PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE A MESSAGE FROM THE RABBI...In my columns over the past three years I have often mentioned the importance of community in our lives. Judaism provides an opportunity for us to come together united under a common purpose with common values. We are not intended to do this task alone. When we pray together, we elevate

our souls and create bonds that connect us to one another. This, to me, is one of the most important things that makes Temple Emanu-El so special. The more you attend our services the more connected you will feel to fellow congregants.

Spirituality, which is the next concept that I would like to mention, encompasses a central component, arguably an overlooked one, in today’s hectic world. Spirituality has many definitions but at its core there is a connection to something greater than ourselves. It is about our connection with God and attempting to live our lives for a higher purpose. Through community, we are able to experience spirituality.

It is our job as a Shul to provide our members with a special place that gives each of us the opportunity to achieve spirituality. This opportunity, for me, presents itself at our services. Friday night and Shabbat morning services provide those in attendance a time for reflection and introspection. Other members may connect through lectures, movies, or the countless activities and programs that are offered at our Temple. The important thing is that we provide all our members, regardless of age, an opportunity to experience the beauty of Judaism. Please feel free to share your ideas with me if there is a program that you would like to implement here at our Synagogue. I want every member to be engaged in Jewish life! Our Shul is only as vibrant as the energy and effort that our members put forth. It is imperative that Temple Emanu-El continues to evolve and grow as we meet the needs of an ever changing Jewish community.

B’shalom,Rob

NOTICE OF ANNUAL MEETING

The annual meeting of the membership of Temple Emanu-El of Palm Beach will be held on:

For Once, Then, Something by Robert Frost

Others taunt me with having knelt at well-curbsAlways wrong to the light, so never seeingDeeper down in the well than where the waterGives me back in a shining surface pictureMe myself in the summer heaven godlike

Looking out of a wreath of fern and cloud puffs.Once, when trying with chin against a well-curb,I discerned, as I thought, beyond the picture,Through the picture, a something white, uncertain,Something more of the depths—and then I lost it.Water came to rebuke the too clear water. One drop fell from a fern, and lo, a rippleShook whatever it was lay there at bottom,Blurred it, blotted it out. What was that whiteness?Truth? A pebble of quartz? For once, then, something.

As the “Season” in Palm Beach begins to slowly transition towards summer, the pace of life begins to change with it. Kayitz – summer in Hebrew – is the season of slowness. Our obligations ebb. Free time, together with the heat of the sun, flows upon us.

We take vacations – if we so choose and are fortunate enough – and we experience life in different ways and in different places. The very language we use to speak about summer reminds us of its purpose. Summer ‘refreshes’… it breathes fresh energy into our tired bodies and souls. Summer ‘renews.’ Summer is the season of recreation… a time for the “re-creation” of self, of relationships and of noble purpose.

Summer is not about wasting time. It is an opportunity to use time – as Robert Frost writes – to catch a glimpse of that which is “beyond the picture” of our everyday routines and schedules - to see with more clarity a way of living that has the potential to perhaps be more satisfying. (With this in mind, is it any surprise that the Jewish month of Elul – the month of introspection that precedes the High Holy Days – comes at the end of summer?)

So, allow me to say "Shalom" to our members who depart from Florida and wish us all a wonderful summer... a thoughtful, enlightening, refreshing summer, filled with health, discovery, joy… and that ‘something’ that makes our lives all the more meaningful.

B’Shalom,Rabbi Michael Resnick

Although the most prominent Yizkor service is the one conducted on Yom Kippur Day, most people are surprised to learn that there are three other occasions when Yizkor is recit-ed - on the last day of Passover, Shavuot, and Sukkot. While not as famous as the Yizkor on Yom Kippur, they are, nonetheless, equally important and equally beautiful. We invite you to remember your loved ones at all of these Yizkor Services throughout the year at Temple Emanu-El.

SHAVUOT, THE FEAST OF WEEKSis celebrated seven weeks after Passover. Since the counting of this period begins on the second evening of Passover, Shavuot takes place exactly 50 days after the (first) seder. Hence, following the Greek word for “fifty,” Shavuot is also referred to sometimes as Pentecost. Although its origins are to be found in an ancient grain harvest festival, Shavuot has long been identified with the giving of theTorah on Mount Sinai.

