FOREWORD FROM KAHC

‘CAN DO’ SPIRIT OF KENYA IS VERY MUCH ALIVEKaribu – Welcome – to the 11th edition of the Kenya

Association of Hotelkeepers and Caterers (KAHC) Hotel and Restaurant Guide.

I was watching the 2014 Chicago Marathon as I thought about what to include in this foreword to the guide. What dawned on me is that we have so many excellent stories about Kenya that we can share with the world. At the end of the marathon, Kenya had claimed a clean sweep of the men’s top positions while Kenya’s defending woman champion had successfully retained her title. A few weeks prior to that, another young Kenyan smashed the world record at the Berlin Marathon while his compatriot gave chase to take second place.

The fact that Kenya’s tourism was facing unprecedented challenges did not dampen the winning spirit of Kenyans from all walks of life. This story was repeated in several other world capitals such as London, Boston and Tokyo.

That is why measures have been put in place at national level to alleviate the challenges faced in 2014 and to address the revival of Kenya’s tourism sector.

One of the measures was the launch of the #whyilovekenya, a campaign aimed at rallying tourists, celebrities, corporate bodies, public and private sector, and friends of the tourism sector to tell

the world about the uniqueness of the country and how tourism business activities are going.

The tourism industry is slowly getting back on its feet and has recovered ground in certain areas in the latter part of 2014. This year, the industry is optimistic it can continue the recovery, particularly at the Coast Region, which carries a large capacity in terms of accommodation and other tourism investments.

Kenya has shown itself to be the country of choice for tourism, scooping a number of awards at the recent World Travel Awards including Best Tourism Board in Africa, Best Eco Lodge and Best Eco Hotel.

Our role as a member association with a strict code of ethics continues to be felt in all spheres. We have seen our membership grow and we take this opportunity to welcome those who are making their first appearance in the guide.

The Kenya Hotel & Restaurant Guide continues to highlight the best of the best.

KTB FOREWORD

KENYAN TOURISM IS ALIVE AND WELLJambo! It has been a challenging time for tourism

in Kenya; but despite this, our tourism sector has remained resilient. It is uplifting that the Kenya Tourism Board (KTB), for the third year running, has been named as Africa’s Leading Tourism Board by World Travel Awards 2014. This is great recognition as we continue to work tirelessly to tell the world of the amazing tourism products and accommodation our country has to offer.

Tourism has remained resilient in spite of travel advisories from key source markets. The industry continues to work together to reassure the world that Kenya is safe and open for business.

TEMBEA KENYA

Riding on Kenya’s pride as a world-leading safari destination, the ‘Tembea Kenya’ campaign was launched to encourage the domestic market to travel and get to know their country. To complement this, KTB together with the private sector initiated the ‘Why I Love Kenya’ campaign, which has won the hearts of many visitors to Kenya, who have continued to testify to the rich experience of Kenya’s tourism products. Among those who have endorsed this is Sir Richard Branson, who described Kenya as ‘a lovely country to visit’.

KTB hosted the fourth edition of the Magical Kenya Travel Expo (MKTE), in which we partnered with the industry to showcase some of our county’s unique attractions to hosted buyers from various countries.

KTB has partnered with various countries this year to showcase the unique products on offer. One of the major partnerships was with Taita Taveta County to commemorate 100 years since the start of the First World War. Various events were hosted during the year, with more expected this year, showcasing battle-field tourism. This is a new and unique product which we are continuing to highlight.

Kenya has continued to attract both local and international investors in the hospitality industry, with new hotels having been opened and others in various stages of completion.

These units have continued to enhance Kenya’s presence on the tourism map, offering the best in Kenyan hospitality.

Finally, I welcome you to this edition of the KAHC Guide, in which you can sample our up-to-standard hotels, tented camps, lodges and other facilities that will leave you with a desire to ‘Tembea Kenya’.

INTRODUCTION

FIRST-RATE HOSPITALITY SECTOR IS A SOURCE OF PRIDEWith a membership of nearly 200 hotels, camps

and lodges, the Kenya Association of Hotel-keepers & Caterers (KAHC) plays an important role in the promotion and maintenance of the nation’s award-winning tourism industry.

The hospitality industry in any country can prove challenging at times, and Kenya is no exception. However, this particular sector continues to strive and is determined to succeed. New hotels are opening around the country and the prevailing message is that Kenya is a beautiful – and safe – place to visit.

With unparalleled experiences, unforgettable safaris and wonderful locations, Kenya’s hospitality industry has a lot to offer. And the industry is keen to share this with both local and

international visitors by offering something to suit every taste and budget.

HIGH STANDARDS

Tourism is the country’s second-largest source of foreign exchange revenue; and the tourism industry has the full atten-tion of the Kenyan government, while the KAHC prides itself on the high standards being achieved by its large membership.

In addition to the many hotels, lodges and camps that are such a source of pride for Kenya, the KAHC also includes among its members a significant number of restaurants and country clubs, all working equally hard to raise the profile and status of this wonderful country.

