Heat vs HealthSigns & symptoms o heat related illnesses

Many o us will be heading outside to have some un this

summer, or have to work on outside activities. It is important totake steps to avoid several heat related health issues.

Most o the health issues caused by heat can be avoided by rst

ocusing on avoiding dehydration. Dehydration is when your body

is losing more fuids than it is taking in. It is a common problem,

    especially among young children.

The most common signs of dehydration are:

Thirst, cracked lips, dizziness or lightheadedness, dry sticky

mouth, extreme headache, nausea, producing less or darker urine,

    atigue, and loss o appetite.

Most o us really enjoy a nice tall glass o iced tea or our avorite

sot drink. Surprisingly, these will only add to dehydration right

    along with alcoholic beverages.

Try to get into a habit o drinking a large glass o water beore

heading outside or just being in the heat. Dont wait until your

body says youre thirsty. By then dehydration has already begun.

Continue drinking every 15 minutes or so. Sports drinks (such as

Gatorade) will help replenish sodium, electrolytes and potassium

that is lost when you sweat. Fruit drinks can contain too much

sugar and upset your stomach, especially i you are hot when

you drink them. Diluting ruit drinks with water will help prevent

    stomach irritation.

Wear light clothing. People in the desert oten wear layers o

cotton clothing covering their body. This actually helps keep them

cool by protecting their skin rom the direct sun, and absorbing

sweat. As the air hits the moist clothing, it cools the skin underneath.

Dehydration can lead to kidney ailure i not treated, so pay

    attention to your fuid intake!

Dehydration is not the only thing that can happen when

exposed to heat or extended periods o time.Heat exhaustion Although not the most serious problem,

heat exhaustion is the most common heat-related ailment. Heat

exhaustion happens when a person sweats a lot and does not drink

enough fuids or take in enough salt, or both.

Signs & symptoms: Sweaty, weak or tired, possibly giddy,

    nausea, pale clammy skin

What to do: Rest in a cool place. Drink a sports drink to replace

electrolytes. Avoid caeinated beverages. I the person is vomiting

    or ainting, get medical attention.

Heat stroke Heat stroke is the most serious health problem

or people out in the heat, but is not very common. It is caused bythe bodys ailure to regulate its core temperature. Sweating stops

and the body cannot get rid o excess heat. Victims will die unless

    they receive proper treatment quickly.

Signs & symptoms: Mental conusion, delirium, ainting,

seizures, high body temperature, dry skin, possibly red or

    bluish in color.

What to do: Call 9-1-1 immediately and ask or an ambulance.

Move victim to a cool area. Soak the victim with cool water. Fan

    the victim to increase cooling.

Heat cramps Heat cramps are muscle spasms and can be

very painul. It happens when a person drinks a lot o water, but

does not replace salts lost rom sweating. It will usually happen in

muscles you have been using and are tired.

Signs & symptoms: Muscle spasms or cramps

What to do: Drink a sports drink with electrolytes.

Fainting Fainting usually happens to someone who is not

used to being in the hot environment and is not moving around

much. You need to move around and not stand still to reduce the

    chances o ainting.

Signs & symptoms: Brie loss o consciousness, sweaty skin

What to do: Lie down in a cool place. I the victim does not

recover airly quickly, seek medical attention

Heat rash Heat rash is also sometimes called prickly heat.It can occur in hot and humid environments where sweat cannot

evaporate easily. When the area covered by the rash is large or i it

becomes inected, it may become extremely uncomortable. It can

be prevented by resting in a cool place and allowing the skin to dry.

Signs & symptoms: A rash, consisting o small pink or red

    bumps. Itching.

What to do: Keep skin clean and dry, wear loose cotton

clothing. Air conditioning and cool baths may help. I needed,

apply an over the counter lotion to help with pain and itching.

Lets all have a sae and happy summer.

Drink plenty of uids Use a sun block lotion

    Wear a hat and sunglasses

**WARNING**If you stop sweating, you are in DANGER Go drink water and cool off IMMEDIATELY!

Eagle Rock Energys 15th Annual CrappieTournament & Auction a Great Success

    By Patty Lenderman

The lakes are bustling with various shing tournaments,

weekend warriors, summer vacationers and amilies. Included

in the mix was the 15th Annual Eagle Rock Energy Crappie

Tournament on June 2nd. In an event like this, the shing

tournament is only part o the story.Every year or 15 years now Eagle Rock Energy has headed up this

community event that includes a crappie fshing tournament, lunch,

fsh ry or dinner, and a live and silent auction. The purpose o the

tournament is to raise much needed unds or some hard working

entities that sorely need it. They include: Lakes Area Hospice,

Brookeland Youth Baseball & Sotball, Jasper Youth Shooting Sports

Association, and Vernon Parish TRIAD and Special Kids.

The crappie tournament was a team event, and a team could

consist o one or two individuals. More than one team could sh

out o the same boat, and each person was allowed to catch the

state limit o 25 crappie, but each team could only weigh in a

total o 10.For the second year in a row, the winners o the crappie

tournament were Joe Moorhead and Reese Sparrow. While

there have been other teams that have had the dubious honor

o winning this tournament two years in a row, no one has

accomplished three in a row. Moorhead and Sparrow looked like

they were up to the challenge to try to win it again next year!

All o the sh brought in were cleaned on site by volunteers

and then reshly ried along with French ries, hush puppies and

coleslaw or a ree dinner or everyone in attendance. Fred Rape

o Jasper Lawn Service coordinated the meals and workers to help

prepare and serve them. Nederland Sonic, Zummo Meat Company

o Beaumont, and Mrs. Bairds Bimbo Bakery o Beaumontcontributed as well. Balon Valves personnel took care o the

    cooking or the sh ry.