What are some customs and practices for Shavuot?– Staying up all night studying Jewish texts in what is called a tikkun– Reading the Book of Ruth*– Eating dairy foods– Decorating houses and synagogues with a floral theme to mark the agricultural history of Shavuot

*THE BOOK OF RUTH"And when you reap the harvest of your land, you shall not reap all the way to the edges of your field, or gather the gleanings of your harvest; you shall leave them for the poor and the stranger (Leviticus 23:22)."

The biblical reading assigned to Shavuot, the Book of Ruth, solidifies the connection between Shavuot and our obligation to feed the poor and the hungry. The story of Ruth is the only instance in the Bible in which the commandment of leket (the fallen stalks) is practiced. Boaz, a wealthy Israelite landowner, allows Ruth, a landless foreigner, to follow his farmhands as they harvest his fields so she can gather the stalks that they drop. Boaz’s generosity saves Ruth and her mother-in-law Naomi from starvation. Beneath this surface meaning of the text, however, there is a more ambiguous dimension to Ruth and Boaz’s interaction—her survival is predicated on his generosity; she becomes dependent on his charity.

In many parts of the world, Ruth’s story is uncomfortably familiar; many rural people lack access to arable land and remain vulnerable to hunger because they are unable to participate directly in the harvest. In response, governments and international institutions have developed systems of food aid that echo the mandates of pe’ah (the corners of the field), leket (the fallen stalks) and shich’chah (the forgotten stalks). But food aid can undercut the well-being of the very people it is intended to help. Shavuot and its relationship to the Book of Ruth provide a timely opportunity to examine the complex relationships among hunger, hunger alleviation and dependence.

Yom Hashoah - April 12

Yom Hashoah–Holocaust Remembrance Day–is observed one week after the conclusion of Passover, on the 27th of Nissan. Significantly, it is also halfway between the first day of the Warsaw Ghetto uprising–which began on the first day of Passover in 1943. This date, chosen by the Israeli government, emphasizes the nature of Jewish opposition to disaster. While the rituals for this holiday are still being created, it is a solemn day that is widely observed wherever Jews live.

Yom Hazikaron - April 18

Yom Hazikaron–Israeli Memorial Day–is observed one week after Yom Hashoah and one day before Yom Ha’atzmaut. It is a quintessentially Israeli holiday, commemorating all the soldiers who fell in defense of Israel from the Israeli War of Independence in 1948 to the present. While it is often acknowledged outside of Israel, it is in Israel itself that this holiday unites the whole country in its somber observance.

Yom Ha’atzmaut - April 19

Directly following Yom Hazikaron, Yom Ha’atzmaut is a joyful celebration of Israel’s independence. It is celebrated annually on the 5th day of Iyar, which in 1948 corresponded to May 14, the day on which David Ben Gurion, the nation’s first prime minister, announced the creation of the State of Israel. Yom Ha’atzmaut is celebrated both in Israel and in Jewish communities throughout the world.

MODERN JEWISH HOLIDAYS

Yom Yerushalayim - May 13

Yom Yerushalayim - Jerusalem Day – is the most modern of Jewish holidays. It celebrates the reunification of Jerusalem under Israeli rule following the Six Day War of June 1967. Although it is joyously celebrated in Israel, Yom Yerushalayim has yet to attain widespread popularity in the Diaspora. It is celebrated on the 28th of Iyar, in May or June, one week before the eve of Shavuot.

I am honored to accept the challenge of leading the Women’s League of Temple Emanu-El. It is a daunting task, but I am fortified with the support of a committed board of creative, intelligent and enthusiastic women.

