    Livewell Fish Care Very Important

    During Summer Months

The popularity o bass shing has exploded

during the last 20 years. During this time many

changes have taken place, including increases

in shing technology and the advent o more

restrictive harvest regulations. However, one o the

most important changes includes increased angler

acceptance o catch and release practices. There is

no doubt that the popularity o catch and release

has helped sustain and enhance bass sheries

throughout Texas. Currently, almost all bass

tournaments require release o all live sh weighedin and penalize those with dead bass. In addition,

conservation o the resource should be a major

consideration o all tournament anglers. Thereore,

tournament anglers should do everything possible

to ensure survival o released sh. By ollowing the

guidelines below, anglers can minimize stress on

    bass while held in livewells.

All sh care recommendations are based on

water temperature, oxygen, ammonia levels, and

proper handling o sh. Stress in the livewell

occurs as a result o low oxygen levels and

ammonia buildup rom sh waste. As water

temperatures increase, water holds less oxygen,

bass consume more oxygen, and ammonia

becomes more toxic. This implies that as the

water temperatures increase, sh in a livewell

require more attention and care in order to

    reduce stress.

When water temperatures are below 75 degrees

and less than 10 pounds o bass are in the

livewell, at a minimum anglers should run either

the recirculating (aerating) pump or intake

pump at timed intervals. These timers should be

set to run as oten as possible. By recirculating

water, uniodized salt can be added to livewellwater (1/3 cup per 5 gallons o water) to match

the body fuid salt concentration o bass (0.5%).

Fish experiencing stress absorb excess water

while in the livewell, diluting body fuids below

levels necessary or survival. Maintaining the

salinity o livewell water to that o sh body fuids

minimizes eects o stress. Uniodized salt is cheap

and can be purchased in bulk (30+ pound bags)

at your local eed store under the name Stock

Salt. Pre-measured amounts o salt can be

carried in ziplock bags. Many commercial waterconditioners (i.e., catch and release ormulas)

cannot be recommended by state agencies, not

due to ineectiveness, but because the ingredients

have not been tested by the U.S. Food and Drug

Administration as sae or human consumption.

I water is recirculated, replace hal o the

livewell water every 3 hours to prevent toxic

ammonia build up that results rom sh waste.

When water is replaced, additional salt needs to

be added. Pumping resh water in on a timer with

intake pumps prevents toxic ammonia buildupbut prevents use o salt additives. When there

are more than 10 pounds o bass in the livewell,

anglers must run either recirculating or intake

pumps continuously to ensure optimal livewell

conditions. Adequate, ully charged boat batteries

should have no problem providing continuous,

    all-day power to the pumps.

When water temperatures are above 75

degrees, anglers must run their recirculating

pumps continuously, even i there is only

one bass in the livewell. As discussed above,

uniodized salt must be added to keep sh in

the best shape possible. For boats equipped only

with timer-operated pumps, the switches should

be replaced to allow the pumps to operate in

continuous mode. Again, at these temperatures,

running pumps on a timer does not maintain

adequate oxygen levels in livewells. At these

warmer temperatures, cooling the livewell water

with ice is very important and allows it to hold

more oxygen and reduces oxygen consumption

by bass. Enough ice needs to be added to reduce

the livewell temperature 5-10 degrees below

    reservoir surace temperature. However, excessive

cooling beyond 10 degrees can cause heat shockand death when bass are released back into the

lake. Block ice is preerred (it lasts longer) and

can be made by reezing water in hal-gallon

milk jugs or 12-ounce water bo ttles. Again, when

using recirculating pumps hal the livewell water

needs to be exchanged every 3 hours to prevent

ammonia buildup. When water is exchanged,

additional ice and salt need to be added. As a

rule, 8 pounds o ice will cool the typical livewell

    5-10 degrees or 3 hours. A rozen, hal-gallon

milk jug will weigh 4 pounds. During a typicaltournament day (8-9 hours), 8 pounds o ice

added every 3 hours when water is exchanged

should maintain a cooler livewell temperature.

Thermometers are a must to insure water is not

cooled more than 10 degrees. Thermometers

used to measure vehicle air conditioning work

well and can be purchased at auto stores. Most

o the electronic GPS/sonar units can support

additional temperature sensors that can be

permanently mounted in livewells. Here, ability

to plot both livewell temperatures and thelake surace temperature on the GPS/sonar

screen allows or continuous monitoring and

    adjustment o livewell temperatures.