There were many auction items donated by companies and

individuals which were displayed and everyone had an opportunity

to bid on the silent auction items. Once everyone enjoyed a

wonderul meal, Junior Shoner took the microphone and began the

Stephen O Brien and Anthony Waguspack caughtthe biggest crappie of them all and won $200

There were a vast array of auction items available thatwere donated by both businesses and individuals.

Between the shermen who brought the sh andeveryone who helped prepare the meal, it was ascrumptious dinner for everyone in attendance.

This annual event could not happen without the community support. We would like to thank

all o the anglers that shed in the tournament, the men and women who came and helped with set

up, registration, cooking, and serving the meals. A very special thanks to all o the businesses and

individuals who donated the auction items, and there were many. Thank you to Junior Schoner or

handling the auction and to the generous people who bought the items. This year we topped the unds

raised last year by several thousand dollars, and there are still monetary donations being brought in.

Eagle Rock is proud to support our community and will continue to hold this annual event as long asthe community supports it. Hope to see you all next year! Peggy West, Eagle Rock Energy.

Toledo Bend catsh regulations changed last year to no minimum length limit or channel and

blue catsh with a bag limit o 50 sh (no more than ve sh may be 20 or greater). This regulation

diers rom Texas statewide regulations o a 12 minimum length limit and a bag limit o 25 sh.

Toledo Bend catsh regulations were changed as part o an agreement between Texas and Louisianato make shing regulations on Toledo Bend the same or both the Texas and Louisiana sides one set

o rules or one lake. Now shing regulations or all species o sh are the same or both sides. So now

that we are operating under new rules, where do we stand in regards to catsh?

Texas Parks and Wildlie conducts creel surveys on Toledo Bend every other year to estimate overall

shing eort, harvest, size o sh harvested, and the amount o eort directed at certain sh species.

TPWD just completed a creel survey on Toledo Bend that may help answer the question o whether

the new catsh regulations are a good thing or not. We are aware that most o the catsh harvest that

takes place is rom trotlines and juglines, what we call passive gear. Our creel surveys only sample rod

and reel shermen. None-the-less, it appears that the overall catsh population on Toledo Bend is in

    pretty good shape.

O all the rod and reel shermen we interviewed while shing (> 500) only 2.5% o them weretargeting catsh (again a lot more catsh shermen exists, but as passive gear shermen). We can

iner quite a bit rom these shermen and how they did. An estimated 12,200 channel and blue catsh

were caught during a six month period that we conducted our creel survey. Based on the amount o

shing eort that was devoted by shermen an estimated our catsh were caught or every hour that

was spent shing, which is a very good catch rate. The catch rate tells us that we have very abundant

    catsh population.

Is the part o the regulation that limits harvest to only ve sh that can be > 20 needed?

Biologically speaking maybe not, but overall it may have some positive benets. Based on gill net

sampling results we do not have a dicult time catching 20 catsh, especially blue catsh that reach

larger sizes than channel catsh. As o now our data does not suggest that larger sh are in danger

o being overshed, however with the new increased bag limit (especially or passive gear shermen)that case could possibly change. There is also a strong desire by catsh shermen to have realistic

opportunities to catch larger sh when they go shing, so the ve sh > 20 helps to ensure that

expectation is there. We know that the majority o harvested rod and reel catsh are in the 10-14

range. This is likely a unction o the size o the majority o the sh out there as opposed to what the

preerred size o sh that is to be kept. The biggest concern that we have is the age o the sh. On

Toledo Bend it takes an average o 4 years or both channel and blue catsh to reach 12. That isnt

the end o the world, but it is not stellar growth rates. The increase in the bag limit and eliminating

the minimum length limit should increase harvest and reduce the population o smaller sh,

allowing or more rapid growth to larger sizes.

We have collected some inormation rom passive gear shermen and so ar the results are both

promising and corresponds to our gill net surveys. Passive gear shermen readily catch catsh >20, in act hal o the passive gear caught catsh we observed were > 20. O all the passive gear

shermen we interviewed on average each shing party had to release on average 21 catsh / day

due to them being over the 5 sh > 20 limit. This tells us that there is no shortage o 20 catsh

and quite possibly we need to reevaluate this regulation. That is not to say some protective measures

may be needed or larger sh, but there is no need to be over restrictive. Texas Parks and Wildlie

is continuing to gather more age data or larger sh, collecting data rom passive gear shermen

to determine catch rates o larger sh, and evaluating the opinions o shermen on what uture

regulations will work best or them. Toledo Bend is a world class shery and I oresee it as being one

    or years to come.

As always, i you should have any questions concerning this article or have any other shery

questions please dont hesitate to contact me at [email protected] or call me at409-698-9114. Good Luck and Good Fishing!

Freeman bags 68-15 toWinFLW EverStart Series - Texas Division

    By Jim Binns

The FLW EverStart Series Texas Division, hosted bySabine-Parish Tourist Commission &

Sabine River Authority (SRA), held its third o our stops or the 2012 season on May 31 June

2, 2012 at Toledo Bend Reservoir and it turned out to be a real shoot-out. When the smoke cleared

legendary pro Glen Freeman o Converse, Louisiana nished in the Pro-Angler top spot and Scott

Bailey o Longview won the Co-Angler division. Heres what took place ..

Thursday- It was an exciting morning at beautiul Cypress Bend Park and the area was a beehive

o activity. The American fag waved gently in the breeze, a prayer was delivered or the saety o all

contestants and the National anthem was played. It was denitely a special moment or all. The FLW

EverStart Series Texas Division event kicked o with a 6am launch as the 113 pro anglers and their

respective co-anglers launched their colorul shing rigs and headed or honey holes on variousparts o the sprawling 185,000 acre lake. Toledo Bend was about two eet low and rumored to be in a

typical post-spawn pattern with many dierent shing techniques coming into play.

