Coming Outdoors fourth night tournament of the seriesBy: Travis Merritt

Up and Coming Outdoors held its ourth night tournament o the 2011 Summer Series on Toledo Bend

this past Saturday night at Cypress Bend. Despite all the rumors, the boat ramps at Cypress Bend were

operational and perormed well or the 49 boats that shed the Bend. The weather was perect or the new

moon event with winds around 5 MPH and clear skies. Big stringers were elusive but big sh were not. Ater

the dust settled there were six sh over seven pounds weighed in with three tipping the scales at over eight

    pounds.

The team o Levy Dyer and Randy Darison brought the heaviest ve sh stringer to the scales to take 1st

place and $2,000.00 cash. Dyer and Darison reported catching their 21.22 lbs bag on 1/2 ounce black and

blue jig in 15 to 20 eet o water; Dyer commented that the team only caught ve keepers all night. Dyer

and Darison shed the south end o the lake rom their Mercury powered Bass Cat using Shimano rods andreels.

The Busch Beer Big Bass o the tournament was brought to the scales by the team o Tony Coburn and

Ron Vandersypen. The 8.81 monster netted the team $245.00 cash plus the $200.00 Busch Beer Bonus and

a Busch Beer KVD wall mirror. Coburn caught the big sh on a Sasquatch Lures fipping jig in 10 eet o

water on a grass line; he let it slip out that he was shing the jig without a trailer.

The second place team o Martin Mayo and Donald Jeane culled through 11 keepers to amass their 21.15

lbs ve sh stringer. Mayo and Jeane shed out o a Yamaha powered Ranger on the South end o Toledo

Bend. The team reported catching their sh on Texas rigged Ole Monster worms in Blueberry and Red bug

in 15 to 20 eet o water. Martin and Donald would like to thank Jeanes Tackle in Evans, Louisiana.Randy OBanion and Chris Ferguson stayed in the mid-lake area o Toledo Bend to catch their 20.24 lbs

bag o bass. Randy and Chris shed rom a Ranger 521 with a Yamaha 250 in 10 to 15 eet o water using

big worms in plum and black neon. The team shed with Shimano rods and Abu reels around brush piles

on points. Tony Taylor and David Gordan nished 4th with 17.11, Aaron Wilson and Joe Paddy nished 5th

with 16.06, Jered King and Robert Bell nished 6th with 15.75, Jonathan Simon (owner o Simon Outtters

in Kirbyville, TX) and A.P. Castino nished 7th with 15.65.

he points race or the Team o the Year is winding down with only one tournament remaining in the

2011 Summer Series. The team o Frank Little and Trent Airhart have a 15 point lead over Dustin Robison

Once again it was time or the NWTF to have

their Deep East Texas Chapters annual banquet

t the Event Center in Jasper, TX on Saturday

night, August 13th. This is always a good time orveryone. A time to enjoy a great meal, games,

rafes and silent auctions but most o all to

ome together to raise unds to benet the wild

    turkey population in our area.

The NWTF is dedicated to the conservation

the wild turkey and the preservation o the

unting traditions. Since 1973, the NWTF has

elped the turkey population in North America

increase rom 1.3 million to more than 7 million

birds. Now more than 285,000 members strong,

the NWTF continues to help turkey populations

xpand, is improving habitat or all wildlie

nd is providing outdoor opportunities or men,

    women, children and the disabled.

Since 1985 more than $5,680,901 has been

raised by Texas Chapters and spent on projects

within the state. Here are just a ew: $530,617 on

    abitat improvement, $496,773 or educational

programs, $217,593 on JAKES, Women In The

utdoors and Wheelin Sportsmens events. Your

upport goes a long way in helping the wildturkey and habitat restoration in Texas. Our goal

in Texas is more turkeys and the ability to hunt

    them or generations!

Shawn Roberts, who is the Texas/Oklahoma

Regional Field Supervisor, was heard throughout

the room. He was encouraging everyone to

take a nice long look at all o the items that

were available or the silent auction and the

ive auction. There was quite an array o items

    home decorations, pictures, jewelry, beauty

needs, hunting equipment & supplies, cooking

quipment, guns, and knives just to name a ew.This event would not be possible without the

ard work o the committee members and the

onations o this years sponsors, underwriters

    donors.