My term began the weekend of our annual Shabbaton--and what a weekend that was! More than 70 of our members took part in services, both Friday night and Shabbat morning. Many thanks to Chair Rabbi Barbara Steinberg, her co-chairs Hiroko Davidow and Hadar Mehl and committee members, Mickey Feldberg, Renee Gordon, Vivienne Ivry, Sandra Rosen and Hana Siegelstein. Dr. Amy Kalmanofsky, JTS Associate Vice Chancellor and Associate Professor captivated us with her talks and study group focusing on one of her areas of expertise - "A Feminist Interpretation of the Bible". If you missed it, tune into the replay on TEPB.ORG.Our Women’s League mission is to make Judaism meaningful, dynamic and vital for all of our members and their families. We invite all the women of our synagogue to join with us. We welcome your ideas and are open to your suggestions as to how we can serve you better. We can, with your help, be inclusive to women from different stages of life. In the near future, we plan to convene an evening focus group of younger women and those who work full time who cannot attend our daytime meetings. This is your Women’s League, too, and we want to offer programs that meet your needs. If you are interested in being part of the focus group, please call the Temple office.Be sure to join us on Monday, April 23 at 1:00pm for our next program, “Treasures of the Temple”. Docents Sheila Josephberg and Haviva Langenauer will take us on a tour of the magnificent artwork in our sanctuary. Chairs Renee Plevy and Elissa Baum have a really interesting and enriching afternoon planned. On Monday, May 14th at 1:00PM, we will feature an “Afternoon at the Movies”, featuring the riveting documentary, Orchestra of Exiles, about the formation of the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra. Our movie maven, Hana Siegelstein, is chairing this event, complete with appropriate movie snacks. While this is the final program of the “season” and many of our snowbirds will be leaving, Women’s League is here year round. Summer program Chair Belle Winston is hard at work planning special entertaining excursions. Watch for announcements in the near future. We are already hard at work planning the programs for next year. If you would like to become involved, please let us know. As I said, this is your Women’s League and we need you to help us shape it for the future. I want to thank Rhea Zukerman, my predecessor, for leaving me such a vibrant, organized and energized group. Thank you for the faith you have in me. I hope that I can live up to your expectations.

B’Shalom,Marjie

Treasures of the Temple

THE INTELLECTUAL PURSUIT AT TEPBDuck into the Adult Education classes at synagogue on any Wednesday, from December to March, and you'll find twenty to thirty participants engaged in lively discussions of Bible, Values, Archaeology or the origin of prayers. Anchored by Rabbi Resnick, Dr. Haviva Langenaur, and a revolving roster of rabbis and visiting specialists, the classes are the scene of rich discussions each week. The assembled group of temple members is a vital part of the mix. They include a retired Army colonel, a Yeshiva graduate, a researcher into comparative religion, foreign language speakers, and the ever present Adult Education Chair Vivienne Ivry. The three hour sessions are so stimulating; classmates move afterwards to the Kramer Library to choose books related to the subject just studied. These are not casual drop-ins, they are serious students of Judaic studies who revel in the give and take each time they meet.

The selection of weekend scholars amplifies this desire for in-depth knowledge. Stephen J. Whitfield, professor of American Civilization at Brandeis University spoke on Jewish humor and how it was employed as a weapon to "defang" the unsavory reputation of Jews. The jokes he told were to make a point, not to amuse although some did both. Take the one about the Shtetl Jew on the train eating a herring. The officer opposite him asks, "What makes you Jews so smart?" The Jew tells him the herring, and offers to sell him one. The officer buys it at an elevated price and after eating it complains he could have gotten the herring for less in the market. "See," says the Jew, "you're smarter already." On Sunday Dr. Whitfield focused on the impact of Jewish composers in the field of popular music. Our own Maureen and Murray Wise accompanied by Claudio Waisigluss enhanced the program with their polished performance. The speaker at the Women's League Shabbaton weekend, Rabbi Adina Lewittes, a JTS professor, asked if women's voices are actually heard in the Bible. One person offered a "no." It does seem to be a patriarchal book. But Rabbi Lewittes pointed out two women whose eloquent words are quoted and ultimately affected the future of our people. Shifra and Puah, the two mid-wives who would not kill the Jewish male infants at birth because as they told the Pharaoh, the Jewish women are so strong they deliver the babies before they could get to them. Hence, the story of Moses and we know the rest. She evaluated each word and the way it was used in her careful study of Bible passages, pointing out the importance of women in the Bible. There was a lively discussion after the kiddush luncheon, continuing on this theme. These activities and other presentations during the year suggest that Temple Emanu-El is among a place for lovers of learning and those who find enjoyment in tough intellectual engagement.