At mid-morning, Mother Nature showed us why you need a good set o raingear as a weather system

swept through the area with gusty winds and lots o rain. But the unsettled weather and dropping

barometer was a bonus or some anglers because it triggered the bass and showed just how good

    Toledo Bend can be.

Pro Angler Division - Texas pro Tim Reneau, topped the rst days standings by placing a

whopping ve bass limit weighing 26-10 on the weigh-in scales. Reneaus rst bass o the day was a

9-pounder ollowed by a 7-pounder. WOW! It was an early bite or Reneau and most o his sh were

caught over deep grass in about 20-22 eet on a lure he invented a 1 -ounce Lateral Perch. This

hybrid jig has a lead head and a body that sinks rom side to side like a wounded bream.Louisiana pro George Jeane Jr. placed second with a 25-12 limit and a kicker bass that weighed

a whopping 13-4. This catch is in sixth-place on the list o heaviest fsh caught in FLW competition.

The bass was caught o a brush pile at mid-day on a Texas-rigged watermelon/candy Berkley Havoc

Bottom Hopper. Jeane only had fve keeper bites all day but they were the good ones. LaMonte Loyd, o

Gilmer, Texas tied Jeane with a bag weighing 25-12 and his bass were suspended in trees on a hump

in 25 eet o water. He used a custom painted (bream pattern) deep diving crankbait. David Harvey, o

Beaumont, Texas caught a limit weighing 25-10 o main lake ledges or ourth place by using a Big

Bite Creek Creature (tilapia color) on a Carolina rig and big worms rigged Texas style. Harold Allen, o

Shelbyville, La. caught an even 24 pounds to take fth place and in his bag was a 9-6 toad. Allen fshed

Texas-rigged 10- and 11-inch worms slowly o main lake ledges in about 25 eet o water.

Rounding out the top-10 pro leaders were: 6th: Glen Freeman, o Converse, La., 22-11, 7th: Russell

    Cecil, o Willis, Texas, 20-09, 8th: Ryan Pinkston, o Center, Texas, 19-11, 9th: Bert Thompson, o

Benton, La., 19-11, 10th: Phil Marks, o Dallas, Texas, 19-8

Glenn Freeman proudly showing a nice 8 pound

kicker that made his nal day bag weigh a totalof 24-12 lbs. He had a 3 day limit of 68-15.

Glenn Freeman of Converse,Louisiana nished in thePro-Angler top spot.

Co-Angler Division - Benny Aylor, o Round Rock, Texas paired with Trinity, Texas, pro David

Curtis or a limit weighing 16-4 and led the eld. Most o his bass were taken o a ledge on a

Tennessee Shad color Norman DD22 crankbait and a shaky head tted with a 10 -inch Yum Money

Worm. Ronald Milton, o Maurepas, La. took second with 14-6 while Gary Reimers, o Taylor, Texas

placed third with 14-1. Bennie Anderson, o Grand Prairie, Texas and Kerry Barnett, o Waldron, Ark.

    tied or ourth with 13-5.

Rounding out the top-10 co-angler leaders were: 6th: Steve Corbin, o Bacli, Texas, 12-10, 6th: Buddy

Hicks, o Port Neches, Texas, 12-10, 8th: Howard Hartley, o Berwick, La., 12-0, 9th: Elton Brock, o Denton,

    Texas, 11-10, 10th: Kenny Moser, o Alba, Texas, 11-6.

George Jeane Jr.took Snickers Big Bass honors with a lunker weighing 13-4. Six stringersover 20 pounds were brought to the scales with the pros catching 61 limits and the co-anglers

    adding 18.

Friday -Anglers were greeted by bright skies and strong winds that made the open water look

like the Gul o Mexico. I was on the water and I assure you that the waves were raging white-caps

that sometimes exceeded ve to six eet in height. This severely hurt the chances o many open water

anglers and those wanting to sh distant locations just couldnt get saely to their spots. But this eld

    o anglers adapted ast.

Pro Angler Division - David Harvey caught a limit weighing 20-1 that gave him a two-day total

o 45-11. He caught his bass in open water on a Carolina rig and a drop-shot rig using a Big BiteBaits trick worm.

Glen Freeman, o Converse, La. is always tough regardless o the weather. Freeman was the only

other pro angler to break 20 pounds on both days as he brought 21-8 to the scales or a second place

two-day total o 44-3. Freeman shed deep ledges and points with jigs and sot plastics and his all

day bite produced about 15 keepers. LaMonte Loyd, o Gilmer, Texas nished third with a limit o bass

weighing 18-1 or a total o 43-13. He worked humps in 22 eet o water with his custom-painted deep

diving crankbait, a Texas-rigged Berkley Power Worm and a Combat jig with a Sweet Beaver. Tim

Reneau dropped to ourth place with 13-15 with a total o 40-9. He caught his bass on ootball jigs

(Strike King/Rage Craw trailer) o deep water ledges. George Jeane Jr. shed reaction baits and caught

    a limit o 13-9 or a two-day total o 39-5 and th place.

