Cassel Boykin hosts another Dr. Shelton’sTotally Awesome Fishing Adventure

By Jodie Warner, Staff Writer

Dr. Shelton’s Totally Awesome Fishing Adventure kicked o Saturday April 30 with

137 teams o anglers who normally are ghting or top positions on the weekend;

however in this tournament it’s all about the cause.

The tournament raises money or Memorial Health Systems in Lukin to help cancer patients

pay or transportation and medications, along with any other needs they may have.

With the 137 teams paying a $200 entry ee each, the event earned at least $27,000 that will go

toward patient care and expenses as envisioned and began by Dr. Bill Shelton 18 years ago.

Shelton, a radiation oncologist at the Arthur Temple Sr. Regional Cancer Center saw a need or

some kind o event that would help raise money or the patients o the center when he ound out

that one o his patients would have to stop on the side o the road to collect cans to be recycledin order to pay or the cost o transportation to and rom the center or treatments. Shelton then

began this tournament out o compassion and understanding o his patients, and now the legacy

lives on and continues to help those that need it.

The day started o with some much needed rain or the area, which presented a nuisance to

anglers trying to sh in the middle o the lake, the rain also brought high winds to add an extra

obstacle that the teams would have to work around throughout the rest o the day.

During the beginnings o the weigh in, the hopes o seeing big sh were squandering; however

eventually they poured in with 30 minutes or less to spare. A llen Moore and Clint Teutsch eventu-

ally brought in a stringer at 20.88 lbs. taking the spot or rst and a check or $3,249.

Patrick and Shane Gammill missed the rst place position by .01 ounces coming in with 20.87

lbs. and bringing home a check or $2,294.10.Ray Livingston and Bill Rogers, no strangers to team competition, came in third with a 19.91 lb

stringer which earned them a check or $1,720 or their day on the water.

A tie or ourth and th occurred with 18.57 lbs. The tie was settled by the weight o the largest

bass. Eddy Gresham and Carlton Johns eventually took the ourth spot due to their 6.57 lb bass that

Gresham weighed in, this earned them $1,274.50. The th spot and $1,019.60 was then given to

Steven and David Morton who also had 18.57 lbs.

The big bass competition remained close throughout the day with bass coming in one ater the

other only a ew or less ounces apart. Ronny Mundy set the bar with a 6.56 lb bass during his weigh

in, Eddy Gresham then came in with a bass that topped him by a small margin at 6.57 lbs. Beore

the crowd could settle, Glenn Harrington weighed in a bass at 6.59 lbs. Then, just in the nick o time

Reservoir Stratifcation,

 Thermoclines, and Turnover

Todd Driscoll, Texas Parks and Wildlife Department

Most anglers have likely heard the words “thermocline” and “turnover” associated with local shing reports

and dock talk at the local tackle shop. Both result rom thermal stratication, which is an annual occurrence

at a majority o southern reservoirs. As part o the stratication process, reservoirs develop pronounced

temperature barriers (thermoclines) and anoxic zones (water without oxygen) in the summer and “turnover”

or mix during the all. Many bait sh and sport sh relate to the thermocline during summer, as it contains the

coldest water with adequate oxygen levels. Anglers can put more sh in the boat by better understanding the

predictable process o stratication.

Thermal stratication is a direct response to the unique relationship o water density and temperature. The

maximum density o water occurs at 39OF. As water cools below this temperature, it becomes lighter. As a result,

even though ice is the solid orm o water, it foats because it is less dense. However, in this part o the country,

water temperatures in our reservoirs seldom all below 45OF, so to simpliy, water becomes less dense as it

warms. This is an important point relative to the rest o the discussion o thermal stratication.

During the spring season, the rst several eet o water begin to warm. Due to the density relationship

described above, this warm water layer foats, as it is less dense than the cooler water below. However, at this

time this thin surace layer o warm water is subject to mixing rom wind and wave action. As spring progresses

into summer, the surace waters begin to warm aster and this warm water layer expands into deeper water. As

this process continues to accelerate into June, the reservoir becomes stratied into three layers: 1) the upper

layer o warm, less dense water o similar temperature, 2) the thermocline (small middle layer where the

temperature cools dramatically between the upper and lower layers), and 3) the lower layer o colder, more

dense water below the thermocline (usually has no oxygen). At Sam Rayburn and Toledo Bend reservoirs, the

thermocline will typically begin to orm at a water depth o 25 eet and increase in depth to approximately 0

eet at mid-summer.

Once thermal stratication develops, the top layer does not mix with the lower layer due to the strong water

density/temperature barrier at the thermocline. Due to the lack o mixing, the lower layer becomes anoxic (hasno oxygen) within three to our weeks ater stratication. A positive indication o summer stratication is the

smell o rotten eggs at the powerhouse o Sam Rayburn and Toledo Bend during water releases. This odor is

hydrogen sulde, which primarily persists during anoxic conditions present in the lower layer.

Usually, anglers can nd the thermocline with their electronics, as the density o water abruptly increases

at this layer. It may take manual increases o sonar sensitivity settings, but the thermocline will show up as

a straight line o increased clutter, similar to a scattered school o baitsh. Although baitsh and gamesh

can suspend in relation to the thermocline, oxygen levels in productive lakes like Sam Rayburn and Toledo

Bend oten prevent this. During mid-summer when the thermocline may be in 0 eet o water, oxygen levels

typically all to stressul levels below depths o 25 eet. This reduction in oxygen is caused by the bacterial decay

o nutrients and organic matter in the water. In this mid-summer situation, baitsh will typically suspend at

the lowest depth o adequate oxygen instead o the thermocline (typically 20 - 30 eet at Sam Rayburn andToledo Bend). Sport sh, especially black bass and crappie, will relate to these bait sh throughout the summer.

Finding structure and cover at 20 - 30 eet will maximize catch rates when shing deep during summer.

As the all season approaches, water temperatures at the surace begin to cool and due to increasing density,

the cooler water sinks. Wave action assists with distributing the cooler water throughout the upper layer.

When the upper layer temperature is equal to or lower than that o the thermocline, the entire water column

is subject to mixing. The mixing process, reerred to as all turnover, can be relatively sudden, with an entire

reservoir turning over in less than a week during windy conditions. Typically, this occurs in October at Sam

Rayburn and Toledo Bend. Although rare, isolated sh kills can be observed during turnover, due to the well-

oxygenated water in the upper layer mixing with the poor water quality o the lower layer, which causes pockets

o anoxic water. Fishing can also be tough or a ew days during turnover due to the sudden change in water

quality.