While you were deciding what to bid on, there

was an ample supply o sh, chicken strips, ries,

oleslaw, banana pudding and plenty o drinks

vailable during the night. The Jasper Gun and Bow 4-H youth were on

and and available to help anyone during the

    Drought puts the heat on

    poorly constructed ponds

I you think its dry, try being a sh during therought, said a Texas AgriLie Extension Service expert.

You know its dry when your sh have ticks, joked

    r. Billy Higginbotham, AgriLie Extension wildlie and

    sheries specialist.

Jokes aside, its a serious matter as water levels drop

or the owners o the more than a million private water

    impoundments in Texas, Higginbotham said.

Channel catsh, bluegill and largemouth bass must

urvive both a shrinking habitat and dropping water-

    xygen levels.

Dropping oxygen levels can be a problem during a

ot Texas summer even when theres normal rainall.

But theres nothing like a drought to highlight a poorly

onstructed pond and magniy the potential or sh

    ills, he said.

Its hot and dry even by Texas standards, but the

ponds that show the problem rst and oremost are

those that have either very small watersheds or those

ponds that were built on marginal soil, he said.

A small watershed means there is not a large

nough area surrounding the pond or sucient

runo to maintain water levels, even during years with

verage rainall, Higginbotham explained. To hold that

runo, the soil the pond is situated in should contain

    nough clay.

These are important construction concepts or

andowners to remember whether they are watering

ivestock or i sh are an important recreation use o

that pond, he said. Fish remain a primary concern to

many owners o small ponds, and there are more thanmillion private impoundments ound statewide.

Obviously, Higgibotham said, when ponds are not

much more than mud wallows, theres little that can

    e done about saving sh.

Certainly, when pond levels reach this point, I

ope they have done something about sh populations

lready, hopeully harvested them, he said.

But even i a pond is well-constructed and its water

evel has only dropped a oot or two, it still behooves

pond owners to pay attention to sh management and

    water oxygen levels, Higginbotham said.

In any case, we want to avoid trying to carry more

than a thousand pounds o sh per surace acre during

    the warm months, he said.

A thousand pounds o sh per surace acre o water

is a good rule o thumb or a number o reasons.

As water temperatures increase, the ability o that

water to hold oxygen decreases, so typically, the hot

ummer months are when oxygen depletions are most

    ikely to occur, Higginbotham said.

Also, as water temperature rises, the metabolic rate

sh, being cold-blooded animals, will increase, and

with that increase comes a need or more oxygen.

But under sunny conditions and moderate

temperatures, aquatic plants -- mostly single-celled

lgae -- will produce enough oxygen to somewhat

set the low oxygen concentration levels o warm

    water.

Cloudy days have been rare during the 2011

rought, Higginbotham noted, but when skies arevercast, photosynthesis is decreased and oxygen

    evels drop urther.

I the pond is too heavily stocked, sh can run

into an oxygen debt, he said.

Hot weather can even bring about oxygen debt

    in moderately stocked ponds.

Furthermore, small ponds that are intensively

managed or high-standing crops o catsh at or above

1,000 pounds per surace acre are going to be among

the rst ponds to experience oxygen shortages as water

    evels drop.

Higginbotham said he has ound that many pond

wners over-estimate the surace acreage o their

ponds by a actor o two or three.

There are simple methods to determine the

ize o a pond, he said. I the pond is more or less

rectangular, the simplest way to determine its size is

to measure the length and width in eet, then multiply

ne measurement by the other to get surace area in

quare eet. Divide this number by 44,000 to get the

    pproximate area in acres.

As an example, a relatively square pond measuring

bout 200 eet on each side will have 40,000 square

eet o surace area, or about one acre.

Calculating a round ponds size is a little more

omplicated. Divide the distance across the pond by

two, square the result, then multiply that number by

    3.1 .

Once the approximate surace area is determined,

the next step is to determine the pounds o sh in the

    pond, Higgibotham said.

Usually, the pond owner knows how many

atsh were originally stocked in the pond and has

pretty good idea how many have been removed

ince stocking, he said. By catching a ew sh and

weighing them, an owner can estimate the total

pounds o sh in the pond.