Rounding out the top-10 pro leaders were: 6th: Russell Cecil, o Willis, Texas, 35-9, 7th: RyanPinkston, o Center, Texas, 35-3, 8th: James Elliott, o Center, Texas, 34-3, 9th: Phil Marks, Dallas,

    Texas, 33-10, 10th: Kris Wilson, o Montgomery, Texas, 33-10

Co-Angler Division - Scott Bailey, o Longview, Texas caught a heavy sack weighing 24-6 that

moved him rom 13th place to 1st with a two-day total o 34-2. His catch included a lunker weighing

7-pound, 3-ounces. His bass were caught over ledges in 22-24 eet on a Carolina rig (4-oot leader)

with a redbug color Zoom Dead Ringer. He caught ve keeper bass during the day.

Kerry Barnett, o Waldron, Ark. placed second with 26-6, Benny Aylor, o Round Rock, Texas dropped

to third with 26-4, James Callaghan, o De Berry, Texas was ourth with 25-15, and Buddy Hicks, o

Port Neches, Texas took th with 22-5.

    Rounding out the top-10 co-angler leaders: 6th: Mark Howard, o Mesquite, Texas, 21-12, 7th:

    Bennie Anderson, o Grand Prairie, Texas, 19-13, 8th: Kenny Moser, o Alba, Texas, 18-2, 9th: RandyHicks, o Lumberton, Texas, 18-0, 10th: Neil Herline, o Silsbee, Texas, 17-8

James Callaghan took the Snickers Big Bass award with bass weighing 8-4. Pro anglers caught 50 limits

    and the co-anglers added 16.

Saturday Only the top 10 pros and top 10 co-anglers competed on day three and the 3pm weigh-

in was held at the Many, Louisiana Wal-Mart. It was an exciting time or all as the crowds cheered or

each contestant as they weighed in their sh.

Pro-Angler Division To be a winner in these events you need to be versatile, knowledgeable

and persistent. Glen Freeman showed all o these traits in winning the FLW EverStart Series Texas

Division in grand style by a margin o 9 1/2 pounds. Despite the bright skies, wind and changing

conditions, Freeman managed to bring in bags o bass that weighed 22-11, 21-8 and 24-12 or each

o the tournament days and had a tournament total o 68-15. Freemans nal day bag, when all thechips were on the line, was (1) the biggest o the day, (2) he was the only pro angler that weighed

in a 20+ pound bag each day and (3) did I mention that in that nal bag was an 8-pound kicker?

    That is impressive!

There is an old saying that the early bird gets the worm and in this case it applied to bass shing.

Freeman caught all o his sh on timbered ridges in the mid-lake area and the bite was basically

over ater the rst couple o hours. On Day One the sh seemed to be in the 20-25 oot depths, on Day

Two they moved to a 15-20 oot depth and on the Day Three Freeman caught them in the 8-12 oot

range. Freeman used a Shimano 7-oot rod coupled to a Shimano reel and used 17-pound Seaguar

fuorocarbon to work his Texas-rigged 10 -inch blue feck Yum MightEE worm (-oz. slip-sinker)

and a -oz. Booyah ootball jig (green pumpkin skirt with some strands o purple). The areas he

shed were pure structure no grass, but having deepwater nearby was the key. Freeman also gave

much credit to his Ranger boat and Yamaha outboard motor that was able to get him saely to and

rom his shing locations. Glen Freeman is certainly one o the quality pros in our sport today.

Del Rio, Texas pro Tim Reneau made a strong comeback by weighing in a nice bag weighing 18-14

that gave him second place with 59-7. Heavy winds hampered Reneau rom working his Lateral Perch

(green tail perch color) on day two, but on the nal day he was able to use the Lateral Perch and a

ootball jig with a Strike King Rage Craw trailer to complete his limit. Great job Tim!

David Harvey, o Beaumont, Texas started the nal morning in rst place ater weighing in bags

o 25-10 and 20-1, but on the nal day he had a limit o bass weighing 12-9 and took third place

with 58-4. Harvey used a Carolina rig with Big Bite worms and an Oldham ootball jig with a Big Bite

Creature or his sh. Lamonte Loyd, o Gilmer, Texas caught a limit weighing 11-6 to nish ourth

with 55-3. Baits o choice or this ne angler were the Strike King Series 6XD crankbait and his own

custom painted bream pattern crankbait. Ryan Pinkston, o Center, Texas, used a Bomber Fat FreeShad and a Strike King 6XD to get a limit weighing 16-14 or a total weight o 52-1.

Rounding out the top-10 pro leaders: 6th: James Elliott, o Center, Texas, 52-1, 7th: Russell Cecil, o

Willis, Texas, 51-5, 8th: George Jeane Jr., o Evans, La., 49-7, 9th: Kris Wilson, o Montgomery, Texas,

    48-8, 10th: Phil Marks, o Dallas, Texas, 40-11

Co-Angler Division Scott Bailey, o Longview, Texas is a quiet guy but he carries a big stick.

Going into the nal day he led the co-angler competition by a 7-pound, 12-ounce margin. On the

nal day he weighed in 11-15 or a total o 46-1 which was nearly nine pounds ahead o his nearest

competitor. On the nal day Bailey used a Carolina rig on his starting spot and then he and his

partner ran to the southern part o the lake and worked grass with a Texas rig to nish out their

limits. The Carolina rig had a 1-ounce weight, 4-oot leader and a red bug Zoom Dead Ringer or bait.

The Texas rig had a -ounce tungsten weight with a watermelon blue fake Gene Larew Salt Craw.Benny Aylor, o Round Rock, Texas led day one with a 16-pound, 4-ounce bag, but nished second

in the event with 37-2. Aylor shed a Carolina rig with 8-inch green pumpkin lizards and Yum

Pumpkin Ed jigs with a 10 -inch green pumpkin worm trailer. Kerry Barnett, o Waldron, Ark.

caught 6-13 and took third with 33-3. James Callaghan caught two keepers or 3-2 and took ourth

with 29-1. Neil Herline o Silsbee, Texas nished th with 27-8.

