Celebrate Lake Carmi! Here we go, excitement, lights, the Monday, July 3
rd Pontoon Boat Relay Race, the
Super Pontoon Boat Exhibition and more. All the details are in this issue, dates, times, and who. By the time you read this, the Pontoon Boat Relay
Raffle tickets will be available on your Shore or the Franklin General Store. Tickets are three for $5.00, you chose who you want to win and as most folks do, get tickets on each boat. You could win up to $1250. If your ticket gets drawn from the winning team’s bucket, you get $500, from the second
place bucket it’s $300, third place is $200, fourth place is $150 and fifth place $100. The Pontoon Boat Teams, six boats each, are The Pirates, flying the red colors from Patton Shore & Blackwoods, under the leadership of Jim Pivirotto. The Hammerheads come from across the lake, the Hammond Shore and are flying Blue, led by Captain Bob Larose. The Dueling Dolphins fly Green flags under the leadership of Captain Casey Robinson. The Wildcats fly the Yellow flags under the leadership of Captain Joe Craig. Captain Bill Spears and The Carmi Vipers of Vic’s Crossing, Shore Road, and Kings Court Orange team are fired up for 2017 after winning in 2016.
The excitement has been building; the challenges have been made, now the teams are getting ready.
All five teams are expected to display their colors and boats in the July 2
nd Celebrate Lake Carmi
Opening Boat Parade, beginning at the Westcott Shore at 4:00 p.m. They will be led by the Lake Carmi Pirate Ship, this year Captained by a new pirate leader Rob Evans of Patton Shore. Evans has apparently crossed over to the “dark side” since his retirement from law enforcement. A new event this year will be a Super Pon-toon Boat Exhibition featuring the big boats from Lake Carmi. This will take place right after the Pontoon Boat Relay Race, at about 8:30 p.m.
Also new this season, a rock band is playing at the North Beach, in front of the former restaurant. The Old Man Garage Band, six old men, who specialize in rock music will be performing from about 4:00 p.m. until just before the race.
This local band, featuring Gary Jacobs, Phil Love-lette, Jim Week, Alan Grandshaw, Lenny Larose and Todd LaForce will provide this special enter-tainment. Bring your chairs.

The boardwalk in the Lake Carmi Bog, a
great chance to experience nature, get the outside
air, it’s great for bird watching and more. Don’t
forget your camera. One recent visitor writes, “As
the boardwalk progresses from the edge of the
road, you’ll see the change in plants from edge
species that require more nutrients like bog rose-
mary, to the ones that thrive in the acidic, nutrient-
poor environment like small cranberry, blueberry,
and Labrador tea. It’s a great place to get up close
to sphagnum moss of which different species
(colors) thrive vertically away from the water table,
and horizontally from the water's edge. This forms
the basis of the “mat” for other plants to set root.
Best part? The acidic water of bogs prevents Mos-
quitos from laying their eggs—the Lake Carmi
Boardwalk is a mosquito free experience!
This 140-acre natural bog provides trails
and lots of exploration. For day use, including the
beach, $4.00 for age 14 and older, four years to 13
is $2.00. $90 for a season car pass, up to eight
persons per car, anytime in the season.

Canada will be 150 Years Old on July 1! So salute our neighbors, fly the Canadian
flag on this holiday. This day is a Canada National
Holiday; it was enacted by the Canada Constitu-
tional Act of July 1,
1867. One hundred
fifty years ago. This
act united what was
then Canada with
Nova Scotia and
New Brunswick into one Canada.
Lake Wise Awards at Lake Carmi The Franklin Watershed Committee has
completed the Lake Wise program for 2015-2017.
Five additional properties on the lake have recently
received the Award. These properties serve as
excellent examples for other lake shore owners.
With more than 300 cottages on the
lake, this award stands out as
recognition of special stewardship
of our lake shore.
Congratulations to recip-
ients: Al & Marcia Perry, Bruce &

