Pius X Catholic High School Newsletter November 2018 | V. 124 Pius X Catholic High School | 6000 A Street | Lincoln, NE 68510 | (402) 488-0931 | PiusX.net | Restore All Things In Christ The pilgrims began building shelters. Unprepared for the harsh New England winter, nearly half of the people died before spring. Yet, persevering in prayer, and assisted by the Wampanoag Indians, they reaped a bountiful harvest the following summer. The grateful pilgrims declared a three-day feast, starting on December 13, 1621, to thank God and to celebrate with their Indian friends. While this was not the first Thanksgiving in America, it was America’s first Thanksgiving Festival. Thanksgiving Day affords us one day each year to gather in gratitude to our merciful Lord. Yet, each day offers an opportunity to look for the many gifts in our lives with appreciation. It is too easy to live shrouded in negative events and thoughts, while overlooking the many beautiful, daily blessings in our lives and to offer a prayer of thanks. Psalm 107: 8-9 expresses, “Oh that men would give thanks to the Lord for His goodness, and for His wonderful works to the children of men! For He satisfies the longing soul, and fills the hungry soul with goodness.” Daily gratitude uplifts our hearts and creates a life of peace, joy and contentment. It is needed in this world torn apart by war, hate, illness and natural disaster. That attitude of gratitude refocuses our life to God. Take the opportunity to look for the daily miracles that we too often attribute to luck. In fact, they are our steadfast Lord working in our lives. For me, there is gratitude beyond measure for the opportunity to work and interact with your children, the incredible students of Pius X High School. Every day, yes every day, these students are reaching out in love to help each other, our community and the world. Just a few examples of their regard for others and true desire to make a positive difference: • The ambassadors are going to the grade schools to have lunch with eighth graders and introduce them to Pius X. • Academically gifted students are teaming up with those who struggle to help them reach their goals. • Teachers sense when students are having difficulties and devise ways to help them overcome. • The Pro-Life Club recently prayed together at Planned Parenthood for an end to abortion. • Soon, we will commence a school-wide effort to collect food to fill Lincoln’s pantries and feed those who are hungry throughout the winter. • In the aftermath of Hurricane Michael, our students will pray for and help those whose lives have been affected by the devastation. On Thanksgiving Day and every day, may our hearts be filled with gratefulness to God for His goodness and faithfulness to us. I am thankful for you, dear parents. From Pius X High School Librarian, Erin WillisWriting through Reading Reading and writing are complementary processes that foster critical thinking and help us understand and express complex emotions. It is not easy for students to learn out how to get ideas down on paper in a way that clearly conveys what they are thinking, but reading a variety of books can help them understand and commu-nicate thoughts in meaningful ways. In her December 16, 1929 letter to an aspiring 15-year-old writer, Mari Sandoz gives the following advice: “Only a genius could paint a picture worthy a place in a good gallery, compose a work worth a listener, or write a novel worth printing at fifteen. All the rest of us have to learn something of life, and a great deal of the special craft of our chosen art before we can hope to achieve any distinction in it at all… I suggest that you learn much of a great many things, for the whole of human endeavor is the sourcebook of fiction; and read a great deal, both for vicarious experience in life and for the development of a sense of form and the maturing of your taste. Read everything, from the papers to the great books, and learn why your weekly magazines are weeklies, and why Tolstoy and Shakespeare and the Old Testament writers are of all time.”

The Pius X Library will highlight two opportunities for young writers in November: • “Letters About Literature” is student writing competition through the Library of Congress Center for the Book. This national writing competition encourages students to write a reflective letter to an author – living or dead – explaining how the author’s work changed the student’s view of him or herself and/or the world. Let-ters are judged at a state level and winners advance to the national competition to compete for a $2,000 cash prize. Details can be found at www.read.gov/letters/ and entry forms are available in the library. • National Novel Writing Month (NaNoWriMo) is an oppor-tunity for students to practice ‘freewriting’, a process that allows for a flow of words and thoughts without concern for polished writing. The library will be showcasing books by famous authors alongside the work of Pius X Future Authors Club, all of whom have won NaNoWriMo! This ambitious program is a great opportunity for aspiring writers to draw from the energy of a community of writers who will all be working towards writing 50,000 words in 30 days. Wow! The importance of reading is not exclusive to aspiring authors. Writing skills are important for effective communication and will help students succeed in almost every discipline. Reading is an im-portant component of the writing process and the library has all the necessary resources to help students become better writers and read-ers!

Pius X celebrated National School Lunch Week in Octo-ber. Here are some tidbits of information and facts about our lunch (and breakfast) program):n We serve around 800-1000 meals daily, 800 average and over 1000 on Meal in a Bowl day! n Favorite meals are Meal in a Bowl, beef sundaes, and Asian chicken with stir fry veggies, and a new favorite is pulled pork with cornbread and baked beans. n This year deli sandwiches and salads were added, and have been a hit with the students too.n It takes a large amount of food to make the entre happen but it also takes a lot of produce for the three fruit and vege-table bars! For example: Meal in a Bowl day - 270 pounds of chicken, 17 pans of mashed potatoes, 14 gallons of gravy, 160 pounds of corn, and 60 pounds of cheese. We use over 200 pounds of bananas, 70 pounds of apples, 30 pounds of carrot sticks, and about 60 cucumbers each week. n There are eight fantastic members on staff and a couple more who come in as subs or to cashier. They are amazingly hard working and find fun in each day!

n Pius X participates in the Farm to School program, which allows us to work with local famers and use their great fresh produce and other products like eggs, cheese, grains, and baked items. n We go through around 2500 containers of milk each week between chocolate, skim and 1% (chocolate is the favorite).n Every lunch can have up to five components from the food groups. The kids are required to get at least three. The students are catching on about the government requirements that we need to follow and are doing a great job realizing that a fruit needs to come with every meal and a what to add to get more protein. We don’t want any student to be hungry. We have many available options for the student to make a lunch even if they don’t want the entre’ offered.n A great hot breakfast is also served each morning from 7 to 10 a.m. for the students and staff to enjoy. We would really like the students to take advantage of this option. Breakfast is so important for a better focus and performance in and outside of the classrooms. See the menu on Page 12

Give to Pius X Day on Oct. 23 was another success, with many supporters making an investment in Catholic education in Lincoln. Our Give to Pius X Day replaced the three-day Phone-a-Thon in 2017 as our annual “kickoff” event for the Fund for Pius X. Each year, supporters can invest in the Fund for Pius X to nurture students’ talents and abilities, helping them deepen their love for Christ and prepare for their futures, by supporting:n scholarships and tuition assistance for students in need,n annual expenses to advance the school’s mission, including,n faculty/staff salaries.

Athletics & Activities

Social interaction is essential to almost everything we do and it is part of what makes us human. In childhood, children engage in a variety of activities like swim lessons, school and sleepovers. These social interactions can be fun, educational and uplifting, but for some children it can be anxiety produc-ing. Equipping youth with the tools they need to be successful in social settings can help reduce the anxiety. For some, a new social situation can cause stress, emotional outbursts or physical symptoms such as stomach aches. They may cry, become agitated or have a full-blown temper tantrum. Other signs of anxiety may include headaches, pacing or fidget-ing. Children may be hesitant to join in the activities right away or refuse to participate at all. It is important to understand that many children need assistance adjusting to new situations, not just children with an anxiety disorder. However, if these symp-toms persist talk, to a physician or mental health practitioner in your area. Children that become anxious in social settings may need additional time to adjust to new situations. The following are general tips to help reduce anxiety in social settings: • Arriving to the location early can help the children adjust to new surroundings before other children arrive. • Bringing a friend along can also help the situation feel more familiar and make the transition smoother. • Have discussions with your child or student about the event details to help them develop a better understanding of what to expect.

• Role playing or coaching can also help children feel more prepared and reduce anxiety. • Provide children with an outlet to share their feelings and concerns. • Be familiar with your child or student’s limits and give them their space when they are overwhelmed. • Help them practice coping skills, like deep breathing when they are stressed. One common activity that can be particularly anxiety producing is starting school for the first time or starting a new school year. Talk to your child about their anxieties and validate their feelings. Plan to attend student orientation with your student and facilitate a relationship between your child and the teacher. Strive to create a space that feels familiar and safe by helping your child find similarities to pre-school or daycare. Have discussions with your child about what to expect including their schedule. Have plans in place for drop-off and pick-up from school and who to talk to if they do not feel well or need to use the restroom. Open lines of communication be-tween the school and parents can help determine ways to help reduce anxiety for the child. Teachers can provide children with tasks to engage them in activities, help facilitate self-soothing techniques or help find a buddy in the classroom for the stu-dent.