Rounding out the top-10 co-angler leaders: 6th: Randy Hicks, o Lumberton, TX, 26-15, 7th: Kenny

    Moser, o Alba, TX, 26-13, 8th: Buddy Hicks, o Port Neches, TX, 25-8, 9th: Mark Howard, o Mesquite, T X,

    23-8, 10th: Bennie Anderson, - Grand Prairie, TX, 22-9

A tip o the shing cap to FLW and all o its ne olks or putting together such a great event. And a

special congratulations to all o the anglers that competed in this years event. - JB

    2012

The other day a riend said hello and that he

enjoyed the article I had written on nutria rats. I

told him that I didnt remember writing one onthat, and ater checking I had not. As a result this

months article will cover some o the biology,

history and management o the nutria.

The nutria (Myocastor coypus) is a large semi

aquatic vegetarian rodent covered with a dense

grayish brown ur. It is awkward and clumsy looking

on land, but can actually move quite well. It does

not see well , and compensates with a good sense

o hearing. When scared the nutria will head to the

closest water and swim away underwater or lay on

the bottom. The nutria reproduces very quickly and

can have up to 3 litters o 1 to 13 young (called kits)

per year. For cover they will build circular platorms

o compacted vegetation or burrow into levees,

dikes, or other embankments. They live primarily in

reshwater marshes, wetlands, and water bodies.

Nutria are native to South America primarily

in Brazil, Argentina, Bolivia and Chile. They havebeen introduced into many continents including

North America, Europe, Arica, and Asia. They were

introduced primarily or the ur industry on ur

arms and then escaped to the wild. Nutria rst

entered the US in Caliornia in 1889. They were

introduced into Louisiana in the 1930s and escaped

as a result o a hurricane destroying pens. They can

now be ound over the Eastern two thirds o Texas.

Most places in the US where they occur, nutria

are considered pests. This is due in part to their

eating habits. They eat vegetation preerring the

base, rhizomes, and roots o a plant. Nutria are

voracious eaters eating as much as 25% o their

body weight every day which can cause eat outs.

These eat outs are areas where the vegetation

has been removed creating problems or other

wildlie and humans. The other part o the pest

picture comes rom the making o burrows in levees, dikes, and embankments or dens and cover. These

diggings can undermine and cause rupture o key

    water control structures.

Control o nutria is being accomplished by

several methods. More traditional methods such

as trapping and shooting are common. Louisiana

Department o Wildlie and Fisheries has even

implemented bounties or nutria tails in the past.

In addition, newer methods such as promoting

the meat or consumption and the ur or ur

industry have been used with some success. For

example the meat is sold in markets in Russia,

China, and Korea. The meat is similar to rabbit

or dark turkey. Louisiana has ollowed suit and

begun eorts to raise interest in nutria or meat

    and ur.

The nutria has been introduced into the United

States rom South America and due to the abilityto reproduce quickly and take advantage o a

diversity o habitat types has spread widely. Many

agencies and places have begun to mange nutria

populations and the situation has come ull circle

with one possible solution being the cause. For

more inormation contact your local biologist or

consult a website created by Louisiana Department

o Wildlie and Fisheries at www.nutria.com.

I am excited to premier our new 10 BigTail Worm. It is aphenomenally versatile bait. Made with enough otation so that it stands

up off the bottom when fshed with either Carolina or Texas rig.

Notice the extra wide tail. It has abundant action on top or below the

water surface. The ways and conditions this bait can be fshed are so

diverse, it will quickly become a staple in your tackle box. Howard

Thibodeaux and BennettWinUp & Coming Outdoors night tournamentBy Travis Merritt

Up and Coming Outdoors hosted its frst tournamento the 2012 Toledo Bend Night Series June 2, 2012.The skies were clear when the 60 boats took to ToledoBend rom Big Bass Marina on Saturday night. As themoon started to rise, so did the wind, which causedsome the teams to abandon their primary locationsand search or protected areas o o the main lake.Despite the wind, the fshing was good or several teamswho brought nice stringers to the scales under the newcovered pavilion at Big Bass Marina. There were 20 plusfsh over fve pounds weighed in, including one that wasalmost ten pounds. Merritt said many teams had one ortwo really good fsh in their bags but had two or threesmall fsh that kept the weights down or the night.

Patience paid o or Shannon Thibodeaux and JanieBennett, o Hemphill, Texas. The team took the earlypoints lead and won $2,230.00 or their fve fsh weighing26.35 lbs. The team fshed one location all night andonly caught 6 keepers in eight hours o fshing. It was2:10 AM when Thibodeaux and Bennett caught theirourth keeper o the night which was barely ourteeninches. Then, about 2:30 AM, Shannon culled it with a

fve pounder. Thibodeaux and Bennett fshed the southo the lake in Shannons Mercury powered Champion. The team reported catching their fsh on black and blueOle Monster worms with 3/8 ounce weight in 18 to 20eet o water. Shannon and Janie would like to thankBusch Beer and Real Tree Energy Drinks or their support.Thibodeaux said, The Real Tree Energy Drinks were akey to our success. It kept us alert throughout the nightwaiting on those critical bites.

Cole Stewart and Rustin McClelland took secondplace honors with a nice fve bass limit weighing 20.68pounds. Stewart and McClelland got o to a great start,

catching their three heaviest fsh beore dark but thingsslowed down once the sun went down or the youngteam rom Hemphill, Texas. Cole reported only catching

two more keepers the rest o the night. The team wasdead sticking Ole Monster worms and ounce ootballjigs in 20 to 25 eet o water on points. Stewart andMcClelland reported fshing three dierent areas on thesouth end o the lake rom their Johnson powered KingFisher bass boat. Cole and Rustin won $960.00 or theeorts and are in position to take over the points leadwith a good fnish at the next tournament June 16th.