Pond owners who suspect low oxygen

oncentrations should monitor their ponds closely,

ven i their stocking levels are 1,000 pounds per acre

    r less, Higginbotham said.

Visit the pond shortly ater daybreak, he said. I

sh are crowded up at the surace at rst light, thats

pretty good indication that youve got low-oxygen

    evels.

I this is the case, pond owners should either

immediately harvest sh to reduce the stocking level or

    erate that water, Higginbotham said.

Aerate with a pump or boat motor just to get over

the hump and through the immediate emergency in

rder to raise the oxygen levels, so you dont lose an

    ntire pond o sh.

Bailey & Carter wins fnal Bass N BucksSummer Series event o the season

    By Patty Lenderman

Sunburns, sweat and thousands o dollars won as the Bass N Bucks Summer Series 2011 wrapped up on

am Rayburn August 6, 2011. Scott Bailey & Russ Carter topped the line-up winning 1st place well ahead o

the pack. Anglers o the Year were determined as well as Championship qualiers.

The series wrapped up the season amidst record setting drought and heat. Triple digit temperatures have

become a daily phenomenon while everyone continues to pray or rain in our region. Many stumps, humps

nd old structures are now seeing the light o day all around the lake that have not been seen since the lake

rst lled. This series only allows a three sh limit per team, but the contenders weights were still quite high.

Dwain Burns and James Bass were the rst to weigh in, bringing their creel hours early. We had caught

our initial limit on topwater baits early, by around 7:15am, the team explained. Once we had those

secured, we switched to Texas rigs. Fishing a point in 2 eet o water, Dwain landed their big one. It wasround 7:30 when she hit. Culling a smaller sh and adding several pounds to their limit, they continued

shing. It wasnt until 11:30 when we made another cull with a pounder. We went to put it in the

livewell and saw that one was dead. Dead sh cannot be culled, and there is a penalty on the weight or a

dead sh. We were just getting to our really good spots. It was a tough decision, but we decided to come on

in to make sure we didnt lose any more. Their big bass tipped the scales at 8.22 lbs, and held or Big Bass

o the tournament winning $500. Putting their other two on the scales and deducting a hal pound penalty,

their ocial tally went to 14.66 lbs. While initially establishing the leaderboard with their weight, it would

be beat three times beore days end giving them a th place overall nish and another check or $800.

Scott Bailey & Russ Carter won the tournament with their three sh limit weighing 18.07 lbs. They

targeted a single spot and stayed in it all day. We shed a drain in 5-12 o water, and caught sh all day!

They used Old Monster worms in a redbug color or most o their creel, although they did catch one on aZara Spook. Scott caught their kicker (7.28 lbs) around 9am, then Russ caught one that was nearly its twin

t noon. It was slow shing. We just had to keep going back over all o the spots in that area until they hit.

We knew they were there. The team won $3,000 or their 1st place nish.

Danny Iles & Stephen Johnston won 2nd place with 15.71 lbs. The bite was slow or us, we didnt land

that many sh, Danny stated. We just junk shed. Went to some shallow water, some deep. Caught a ew

on top and the rest on V&M worms Texas rigged and wacky wormed. Targeting grass in main lake areas,

the team had their limit put together around 9am. We only had eight or nine keepers all day. Around noon,

we were able to cull two o them. Bass N Bucks presented them with $1,200 or their 2nd place nish then

abelas added another $250 to that or being the highest nisher signed up or that bonus. The team would

ike to thank Ranger, Mercury, Power Tackle, Carlsons Marine, Foster Fence, HumminBird, MinnKota, V&M /

yclone Baits, Needmore Tackle, Costa Del Mar and Navionics or their support.

3rd place winners Phil Addison and Bobby Smith had one tactic, one bait and three spots. We went to

ily pads using a Strike King KVD rog and caught sh all day long. They caught an early limit, then culled

ll o those. Our last cull was at 12:00, shing really shallow. We just kept at it all day long. Their limit

weighed 15.24 lbs garnering a $1,000 check. The team would like to acknowledge Titeline Rods, P Line

    Hello Anglers.

In my opinion the biggest challenge or me this month on my avorite

shing hole will not be catching sh but will be navigation. The shing this

all will be o the charts as sh start to migrate up large drains and eeder

reeks. Another thing that is dierent this all, besides the lack o water,

is the abundance o submerged as well as visible grass including miloil,

peppergrass as well as hydrilla. In my neck o the woods, which normally isrom Housen/Indian Mounds south to the dam, the increase o hydrilla is

by ar the biggest news as ar as aquatic vegetation. In August we targeted

numerous long points, humps and ridges which had scattered-to-heavy

ydrilla and many o those had never had any kind o grass on them much

ess hydrilla. The neat thing about those structures was (is) as that they held

sh and otentimes really nice sh. Another strong actor that will impact

shing this month on Toledo will be the lack o boat trac. In September we

lways see a decrease in boat trac because o the various hunting seasons

that will open plus many deer hunters spend lots o time this month working

n camps, blinds, leases and ood plots and never put their boat in the water

ollowing Labor Day. Teal and Dove season also gets underway.Another specic actor which will impact boat trac this month in

particular on Toledo involves the moving o the East Texas Division o Bass

hamps 2011 Championship o Toledo because o the low water level on The

Bend. The tournament was scheduled to be held at Fin and Feather Resort

in Toledos Housen Bay which has been newly restored and is a really nice

acility. However, ater weeks o struggling with what to do about saety issues

or tournament competitors, Bass Champ tournament ocials on August 16

sent out a mass mailing inorming anglers and media that the championship

will be moved to Sam Rayburn with headquarters at Umphrey Pavilion. A

requent question is that Rayburn is also extremely low so why move the

tournament? Actually Rayburn may be slightly lower than Toledo but the

lakes are greatly dierent when it comes to navigation. On The Bend you

have to run boat lanes most o the time while on Rayburn that is not the case.On Rayburn one o the main concerns is running up on a sand bar

which now nds many o these shallow areas great distances oshore. The

main issue on Toledo is the thousands o stumps which are now just at the

surace or just under the surace. These stumps are basically all petried

wood and are almost like concrete. I you hit one, somethings going to

give and it will not be the stump. I am disappointed the tournament had to

be moved because the businesses around the lake really needed the infux

o cash that 00 anglers would bring to the area or the three days o the

event plus multiple days o preshing or the tournament. However, with the

circumstances given Bass Champ ocials, they elt they had no other option.

Besides, to move a major event like this involves a mega amount o workand last minute planning. There was even a wedding scheduled at Umphrey

Pavilion the weekend o the Championship and that was moved to the

Rayburn Country acility. I would have loved to have heard the conversation

when the prospective bride was asked to move her wedding location.....you

want me to do what? She must be an avid bass angler. However, things

worked out and the bride-to-be is apparently happy so Rayburn It Is or

Skeeter Bass Champs Championship 2011 October 1 and 2!

I plan to sh south Toledo numerous days this month (September) and

look or shing to be excellent-to outstanding as so much o the structure willbe dened plus very low boat trac and plenty o grass. I am very amiliar

with the area and while we may not run the lake as much as normal due to

lake hazards, we will still be able to get to numerous bass-lled locations.

The biggest challenge will be nding a boat ramp where I can launch my

outstanding Skeeter 21 FX which is my all-time avorite boat and I have

owned over 20 boats in my lietime o shing. Be sae, good shing, pray or

rain and God Bless the USA!!

September brings the promise ocooler weather. Fall is in the air andBig Sam will start to come out othe grip o another hot summer. The

nights will be getting longer andthings will start to cool down. What we need is some rain, and lots

o it, to bring the lake back up. In midAugust the lake was more than 10 tlow and still dropping. Some water waslost to evaporation and more due to therelease o water. Even with all that westill had lots o days on the lake fshingand catching quite a ew Bass andCrappie. We have gotten to see thingsthat you dont get to see very oten. A

lot o sand bars, humps and stumpfelds. This is a chance to explorer thecreeks and many points that bass callhome much o the time. It has been anopportunity to take pictures o somebeautiul old stumps and seldom seenlandscape.

