Our Programs

Elementary SchoolKCS Elementary enrolls students from kindergarten to grade seven. Our kindergarten has both full-time and half-time program options.Talented and experienced Christian educators provide a nurturing learning environment for our elementary students. Teachers strive to understand and meet the unique needs of each child—from gifted children to those with special needs. And they bring a Christian perspective into all their teaching.

High SchoolKamloops Christian School offers a unique and enriching high school experience for students in grades eight through 12. Our learning program follows—and extends— the BC curriculum. In addition, the students enjoy a range of unique electives such as inter- national missions, local outreach and worship arts.

Distance LearningCourses that KCS does not offer are often available through distance/online learning. When students encounter scheduling clashes or require specialized electives, KCS partners with online schools to meet the unique learning needs of individual students. KCS students in online courses enjoy flexibility and accountability in a supportive environment.

Homeschool ProgramKCS provides a program of studies through our Homeschool Coordinator. Families who choose to homeschool their children are able to register with KCS to meet the Ministry of Education requirements. Our homeschool coordinator is available as a resource person and happy to assist families as needed.

Please note: Fees for Daycare, Preschool and Junior Kindergarten are separate from the Elementary

and High School.

Daycare & PreschoolKCS partners with Kamloops Christian Daycare, a “home-away-from-home” loving childcare environment for infants to five years. Our vibrant preschool programs help prepare children for their school years. An upbeat out-of-school program is also offered for elementary students to age 12. Each level is designed to enhance the child’s emotional, psychological, learning, and social development. As a large licensed group facility, the KC Daycare meets and exceeds BC government regulatory standards.

Junior KindergartenKCS offers Junior Kindergarten. This unique offering provides the opportunity to assess your child’s abilities. After Junior Kindergarten, children may be placed either in kindergarten or grade one, depending on their skill level. “Holding a child back” is no longer necessary… Junior K is a new positive option open to all four and five year olds.

Outward FocusGod calls us, as Christians, to be the hands and feet of Christ. Our outward focus—through our outreach programs and initiatives—provides students with practical experience. Our participation in evangelism efforts, ministry opportunities and work projects reflect the compassion of Jesus to the people around us. Whether we are building a school for impoverished children in Guatemala, or serving food to our street neighbours in Kamloops, our focus is always to show the love of Christ in tangible ways.Kamloops Christian School has enjoyed a long and fruitful partnership with Impact Ministries, an organization that ministers to indigenous people in Guatemala. For many years, KCS high school students—usually grade 10s—have gone to Guatemala to serve with Impact. We work alongside the Guatemalan people to build school and church facilities, provide children’s ministries and worship God together as one community. Students often say it is a stretching experience to participate in this program, but well worth it! They grow spiritually and emotionally as they allow the Lord to take them out of their comfort zone and serve Him selflessly.Two electives, called Local Outreach and Living for the King, offer our high school students a chance to minister to people in a local environment. Students learn to recognize the significant challenges and needs of people in our own backyard and they learn ways to respectfully and practically extend God’s love to them. We have served with New Life Mission as well as provided meals to street neighbours in the Vancouver Downtown Eastside.

International StudentsStudents from a variety of countries attend KCS for short- or long-term stays. Students benefit from English language instruction through immersion and ESL training from qualified instructors. They also experience Canadian culture in one of the most beautiful regions in Canada. Kamloops Christian School provides our guest students with a safe and welcoming environment. International students enjoy friendly, social interaction with English speaking adults and peers— making lasting friendships that they carry back home.

InclusionAt KCS, we believe every child is endowed with God given value and abilities. It’s our job, as Christian professional educators, to help all of our students discover their unique attributes and reach their potential in all areas of life. We use a team approach when supporting children with special needs. Our teams can consist of parents, teachers, education assistants, resource room instructors, and outside specialists such as doctors or counselors.

