Blueberry Hill contains a forest comprised of both hard and soft woods. Notably, a rare oak-hickory stand thrives on Blueberry Hill ridgeline, stretching into North Yarmouth. The property is part of a larger 1,600-acre undeveloped forest block and abuts an already conserved 76-acre parcel. Due to all of these features, the parcel is a keystone in an emerging conservation and recreational corridor that spans several towns. The Opportunity For years the landowner, Richard Knight, welcomed the community to explore the property and ice skate on the pond. With Mr. Knight’s passing, the property was offered for sale and The Trust for Public Land secured a two year option to purchase the property. It is now up to the community to realize Mr. Knight’s dream of conserving his land for the public – and future generations – to enjoy forever. Funding Partnership The Trust for Public Land, Chebeague & Cumberland Land Trust, and Royal River Conservation Trust are working in close partnership to raise the funds necessary to protect Knight’s Pond & Blueberry Hill. The estimated total project cost of $1.13 million will be secured from a combination of public and private sources. A Community Treasure A hidden gem in the populated suburbs of Cumberland and North Yarmouth, Knight’s Pond & Blueberry Hill has provided locals with many outdoor opportunities over the years. We now have an unprecedented opportunity to conserve this magnificent property forever, saving it from development and ensuring that it will remain open to the public for all to enjoy. With a pond, a forested hillside, and a network of trails, Knight’s Pond & Blueberry Hill encourages many types of recreation. In winter, families can cross-country ski, snowshoe, ice skate, play hockey, snowmobile, and ice fish. During other seasons, hiking, mountain biking, and picnicking on the shores of the pond are popular. The ridge of Blueberry Hill offers views of Casco Bay and the White Mountains. The land’s proximity to both town centers and the local schools allows children a chance to explore, learn, and play in a pristine natural setting. Tucked amid developing suburbs, the 215-acre property provides critical wildlife habitat. The pond is a significant breeding ground for waterfowl and wading birds and is an important refueling spot during migration. The pond flows into brook-trout-rich Mill Brook, which eventually reaches the Presumpscot River and Casco Bay. Muskrat, beavers, turtles, and frogs live in the 46-acre pond and surrounding forest.