Big Sam is the biggest lake that issolely in Texas with miles o shorelineto fsh, most o it undeveloped. Therearent a lot o boat docks and piershere, just good old fshing. Hear the

sounds o nature. I you listen closelyyou may hear the bald eagles talk toeach other. I you are lucky you might

see them soaring in the air or fshalong side o you. This is the place toget away and enjoy being outdoors.

The shad will start bunching up on

the points and then move back into thepockets. The game fsh will be rightbehind them eeding and attening upor winter. This is when the top waterbite starts to kick in. A lot o dierentbaits come to mind as the grass will beon the surace in a lot o places. This

will make or some exciting rog actionover the grass. Have a good rod andheavy line on to pull them out o thethick cover. I like to use an AmericanRodsmiths 7 to 76t medium heavy

rod to set the hook and yank themout o there. A Stanley Ribbit rog isone o my avorites to throw over thegrass then burn it back to the boator some great action. Here are a ewmore baits or topwater - the BuzzBait, Spook, Yellow Magic and Pop-Rs. There will be a lot o fsh sittingon the outside edge o the grass lines.

Working the outer edges with a Stanleyspinnerbait or crankbait can reallyshake things up. On the deeper edges

the fsh will be holding on points andcreek channels as they move back tothe pockets. Heres where a Carolina

or Texas rig comes into play workingthe deeper edge. I you can fnd somedeep grass the Stanley grass jig has putsome nice fsh into our boat on days

when we couldnt get anything going. Its a lot o work and the bite eels a lotdierent. With practice you learn howthe baits work and thats what makesthe dierence in catching fsh.

The Crappie will start to get moreactive around the brush piles as allgets here. They should start to get intothe all pattern beore moving up theriver and creeks as they do each year.Dont sit at home and miss out on theun. We have seen some all trips fll

the ice chest as the fsh start to bunchup. Everyone has loved the pontoon

with the shade and the changing room with the port-o-potty. We even have aan that can help i you get to hot outthere. It makes the trip a lot nicer oreveryone. Get your all trip booked. Wecan handle up to 8 anglers.

September! The ninth month o theyear and we still have no rain. Folksthis is getting serious. I really dontknow what to say, except we need

water. Please watch or any type o fre,it doesnt take but a minute or one othese small fres to get really big. We

would like to say thanks to all the frefghters in these parts. You all shouldtell them how much we appreciatethem. They are all volunteers and doa great job.

School has started and things willslow down a little here on the south

end o the lake. We have some largechampionship tournaments aboutto start. We wish all the anglers welland ask that you all be careul andremember to take good care o ourfsh. Thanks to all our tournamentproducers or choosing us or your

tournament headquarters. Thanksto Bass Champs or moving yourchampionship here to the UmphreyPavilion. It will sure bring ourmerchants a shot in the arm. I wouldalso like to thank the board membersand Bryan at the Umphrey Pavilionor jumping in to help to make thishappen.

NOW LETS FISH !!!!!!!! The Bass areshallow AND deep. I know that soundsdumb but with the water in the shapeit is, there is no telling where youllcatch a fsh.

Some guys are fshing out deepand some are still throwing rogs andtop water up shallow. There are somepretty good schools out along the river

with a lot o whites as well as hybridsmixed in. This is un early as well aslate in the aternoon.

The Crappie are slow with the wateralling o the brush and being 92 to 98degrees or the water temperature. Youcant expect much more. You can takea Jigging Spoon out along the deepcreeks as well as the river, use yourelectronics and fnd the fsh, throw abuoy and start jigging. You will catchsome Crappie, Yellow Bass as well as

Whites and Hybrids. Many Cat-fshing riends say its too

hot!!! I really can blame them.Well thats about it or now. I you

get out on the lake please be careul.

There are shallow spots all over thelake. Remember our local merchantsand i we can be a help just call.

21.26 lbs takes the win at

    BL on Sam Rayburn

The Bud Light Trail held its second in a series o ve Fall Series events on Sam Rayburn August 20,

2011. With weights climbing right along with the heat index, several heavy sacks were seen with two o

them over 20 pounds. Kevin Borowski and Justin Lackey won the tournament with the heaviest sack by

less than a one pound margin.

It was another hot summer day or contenders out on Sam Rayburn. Mother Nature has not slacked

o one bit as new records are being set or number o consecutive days over 100 degrees. As the lake

continues to lower, most anglers are narrowing their search or big bass to areas with deep water access.

Such was the case or winners Kevin Borowski & Justin Lackey. We had lots o un, but boy it was

hot! Their plan was to catch em early, hopeully by 9am. Everything went just as we planned. They

targeted grass lines near deep water with crank baits. We ran our baits parallel with the grass lines.

The second bass we caught was our biggest o the day. Their kicker weighed in at 7.05 lbs, narrowly

missing Big Bass o the tournament previously weighed in. The bass bit early, and when it quit it was

done. We made one cull at 10:00, but ater that we didnt catch anything bigger than two pounders.

The team, compiled o a gol course superintendant and a proprietor o a stump grinding business rom

Houston, bested the pack with a total o 21.26 lbs. Were open or sponsors!

Russell Lee and Landon Ware are a strong summertime shing team. Their tactic or success was to

exclusively sh brush piles at the mouths o creeks in 12 to 15 o water. No more, no less, according to

Landon. Using Carolina rigged brush hogs, they reported an all day bite. The last two hours were really

rough on us, but I estimate boating at least 20 keepers today Landon said. Their biggest bass weighed

in at 6.57 lbs. Putting the remainder o their limit on the scales, their weight totaled 20.54 lbs to win

2nd place. They would like to thank their sponsors: Power Tackle, Bass Assault Lures, Legend Boats(Russell), and Ranger Boats (Landon).

3rd place was won by Billy Guinn and Scott Dodson. Our day started out really good. We started

catching sh right away, and made our rst cull at 7:15am. The team elected to head to the North end

o the lake, shing shallow grassy fats. All o our sh were caught on topwater lures. Our rst ve sh

probably weighed 12 pounds all together. We hit about 4 or 5 spots, and culled all but one o our initial

limit. It was a great day or us. By days end, they had upgraded their creel to an ocial weight o 18.61

lbs to win 3rd place overall. They would like to thank Pro Gator Boats, Evinrude, Karu Lures, Stanley

Baits, the Bud Light Trail or having these events, and Umphrey Pavilion Manager Brian Branum.

The Big Bass o the tournament was registered early on in the weigh in by Robert Waltermyer and

James Thompson. When they brought their sack to the scales, they established the initial overall lead

nd Big Bass with their 7.27 lb kicker. As the rest o the pack came in, their overall standings landed on

n 8th place win, but their kicker won Big Bass o the tournament.

Entry ee or the Bud Light Tour Fall Series is only $160 per team. The weigh in site or the remaining

three events in the series is at the Umphrey Family Pavilion on Sam Rayburn. Even i you have never

    By Robert Baker, TPWD

eer Permits the longand short o it

Many olks want to know how they can harvest more does or get

rid o some o the cull bucks on their place. This is sometimes an

asy quick answer and other times it takes a little while. The quick

nswer is deer permits, and the long answer is it depends on what

ind o permit. There are 2 main types o permits and I will go

    ver them in this article.

Landowner Assisted Management Permitting System (LAMPS)

is a computer driven permitting system that allows or the harvest

antlerless (one antlerless deer per permit) deer during the

ntire general season. The number o permits is derived rom the

type and amount o habitat types on the property. This is done by

lling out an application and turning in a map o the property.

he computer then weighs each habitat type based on what degree

use it gets rom deer. For instance a coastal bermuda grass

pasture is going to be o almost no use to a deer while a new clear

ut with lots o shrub growth will be o high use to deer. Then

issues permits based on this weighted scale and deer density or the

ounty (based on surveys conducted by the state).

The process to get LAMPS permits is airly simple turn in your

pplication (can be downloaded o o www.tpwd.state.tx.us or

    all (409) 489-0823) beore September 1st or a guaranteed

response beore the season or by October 1st or any response.

hen harvest data (consisting o how many deer were killed on the

property) must be turned in by February 15th.

LAMPS is one o the programs oered. It is a good starting

point or those interested in managing their deer herd. It is a basic

program that encourages the harvest o antlerless deer and good

record keeping as part o any management plan.

