SOCIAL JUSTICE CORNER

The Apostles Fear the Storm

Before sailing across the Sea of Galilee, Jesus had been healing, teaching, ministering at home in Capernaum. When he and the Apostles took the fishing boat out across the water, they were going on to something new.

When we try something new, are we afraid? Do we ask Jesus to help us?

The crossing was stormy and dangerous. The Apostles quaked in their shoes. They were very afraid. They cried for Jesus to save them. When we are panicked and fearful, do we sometimes fear that Jesus is not there? What we need to realize is that Jesus is always and already there, giving direction to our way ahead.

Jesus quieted the story my his very word – “QUIET!”

And in the stillness, his peace infuses the boat and also our hearts. Let peace be in your heart today.

Twelfth Sunday in Ordinary Time

For the past 5 days, 300 youth and young adults attended the Diocesan Youth Retreat in South Lake Tahoe entitled, “The HUB: Be the Device”. Each day we listened to speakers, participated in various prayer experi-ences and small group discussions, celebrated the Mass, and much more! The inspiration of the retreat theme came from John 15:5, “I am the vine, you are the branches; if you remain in me and I in you, you will bear much fruit.” This verse is integral to our culture today. Jesus Christ invites us to remain connected to him, the vine. Oftentimes however, we remain more connected to our phones, computers, and various devices. Created in God’s image, humans desire to create, and technology is one example of human creation. It is important however, to be aware of how we apply technology to our daily lives. We can be fruitful in the ways we use it, such as sending kind emails to loved ones. On the other hand, technology can become our idol, and we end up spend hours glued to our computers meaninglessly surfing the internet. The retreat was an opportunity to “log off” from the busyness of life, and to “log in” to our faith. We reflected on God’s “profile”, and the “profiles” of our brothers and sisters. We then “edited” our profiles, and went to the Sacra-ment of Reconciliation. Lastly, we learned how to better “follow” Jesus, and committed to “retweeting” the values of faith, hope, and love to the world. Jesus Christ is the hub, and we are his devices. Thank you for your prayers, and please continue to pray for our young church. God bless, Klarissa dela Fuente

NAVAJO DRIVE

We are kicking off the Navajo drive this weekend. The needs are many in this large parish, Christ the King, in Shiprock, New Mexico. It is the poorest parish in the US and serves a very large area of the Navajo reservation. Pastor Fr. Patrick Wedeking has given us a wish list which includes irrigation for the grounds, lighting repair and payment of heating bill in winter. We have envelopes available at the display table in order for you to donate to any of the above wishes of Fr. Wedeking. Fr. Mike Car-son will be visiting and helping out at the parish in July. Thank you so much for your donations in the past and we hope to fulfill some of Fr. McGuire’s wishes.

Peacemakers

Franz Jaggerstatter A relative unknown, Franz Jaggerstatter led a rather routine life in his village of St. Radegund in Austria in the 1930’s. He was a man caught in a cruel trick of life – to choose be-tween his family and his conscience. He was ordered to join the Nazi armed forces but refused because he thought the Nazis were evil and killing was wrong. He could have agreed to serve and his family would have been fine. But as it was, he refused to join and he was ultimately killed for his beliefs. His family suffered without a husband and father.

In his “statement of position” he wrote – “The true Christian is to be recognized more in works and deeds than in speech. The surest mark of all is found in deeds showing love of neighbor. To do unto one’s neighbor what one would desire for oneself is more than merely not doing to others what one would not want done to oneself. Let us love our enemies, bless those who curse us, pray for those who persecute us. For love will conquer and will endure for all eternity. And happy are they who live and die for God’s love.” Franz gave his life in oppo-sition to war. He wanted peace with all his heart and died because of his actions. Taken from A Passion for Life, by Joan Chittister How can we, in our daily lives, choose peace? When a decision needs to be made, how do we listen to Christ’s teachings and to our conscience?