I you have questions concerning the sheries o our area lakes, stop by the Inland Fisheries oce at the

Jasper State Fish Hatchery or contact us by phone ( 09-38 -9572) or email ([email protected]).

Good luck and good shing!

There were a lot o strong sacks brought to the scales at Bass N Bucks on Toledo Bend April

30, 2011. David Fox and Anthony Clemens topped the pack, leaving their competition in thedust with 29.37 lbs!

The morning started out windy at Cypress Bend Marina, and showed little relie throughout

the day. Aside rom the wind, conditions were prime and the sh were biting.Several teams came up to the scales with sacks nudging the 20 pound mark. David Fox and

Anthony Clemens hit it rst, with nearly 30 pounds! Their 8.45 lb kicker only held top spot orBig Bass or a short time, challenged by other 8 pounders but beat when Johnny Watkins and

Bart Blakelock brought their creel to be tallied that included a 9.68 lb kicker, the biggest bass

o the tournament. For David Fox & Anthony Clemens, their morning started out at a dead run. “We targeted

ditches with grass in 6’-8’ o water. Anthony was throwing a watermelon red Carolina riggedfuke, and on his second cast caught our big one.” By 7:30, they had a nice 18 lb limit in theboat. Throwing both the fukes and a ¾ oz shad pattern spinnerbait, they were able to cull

three times, adding another 10 pounds to t heir total beore 11:30. “We kept catching sh aterthat, but pretty much had our weight by then. At 2:30 the bite just quit and we packed up andcame in.” Bass N Bucks presented them with the guaranteed $8,000 1st place check. They were

also running in a qualied Ranger boat and received the $2,500 Ranger Cup bonus. Havinga Yamaha SHO outboard on their Ranger boat, they also won the Yamaha SHO bonus givingthem a ree entry into any Bass N Bucks event, worth $280. They would like to thank Jasper

Outboard, Jeans Tackle and Cepolk Corp or t heir support. The morning bite went very well or Johnny Watkins and Bart Blakelock too. Fishing the

mid lake area at a shallow grass fat that varied rom 2’ to 5’ deep, they used spooks and buzz

baits or their catch. Johnny latched on to their 9.68 lb kicker on a spook. Just imagine that bigbass hitting his topwater bait! “We caught a lot o sh today, and had 22 pounds in the boat by 9am. We were able to make one cull around 10:00, and that was it or us. We were done. It was

a un day, and ortunately we didn’t miss any. On our way in, we had some technical diculties

nd worked on trying to get the boat going or about 5 minutes. Some ellow anglers stoppedto help, and went so ar as to swap cranking batteries with us. I it weren’t or them, we may

not have made it back in time.” The team won $4,000 or their 2nd place nish, and another$1,000 or Big Bass. Bart credits his partner saying “I really want to thank Johnny or landingur big one! We would both also like to thank the Lord or getting us back sae and looking

ver us.” They would also like to acknowledge their sponsors: Bass Kandi, Stanley, Nitro, Mer-

Allen and Freeman win with 14.09 lbs at V&M/Cyclone Baits

The V&M Cyclone Baits tournament was held on Sunday, May 1 at Cypress Bend Park in Many,

Louisiana. The 41 active teams aced high humidity, heat and varying heavy winds in the aternoon, but

made it through. The competition was getting erce!

nly ounces separated the rst three places but Harold Allen and Glen Freeman took home the top

prize with 14.09 lbs. Rusty Hatcher and Chance Moton came in second with 13.53 lbs.

elvin Cartwright and Tommy Land came in third and also took home the big bass title with a 13.29

lb stringer which included a beauty that weighed 5.39 lbs. Fourth place team was Bobby Feazel and Gary

Glende with a 12.83 lb stringer. Jacob Harrison and Trace James rounded out the top ve with a 9.67 lb

total stringer weight.

The next V&M Cyclone Baits Team Tournament will be held on May 15 at Twin Dikes Marina. Atregistration every participating team receives at least $50 in ree baits, a chance to win the $1000 grand

prize on tournament day, and with the use o their weigh slip they can receive money toward the purchase

o a vehicle at Weaver Brothers in Jasper or Kirbyville. Participation in the tournament trail also earns

Sobczak and Garrie Win It All  at Bass-N-Bucks Finale

By Jim Binns/ Lakecaster Correspondent

WOW! The hotter the weather gets – the hotter the shing is on Sam Rayburn Lake.

Bass-N-Bucks held its last t ournament o the Rayburn Series on May 7th and except or somepesky winds the weather was starting to eel like summer. It was a beautiul morning as theanglers headed out o the launching area to search or a big sack o bass and one o the teams

ound the pot o gold. The Umphrey Pavilion was a beehive o activity as the rst fight o anglers made their way

to the weigh-in scales. The weather had turned windy and hot with bright skies, but Randy Turner and his partner Jerry McMullen weighed in a nice 16.73 pound bag o sh to start the

reworks. But that was soon beat by weights that gradually climbed up into the 20+ pound

mark. At one point Big Bass o the Tournament was a tie between two 5.30 pounders, but thisis Sam Rayburn, and you knew that with the caliber o anglers shing t his tournament, bigger

bass were bound to hit t he scales. Derek and Dave Mong knocked the 5-pounders out with an8.08 pounder, and at this point you could almost hear t he drum roll because the highlight o the event was getting ready to happen.

Jonathan Garrie and Casey Sobczak struggled to place their big bag o bass on the scalesand when the smoke cleared the scales read 30.09 pounds (they had a ½-pound penalty or adead bass so t hat made the total 29.59 pounds). To make it even better, their “kicker” bass was

a whopping 10.11 pound lunker. Think about it or a minute. For a ve bass limit that wouldbasically mean that you have our 5-pounders in t he livewell and then add a kicker weighingover 10-pounds. Unbelievable!