Managed Lands Deer Permits (MLDP) is a habitat driven

program based on a written wildlie management plan. This plan

is written by a biologist (i a private biologist is used the plan

must be approved by TPWD) and includes what is needed to get

the habitat to a point where it needs to be and how to keep it there

once it reaches that point. There are 3 levels to this program. The

start is level 1 in which antlerless permits are issued, and level 3 is

the top in which a property is issued buck and antlerless permits

nd can use them rom the beginning o archery season until the

end o February. Antler restriction laws do not apply or properties

participating in Level 2 or 3 MLDP.

LDP permits are harder to obtain than LAMPS because more

work is required on the part o the leaseholder or landowner.

The data that must be collected by the hunters include hunter

observations, density data, harvest data, and management

practices accomplished. The data must be turned in by deadlines

setup by the biologist issuing the management plan. Movement up

through the program is dependent on accomplishing good habitat

    work and data collection.

he MLDP program is or properties that are serious about

managing the deer herd and associated habitat. Work is

required by the manager and must be completed or continued

    participation in the program.

agging requirements change based on the program (and level

or MLDP) please read all material sent out with permits. This

will ensure that license tags are not used needlessly, the harvest

log is not lled out when it doesnt have to be, and hunters can

stay legal. Permits can also serve as proo o sex in certain

situations so unskinned heads dont have to be transported.

Permits can be used to harvest a ew more antlerless deer or can

be used to intensively manage a piece o property. Either program

mentioned is ree o charge and both programs promote wise

use and stewardship o the resource. For more inormation on

any o these programs or others checkout www.tpwd.state.tx.us or

    talk to your local biologist.

Q: Is the saying red sky atnight, sailors delight, red sky atmorning, sailor take warningreally accurate?

A: Generally, the answer is yes, says Brent McRoberts of Texas

A&M University. The saying hasbeen around for thousands of

years and is even mentioned inthe Bible in the book of Matthew:When in evening, ye say, it willbe fair weather, for the sky isred; and in the morning, it willbe foul weather today, for the sky

is red and lowering. The saying,McRoberts notes, may be themost famous of all weather lore.It goes back to the observationsmade by sailors who had aclear 360-degree view of thehorizon from the ships masts. Inthe northern hemisphere, most

weather patterns move from thewest to the east, so if a sailorcould see a red sunset to the

west, it meant that skies wereclear in that direction and thattomorrow would likely be a niceday with few clouds.

Q: What is the science behindthe saying?

A: When the sky is red at nightor sunset, it is caused by thesun striking particles in the

atmosphere. But if a sunrisehas a reddish tint or looks rosycolored, and you can see cloudsover the horizon, it might meanthe nice weather has passed anda storm system is headed your

way, McRoberts adds. It meansan area of low pressure couldbe moving in, and low pressurealmost always means clouds andoften rain or thunderstorms.

Weve all beencomplaining about theproblems associated withthe record low lake level.

Very ew boat launchesare available, and to

say the least, you better be very careul running thelake. However, the good news is the shing is gettingbetter everyday. The days are getting shorter andtemperatures will be alling as we start heading intoall.

Youve heard the old adage that 90% o the share located in 10% o the lake. Well, our 10% hasgrown to around 20% when you actor in the low lakeconditions. Im predicting the shing this all will besome o the best weve ever had.

Fishing Forecast: The shing pattern or the rstpart o September is pretty much the same as it hasbeen or July and August- a typical summer pattern. As we head into the latter part o September, watch or

more top water activity and schooling action. We need to key in on the early morning and late

evening bite when the bass are the most active.Throw top water plugs, buzz baits, rogs, jerk baits, shallow diving crank baits and sot plastics over andin the grass thats close to deep water. Once the sungets overhead, back out to the deeper water dropsand ledges with deep diving crank baits and largesot plastics in 15 to 25 t o water. Mid day lookor schooling sh o the main lake points, timberlines, boat lanes and fats close to deep water drops.A top water plug, shallow diving crank bait, trap or

Texas rigged sot plastics will all be productive. Manytimes your bigger sh will be caught on the bottomunderneath the schooling sh.