To maintain livewell-held bass in the best

    possible shape, pure oxygen-injection systems

(oxygen bottle, regulator, and ne-pore air

diuser) can be installed or under $300. By ar,

lack o oxygen is the primary reason sh die in

livewells. During the most extreme conditions

    (i.e., 15 + pounds o bass in a livewell over

85 degrees), these systems are the only way to

maintain optimum oxygen levels. I have this

system installed in my boat, and would be happy

to display and discuss this equipment with

anyone that is interested. A TPWD presentation

on these oxygen systems can be ound at the web

link at the end o the article.

Fish hooked in the gills or stomach may

die even with appropriate care due to excess

bleeding. Dead sh will cause poor water quality

conditions in the livewell and should be removed

immediately and placed on ice. However, as

required by state game laws, dead sh must be

retained as part o your daily limit. It is illegal to

cull dead sh.The weigh-in is an additional stress actor.

Probably the most important thing anglers

can do during this time is to not carry bass in

dry bags rom the boat to the holding tanks.

As simple as this sounds, it is surprising how

many anglers do not take the time to get enough

water in the bags to prevent stress during the

time the sh are put into the bag until they

reach the lie-support tanks or scales. Fill your

weigh-in bag with at least 4 gallons o water

rom your livewell, especially i you have beenusing ice to cool the livewell water. Holding tanks

at the weigh-in line should be aerated, cooled

with ice, and treated with salt. Eort should be

taken while in the line to exchange the original

water in the bag with the aerated, treated water

in the tanks and to keep your bag submerged

in the holding tanks. Many tournaments

now have multiple air stones in each holding

tank or placement inside your weigh-in bag.

Oxygenating your water in the weigh-in bag

while in line is absolutely critical, as oxygenin the weigh-in bag can drop to zero in just a

    couple o minutes!

I sh are held or pictures, wet hands beore

touching sh. Grasp sh by lower jaw but never

bend the head down or hold horizontally by

jaw. Avoid touching the body o the sh as this

removes the protective mucous covering. When

holding bigger sh, the lower body should also

be supported with a wet hand under the belly

to prevent jaw damage. Do not keep sh out o

water any longer than you can hold your breath.

Air exposure is extremely stressul to sh.

B Robrt Bakr (Txas Parks ad Wildlif Dpartmt)

What can I do toget rid of bugs?

It is the time o the year when people are

spending more time outdoors enjoying all

that nature has to oer. The many good things

that people enjoy can be spoiled by several bad

things such as sun burn, poisonous plants,

or insects. There are only a couple o ways to

ght the rst two things, but there are many

methods to control insects. Many o them ocus

on chemicals or either preventing them rom

biting or killing them outright. The methodso chemical control are very numerous and

readily available, but other methods that are less

harmul and oten cheaper arent as well known.

Knowing about these other methods can help as

they may not be as harsh (to the environment or

    people) and can be cheaper.

    Organic pesticides are becoming more

common and cheaper in many stores. These

products are supposed to be easier on the

environment than chemical pesticides. They can

be used in similar ashion to the nonorganic

products. Many products that can help with

insect control can have other uses such as

diatomaceous earth, egg shells, and hot red

pepper sprays/powders to name a ew. These can

oten be placed or sprayed around areas to create

a barrier that insects will not cross. With any

pesticide always ollow all instructions on theproduct label.

Bats and birds that eat insects can be

attracted through the creation o suitable

habitat (some insects can be scared away with

just the sounds o these animals). Bat and

nest boxes can be placed throughout the area

hopeully attracting animals to help with the

insect problem (plans or boxes can be ound on

the internet). An example o the impact animals

can have is the bat colony at Bracken Cave (near

Austin). This colony has around 20 million

Mexican-ree tailed bats living there and each

night they will eat 250 million tons o insects.

On a more local scale a modest colony o 150 big

brown bats can eat 33 million cucumber beetles.

Placing water in easy to access areas can help

recruit animals to the area. All water should be

kept clean and lled. For birds water should beplaced where predators cant attack the birds

when they come or water. Bats need open area

around water (bats drink while fying and dont

    stop to drink).

The habitat in which the insects live can

be modied to reduce their numbers. These

can oten be simple things. Keeping the area

around a house mowed and manicured can

help reduce some populations o insects such

as ticks and chiggers. Draining standing water

can reduce the area avorable or some insects

to breed. Watering correctly can prevent plants

rom becoming stressed and more susceptible

to insect inestations. By not killing all insects

a more stable environment can be created in

which predator and prey relationships can keep

    population levels under control.

Insects can be controlled using organicpesticides, animals, and the habitat around

them. A ew techniques were pointed out in

this article, but it should be a starting point or

control that doesnt just have to include bug

repellent and chemical spray. A small change in

the way things are managed can have a large

    impact on comort.