Garrie and Sobczak are class act young men and certainly no strangers to the winners circle.Sobczak is rom the Spring area and Garrie resides in Nacogdoches. The team pocketed a cool$8000 or the win, $1000 or Big Bass o the Tournament and also won the coveted title o Bass-

N-Bucks Anglers o the Year. The team had an all day bite and they shed a number o spotsin the mid-lake to south area. They used a variety o baits, but stated t hat the majority o theirbass were taken on shallow and deep diving 6th Sense crankbaits in a shad pattern. The duo

shed the shallow baits in 1- to 3-eet o water and the deep divers at about a 15– to 20 oot

epth. Grass and structure were denitely a actor in their success. During the day they culledbout three times.

econd place and $4000 went to the team o Tommy Hill and Bubba Frazier with ve bass

that went 22.65 pounds. They also had an all day bite and culled about six sh. This team

shed south and didn’t need to carry a lot o shing tackle since they only shed one bait in

shallow water - a yellow Rat-L-Trap. Grass also was a actor on where they caught their sh.During the day one o their rod and reels got tangled up in the net, and when they tried to net abass the rod and reel combo was sacriced to the sh gods o Sam Rayburn. I tried to get a GPS

o where it went into the water but the team was t ight-lipped.Third place and $3000 went to the team o Marc Mitchell and Mike Dorcz with 22.30 pounds.

They also had an all day bite and caught about ty bass during the day. Notice I said 50 bass.

They used white and white/chartreuse spinnerbaits and buzz baits or most o the action andshed the baits in rom 1-to 3-eet o water. Here again, grass was a actor in the area they  were shing. At 2:30pm the batteries in their boat went dead and with a livewell ull o bassthings were looking pretty bleak. Fortunately they were able to get a helping hand rom some

other shermen and make it to weigh-in on time. The team stated that there were some really anxious moments beore that motor started.

So what about the 10.11-pound Big Bass o the Tournament caught by the team o Garrie

and Sobczak? Well that big ol’ bass was taken o a long point on one o the 6th Sense proto-type deep diving crankbaits in a Texas Shad pattern. The sh jumped a number o times and Ican only imagine how exciting that must have been because it was taken on 10-pound test line.

My hands would still be shaking.

Got it! 6/6 – A Family Plan

The boys in the boat are Audie Lucas & Rickey Lucas, then L-R in ront o the boat are Kristen Boone,

Sheridan Lucas, Memaw Maezelle Bird, PawPaw Glenn Bird, Brandon Boone, and Emily Boon

Making goals and then working to achieve them is important or everyone, including – and maybe especially

– or kids. When it is made into a amily un lled event, it just keeps getting better.

Back in December our grandson Brandon was shing with me below the Lake Livingston dam and caught a

atsh. Ater checking the Texas river water body records I realized that it qualied as a junior water body record,

o we recorded it. When the certicate came in the mail it caught the eyes o the other grandkids (being that 7

year old Brandon was prancing around showing it o in ront o them and bragging o what a great sherman

that he was).

Now the other 5 grandkids wanted to know when I could take each one o them to catch their own record sh.

Well, that presented a real challenge or PawPaw, and not being a one sided person, sat back and wondered how I

m going to get each one o the grandkids to catch a water body recordable sh. But the best part is that all o ourrandkids want to go shing with me, and man, this is great. I have had a lot o pleasure spending quality time

with each one o them on the water in the boat, and going rom place to place shing or dierent types o sh.

We have grandkids rom 4 thru 15 years o age and I do realize that by some people’s standards, some o the

sh they caught are not enormous in size, but when you watch a small child ght with all they have to get (the

sh) to the net, it was a big sh to them.

As we got going on this adventure, and had several kids with records, it came to me that it just might really

be possible to get all o our grandkids to catch a junior water body record recorded by the Texas Parks & Wildlie

Dept. Well, the certicate or the last one came in the mail, and we now can say that each and every one o our

grandchildren has caught and recorded a record sh with PawPaw and Memaw. I just really don’t know how

shing could get any better than this, and that we are living a blessed lie.”

Fox and Clemens Take 1st Place at Bass-N-Bucks on Toledo Bend

Even though the lake is eight eet low and the weather was VERY windy, Toledo Bend once again

howed why she is one o the premier bass lakes in the country. A number o bags o sh weighing

18-plus pounds were brought to the Cypress Bend Park weigh-in site as Bass-N-Bucks completed its next

to last event in the Toledo Series. Toledo Bend has 186,000 acres o water and many shing patterns can

be eective, but on this day David Fox and his partner Anthony Clemens used a shallow water strategy to

best the eld with a 24.26 pound bag o “chunks”.

It seems like the wind has been blowing or months and this weekend was certainly no exception.

A sti breeze in the 12+ mph range greeted anglers at starting time and then got progressively worse

throughout the day. I was on the water and I can assure you that the wind sure made it tough i you

wanted to make a run out on the open water. At weigh-in time it looked like it was going to be another Toledo Bend shoot-out. Hety sacks o bass

tarted showing up and despite the windy conditions the bass were on a good eed. Martin Elshout and

his partner Mark Price were the rst team to break the 20-pound mark with a limit o bass that weighed

20.10 pounds. This was ollowed by a number o 18 and 19+ pound sacks but the crowd knew that some-

ne would bring an exceptional bag o sh to the scales. The team o David Fox and Anthony Clemens

claimed that honor by weighing 24.26 pounds to take the win and the guaranteed $8,000 1st place check.

This always consistent team was also shing in a qualied Ranger boat so they took the $2500 Ranger

up bonus. It gets better – the team also had a Yamaha SHO outboard on their Ranger boat so they re-

ceived the Yamaha VMAX SHO Bonus Free Entry worth $280, and also the Cabela’s bonus or $250. WOW!

Tournament morning or the Fox and Clemens team started o with an early bite that included a ne

.61 pounder. There was a lull in shing during mid-morning and then the sh turned on again or thenglers about 12:30pm. “We were throwing topwater Spooks and Stanley Ribbits or the majority o our

sh,” stated Fox. “Grass was denitely a actor and we worked the baits in rom 1-to 8 eet o water in

mid-lake locations.” Clemens added, “We really made the trolling motor work today because the wind

was denitely an issue in the areas we shed.” The team is sponsored by Ranger, Jasper Outboard, Berkley,

epolk Corporation and Jeane Tackle.

(The names Fox and Clemens may sound amiliar to you since they also won the April Bass-N-Bucks

event on TB with a sack o bass that weighed 29.37 pounds with an 8.45 pound kicker. In that event

Bass-N-Bucks presented them with the $8,000 1st place check, the $2,500 Ranger Cup bonus and the

Yamaha SHO bonus. What a couple o great months these two anglers have had!)