1985 brings back a lot of memories…Magnum P.I. filled TV screens, Brian Mulroney was Prime Minister and big hair and leg warmers were the fashion. Although some of these are better left in the recesses of time, the creation of Kamloops Christian School marks 1985 as a significant year for Christian parents and students in Kamloops. Over the years that followed, KCS has blessed hundreds of young people with the opportunity to learn in an environment where their Christian faith is nurtured and encouraged. The school—once a dream of six local churches (Calvary Community, Evangelical Free, Full Gospel, Gateway City, Sahali Fellowship and Southwest Community)—now boasts more than a quarter century of government accredited education and deep roots in the Kamloops community. KCS began classes in 1985 at what is now the Tk’emlups te Secwepemc administration building (formerly the Kamloops Indian Band Residential School) with Principal Rudy Wiebe at the helm. After two years, the school relocated to Kamloops Alliance Church. In 1988, under the direction of Principal Bob Adams, KCS students and staff moved to Cottonwood Community Center. Until 1990, grade 10 was the highest grade offered by KCS. That year, the school sent the first group of grade 10 students to Guatemala. Bob Adams led the missions team on what became a life changing experience for all. Upon their return to Kamloops, all the grade 10 students committed to returning to KCS the next year and the Board of Directors decided KCS would expand to offer grades 11 and 12. In 1993, these students became the first high school graduates of KCS.

Inspired by Bob Adams, Les Peters, who was already on staff as Vice-Principal, became the next principal of KCS. “It was a blessing to work under the direction of Bob Adams and later for one year under Dean Whiteway (CEO),” remembers Mr. Peters. “These two men saw into my heart. I give thanks to God for their profound effect on my life and for their vision of KCS.” Mr. Peters served as principal until he and his wife, Rita, relocated to Tactic, Guatemala. There, they established Impact Ministries—a not for profit organization that cares for and provides educational opportunities to impoverished children in rural Guatemala. Kamloops Christian School continues to send missions teams to serve with Impact Ministries annually. The groups work with the Peters to improve schools and show God’s love in practical ways to the Guatemalan people. In 1991, the school experienced a boost in enrolment and support when Thompson Valley Christian School, also operating out of the Cottonwood Center, amalgamated with KCS. Joe Koziol, principal of the Bible Truth sponsored school recalls the transition, “Maybe it was the heart of God for that to happen because it was a smooth transition. It brought the Christian community closer together.” Two years later, the school became so large that it purchased the unused North Kamloops Elementary School on Willow Avenue. After renovations the elementary grades moved over while high school remained at the Cottonwood Center. Shortly after that, the contract with the Cottonwood Center ended and the entire KCS population congregated on the Willow campus.

History

The new millennium would bring a change of scenery for KCS when it would once again inhabit Cottonwood Center—this time, as the owner. In 2003, KCS entered into an agreement with the City of Kamloops to trade Willow Campus for the Cottonwood Center and $1.00. George Duerksen, Chair of the KCS Board at the time, remembers the exchange, “This deal was nothing short of a miracle. We went from having five acres to seven acres, and our school space tripled in size.”“Over the years, Kamloops Christian School has overcome various challenges but also experienced many blessings. We have been blessed by the leaders, families and churches that have supported the school and contributed greatly to our ability to provide quality Christian education,” says Peter Coxon, parent and KCS Board Chair from 1995– 1997 and 2005–2012. “Our teachers and staff create a culture at KCS that is perceptibly positive, nurturing and Christ-centred. Our students are exceptional young people whose energy, sense of fun and personal achievements inspire us to look to the future of KCS with high expectations.”While Kamloops Christian School has changed dramatically since our early days, one thing remains the same—our focus on providing exceptional Christian education in a nurturing environment. We have much to be thankful for and so much to look forward to.

Our TeachersAll of our teachers are professing and actively practicing Christians. They agree with, and live our school’s purposes and philosophy. Each teacher is fully qualified and is certified to teach by the BC Ministry of Education. Several of our teachers hold or are working on Masters degrees.Perhaps most importantly, KCS teachers love kids, and it shows! They can regularly be found spending after-school time with students who need extra help or

attending meetings with outside professionals to better understand the special needs of one of “their” kids. They take the time to establish open communication with parents to keep them informed and equipped to support their children’s success in school. Our low teacher to children ratio means smaller class sizes, and that means students get the important attention they deserve. We are proud of the calibre of our staff. We know you’ll appreciate them too!