Fishing slow and a limited number o spots seemedto be the secret to Saturday night and it paid o orperennial threats Thomas Jordan and Keith Shell. Theteam weighed in the only other bag over 20 poundsand grabbed third place and $1,235.00 or the night onthe Bend. The teams 20.01 lb bag included the BuschBeer Big Bass o the Tournament which weighed animpressive 9.72 lbs. Jordan and Shell won $295.00 orbig bass plus $200.00 cash and a KVD mirror romBusch Beer to go with their $740.00 or third place.Shell said they caught their fsh on red bug brush hogsin 13 to 17 eet o water. The team had a productivenight catching 15 to 20 keepers rom their Tritonboat powered by Mercury.

The sibling team o Brent and Ryan Kegly oLake Charles, LA bucked the status quo and fshedmultiple locations at a aster pace to secure ourthplace Saturday night. Team Kegly started the nighto cranking Norman DD22s in 10 to 15 eet owater and then switched to green pumpkin ounceootball jigs. Unlike most o the teams I spoke with,Brent and Ryan caught over 30 fsh during the night.Brent reported culling through 20 to 25 keepers toamass their 19.92 lbs stringer. Team Kegly fshed themid lake area o Toledo Bend out o Brents Yamahapowered Skeeter ZX250. 5th Aaron Wilson/Joe Paddy

    muscADINe - AmerIcAs FIrst grApe

    By Bill TalcottJasper Master Gardener

Bill Talcott has the largest muscadine vineyard in the state

of Texas, about halfway between Jasper and Kirbyville. All

Jasper master gardener classes get a practice lesson in pruning

every January. Anyone with more questions about growing

muscadine grapes is welcome to call Maste r Gardener Bill

    Talcott at 409-382-3317.

    Muscadine, Americas First Grape

How many o you have heard your grandparents talk o making

wine or jelly rom the native muscadine grape ound in the

surrounding orests in East Texas? Many o you have tried both

wine and jelly, and i you are a native southerner, chances are you

have shaken a vine or two to collect grapes and taste its distinct

    sweet favor.

Sometimes reerred to as a picnic grape because o its seeds

and thick skins (not something you would want to try in a ormal

setting), muscadine is a native grape that once was ound hanging

rom the orests canopy throughout the Southeastern U.S. NativeAmericans and newly arriving Europeans ound the grape t rom

    Texas to Virginia.

Timber management practices over the last 30-40 years have

reduced the once abundant berry, but have no ear, the muscadine

grape still lives in small gardens, landscapes and even vineyards

    throughout the south.

Currently there are over 300 dierent cultivars (species) being

grown in the southeast. This grape known or its thick skin but

unusual avor, and is beginning to get a lot o attention as a

super ruit. Studies by ood chemists show that it is high in

phytochemicals, which are anti-cancer ghting mechanisms.

The muscadine grape contains a sucient amount o resveratrol,

widely thought to be an overall health-promoting compound, and

one o natures richest sources o polyphenolic antioxidants.

How can you grow your own muscadine grapes? The

vines are airly easy to grow once you get them started. There are

two ways to plant the grape: bare-rooted or a potted plant. Both

ways can be successul i a ew guidelines are ollowed.

Muscadines need ull sunlight so pick your site so that it

receives ull sun most o the day. Soil should be well-drained sandyloam. Muscadines do not like to have their eet wet so the soil must

not hold water or even a short period o time.

Soil pH should be around 6. I in doubt, check with your

local extension agent about a soil test (also available at most local

eed stores) which will give you the necessary steps to correct any

    soil nutrition deciency.

I planting apotted plant, dig the hole about twice the size o

the container and plant the vine about the same depth as the pot.

I planting a bare rooted plant, dig a trench about 6 deep, lay

the bare roots within the trench, cover and pack the soil around

the roots. Most planting should be done in the dormant season

(winter), but a potted plant can usually be replanted successully

almost any time o year i watered regularly.

Several things you need to keep in mind when planting

muscadines: they aredioecious, which means they usually havemale and emale fowers on dierent plants, but some plants have

both male and emale fowers (sel-pollinating). A emale plant

would need a pollinator to product ruit. Check the variety o

plants you plan to grow and make sure you have either a self-

fertile plant or plant a male plant close to the female plant

    to act as a pollinator.

Muscadines are generally pollinated by the wind so insects do

not play a big role in the pollination process. Planting spacing will

be determined by the amount o space you have in your landscape.

The plants need room to grow and a spacing o at least 10-20 t

apart is desirable with at least 6 t. between rows. They can be put on an arbor, but the maintenance required

in accessing during pruning may limit productivity; thereore

trellising is the more common way o growing the vine. This can

be accomplished by stretching a wire (12 gauge or larger) between

posts about 5 o the ground, which gives the vine something to grow and run on. Planted at the base

o the post give it something to attach to.

Once the plant has reached the top o the post and the wire, the tip should be cut to orce the vine

to produce lateral shoots which can be trained to grow both directions along the wire. Train by tying

vines loosely along the wire, keeping any lateral shoots rom the ground to the wire pruned o as

    the vine grows.

Once the vine has been trained, each dormant season the lateral shoots a long the wire should

be pruned back to about 4-6 inches, or 5-6 buds. This allows next years growth to produce ruit or

harvest. Failure to prune each year will result in a reduced crop.Fertilize by applying a well balance blend o ertilizer (13-13-13) through June, somewhere

between to lb o ertilizer per plant, each month during growing season, in a two oot area

around the plant, increasing the radius as the plant gets older.