Scooter Clark and Ryan Pinkston took 2nd place and won $4000 with a ne sack o sh that weighed

21.47 pounds. “We caught a 9-pounder in practice but with the windy conditions we were never able to sh

that spot,” oered Clark. “Today we had about 18 pounds in the livewell by 8am so we were eeling pretty

good. Most all o our sh were taken on Texas rigged plastic worms(redbug color) shed near 10 to 12 oot drops. We were shing airly

light sinkers on the worms”. Clark and Pinkston also caught a ew

sh on ½-ounce Jewel jig with the jig and trailer being a black/amber

color. Grass was not a actor in catching sh and their bite was best

in early morning and mid-aternoon. The team would like to thank

their sponsor Home Town Marine located in Center, Texas.

Third place and $3000 went to the team o Martin Elshout and

Mark Price with a bag o bass that weighed 20.10 pounds. The team

had pre-shed a couple o days and caught lots o bass in practice.

They had an all-day bite and targeted mid-lake areas that had

grass and stumps. “We caught our sh on a variety o baits”, statedElshout. “We used a Kevin VanDam - KVD 1.5 square bill crankbait

along the edges o the grassline and then alternated between pitch-

ing a Justice jig and a Sweet Beaver when working the shallow grass.

The jig was green with a green Speed Craw trailer and the Sweet

Beaver was a green pumpkin color”. The team would like to thank

their sponsors Mercury, Kistler Rods, Ranger and Ludwig Brothers

Marine in Farmerville, Louisiana.

Ricky Hill and partner Boogie Edgerly weighed in an 8.31 pound

lunker to take big bass o the event and $1000. The team shed mid-

ake areas and it was a tough day or the duo. They had caught somedinks” but at noon their livewell was empty. Things can change

ast when shing Toledo Bend as they soon ound out. A watermelon

red “wacky” worm shed in about eight eet o water yielded the big

bass and you can bet that their day went rom being pretty dismal to

really good as soon as that big ol’ bass was saely in the livewell.

Th Th f B Fh Th Th f B Fh elecTRonics: When To TRusT Them

and When noT To y Andrew Upshaw, Tri Lakes Tackle

Many tournament anglers have at least once in there livesrun in o the lake using their electronics i.e. their GPS/

Depthnder. I, like many others, have done it on numerous

occasions. Even the people with a lot o experience in doing

this have a tendency to orget little key eatures in running

there old trails on there GPS.

First o I want to talk about trails that were made when the

lake was high. Normally, circumstances would allow you to run

these trails without ear o colliding with stumps or sand bars,

but that’s not the case right now. People are continually hitting

stumps and sand bars because their old trails were made when

the lake was 6 oot higher. I sure wish I would have inormed

people sooner about this, especially visitors rom out o town, because o the danger in tearing up equipment. Many people,

even the ones experienced on Rayburn and Toledo, need to

remember that some trails are not good or running when

the 2 lakes are as low as they are. You not only put yoursel

t risk but also your passenger, and other times, sherman in

your general location. I you have a Navionics chip, the best

thing I can advise you to do is not to run in the dark blue, and

sometimes even the light blue areas on your map, as these

locations are either out o the water or only have inches to a

oot o water on them. This only helps you or sand bars, but

not necessarily stumps.

I actually had an experience the other day on Toledo Bend

on a boat lane that I always run. I ran into the area on the

lane, and never let o the gas until I got into the spot. On the

way out I idled because I had a phone call, and I hit 9 stumps

on the way out o this little area, most o them were rightunder the water. I was extremely ortunate to not tear up any

o my equipment or to hit any o the stumps while running.

This is just an example o an actual boat lane with a lot o

stumps in it. With water levels being extremely low even some

o the more experienced guys still orget basic steps. No one is

perect at boating, but i you pay attention and idle in areas

beore you run them you may save yoursel a lot o headache

and heartache. Nothing like trying to run out o your avorite

shing hole with 20 pounds o bass in your live well and hit a

stump and wreck your day.

here are signs to look or in the water especially i yousee stumps in the water already. Something I recommend is

nd one o your local pros and ask them i there is anywhere

specic or you to be cautious o. These guys know the lake

better than me and would tell you what lanes are accessible

or you to run and the ones to steer clear o. O course your

electronics show you areas where stumps and fats are

abundant so just be cautious when you maneuver through

them. These 2 lakes right now can be very dangerous to run

so just be careul, pay attention to the surroundings, and talk

to locals that are on the lakes 24/7 and this might prevent

you having an accident. I you have any urther questionsthat I might be able to help you with please let me know at

[email protected] or call (936) 637-7119 which

is Tri Lakes Tackle and ask or either Ron or Larry and they

should be able to help you as well. Good Luck, but most o all

please be sae.

*NOTE: Any o the shing guides on the shing reports

pages would be happy to talk to you about up to date lake

inormation.

What’s happening inthe world o wildlie?

By Robert Baker, TPWD

Things are constantly changing in the world o wildlie and

wildlie management. The only way to stay on top o things is

to constantly learn and ask questions. Texas Parks and Wildlie

Department (TPWD) has assembled a group o experts that will

provide an excellent opportunity to gain knowledge about this

ubject.

TPWD is presenting a ree wildlie workshop on 18 June 2011 at

the dining hall at Martin Dies Jr. State Park. The workshop will start

at 10am and run until 3pm.

The program has experts rom many elds that are going to

talk about a wide variety o topics relating to wildlie management.

Wildlie diseases commonly seen by hunters will be covered by a

qualied speaker that has not conrmed yet. Hatchery Manger Reese

Sparrow will be providing an update o what is happening with the

new Jasper sh hatchery. Gary Calkins, Wildlie District 6 leader or

TPWD, will provide inormation based on white-tailed deer breeding

studies. Sean Willis, wildlie biologist with TPWD, will be presenting

inormation on predator hunting and control. A talk on mountain

lions in Texas will be given by Bill Adams (Pineywoods Ecosystem

Project leader with TPWD). Last but denitely not least will be Jason

Hardin (turkey program director or TPWD) providing inormation

on prescribed re cooperatives and a new burn trailer available or

use by the public.

Lunch, hamburgers and all o the xings, will be served at nocharge to all those that register beore the day o the workshop, and or

those that show up at the site the day o will be served as supplies last.