Introduction

Page 10: Kenya Hotel & Restaurant Guide 2015

WORLD-CLASS CITY WITH MATCHLESS HOSPITALITYNairobi is the fast-paced commercial and cultural

hub of East Africa, a regional home for many international bodies and the start and finish point for almost all safaris in Kenya. It is also a continental hub for airlines and the perfect location for big interna-tional gatherings.

The Kenyan capital is full of surprises and hidden delights – a city that never sleeps. With its truly great food and pulsating nightlife, Nairobi is one of those towns where the phrase ‘never a dull moment’ is properly earned.

The city is home to a population of more than 3 million, including not only the 42 ethnic groups of Kenya but also people from across Africa and the rest of world.

To match its undoubted popularity and to confirm the warmness of its welcome, Nairobi is blessed with a range of hotels to suit all budgets, tastes and locations. It is a list that continues to grow year on year, with even more new properties on the drawing board.

Inspired in many ways by its position as one of Africa’s leading conference venues, Nairobi can rightly claim to have the ideal size and type of hotel for every visitor and for every event. And this choice is not limited to just one part of the city. In fact, the choice of venues can be found in four main areas.

Hotels located in or near the central business district include the Serena, Hilton, Nairobi Safari Club, The Norfolk, Inter-Continental and Laico Regency.

NAIROBI

Westlands, with its upmarket shops, fashionable bars and chic restaurants, is a favourite with business visitors, who can choose from the Jacaranda, Sankara and Southern Sun hotels, plus the imposing pink-fronted Villa Rosa Kempinski in Chiromo. Mean-while, the new 101-room Dusit D2, being built just off Riverside Drive, could also be included in this group.

BUSINESS

Nairobi’s newest business district, Upper Hill, is home to the Crowne Plaza and the new 256-room Radisson Blu Nairobi.

Over in Gigiri, close to the United Nations regional headquarters, is Tribe, which from a location perspective is out on its own but perfect for shopping at The Village Market.

Karen is a peaceful alternative for both business and leisure visi-tors. The opening of the boutique 45-room Hemingways Nairobi has provided this leafy suburb with a classy new property.

In addition to its role as a commercial centre, Nairobi is the hub point for most safaris. Many of these safari visitors are looking for smart yet mid-range properties close to the airport, and this requirement is admirably met by Panari, Ole-Sereni, The Boma, Boma Inn and Eka Hotel. This mid-range category also includes the Best Western Premier in Hurlingham.

Nairobi is a city that does not rest on its laurels, and visitors can expect to see more new hotels – some conceived and estab-lished by the industry’s top players – coming on stream in 2015 and 2016.

KENYA COAST

SO MANY GREAT PLACES TO STAY, SO MANY FUN THINGS TO DOThe 536 km long coast of Kenya features some of

Africa’s finest beaches, a wealth of treasures and some of the continent’s most exquisite ocean-front hotels.

What’s more, the coast-based hoteliers, who run proper-ties stretching from cultured Lamu in the north to hideaway Msambweni in the south, can’t wait to extend a warm welcome to guests in 2015.

The main gateway to the Kenyan coast is Mombasa’s Moi Inter-national Airport, but there are also airports and airstrips in Lamu, Malindi and Ukunda (for Diani Beach), all with connections from Nairobi’s Jomo Kenyatta and Wilson airports.

Traditionally, Mombasa has handled mostly direct air charters from Europe, but this has changed in recent times, with a greater emphasis on scheduled operations by carriers such as Kenya Airways and by Ethiopian Airlines and Turkish Airlines. Other, more independently minded travellers opt to fly to Nairobi and connect with domestic services to Lamu, Malindi or Ukunda. This can be more expensive, but can be easier once at the coast owing to the shorter journey times compared with flying into Mombasa.

The coast, of course, is also a favourite playground for increas-ingly affluent upcountry Kenyans, especially during peak holiday seasons such as Christmas and Easter, and for those attending conferences and seminars. Many coast hotels are geared specifically to handling such visitors with impressive conference facilities.

The Kenya coast also continues to surprise and delight with a sprinkling of new boutique properties to add to the already eclectic selection of hotels catering for all tastes and budgets.

There are four main resort areas: north Mombasa, south Mombasa, Malindi and Watamu, with perhaps Kilifi and Lamu as associate members of this rather select group. Each has its own attractions and reasons to visit:

MOMBASA (NORTH COAST):

This mature tourism area contains Nyali, Bamburi, Shanzu and goes all the way up to Mtwapa, with its scenic creek dotted with extravagant villas and elegant restaurants. This is the coast’s most heavily developed area, containing some of its longest estab-lished and best known hotels.

MOMBASA (SOUTH COAST):

Less developed than the north coast, harder to access but more than worth the effort in getting to the main resort at Diani. There are still some challenges associated with the Likoni ferry, which travellers must use to get from the airport to the south coast, but a new by-pass road is planned. There is also the option of flying into the Ukunda airstrip. Diani’s magnificent soft sand beach is both safe and relaxed and the strip has some good shops and mini-malls, an interesting choice of eateries and a wide selection of bars and nightspots.