Water should be applied on a regular basis ater planting. The muscadine is airly drought

resistant even when we had drought conditions as we did in 2011. The plant will start budding in

early March, start to fower in early May, and ruit begin to ripen in August. One caution is that the

grape does not continue to ripen after it is picked. What you pick is what you get.

Yields are 20 to 70 lbs per plant on a mature 6 year old plant. Plant lie expectancies are rom 20 to

50+ years. The muscadine is relatively insect and disease resistant so spraying is usually not necessary

unless there is some small lea insect problem, then a generic insecticide (labeled or edible crops)

    can be used.

The muscadine is also a wildlie ood so you may have to make necessary precautions against deer,

raccoons, possums and birds. The ruit is ormed in clusters and ripens at various intervals; thereore

you may have to pick the ruit over several weeks as each individual grape ripens. Overall the plant is

airly maintenance ree except or annual pruning and general care.

There are many recipes or the muscadine including wine, jelly, jams, and juice. So grow, pick and

enjoy, and who knows you may be the next individual to appear on Dr. Oz giving your testimony

about the benet o Americas First Grape, the muscadine.

Flutter Spoon And Jig TakeChapman To Bassmaster Elite Title

When it comes to winning techniques o the Bassmaster Elite pros, you can usually expect the

unexpected, which was exactly how veteran Brent Chapman won the Toledo Bend Battle Elite event on

Toledo Bend June 7-10. The Kansas angler used a

1-oz., 5-in. futter spoon like those made amous on Lake Fork several years ago; what made

Chapmans pattern unusual is that he shed the spoon in thick timber 25 eet deep and creeled 83

pounds, 9 ounces during the our-day event.

What makes Chapmans win more intriguing is that on Sunday, the nal day o competition, his

bass stopped hitting the spoon entirely. On the verge o leaving the spot, located several miles south o

the Cypress Bend launch ramp, Chapman made a last desperation cast with a homemade ootball jig

adorned with a Tightlines UV Hog trailer, and caught a ve-pounder. Hal a dozen casts later, he added

a 6-7, and just that suddenly the tournament was his. Those two sh anchored his 23-11 catch that

day, but no more came rom that week-long honey hole or rom the spoon.

Cli Pace nished in the runnerup position with 79-5, while Marty Robinson claimed third with

77-11. Fourth and th were taken by Louisiana pro Greg Hackney, who weighed in 76-1; and Elite

rookie Cli Prince, who nished with 69-9.

In a week that saw many o the pros struggling with deep, stubborn bass in 20 to 25 oot depths,

Chapmans heavy spoon pattern appeared to be the anomaly o the week, even though the pros were

keying on huge shad schools rather than actual bass on their electronics. Chapman wasnt shing

vertically, he was casting and then hopping the spoon back through trees and brush; when he did get

snagged, which was airly oten, he trolled over it and jiggled it ree. During the rst three days o the

event, he boated just under 60 pounds o sh, and he only lost a single spoon the entire week.O course, old hands on Toledo and Rayburn can relate to how the bass abruptly stopped hitting

the spoon, since most have experienced this at dierent times. Many believe bass actually become

accustomed to repeatedly seeing a lure wobbling, hopping, or spinning through their midst and

decide it isnt natural aterall. In Chapmans case, even changing to a usually reliable Carolina rig did

    not help.

When I threw the jig out, it was like somebody fipped a switch, he explained aterward. The

Carolina rig had produced a little two-pounder, but that was all and I was getting ready to leave when

I picked up the jig. A ve-pounder hit on the rst cast as the jig was alling. The spoon has always been

my avorite go-to lure in deep water, and Id been using it since practice began, but i I hadnt caught

those sh that quickly on the jig, Im sure I would have just kept using the spoon in another area.

For years, Chapman has been using Tightlines UV plastics, believing the ultra-violet baits oeradditional visual attraction normal sot plastic lures dont have. He won a Southern Division

Bassmaster Open on Lake Lewisville earlier in 2012 using the UV lures, and also attributes his 5th

place nish in the 2011 Bassmaster Classic to them.

Despite winning by more than our pounds, however, the Kansas pro had little breathing room

throughout the week. His main challengers included Mississippi pro Cli Pace, who took the rst day

lead (23-2); Matt Herren; and Marty Robinson. Indeed, when B.A.S.S. cut to the top 12 or Sundaysnal round, all were within 10 pounds o the leader.

Staying in the hunt andmaking the nal cut onSunday, Chapmansspoon bite quit entirely.Switching to a V&Mfootball jig, he foundthe nal days sh heneeded to win.

Pace, who s one o the best in the business when it comes to deep structure shing, caught his bass

on a -oz. V&M ootball jig, alternating occasionally with a

Carolina rigged V&M Super Finesse Worm. He stayed in the mid-lake area shing the ends o long

ridges where he ound bass 24 to 30 eet deep. Keeping his boat in deeper water, he was casting to the

tops o the ridges and crawling the baits down the slope.

I only had three little places where this pattern worked, Pace laughed aterward, so thats where

I stayed. Its a well-known summer pattern on Toledo, but even though I tried it all over in practice, it

never worked anywhere else or me. I probably had less than 10 total bites during the entire three-day

practice, but ortunately, I caught three over six pounds and one over eight during the tournament tokeep me in contention.