People with herbicide applicators licenses should pay close

attention as 1.5 CEUs will be oered. This could make all the

dierence i a person is a little behind or keeping up their

certication.

The program is open to any one that wants to attend and learn

about wildlie management. Call the Texas Parks and Wildlie

Department’s District 6 Wildlie Oce at (409) 384-6894 during

normal business hours (8am-12pm & 1pm-5pm) Monday through

Friday to register or get more inormation.

 Reel Um N Guide Service,www.rayburncountry.com

June 2011 has arrived and the lakehas been low since last summer. Thetop water bite should have kicked o and should be a lot o un or everyone.Early morning and late aternoon throw baits like the Stanley Ribbit rogs overthe grass and lily pads then wait or agreat big bass to blow up and try to takeit. It takes some skill to let the sh havethe bait ‘till you eel some weight on theline beore you set the hook. It will surebump up the old ticker when you get intoa mess o them. Some other baits thatcan help kick-start the bites are the buzzbait, Zara Spook and the Pop-R. Whenthe morning bite slows down it’s time to

move out and start working the deeperedges o the grass and structure. Baitsthat come to mind are the Carolina rig,Texas rig and a jig and they are great! Asthe grass grows and starts to matt over, the grass jig comes into play. Punchinga heavy Stanley grass jig thru it can be alot o work but when you get a bite it isusually a pretty good sh. There are not

going to be a lot o bites doing this sodon’t miss any o them. This is what tolook or as the summer heats up.

The crappie shing will start tostabilize into the summer time patternsover structures. These little critters aresome o the best eating that I can think o.Grabbing a group o riends and gettingout on the water can be so much un oreveryone. For the ones that don’t have aboat, we can help you out. We’ve got a20 oot Pontoon boat that can handle upto 8 anglers and put you on some necrappie. Those that need some shade“we’ve got ya’ covered”. There is also achanging room with a potty. It’s a great

way to get away rom the stress and havesome un. Take mom and pop or the kidsshing today. I’ll try my best to spoil youand let you really enjoy yoursel.

Bass Strike Tackle has been addingonto the store and have added Authorized Mercury Marine Dealershipand Weldcrat boats to the business. Thisis still in the works but something we

needed in the area.I want to thank my sponsors and

many riends that have helped makethis a great year. Stanley Jigs, AmericanRodsmiths, E2 Bait Company andBassCat. Terry and Connie at JacksonHill Park and Marina, Jerry and Glendaat Bass Strike Tackle, Knupps CornerStore and Larry at Tri lake Tackle.

Well, every month this year has comein like a lion with the wind blowingthe leaves o the trees and taking the

very much needed rain north o where we need it. I’ve been here a long time

and I have never seen the wind blow like this! I want to caution everyoneto be extremely careul when on thelake. The water is dangerously low and there are things out there that willbreak your stu. As ar as the shinggoes, the sh are here all you have todo, is go try. There are not a lot o bigsh being caught but there are a largenumber o sh being caught.

I you come out here and look around you’ll see some changes. The

new country club is really takingshape and the new gol course is doinggreat. It’s my understanding thatsoon they will start to build some spechomes and this place will come alive

with olks. Things are going strong atthe Tiger Creek Lodge you all come outand see us. We have some big plans orthe Umphrey Pavilion as soon as allthe permits and paper work alls into

place.Now Let’s Fish !! It’s getting to be

Ribbit time or what ever rog youpreer, cranks baits, swim jigs, swimbaits, all o these are all doing well.

What’s hard to believe, is the bass are very shallow, it’s hard to understand why. The water temperature is movingup so it won’t be long until they will godeep to their summer pattern.

The crappie are on the brush anddoing pretty well. Minnows, Stanley

Wedge Tails, Big Bite jigs are what Iuse. Blue, white and chartreuse andpink are all good colors.

It won’t be long until the bream will be somewhere and biting. It’s hard

to say where they will be in this low  water.

Please everyone be careul on the  water, enjoy the shing and stop by and see our merchants around the

lake and remember i we can help justcall.

Need a new shing spot? Texas Parks and Wild-

lie is working hard or you. Maybe you don’t know

where to sh Sam Rayburn – maybe you do and a

new spot would be great to add to your arsenal.

TP&W has begun an ongoing project to create

and provide areas with brush piles to attract sh

and increase angler success. “We placed the sh

attractors to increase angler catch (primarily

crappie). We have olks that call and want to sh

Rayburn, but have no idea where to go. Now we can

direct them to these publically available locations/

GPS coordinates. To maximize use o the sh at-

tractors, we place them in areas that will be out o

the wind most o the time” – Todd Driscoll, TP&W

Inland Fisheries Biologist.

So ar three brush pile sh attractors have been

put out, but more will be added and the locations

will be made public or everyone to enjoy. They are

all comprised o Virginia Pine Christmas trees.

I you have a GPS, you can easily nd the brush

piles using these coordinates:

Or you can utilize the map provided. They are

all located on the southern end o the lake. The rst

is on the southern secondary point in Five Fingers.

The second is around the point just to the east o

Rayburn Park. The nal one is just east o that in

a protected cove on the main point between the

branches o the cove.

Good luck – good shing – get out there and

catch some!

We had 6 people that shed with us on a very windy day. Lamar Johns won rst place with his

bag that weighed 9.70 lbs. Sam Loton won big bass honors with his 3.43 pounder.

We hope to see everyone next month at our June 18th tournament at the Sam Rayburn Public

boat ramp on hwy 255.

Everyone is welcome to come join us, any questions please call Bernie Shifet at 936-897-9061.

y Get Reel Bass Club

We had 11 teams composed o 21 members

and 1 guest to sh the May tournament. O the

22 teams, 4 teams weighed in double-digit sacks,

and everybody weighed in sh! That’s a pretty

good day... 63 bass weighed in with a total weight

o 126.47 lbs. which was a 2 pound average.

James Carlton and Ron Coats teamed up to

bring in rst prize honors, with 15.20 lbs. James

contributed to almost hal that weight with one

sh alone, a lunker that weighed 7.08 lbs. and

netted him the 1st Big Bass payout spot! The

team o Cli Callender and David Burke pulled

together a second place stringer weighing 14.30

lbs. with a perect 4.00 pounder o that being

David’s 2nd Big Bass o the tournament sh. We

need to keep an eye on ole’ Burke, by the way...

i I’m crunching the numbers right, David has a12.10 lb. weight-per-tournament-shed average

right now, higher than anyone else in the club!