Franklin Watershed Committee Report The FWC has a new address; all corres-
pondence should be sent to this address including,
receipts for expended funds to pump out a septic
tank or provide a port-a-potty for the holidays. The
FWC will refund a portion of the cost. The address
is: P.O. Box 79, Franklin, VT
05457. More information on any
FWC program is available from
President John Barrows,
802.363.3503.
It should be noted that
coordinator, Jean Elizabeth
Shockley has completed work on
the new FWC website,
www.franklinwatershed.org. Check it out; there is
lots of information on how you can be part of the
volunteer programs at the lake.
The FWC has several partnerships with the
Town of Franklin currently. They have hired an
engineer to do a stormwater study at the town
highway garage. This study will create an engin-
eered plan to reduce erosion run-offs into the Rock
River. Funding is provided by a Vermont Eco
Restoration Grant.
Another engineer has completed the second
and final phase of the Lake Carmi Camp Roads
survey. This includes the Mullen Shore Road,
Westcott Shore Road, Black Woods Road, Sandy
Bay and some smaller roads around the lake. A
previous study had surveyed Patton Shore Road,
Hammond Shore Road, Vic’s Crossing and Shore
Road. The study identifies specific areas for
conservation improvements including culverts and
other erosion control projects.
The FWC is also working with the Town to
coordinate three culvert improvement projects on
Swamp Road in August. The funding for these
projects comes from the State of Vermont through
a Better Roads Grant. Included will be plantings by
FWC volunteers in September.
Notes from Peter Benevento, President Since I came to Lake Carmi, for the first
time in 1971, I thought I had visited most areas
around the shoreline. While taking water samples
from the lake’s tributaries, however, I had
occasion to walk the wooded southeast shoreline. If
you like to take a walk in the forest, this is the
place to be. It is a lovely wooded area that
meanders along the lake, through the State Parks
land. They have marked the area with two walking
trails. Intermittent boardwalks and bridges
transport you through an abundance of nature. It is
truly a peaceful stroll through the woods, a very
special place on a very special lake. You access it
at the North end of the day use parking lot. A sign
indicating a nature trail guides your way. [This is
the area where the Birding Workshop will be on
July 15.]
Here’s another adventure area. If walking,
jogging, or cycling is your thing, here’s a great
route. Go north on Gallup Road, at the north end,
it’ one of my favorites. Once you leave Lake road
and head up the hill, there is a beautiful view of
Lake Carmi. You will also find a small well kept
cemetery containing the remains of Civil War
veterans. Continuing onward you’ll pass corn
fields, and hay field and maple sugaring operations
line the nearby hillsides.
Both the east and west sides of the lake
offer commanding views, State Park Road and
Riley Road respectively. Riley Road is especially
scenic with Jay Peak, Mount Mansfield, and
Camels Hump in the distance. Everywhere you
look our roads are steeped in heritage with iconic
barns, silos, and cupolas. (Your editor thinks perhaps
our President has been reading Robert Frost recently, it is
highly recommended.) This issue is full of fun and even educat-
ional events around Lake Carmi in the month of
July. All the details are in this issue, read all about
these special events. Make your plans and yes, get
your tickets too. Now not all our Lake Carmi
events are always fun, but this summer has sure
started off as fun, for those who have been
planning the events.
We have invited the new Secretary of Agri-
culture, Food, and Markets and the Vermont
Department of Environmental Conservation to
come to the lake. Anson Tebbits, Agriculture
Secretary and Commissioner of DEC, Emily
Boedecker have both accepted our invitation to
come to Lake Carmi.
DEC Commissioner Boedecker will be here
on Friday, July 14 to tour the lake, followed by a
potluck lunch. We currently expect the lunch will
be at the State Park. More details will be announ-
ced later. Secretary Tebbitts will be given a lake
tour as well, on Saturday, August 12. He will
attend the LCCA Annual Meeting that evening and
give the keynote address. We are fortunate to have
these Vermont leaders participating and learning
about our lake efforts. Please mark your calendar,
plan to attend both events.

Vermont’s Largest Natural Lakes Every few years the question comes up,
“How big is our little lake?” Our lake is not so
little. Carmi is about 1402 acres with about 300
cottages around its nearly eight-mile shoreline.
Carmi is the fourth largest natural lake entirely
within Vermont. It has nearly eight miles of shore-
line, about two miles of it is State Park. The depth
averages about 20 feet and is 33 to 35 feet at its
deepest point.
The lake drains north into Quebec’s Pike
River, then into Lake Champlain, making us part of
the Lake Champlain watershed. Lake Carmi was
once much larger. In the thousands of years since
the last ice age, the southern end of the original
lake has silted in, creating wetland forests and the
third largest peat bog in Vermont.
The largest natural lake in Vermont is Lake
Bomoseen (Castleton-Hubbardton) at 2370 acres,
Lake Seymour (Morgan-Charleston) comes in
second at 1769 acres. The third largest lake in
Vermont is Lake Willoughby (Westmore) at 1692
acres.

Lake Carmi Cottage & Home Tour 2017 The homes on this tour, the first since 2013,
are both cottages (new and traditional), seasonal
and year round. Several go back to the first half of
the 20th
century, even though they don’t look it
now. This fundraiser will provide attendees a great
look inside life as a “camper” at Lake Carmi.
You’ll enjoy every minute and step.
Each Ticket includes a map of the locat-
ions; they are easy to reach. Besides a unique view-
ing of living at the lake, you’ll get treated by a
local vendor, a restaurant, winery and even a brew-
ery, even a farm supply store. Tickets are limited
so get them well in advance; tickets will not be
available at any of the cottages or homes.