The White bass will be ollowing the shad and will

be moving around the lake. Typically, unless we havea weather change, the Whites will school in the sameareas and around the same times each day. RattleTraps, tail spinners, shallow diving crank baits andtop water plugs can all be productive when sh areschooling. Also, check out the main lake river channelsand bars with slab spoons and tail spinners in 18 to25t o water.

The Crappie shing is best at night with live baitor jigs tipped with live bait over planted brush in 15plus eet o water.

BASS ~ Good. Mostsh are coming onpoints in 12t to 18tusing a Strike King XD6 in root beer orsexy shad. On slowdays drop out to 19t to

30t and throw a Carolina rigged Zoom nesse wormin smokin green or a 5/8oz ootball head jig witha watermelon/gold fake Yamamoto twin tail grub.Excellent at night on black Texas rigged worms and

ootball head jigs rigged with a black emerald brushhog. As the weather starts to cool towards the end othe month, try a black buzz bait early and late orsome great top water action. I you havent shed theTemple Fork Outtters [TFO] rods designed by GaryLoomis you are missing out on some o the best rodson the market.

BREAM ~ Slow. Over brush in 22 - 28 o water oncrickets and Berkley power maggots.

CRAPPIE ~ Good. Being caught in 23- 28 o waterover brush on red/chartreuse tubes rigged on a 1/16

oz. jig head and shiners tight lined (best at night). Aswe get more toward the end o the month, the daytimeshing will pick back up.

CATFISH ~ Excellent. In 22 to 38 o water onbaited holes on live carp and Catsh Charlie bloodbait.

WHITE BASS ~ Excellent. Being caught onhumdingers and slab spoons in chrome or goldon sandy points in 18t to 22t. Schooling sh areshowing up in the late evening on fats and old roadbeds making or some ast action.

LAKECONDITIONS: As thelake drops to neverbeore seen levelswhich is where we areat the rst o September,

or the rst time I nd mysel in new territory. Ielt condent to navigate the southern 1/3 o thelake with levels down to 162.2 which is where thelevels dropped in 2006 and we had no problemsrunning the lake. However, the lake level currentlyis 161.60 and continues to all. The saest placeto run now is in the old Sabine River bed which iseasy to locate using any modern day electronics/mapping and once you nd the river it is easy tonavigate using visual only as the opening throughthe timber is easy to see. Generating at the damcontinues at the same pace it has been or monthswith one unit running 2.5 hrs three-our times perweek. Water clarity all over the lake is clear to veryclear. On our website www.joejoslinoutdoors.comwe are working hard to keep posted an up to date

listing o open boat ramps and we are updatingsometimes several times each week.

FISHING REPORT/BASS: September willeature several bass catching patterns and theshallow grass bite will be one o the best. We are working the shallow grass early using topwaterpoppers and the best up top bait last month wasa Pro Pop by Bill Norman. The Pro Pop is a 3/8 ozbait that throws like a rock. I am using it on 15 lbtest Berkley Big Game with top colors or us beingTennessee Ghost and black/chrome. This lure hassuper hooks as well as a very enticing and highlyvisible abric tail that really gives a great prole inthe water. Bass will kill it.

From daylight until late morning a light weighted Texas rig as well as a light-weightedCarolina rig worked over scattered grass in 6 to15 t will be excellent. On our Texas rigs we areusing Berkleys new Havoc Series Bottom Hopperin watermelon red, watermelon smoke candy andwatermelon. On our light Carolina rigs (1/8 to 1/4oz) we are using Stanleys Itza Bug and Wedge Hog

as well as Berkleys Bottom Hopper. On our deeperTX rigs and Carolina rigs (12 to 25 t) we are using1/2 and 3/4 oz weights with Berkley Power Wormsin red bug, plum and watermelon candy.

On all o our TX and C. rigs we are using Berkley100% Fluorocarbon (clear) line in 15 and 17 lbtest with 3/0, 4/0 and 5/0 Daiichi and XPoint o-set worm hooks. Also, Sept is one o my avoritemonths or crankbaits with Normans DLN andDD22 crankbaits hitting ridges and points in 8to 25 t. . Shad patterns are our best producerson crankbaits. Schooling bass will be great thismonth and we will work them with jigging spoons, weightless Berkley Jerk Shad and Flukes and ProPops. I like main eeder creeks or schoolies.
