8/229:00PM RFK in the Land of Apartheid

Using never before seen archivalfootage, and interviews in SouthAfrica and the U.S., the film tellsthe story of Robert Kennedy's1966 visit to South Africa duringthe worst years of Apartheid, andthe connections between thestruggle for racial justice in theUnited States and South Africa.

8/307:00PM POV: Armadillo In 2009, Janus Metz and cameramanLars Skree accompanied a platoon ofDanish soldiers to Armadillo, a combatoperations base in southernAfghanistan. For six months, oftenwhile under fire, they captured thelives of the young soldiers fighting theTaliban in a hostile and confusing en-vironment, where official rhetoricabout helping civilians too often metthe unforgiving reality of being a for-eign occupier. Winner of the Critics’Week Grand Prix at Cannes, “Ar-madillo” is one of the most dramaticand candid accounts of combat tocome out of Afghanistan.

Night

9:00PMPOV: Steam of Life

From a land of long, dark winters

comes “Steam of Life,” a moody,

comic and moving study of Finnish

men, as framed by the national

obsession with the sauna. There,

they come together to sweat out

not only the grime of contempo-

rary life, but also their grief, hopes,

joys and memories. Beautifully

and hauntingly shot, the acclaimed

film provides a surprising glimpse

into the lives of Finnish men and a

remarkable depiction of the trou-

bled and often reticent hearts of

contemporary Western men.

7:00PM Nature: Black Mamba

8:00PMNOVA: Rat Attack

Every 48 years, the inhabitants of

the remote Indian state of Mizo-

ram suffer a horrendous ordeal

known locally as mautam. An in-

digenous species of bamboo,

blanketing 30 percent of Mizo-

ram's 8,100 square miles, blooms

once every half-century, spurring

an explosion in the rat population

that feeds off the bamboo's fruit.

The rats run amok, destroying

crops and precipitating a crippling

famine throughout Mizoram.

NOVA follows this gripping tale of

nature's capacity to engender

human suffering and investigates

the botanical mystery of why the

bamboo flowers with clockwork

precision every half-century

Killer Stress:

A National Geographic Special

Stress. It's always been there to

save our lives. It's what made us

run from predators and enabled us

to take down prey. But today, hu-

mans are turning on that same

stress response to deal with 30-

year mortgages, difficult bosses,

teenagers and traffic jams. Some

of us are wallowing in corrosive

hormones; for the first time, scien-

tists can reveal just how measura-

ble and dangerous that exposure

can be. MacArthur "Genius Grant"

Africa and the U.S., the film tells

1966 visit to South Africa during

the worst years of Apartheid, and

the connections between the

struggle for racial justice in the

History Detectives

In this episode, the images and

the words on this poster suggest a

battle is brewing: a clenched fist,

police described as “pigs.” Who

made this poster and why? Then,

was this woodcarving of a mouth

and chin once part of the Andrew

Jackson figurehead affixed to the

bow of the USS Constitution? And,

how does this basket connect us

to a woman congress honored as

a heroine of the Modoc Indian

Wars?

8:00PM NOVA:

Hunting the Hidden Dimensions

What do movie special effects, the

stock market, heart attacks and

the rings of Saturn have in com-

mon? They're all connected by a

revolutionary new branch of math

called fractals, which has changed

the way we see the world and

opened up a vast new territory to

scientific analysis and understand-

ing. NOVA tells the dramatic story

of a group of pioneering mathe-

maticians who developed fractals

from a curiosity that few took seri-

ously to an approach that is touch-

ing nearly every branch of

understanding — including what

happened after the Big Bang and

the ultimate fate of our universe.

9:00PM Earth: The Operator’s Manual

An operators’ manual helps keep

your car or computer running at

peak performance. Earth science

can do the same for the planet.

Join geologist Richard Alley as he

travels the world, from New

Zealand to China, Brazil, Spain

and Morocco with stops in New

Orleans, Texas and military bases

in California. This accurate, under-

standable and upbeat report on

the interconnected stories of hu-

mans and fossil fuels, Earth’s cli-

mate history and our future energy

options will leave you amazed at

the beauty and bounty of the

planet, inspired by human ingenu-

ity, and optimistic about the future.

7:00PM Nature: Is that Skunk?

It's a familiar but mysterious crea-

ture in woods and neighborhoods

all across America. Its infamous

weapon is one of the most awful

scents in all of nature. Now, in-

trepid researchers and camera-

men track skunks day and night

across California, New Mexico,

Oklahoma, Ohio, even Martha's

Vineyard, uncovering how they

hunt, forage, mate and raise

amazingly cute babies - all the

things they're up to when they're

not spraying the local dog. And

yes, the remarkable secrets of that

stink will be revealed!

9:00PM Objects and Memory

OBJECTS AND MEMORY exam-

ines the response to items recov-

ered or offered after 9/11 and

other national tragedies. The film

uses objects and accounts of peo-

ple whose lives were affected, in-

terviews with historians and

poignant, powerful photographic

images. Why do people value ob-

jects? What is it about a piece of

paper, a chunk of metal or a small

coin that provokes such powerful

memories? Without the objects,

the stories would lack vibrancy;

without the stories, the objects

would lack significance. Taken to-

gether, images of these objects,

the memories they evoke and the

accounts of their collection lead

viewers on a path where the com-

monplace is transformed into the

remarkable and the stuff of history

is highly personalized. The pro-

gram, set to the music of Philip

Glass, is narrated by Frank Lan-

gella.

9:00PM POV: Armadillo

In 2009, Janus Metz and camera-

man Lars Skree accompanied a

platoon of Danish soldiers to Ar-

madillo, a combat operations base

in southern Afghanistan. For six

months, often while under fire,

they captured the lives of the

young soldiers fighting the Taliban

in a hostile and confusing environ-

ment, where official rhetoric about

helping civilians too often met the

unforgiving reality of being a for-

eign occupier. Winner of the Crit-

ics’ Week Grand Prix at Cannes,

“Armadillo” is one of the most dra-

matic and candid accounts of

combat to come out of

Afghanistan.

NOVA:

Becoming Human

‘First Steps’

The first episode explores fresh

clues about our earliest ancestors

in Africa, including the stunningly

complete fossil nicknamed "Lucy's

Child." These three-million-year-

old bones from Ethiopia reveal hu-

manity's oldest and most telltale

trait - upright walking, rather than

a big brain. Part 1 of 3

8:00PM NOVA: Becoming Human

‘Birth of Humanity’

The second program tackles the

mysteries of how our ancestors

managed to survive in a savannah

teeming with vicious predators,

and when and why we first left our

African cradle to colonize every

corner of the earth. Part 2 of 3.

9:00PM NOVA: Becoming Human ‘Last

Human Standing’

In the final program, NOVA probes

a wave of dramatic new evidence,

based partly on cutting-edge DNA

analysis, that reveals new insights

into how we became today’s cre-

ative and “behaviorally modern”

humans and what really happened

to the enigmatic Neanderthals who

faded into extinction. Part 3 of 3.

On June 23, 25 and 26, The Art and Antiques Auction

was live on KCOS-TV. The types of art ranges from

acrylic, photography, sculptures and prints, to name a

few. There were also unique antiques and furniture.

Year after year, this event allows us the opportunity to

continue providing quality programing to El Paso and

southern New Mexico. Our success depends on tal-

ented and generous local artists who donate their art to

support their public television station.

Our very special thanks to:
