Recently, sitting on the porch at the rectory I saw an interesting thing. A baby bird had fallen out of the nest, and it’s wings were not fully developed. I thought that it would starve or be killed by a cat. Then, a few days later I saw it again up on the porch railing, apparently trying to fly. Then, mama bird came by and brought him a worm to eat. Several days later I saw them again and this time she showed him where to find food and made him get his own worm! She watched over him, chasing another bird away, all the time encouraging him to fly. Two things came to mind: First, we often worry about our children, especially if they leave the nest before they are ready. Like the mother bird, we go to look for them and maybe help them out with food or money. We begin to realize that they need to learn to take care of themselves, so we keep watch from a distance and protect them from harm. Secondly, I saw in this incident the way God watches over us. He allows us to make mistakes and even comes to us with spiritual food. Then, as we see that we need his love and protection, we listen more closely to what he is telling us. The psalmist says that the Lord watches over us like an eagle over its babies, until he pushes us out of the nest at the proper time. Finally, always under his watchful care, we soar on the wings of eagles as the prophet Isaiah says: He gives power to the faint, and strengthens the powerless. Even youths will faint and be weary, and the young will fall exhausted; but those who wait for the Lord shall renew their strength, they shall mount up with wings like eagles, they shall run and not be weary, they shall walk and not faint. Model contestant, Leah Darrow, will be speaking in our

diocese this summer! Leah is a highly renowned speaker, regularly appearing at conferences and events all over the world. She will be giving her testimony, “From Top Model to Role Model,” in which she shares her story of being an unsuspecting girl who meets Jesus in the most unlikely of places. She challenges her audience to have courage to embrace real love (chastity) and conversion.

Leah will be speaking on Tuesday, July 26 at 7 PM at St. Patrick Catholic Church in Laurie MO. All are welcome! This free event is for anyone, men and women, from junior high through adulthood. Don’t miss out on this wonderful opportunity!

Did you know the Knights of Columbus has clown clubs throughout Missouri? The Knights of Columbus Missouri State Clown Club is looking for new members (young and old) to help spread God’s love and joy through clown ministry. Don’t worry about makeup, costumes, or skills. Veteran clowns will help you with all those details and you will learn how simple, easy, and inexpensive clowning can be. Families are welcome to join – and you don’t have to be a member of the Knights of Columbus or a Catholic to join. By performing simple acts of kindness and by sharing your already existing talents – you can help show God’s love to others – all while clowning around! Contact Steve Meystrik at [email protected] or 1-573-353-8652; or Ron Stuppy at [email protected] or 1-573-883-6762 if you are interested or have any questions.