MALINDI AND LAMU:

Popular with Italians, Malindi remains one of the coast’s most vibrant resorts and certainly one of its most elegant. Led by recent huge property investments from Flavio Briatore, the Italian billionaire, Malindi is a breezy mix of Swahili charm and jet-set sophistication.

Malindi awaits an expansion of its airport, which currently handles only local flights, and the dream of many is direct and non-stop flights to Europe – in particular to Italy.

Further north, the island of Lamu is a delightfully untouched Unesco World Heritage Site, offering a glimpse of an earlier age, with donkeys replacing motorised transport.

WATAMU/KILIFI:

Close to Malindi Airport is Watamu, a resort that combines one of Africa’s best beaches with an easy-going atmosphere. Watamu is home to a large and growing expatriate population who have built properties in the town. Good restaurants – some of them right on the beach – are among the many attractions of Watamu.

To the south is Kilifi, largely undiscovered by foreign visitors; a truly wonderful coastal town with a wide and unspoilt creek.

In sum, the Kenya coast offers terrific value, accommodation of every kind, plenty to see and do, delicious ocean-fresh seafood, great service, warm seas, year-round sunshine and a winning smile on just about everyone’s face. What more could anyone want in 2015?

ATUA ENKOP AFRICA

EXCLUSIVE CAMPS OFFER ULTIMATE IN LUXURYAtua Enkop Africa, means ‘from the earth’ or more

broadly ‘out of Africa’ in Maa, the language of the Maasai and this uniquely African quality is reflected in the warmth of the hospitality and luxurious ambience of its camps.

The Atua Enkop Africa collection is made up of four small and exclusive camps located in three of Kenya’s prime game viewing areas: the Masai Mara and Samburu national reserves and Lake Nakuru.

Atua Enkop Africa was formed in 2006 by people who wanted to provide that once-in-a-lifetime experience to visitors seeking a first-rate safari experience in a natural wild environment, while enjoying luxurious and comfortable accommodation with unparalleled service, fine cuisine and highly experienced guiding.

The four camps are:

Elephant Bedroom Camp: With 12 spacious tents (four tents with king-sized double beds, eight tents with queen-sized twin beds) located right alongside the Ewaso Nyiro river in Samburu National Reserve.

Mbweha Camp: Set in the Congreve Conservancy, bordering Lake Nakuru National Park. There are 10 cottages comprising two family cottages (one with a queen-sized bed and two single beds), four double-bed cottages and four twin-bed cottages.

Tipilikwani (Masai Mara): With 20 luxury tents (two family tents each comprising two adjoining tents, one with king-sized bed, the other with two queen-sized beds; four tents with king-

sized double beds; 12 tents with queen-sized twin beds). The family tents have a stand-alone bathtub in addition to showers.

Mara Ngenche (Masai Mara): Made up of 10 luxury tents – seven double and three twin – with en-suite bathrooms located at the confluence of the Mara and Talek rivers, offering wonderful views of both.

Each camp is perfectly located to ensure an unforgettable game viewing experience. They are unfenced and wild animals have “right of way” on trails that were exclusively theirs for centuries before the camps were erected. Thus, all four camps provide the ultimate bush experience, while security and safety remain of paramount importance.

USERS’ GUIDEUsing the Kenya Hotel, Restaurant & Entertain-

ment Guide has just got even easier. Here is the new easy-to-follow list of symbols to denote the various key facilities available at the properties featuring in this guide.

The purpose of these icons is so that users can see, at a glance, the main services on offer. For a more in-depth look at an individual hotel, resort, lodge, camp or club there is also a short write-up about the property and a list of its unique features.

The idea is that readers can quickly and efficiently identify where each property is located, find up-to-date contact details and differentiate easily between KAHC members. Facilities highlighted are those currently available to guests.

ECOTOURISM

Some of the hotels, lodges and camps listed in this guide have official eco-ratings from Ecotourism Kenya with an appropriate symbol to denote the property’s exact eco-classification. These properties are recognised for best practices in environmental conversation, sustainable resource utilisation and socio-economic invest-ment. Properties are rated gold, silver or bronze.

Ecotourism Kenya members are also given the appropriate logo to denote that the owners of these properties subscribe to the general environmental aims and objectives of the association, but may not have an official eco-rating yet.

GOLD-RATED – Gold Eco-rating is an indicator that a facility has achieved superior and replicable levels of excellence in

responsible resource use, environmental conservation and socio-economic investments.

SILVER-RATED – Silver Eco-rating demonstrates a move towards excellence; awarded to facilities that show innovations

in responsible resource use, environmental conservation and social-economic investment.

BRONZE-RATED – Bronze Eco-rating is the entry level and demonstrates a facility’s awareness and commitment to envi-

ronmental conservation, responsible resource use and socio-economic investment.