He’s moved steadily up the ranks to where he’s

about a quarter pound out o the #1 “Angler o the

Year” spot; there better be some strong showings

next tournament to keep him out o it! Good job!

Continuing on, third place is held with 11.39

lbs. by Garry Osborn and Bryan Lohr. They each

had a solid 3 lb. sh in their sack. The husband

and wie team o Huey and Barbara Martin made

their usual strong showing to capture ourth

place with 10.85 lbs.

James Carlton won Big Bass honors

with this nice 7.08 pounder.

Many Bass ClubBobby Munlin won the Many Bass Club’s

May 2011 tournament with a fve fsh limit

weighing 16.06 lbs. Fishing out o Alpine

Marina in the Palo Gaucho area o Toledo Bend

Reservoir, Munlin caught his fsh on a shallow

running crank bait in 6 to 8 eet o water. Jim

Campbell fnished in second place with a fve

fsh limit weighing 12.02 lbs and Tim Oxley

was the third place winner with a fve fsh limitweighing 11.89 lbs. Big Bass honors went to

Mike Price with a 4.97 lb. lunker.

There were 63 fsh caught weighing a total o

142 lbs or an average fsh weight o 2.30 lbs.

“Lake Advisory due to excessive wind”

has been a common occurrence this year.

While some will arguably agree that wind

improves bass fshing nobody will questionthe increased dangers wind oers the angler

fshing Toledo Bend Reservoir. Please be sae,

do not challenge your boating skills or the

limits o your boat. High waves combined with

a low lake level can only spell danger.

HUNCHBACKThe Hunchback is an exciting new “wake bait” that runs about ½” under

the surface, depending on retrieval speed, producing a wake behind the

lure as it wiggles back and forth. The patented shape produces a trulyunique action, like a baitfsh lost from its school. This lure is perfect for

the pro or beginning angler that wants to get an action similar to a “walk

the dog” lure without jerking the rod tip. Simply retrieve the lure slowly

and the Hunchback does the rest. Features a loud rattle and Owner wide

gap hooks. Available in 2 sizes.

Wow, how low can it go?

O course, I’m talking about

the lake level. Looks like it’s

going to continue to all

unless we get a substantialamount o rain and that’s

not usually the case during the summer.

Most tournaments are allowing boaters to trailer because

o the low lake conditions. The low water level makes or some

great shing; just make sure you know the areas you can run,

i not, just slow down. Check with the locals and most will be

happy to share their knowledge o the area; where you can run

and where you can’t.

Summer has arrived. The days are getting longer, the water

temperature is rising and the bass have moved into their

typical summer patterns. We’ll be throwing almost everything

in our tackle box and working numerous areas and depths

rom main and secondary points, humps and ridges, creek

and river channel ledges, and areas that have vegetation.

Early in the morning and late in the evening we’ll start o throwing top water plugs, buzz baits, rogs, spinner baits, jerk

baits, shallow diving and lipless crank baits, and a ull array o

plastics in grass fats close to deep water.

When the sun gets over-head and the shallow bite slows,

concentrate shing deeper water along the points and bends

in the creek and river channel ledges that have the most cover

and structure (tops, lay-downs, etc) with deep diving crank

baits and Carolina or Texas rigged sot plastics. Keep a top

water bait and a shallow running crank bait like a rattle trap

handy or the schooling bass.

The White bass will be all over the lake ollowing the shad.

Work the river channel sandbars with a slab spoon or tail

spinner. Watch or schooling activity along the river channel,

boat roads, fats, main lake points and at the mouth o the

coves. Traps and shallow diving crank baits work great. Alsokeep an eye open or the gulls eeding on bait sh. Usually the

Whites have pushed the baitsh to the surace and the gulls

can be a good key to locating the Whites and Blacks.

The Crappie will be holding around brush tops in 15 to 25

oot o water. Concentrate at the mouth o the creeks close to

the river channel. Use your electronics to locate the brush tops

and bait- sh and you should locate the Crappie.

FISHING REPORTS/

BASS: Hello,  Anglers! A requentquestion...”What bait/ pattern to use to catcha “money sh”? While

numerous baits have the potential o getting “BigBertha” to bite, here are our easy to use suggestionsor the average sherman. The rst is a spinnerbait andmy choice or current conditions is a 3/8 oz. Stanley  Vibrashat with double willow lea blades with a whiteor shad colored skirt. In June I love to throw this at rstlight on a windy point. Another is a Texas or Carolina

rigged 10 inch Berkley Power Worm in green pumpkin, watermelon candy and on bright/sunny days use plumand redbug. My methods or the 10 inch Power Wormare to sh them Texas/weightless over shallow grass (2 -8’) or to rig them Texas or Carolina rigs in depths o 8 to25 eet with my best action coming rom 15 to 22’.

The third is a plastic rog with my avorite being

Stanley ‘s Ribbit with #1 color.....pumpkin pearl. Theseare really catching bass right now. I sh the Ribbit on 50lb. test Spider Braided line over visible grass on humps, ridges and points. I also like Stanley ‘s Double-Take roghooks in 4/0 and 5/0 sizes. For the huge Bull Ribbit, Iuse the 6/0 size. I always dye the eet o Ribbits with achartreuse sot plastic dye pen made by Zoom.

The ourth and nal bait is Bill Norman’s deep-divingcrank bait, the DD22. I work these on the outside edgeo grass humps and ridges as well as points with grass.Experiment with retrieves using both ast and slow/withpauses until you see what they want. I run the DD22 on10 and 12 lb. test Berkley 100% clear Fluorocarbon or

Big Game clear or low-vis green. For deep cranking I use Abu Garcia’s Revo Toro Winch reel which takes so much work out o crankingthese big lures with it’s 4:6 to 1 gear ratio. I have TheRevo Winch mounted on an 8’ All Star medium actioncranking rod. With 12 lb. Fluorocarbon and this rod/ reel I can throw the DD22 a country mile which is very

important to getting the lure down to where the sh areholding.

CRAPPIE AND BREAM: Crappie are mostly beingcaught in brush and under bridges near creeks andchannels rom 15 to 30 eet with 28-22 eet the targetdepths. Live shiners are the gold standard but someare being caught on Road Runners (Blakemore Lures)and tube jigs. Bream are winding up the spawn andremaining beds are ound in 2 to 4 eet on steeper banksdue to low water levels. They are starting to move deeperon bends o creeks and the river rom 10 to 20 eet. Livecrickets and worms are excellent as are Berkley ‘s PowerMaggots.