The lake is in great shape with waterup in the buck brush and lots o weedsthat went under water when the lakelled back up. There are some willowtrees out on the points in 6 to 8 t. owater. The pencil grass and pepper grassis everywhere and things look awesomeor the top water bite. But to say thingshave been dierent is to say the least. The cold ronts have just kept comingand coming keeping things stirred up.The hydrilla has been holding sh,when you can nd it. The top waterbite should have kicked o. That canbe a lot o un; early morning andlate aternoon; throwing baits like theStanley Ribbit rogs over the grass and

lily pads. It takes some skill to let thesh have the bait till you eel someweight on the line beore you set thehook. It will sure get the old heartpumping when you get into a mess o

them and wait or one to blow up onthe bait!

Another couple o old baits are theBuzzbait, Zara Spook and the Pop-Rthese can really get some action. Whenthe morning bite slows down it is timeto move out and start working thedeeper edges o the grass and structure.A ew baits that come to mind are theCarolina Rig, Texas Rig and Stanley Jig.These baits are great to work the edgesand structure. As the grass grows and iit starts to matt over the grass jig comesinto play. Punching a heavy Stanleygrass jig thru it can be a lot o work butwhen you get a bite it is usually a prettygood sh. There are not going to be a

lot o bites doing this so dont miss anyo them. This is what to look or as thesummer heats up.

The crappie shing has started tostabilize into the summer pattern over

structure and we been catching a loto good sh rom the pontoon. Theselittle critters are some o the best eatingthat I can think o. Grabbing a groupo riends and getting out on the watercan be so much un or everyone youngor old. For the ones that dont have aboat we can help you out. Weve got a 20oot Pontoon boat that can handle upto 8 anglers and can put you on somene crappie. Those that need shade, weve got that, a an and a changingroom with potty. No more pressure. Itsa great way to get away rom stress andhave tons o un. Take mom and pop orthe kids shing today. Ill try my best tospoil you!!

Here we are, the rst month o thesummer and ater the spring/winter/spring May we had, we are now let towonder is it really summer yet? I thatquestion is on our minds, it may alsobe conusing or the sh so i what youhave always done to catch them isntworking, keep in mind the patterns maybe a little slow to start this summer.

June is typically the rst ull montho top water action on Sam Rayburn, with the pepper grass to the top o thesurace and lily pads growing good, andall the fooded hay grass, it should be agreat start to the summer.

Lets start o about shing aroundthe pepper grass. Frogs are the rstbaits that pop into the mind o manyanglers. And yes, rogs are great aroundpepper grass but not the only thing youshould be thinking about; working a3/8 oz Cyclone spinnerbait on the edgeworks great too. Another thought is towork a V&M Chopstick over the top andlet it all down into the middle o thepepper grass, or try a TX rigged 10 inchworm and swim it around and over the

pepper grass. But, the rog, i you want,is good, and both Strike King and Sproare good choices.

Now, about the lily pads, rogs againare going to be the top choice or shingthe pads. I like to use a V&M buzz rogand work it close to the holes betweenthe pads. For the thickest parts o thepads it is best to stay with the StrikeKing or Spro hollow belly rogs. Otherthan a rog, another choice is to a fipa V&M Beaver or fipping a jig into thepads. You can also work a Zara Spookor Pop R around the edge o the pads.

On to the fooded hay grass... I reallydont think any o us have truly guredout how to catch them out o here yet,at least I havent, but I keep trying! The

best way I have ound is to start with aTexas rigged 10 inch worm and swim itover the top o the grass. You can alsofip a beaver style bait into it, or work arog over the top.

For deeper sh, which is really moremy style, you can start by working aStrike King 6XD crankbait on mainlake points rom 10 to 15 t o water,or work a Carolina rigged V&M trickworm in these same areas, and dontorget about using Texas rigged worms

too. Youll see results rom all o thesetechniques and baits!

    As the month progresses and

summer really sets in, we shouldstart seeing some school sh showingup. These sh might show up a littlelater than normal, again because wehave had such a cool spring, but theschooling action will start to show upeventually, and the middle o the daywill be the best time to look or them. When they do, youll want to be readywith a rod already rigged up with achrome or shad colored Strike King RedEye Shad (1/4 oz or oz), or clear orshad colored top water bait such as aSpook or Tiny Torpedo. I the schoolgoes down, crank down into it with a

Sexy Shad colored crankbait. You canalso drop a oz or oz slab spoon.Summer time is un time on the

lake, or shing, and playing. Lots oextra olks will be out and about bothin boats and on jet skis. Lets all makethis summer a sae one too by beingrespectul o each other on the lake andcareul in our navigation. Call me toget on the water in my boat and learntechniques, patterns, or just catch somesh at 409-579-4213, or email me at