Leadership TeamThe KCS leadership team works to ensure that we are achieving our school mission and that we are meeting all regulatory requirements. School maintenance and decisions regarding administration are included in the Team’s mandate. Leadership is accountable to the KCS Board.

KCS Board of DirectorsThe KCS Board is mostly comprised of parents of KCS students. The Board makes strategic and long-term goal decisions for the Kamloops Christian School Association.

KCS AssociationThe KCS Association (KCSA) is made up of parents, grandparents, local church leaders, alumni, and others who support our aims. All Christians, who are 19 or older, are welcome to join the KCSA. Only members can vote at general meetings or serve on the school board. Annual membership is $10 per person.

KCS Parent Action CommitteeThe PAC get together monthly to discuss new and innovative ways to save and raise money for “extras” at the school. Every parent is welcome to join!

Parent Participation ProgramWe pride ourselves on being an independent school that partners with parents. We love working together and know that many hands make light work. Each one of us has God-given talents that are of benefit to our school in some way. We’re proud to provide students with Hot Lunch Programs, Scholastic Book Club, and many more “extras” thanks to our parent volunteers. At KCS, each parent is expected to volunteer 20 hours over the school year, or pay $200 in lieu.

Supportive relationships Relationships are important in education. At KCS, we believe that God-honouring relationships enhance learning and are the foundation of a healthy school culture. Here are some significant kinds of relationships found in our school… Each individual—student, staff member, or parent—can have a personal, saving relationship with God through Jesus Christ. We strive to disciple each student to make or develop that connection. Our teachers strive for positive, healthy relationships with their students. They take a sincere interest in the kids they teach, and they commit to pray for them. In other words, our students are known and loved by caring, Christian adults. We aim to help students relate respectfully to others: to authority, parents, elders, peers, and property. Through proactive training and mentoring, we teach kids how to demonstrate Christian character qualities. We value partnership with parents/guardians. We help them feel connected to their children’s teachers and education through good communication and parental involvement. We believe any Christian education is a partnership between a child’s family, school, and the church. For this reason we strive to establish and maintain partnering relations with Kamloops Christian churches.

Money MattersKCS Tuition FeesUnique to KCS is our family friendly pricing. We are very proud to offer rates that make it affordable for multi-child families to attend. Also, a portion of tuition is receipted as a charitable donation. See the KCS Accounting Department for current tuition fees.

School Supply FeesFor elementary students, a one-time, per child school supply fee is paid at the beginning of the year. We order our supplies in bulk to save you money. For high school students a list of supplies that your teen will need is sent out before the start of the school year.

First Time Families DiscountIf you are a first-time family, we are pleased to offer you a 20% discount on tuition for your first year at KCS, and a 10% discount for your second year tuition. If you were referred to KCS by a KCS family, that family will receive one month free tuition if you enroll.

KCS Bursary ProgramOur school provides tuition bursaries to families who are not financially able to pay full tuition fees. We confidentially respect your situation and, if your family qualifies, will provide up to 40% of the tuition costs, depending on your financial need. Please ask!

Bus ProgramA bus service is available. It is provided in partner-ship with another private school. Please ask!

Community Rental SpaceKCS provides leased office space to non-profit groups, as well as gymnasium and theatre rentals. Please ask and let others know.

Support KCSMost funds for the operation of our school (staff salaries, learning resources, professional development, utilities, office supplies, etc.) come from two sources:• Government grants: Like other independent

schools, KCS receives grants from the BC Ministry of Education to cover approximately half of our operating costs.

• Tuition paid by parents covers the remaining operating expenses.

When it comes to capital costs (e.g. building expenses and playground facilities) KCS receives no government funding. We rely on donations from our supporters. If you love the mission of KCS and feel led to support us financially, please consider donating. Your donations are tax deductible and will be receipted.