I listened as the two anglers who were paired or the tournament claimed to be “on sh”. One angler’s

pattern was to sh crankbaits by the dam while the other angler was fipping brush “way up lake.” Issues like

this are usually decided by fipping a coin and the winner get to sh his water. But that usually leaves one

angler in the boat as a “grumpy” partner instead o a cooperative partner.

This scenario is played out many times during the year and it all boils down to the “your sh or mine”

issue. But savvy anglers know that it’s best to work a strategy rather than to have a showdown. I can assure

you that winning one o these bass tournaments is built around teamwork, not rivalry within the boat.In my opinion fipping a coin to decide where to sh should be the absolute last resort. Smart anglers

should sit down together beore the tournament and discuss a plan that can maximize the strategy and skills

o both shermen. Key items that should be discussed are:

• Where, how many and what size bass are being caught

• How well have you done in practice (or past tournaments) with this pattern

• How deep are the sh

• How will weather changes affect the pattern

• What time of day does the pattern work best

• Is the area getting lots of shing pressure from other tournament anglers?

• And perhaps most important – Is there a backup plan in case the pattern fails

As you discuss the strategy, both anglers need to be completely honest with each other and don’t exaggerate. There is nothing to win by telling your partner that all o your bass were tournament “keepers” i they were

really “dinks”.

Once all o this is discussed it is commitment time. I it is a two day tournament you have a ew more

options, but or a one day event all o your eggs will be in one basket so be sure your plan is satisactory to

both anglers. Never let your ego play a big part in the decision making process because big egos can oten

contribute to an empty weigh-in bag.

A really good situation can exist i both anglers have been shing the same general area because now it’s

just a matter o incorporating both shing techniques during the day.

So what happens i problems arise and the two anglers just can’t agree on a strategy? Well now it’s time

to nd out how good you are at “negotiating”. Give your partner valid reasons why you think your pattern is

better than his. I you still can’t convince

him and no middle ground can be met - then my advice would be to just go along with his suggestion to

avoid urther argument. I you get all “huy” then your shing will suer and your day on the lake will be

ull o tension and bad vibes. That is something neither o you need.

Let’s assume that you have agreed to a win/win solution. Now it’s time to be sure that other items are ready

or tournament day. Sharpen those hooks, re-spool new line, x that reel that seems to malunction at the

wrong time, and be sure the batteries in the boat are charged and ready to go. Nothing is more disheartening

than to lose valuable shing time because o simple problems that could have easily been avoided. (And also

make sure you know who is bringing the drinks and eats)

On tournament morning all dierences should be put aside and both anglers should unction as a team.

Remember, you are out there to catch bass or a team weight, not to beat your partner. While on the water you need

to work together, share inormation and unction as the best team on the lake. And while all o this is going on you

need to keep in mind that even though money may be on the line the real emphasis should be on having un.

Sunday, May 22 the Bud Light Sam Rayburn Premier Team

tournament trail held its ourth o ve 2011 events at the Um-

phrey Family Pavilion. McCall & Boulware stole the show winning

1st place, also landing the Big Bass o the event.

The day started out with warm weather and plenty o humidity

which stayed consistent throughout the day. Deric Shott and Bob

Utterback weighed in the rst big stringer earlier in the game with

17.74 lbs. Not trailing too ar behind them were Todd Driscoll and

John Lynch to steal the lead with 18.59 lbs; but, just beore the end

o the weigh in Chris McCall and Clayton Boulware brought in a

20.40 lbs sack to win the whole tournament, including a 6.22 lbbig bass.

Shott and Utterback said they shed, “grass beds with worms

and jigs and culled throughout the day.” In the end Shott and

Utterback landed in third place.

Todd Driscoll and John Lynch hauled their bag in not too long

ater Shott and Utterback to take the lead with 18.59 lbs and a

5.87 lb big bass. Driscoll and Lynch say, “we were shing shallow

grassy drains…moved around to several dierent areas through-

out the day.” They also say they shed with, “Skinny Dipper (by

Reaction Innovations), swim bait and culled throughout the

day…we caught at least 15-20 keepers so it was a really un day o shing.” Driscoll and Lynch are sponsored by Lowrance, Phoenix

Boats, niceboats.com, Reaction Innovation, St. Croix Rods, Wave

Away, Izor Line, and Falcon Lures.

Driscoll and Lynch held the lead or both the overall title and

big bass title or most o the day until Chris McCall and Clayton

Boulware weighed in with a whopping 20.40 lbs and a 6.22 lb big

bass, which stole the entire

how. McCall says, “we were

shing wooded areas, grassy

reas, and lily pads with San-

tone swim jigs (Toledo perch

nd white shadow colors)

 with a Gambler easy swimmer

n the back.” He also said,

 we culled throughout the

ay and caught the big one

nd another one pretty early.”nce again the wind was

throwing some pretty strong

usts, which the tourna-

ment directors say may have

eterred anglers over the past

ew weekends that would nor-

mally sh their tournaments

 very weekend. At the same

time, the annual McDonald’s

Big Bass Splash was going

n at Toledo Bend. 16 teamsompeted in the tournament on Sunday.

The next event will be the Sam Rayburn Big Bass Tournament

n June 4-5 at Cassels Boykin and the next and last tourna-

ment in the series will be June 26th at the Umphrey Family

Pavilion on Lake Sam Rayburn. For more inormation click to

ShRINKING FIShING hOLeS an FAST BASS ACTION

Hello, Anglers. With Toledo ‘s lake level at press-time

163.7’ and summer on the horizon things have been

interesting and are getting “very interesting”. By the

time this is published, the level more than likely will be

close to 163.3’ given the rate o all the past two weeks.

Outside o a tropical storm, and we surely don’t need

that, I really cannot see any relie rom our water-

starved lakes until November/December which is 6-7months away. Obviously, I spend a lot o time on the

water and have been on the lake many days with these

low levels. Let me throw some stats out there......In 2006

I shed regularly all the way down to the “Bottom”

which was 162.088’ which is basically only a oot and

a hal less than where we are now. The “Bottom” was

reached in September 2006.

Now hold onto your water bottle: In June 2006,

Toledo’s level was 167.21’ while today (June 2011) it

is 3.9’ lower than in 2006 when the lake recorded the

lowest level ever (as ar as my research can veriy). I the lake continues to all at the rate it has the past 2

weeks (.35’ every 2 weeks) we could be near 162’ by

July 4th weekend. I nothing changes by Labor Day......

Whoa! Well, let’s just say that everyone will be able

to do dock and pier repair and boat launches will be

extended again all over the lake.

The requent question I get is “why is the lake so

low?” I think the main reason is obviously the drought

conditions all over this area which seems to be in no

hurry to change patterns. The other natural actor is

the evaporation actor which many people do not take

into consideration and it is signicant. This actor is

greatly increased in the summer months and is 3-5inches a month depending on conditions and when

you gure 3-4 summer months o daytime temps in the

90s you have a oot o water loss just to evaporation.

The other actor is generating which or the past

several weeks has been one unit running approxi-

mately 6 to 8 hrs a week normally a couple o hours

Mon/Wed/Fri aternoons. Why generate at all with the

lake level so low? The Sabine River Authority says that

they are required to release a minimal amount o water

in river below dam to maintain the integrity o the river

as well as or industry usage down stream. Another question I have been receiving has to do

with the oil/gas boom on the northern end o the lake

where drill rigs are running pipes rom the lake or use

in their drill operations. I do not have any inormation

as to the amount o water being used but I do know

permits are required or such usage and would assume

those are in place. Property owners must get a permit

to water lawns/gardens rom the lake. According to

reports, there are several pipes (some estimated 10

inches) that are pulling water rom the lake. In normal

times there would be noone concerned with such but

with the circumstances like they are, property owners,

anglers and boaters are looking careully at why theirlake is so low. I we get more inormation on the water

usage we will update next issue.

I I could describe the shing so ar this year in one

word, it would be... “OUTSTANDING”. Currently, post

spawn patterns are in place and sh are moving into

summer patterns. Check out our South Toledo Report

in this issue or much more detail and patterns and

methods. With the lake down to almost record levels it

goes without saying to use extreme caution.

I have ound when the lake goes below 164 it is a game

changer. Be sae...God Bless and good shing. AUTHOR INFO: Joe Joslin is a syndicated outdoor

Wade Gerald o Kilgore Texas caught this huge 41.2 lb catsh on Toledo Bend. The sh was caught and weighed out o Six Mile Marina.

Carson Downey caught a Redear Sunsh that weighed 0.8 lbs

Cord Michael Copley is a six-year-old boy who loves to sh. In the recent Sam Rayburn McDonald’s tournament he not

only caught the largest catsh in his division, but his 3.16 lb channel cat is the new Sam Rayburn lake record or Jr. Anglers.

1

Now, beore you go thinking that Cord is a fuke deal and was just lucky, understand that he has been seriously ater those

catsh ever since he was three years old. The

pictures show him running trot lines at three years old and also with a very nice cat he caught on rod and reel with his dad when he was only our. The other picture o him and his grandather was taken o him when he was ve. He caught all eight o these catsh with rod and reel on his own. By the way he puts the bait on and does all his own casting.

2

On the morning o the McDonald’s tournament Cord was shing standing on the bank behind his grandathers house

on Sam Rayburn lake. At rst the shing was a little slow as Cord caught some small catsh and

a couple o turtles. Then Cord got the big bite and he set the hook. The ght was on as Cord and the big catsh struggled against each other. The big catsh wanted to head to deeper water but Cord was not going to let him have any o that. Finally Cord got the catsh coming towards the bank and his uncle netted him. High ves were or everyone as Cord said he wanted to go weigh the sh in the tournament.

It’s ocial! The 25th Anniversary or the Toledo Bend McDonald’s Big Bass Splash is now

H-I-S-T-O-R-Y as CEO Bob Sealy would say. This three day tournament is or amateur anglers only,

giving them a chance to win big money just like the pro’s. One bite – one hookset – one bass is all it

takes to win an event like this, and it is a game where size denitely matters. In the end, the last 30

minutes that the scales were open it was an 11.60 lb catch that won the tournament.

Over the years, thanks to all o the participants, donations to the Ronald McDonald house,

beneactor o the event, has received several hundreds o thousands o dollars. “We are so honored to

hear rom people who have been able to utilize the Ronald McDonald House when they have a loved

one in the hospital, and their heartelt stories o gratitude just makes it all worth it” – Bob Sealy.

This tournament yielded another $10,360 or the Ronald McDonald House and Children’s Charities.

The tournament started Friday, May 20th with the ceremonies happening at Cypress Bend Park. Each day in addition to the hourly prizes, two $5,000 checks are up or grabs to the rst 3.00 and

4.00 lb exact weight bass brought in. The second sh to hit the scales Friday morning locked in at

4.00 to get the day rolling. Top weights continued to climb hour ater hour until Nacogdoches, TX

angler Lynn Allen registered the biggest catch o his lie during the 10-11:00 hour weighing 9.72 lbs

establishing the bar to beat by Sunday aternoon. He caught this brute on a chug bug.

Well beore dawn on Saturday morning, a strong rontal system moved into the area, and brought

with it gale orce winds, dangerous lightening and fooding rain. For those o us in its path it was

good practice or hurricane season. It was during the worst o it when Wayne Ebarb o Many, Louisi-

ana caught his double digit sow. “When the weather is really bad like this, that’s when the big ones

bite” Ebarb said. He came in with his sh just ater 8am, and it tipped the scales at 11.33 lbs. He not

only won that hour but took over tournament lead going into the nal day. The top ve leader boardtook on three new members beore day’s end, every one o them being over 9 lbs.

Sunday was the nal day, and Ebarb’s sh looked like it was going to hold as the biggest bass o the

tournament. That is, until the very last minutes. Clay Shipp o Columbia, LA rushed to the scales with

a humungous bass that locked in at 11.60 lbs to win the tournament. That is just over our ounces o

. , .

4’ o water.” Shipp was shing an area just north o Six Mile. Minutes later the scales closed and he was declared the champion o the 25th annual Toledo Bend McDonald’s Big Bass Splash.

1st Place 11.60 lbs Clay Ship, Columbia LA caught his sh on a Spro rog and won the Sports-

man’s Package: 2011 Dodge Truck plus a Triton Bass Boat powered by Mercury, equipped with