You'll get to visit both
cottages and enjoy the

Katie Thompson welcomes you to her
classic and vintage “sister camps,’ build circa 1895
on the shore opposite her private little island. Her
address is 344 Mullen Shore Road; a must see that
everyone has admired for nearly a century. Katie
bought this property in the fall of 2016; it had been
in the same family for more than 60 years. Meticul-
ously groomed, maintained, and restored this is the
ultimate family compound. The island has always
been protected by the former owners, that contin-
ues, except that now it proudly flies “Old Glory”
for all to enjoy. The 14th
Star Brewing Company of
St. Albans and Gosselins are serving here.
George & Toni Robson along with
daughter Michelle & Brian Irish will host you at
their restored and renovated cottage at 52 Harrison
Drive, off Hammond Shore Road. They have been
working on this multi-generational cottage since
2010. The vaulted living room features the original
stone fireplace and expansive lake views with
spectacular sunsets. Due North Winery, Boston
Post Dairy and Maggie T’s are presenting.

2013, they moved the old camp, repurposing it to a
garage and shop, then they built the new cottage.
Here the family enjoys the perfect sunsets, wonder-
ful neighbors, and host many family gatherings.
At 14 Perry Landing Road, off Shore Road,
you’ll find the Perry compound and the cottage of
David and Erin Perry. This is a unique home,
made of two buildings. The home on the lake is a
two bedroom; the owners describe it as like living
on a porch. The second made to simulate an
English Pub, over the newly constructed garage
behind the cottage. Like so many families at Lake
Carmi, David Perry grew up on the lake, along
with his family that now supports many aspects of
life at Lake Carmi. Jeff’s Maine Seafood of St.
Albans will be serving selections.
Brady & Chris Giroux have a beautiful old
cottage at Lake Carmi, but their home is at 2011
Lake Road. This unique timber frame home was
built in 1997 with salvaged beams from antique
Vermont barns. The home features a large timber
front porch and back deck. It’s sided with recycled
roof slate. Most of the windows and doors, as well
as many of the bath and kitchen fixtures, are
salvaged and recycled architectural pieces. There is
also a detached two-car carriage barn. The Franklin
General Store will be serving at this lovely home.
While visiting these beautiful cottages and
homes, you’ll want to discover the unique features
of each. Like the front door of the Giroux home
and lots more.
Tickets will be available after the 4th
of July
from some LCCA members and directors, at the
Franklin Telephone Company, the Franklin
General Store and by mail. To get your tickets by
mail, sent a check for $20/ticket, plus $1.00/order

Coming & Going There are happy times and sad times in any com-munity; we are no different.
Coralyn Samson passed, recently at her home in Florida. For more than a half-century, “Doc” Olin and his wife Lyn made Mullen Shore their summer home. They also owned the island in front
of their cottage. Mrs. Samson had been a summer resident for 82 years. She was the daughter of Helen & Walbridge Whiting. She is survived by her husband, their two daughters, and four grand-children. She is also survived by her brother-in-law, David Samson who resides on Patton Shore.
James T. Forsyth Westcott Shore passed away on June 9 at the age of 83. Jim and wife Cynthia had spent their summers at the lake, since purchasing it in 1968. He leaves his wife, Cynthia, daughter Holly (Brice) Johnson of NH and two sons, Todd (Cheryl) of Jericho and Shawn of Maine. He is also survived by his brother Tom of Swanton and sister Elenore Woods of NH, and several grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
While visiting at the boat launch recently John McHugh and Larry Myott got to meet the newest member of our village, and a fifth gener-ation member as well. Susan Prasch, a third generation member, brought her new grand-son, Hayden by to say hello. Hayden was born
on May 23; he was visiting Gramma with his parents.
2017 Cyanobacteria Resources As in the past several year's volunteers at Lake Carmi will be regularly (at least once per week) checking for any signs of cyanobacteria at several locations around the lake. The program is run by Lake Champlain Committee, assisting the Vermont DEC and the Vermont Department of Health. The monitoring sites by our volunteers are
the Dewing Shore, Vic’s Crossing, Patton Shore, Hammond Shore, the State Park, and more cons-tant monitoring at North Beach. The volunteers turn in reports to the LCC on or about the same time and day each week, unless there occurs an active bloom. The state also monitors the state park and the North Beach. If you see what might be cyanobacteria (formerly called blue-green algae, it is not algae) call one of the monitors to check it further. You can also call the Vermont Department of Health at 800.439.8550. You can also email after hours or holidays and weekends, [email protected]. Volunteers to call if you see what might be a bloom are Peter & Marion Benevento, Larry Myott, and Diane Larose.
Pirate Ship Found in Dry-dock Apparently, the Pirates of Lake Carmi are
getting ready to again raid visitors, residents, and cottages. Obviously, the fast pontoon boat folks are preparing for the inevitable. Recently, the pirate boat was found in dry-dock, hidden on the West-cott Shore. It looks like it must have had a hard winter, but there are signs of repairs in progress. On the same day the boat was found, this photo, below, was shot from Rt. 120 at the north end of the lake. Sure was peaceful and beautiful awaiting the coming action of the next few months.
