflower have won one match and lost one

match in division 10. Many thanks to Sophie Brown and Joe Franklin for their scores.

Archery GB Progress Awards

Mayflower have now subscribed to this award scheme for juniors. It is designed to provide beginners and

younger archers with awards for developing their archery skills and the scheme can also be used as an

adult beginner incentive.

Badges will be awarded by target face colours, white, black, blue, red and gold according to scores.

Scores that need to be attained vary according to age, sex, bowstyle and distance shot. They are more

applicable to an outdoor range, but as we are shooting outdoors regularly now there will be opportunities

to start during the winter months.

See David Scorah for full details of scores and how to get them.

Archer of the Year Awards

In addition to all the awards offered by GNAS Junior Committee, they have decided make a special

award called “Archer of the Year”. Below is an extract from the website explaining it all.

“The Junior Committee thought it would be nice to award a Special Award to the Archer of the year. It

will be presented annually at the Junior Indoor Championships, to those of you who have supported the

indoor and outdoor Junior Championships, and also participated in the July National and November Chal-

lenge postal competitions. The winners will be decided on their results by the committee.”

By way of a starter, Mayflower run the postal tournaments ‘July Nationals’ and ‘November Challenge’ so

all you have to do to be eligible for this award is to enter the Junior National Outdoor Championships and

the Junior National Indoor Championships. Both are well worth entering and I’ve had a great time in the

past supporting junior members.

Mayflower Distance Awards

These are designed for the new archer to measure their own progress in the early stages. When a given

score is attained at a given distance, it is understood that you are competent enough to progress to the

next distance. Coloured badges are awarded according to the distance shot and all you need to do is

shoot 36 arrows and attain a score of 200 with no misses. The awards are:

Black—20 yards; White—30 yards; Blue—40 yards; Red—50 yards; Gold—60 yards; Green—80 yards.

There is no fee, no judge or supervisor. Just set the stand with a 122 cm face at your chosen distance,

starting at 20 yards anytime you like, record your three scores on separate score sheets, keep them and

claim your badge from David Scorah.

Easy isn’t it?

Not Puzzle Corner

Who is Santa?

FITA Feather and Arrow Awards

Mayflower also run this scheme for all members and is a measure of the basic

skills of archery rather than outright proficiency. So you don’t have to be good at

it, just know a bit about it. The awards are based on three (3) attainments.

Performance, Skill and Knowledge & Know How.