Robinson likewise shed the ends o ridges with a jig, in his case a -oz. Buckeye Mop ootball

head; he also added a ew with a Strike King 6XD crankbait. While Pace worked deep water, however,

the South Carolina angler shed the ar upper end o Toledo where the water had more color and the

bass were 12 to 14 eet deep. Overall, he had about a dozen dierent spots that held bass; making a

daily milk run, he could catch 15 to 20 sh each day.

Louisiana pro Greg Hackney, by his own admission, came to Toledo determined to jig bass out o the

deep hydrilla on Toledos lower end. Its a pattern that has won previous tournaments here, but o the

several pros who tried it, only Hackney made it work. Despite catching at least one sh over six pounds

each day, he nished more than seven pounds behind in ourth with 76-1. Using his Strike King 1

-oz. Hack Attack Jig with a Rage Craw trailer, he shed eight dierent spots, none much larger than

his boat. The hydrilla grew to within about ve eet o the surace, but he concentrated along the

deeper edges or on isolated hydrilla patches in 19 to 20 eet o water.

I needed the ast-alling heavier jig to re up schools o sh, and when I got one to bite, I just

threw sh and rod in the bottom o the boat and grabbed another rod as ast as I could, said Hackney.

I kept ve rods rigged identically on the deck, and once I actually had all ve with bass fopping in

the boat at the same time. Getting another jig down to those sh as ast as possible was critical.

Still, despite such unusual tactics, the week belonged to Chapman, whose Sunday total o 23-11 was

one o the heaviest o the tournament. It started with a spoon and ended with a jig, a combination

now worth remembering when Toledos bass suddenly and unexpectedly turn stubborn.

Summer un begins here, on LakeSam Rayburn! Add water and youve gotfshing, swimming, waterskiing and allkinds o un in the sun. Then there arepicnics, barbeques and setting around thecampfre talking about old times. Forget

the worries or a little while. Sight seeingcan be loads o un, cruising the lakechecking out the many types o wildliethat call Sam Rayburn home this time o

year. Now that youve had a small taste owhat you can do, here a ew things youneed to bring with you when youre outand about. Sunscreen is a must - to keepsunburn down. Have plenty o water andother liquids to keep stay hydrated. Dontorget the sunshades and maybe a big hatto help with the rays. I you fnd yoursel

getting hot, a cold towel around the neckcan really help to cool you down. Beprepared or the sun and heat and keep aneye on everyone around you!

This time o year can be very excitingwith the schoolies chasing shadthroughout the day. That can be a lot oun or everyone. Keep a topwater bait;like a Pop-R or spoon handy, and be ready

when they bust the surace. The earlymorning and late evening bite is veryimportant, but dont think you cant fnd

fsh on oshore structure in the middle othe day. You may even fnd a ew that willmove up and hide under the lily pads inthe middle o the day. The topwater bite isjust one way to catch a ew fsh here onBig Sam this time o year. Stanley Ribbitscan be an awesome bait to cover the grassand pads that grow around the edges othe shore. The grass has been on the thinside this year but i you can fnd some, thebass should be there. There are three typeso structure to look or here, Pepper Grass,

Hydrilla and Lily Pads. All o these are bassmagnets this time o year. Now that wevecovered the topwater, lets look at getting inthere with Stanley spinner baits. Chunkinginto the pockets around the grass and lilypads can get some fsh to come out and

play. Or try pulling a ew crankbaits in thesame area. I you can fsh slowly, throwingsenkos, or wacky worms in there can getsome nice action.

Now or the guys that want to get downand dirty, i the grass mats over anywherebreak out the Stanley grass jigs and getto work. This isnt or everyone and canbe a lot o work pitching the grass edgestill you run across a small group o fsh. Some guys go out there looking or 5 bitesa day but they are looking or big fsh.

Remember jigs catch big fsh, and thatswhat a lot o olks are looking or. Ok, nowor the deep plastic baits, big worms andcreature baits on a Carolina or Texas rigo long points and humps. Working waterdepths rom 10 to 25 eet o the edges isa lot work. Finding bait or some cover thebass are using to hide is the frst thing tolook or. Now you get to work and see i thefsh are home and in the mood to play.

Crappie fshing on Sam Rayburn can bea lot o un with some slabs going as much

as 2 lbs. Crappie fshing is or anglers oall ages and skill levels. These little crittersare about the best tasting fsh you can get.Fishing around the bridges under the shadecan put a ew fsh in the box. The other wayis to fsh the stumps on the lake. Even better, put out a ew brush tops around someo these stumps. Yahoo! Youve createda brand new fshin spot. Brush piles are

very important to fshing or crappie atthis time o year and learning how to buildthem and getting them to work is tricky. I

you build them close to trees or stumps youcan just tie up and fsh. I youre buildingthem in open water you have to use yourtrolling motor to hold you in position. Now, or the guys that dont have a trollingmotor you have to be very careul because

getting the anchor hooked into the brushpile is bad business. Not only will it mess upthe fshing, but when you start to haul upthe anchor, you tear up the pile and makeit useless. What you want to do is anchorup wind, say about 50 t. or more, makesure the anchor is holding and youre notdragging it into the pile. Then drit back tothe pile. I you swing around a lot you canget one o the mushroom anchors and let itout straight down to help slow the driting. It wont tear things up like the ones with

the blades and will usually help slow theswinging around. I have put two o themdown with one on each side to help holdthe boat still. Remember it isnt any unto build a good brush pile and then tearit up the frst time you use it, I know. I hadsome good piles out there and came backto fnd that someone didnt use his headand destroyed them.

For those that dont have a boat andwould like to do a little Crappie fshingI have a new Pontoon boat that can

handle up to 8 anglers. It has a changingroom and port-o-potty. Grab the kids,

your riends, and come out and havesome un. Ive been fshing with a youngcouple or a ew years now they