DIRECTOR OF YOUTH EDUCATION & PROGRAMMING

As we near the end of another amazing year, our youth have had many opportunities to partake in extraordinary activities. A delegation of three Temple Emanu-El high schoolers traveled to represent our congregation at the annual AIPAC Policy Conference in Washington D.C. Hayley Huber, Hailey Reiter and Adam London not only participated in all the conference had to offer, but they also represented our congregation in the best way possible. Our teens were respectful of the other delegates and speakers, asked meaningful questions, held intelligent conversations with each other about the content and truly exemplified what an asset they are to the Jewish community. I have no doubt that these teens will continue to support Israel and the Jewish people in any way they can as they move forward into adulthood.

This was the first experience for the teens and myself at an AIPAC Policy Conference and I know this is said often but you truly don’t understand the magnitude of the event until you are there. Walking into a room filled with 18,000+ Pro-Israel Americans is such an inspiring and empowering feeling. Throughout the course of the Conference I was able to witness our teens’ excitement not to mention my own. Hearing the amount of Bi-Partisan support Israel has in Congress was very promising for the future of the American-Israeli relationship. One of the highlights of the Conference was actually an informal meeting with Congressman Brian Mast. At this meeting Temple Emanu-El's teens were able to not only thank their Congressman for his continued support of Israel, but they were also given the opportunity to ask him questions that are meaningful to their day to day lives.

This life-changing experience would not have been possible without the support of Bill Langfan, I want to take this opportunity to thank Mr. Langfan on behalf of myself and the teens. I cannot wait to share more of my impressions and give the teens a platform to share their thoughts about AIPAC Policy Conference.

Being a caregiver can be mentally, physically, and emotionally draining under the best of circumstances. The challenges of caring for a sick or elderly loved one can result in caregivers ignoring their own physical and emotional health, often to the extent that they don't recognize or cope with the symptoms of stress that they are experiencing. Temple Emanu-El's Caregiver Support Group offers a safe place to discuss the stresses and challenges of providing care for a loved one as well as strategies for also caring for yourself.

ZERO MOTIVATION

A zany, dark, & comedic portrait of everyday life for a unit of young, female Israeli soldiers. The Human Resources Office at a remote desert base serves as the setting for this cast of characters who bide their time pushing paper and battling in computer games, counting down the minutes until they can return to civilian life. Amidst their boredom and clashing personalities, issues of commitment - to friendship, love, and country - are handled with humor and sharp-edged wit.

The Judith & Jack Rosenberg Mentoring 4 Kids program at Alpert Jewish Family & Children’s Service has helped dozens of families since its inception in 1998. M4K works to achieve a healthy future for children ages 6-14 who are being raised in single-parent homes. This free program pairs children with same gender adult volunteer mentors who provide unconditional friendship and support by participating in fun, community activites as they build a lifetime friendship.

To learn about becoming a volunter or to learn how an M4K mentor can help your child who has lost a significant role model, please contact the following:

CLERGY GRATUITIES

Members inquire from time to time what the proper protocol is for recognizing the Rabbi and Hazzan for officiating at life-cycle events. The answer is that the Rabbi and Hazzan are paid by the Temple to provide those services to our members. Therefore, separate compensation is neither charged nor expected for those services. However, if a person feels motivated to do more, we recommend that contributions be made to the Temple in honor of the Rabbi and/or Hazzan. Each of them also maintains a discretionary fund from which financial assistance is provided to those in our congregation and our larger community who are in need.

Memorial Plaques

Honor your departed loved ones with a plaque installed

in the lower lobby’s Ruth & H. Bert Mack Memorial Room.

Memorial Plaques: $500 eachPlease contact the Temple office for more

information, (561) 832-0804, or email [email protected].
