LAKE COUNTRY RCMP Const. Brandwyn Rigby called this year’s Cops for Kids rides “awesome,” especially the support she received from Lake Country.
KEVIN PARNELL
Awesome in every way.
at’s how Lake Country RCMP Con-st. Brandwyn Rig-by describes the 10-day, 1,000-kilometre Cops For Kids bike ride that she took part in this year, an event that raised over $350,000 for the organ-ization that helps kids and families in need.
From her ascent of the 1,575 metre Paulson Summit near Castlegar, to sweltering through 38 C heat in Oliver, to hail and a 2 C chill in Cran-brook, to riding through her home detachment in Lake Country, there
wasn’t a part of the Cops for Kids ride that Rigby didn’t love.
“Awesome is prob-ably the best word and in all the ways that awe-some means: Humbling, awe inspiring, amazing,” she said. “We had a lot of laughs and there were tears. ere were a lot of high highs and low lows. We experienced the full spectrum, physically and emotionally.”
e Cops for Kids an-nual fundraising ride takes place each year and raises funds for the RC-MP’s charitable organiz-ation. As the riders made stops in di erent com-munities in the region, families who have been

“ at was the hum-bling part,” she said. “We met families who were there to say, ‘ ank-you so much because in our time of need you had our back.’ We heard some pretty amazing stor-ies from people who just needed some help.”
Riding together as part of a team was a nat-ural extension of their jobs, said Rigby. As peace o cers riders are used to helping each other out and on the ride it was no di erent as they encour-aged each other to keep on riding over the 10-day trek. On the long as-cent to the top of the Paulson Summit, the only stretch where the pack of riders separat-ed and went on their own, Rigby said she had time to think and it was all about the people that the charity supports and help.

e president of the Okanagan College Fac-ulty Association says students appear to be more engaged in this year’s federal election than any other in recent memory.
Tim Walters says if those students realize the voting power that they have, even more might get out and vote.
“ ere is no question students have massive (voting) power, this is what I have been talking to my students about,” said Walter, who works
at the Salmon Arm cam-pus of Okanagan Col-lege and represents the college’s faculty asso-ciation. “ ey have the power but they are com-pletely unaware.
“If you ip the num-bers between voting rates for seniors and students we would have a di er-ent Prime Minister and a di erent Premier.”
With UBC Oka-nagan and Okanagan College operating in Ke-lowna and with satel-lite campuses around the Okanagan Valley, it’s es-timated some 20,000 students are hitting the
books in the Okanagan. Walter says those are
big numbers of poten-tial voters that can make a di erence in this elec-tion.
However past elec-tions have shown that young people don’t get out and vote as much as the older generations.
In the 2011 feder-al election, according to Elections Canada, just under 39 per cent of eli-gible voters aged 18 to 24 cast ballots, compared to more than 75 per cent of voters aged 65 to 74.
To get young people engaged and feeling that their vote matters, many have taken to technology
and social media, includ-ing a former Okanagan College student and now Concordia journalism student Matthew Heu-man.
Heuman developed an app this year called Vote Note in an e ort to pick up the slack he says Elections Canada has dropped, providing voter information in an easy to use app that people can access on their phones.
Heuman says the Fair Elections Act, intro-duced by the Harp-er Government, will make it harder for youth to vote. So the former
Penticton resident took it upon himself to develop the app for smart phones to provide the informa-tion, not only to the 18 to 24 demographic but to all Canadians.
“We just see this as the next step for-ward,” said Heuman in an interview with Black Press.
“Everyone has a smart phone and this should have been available 10 years ago. We didn’t re-invent the wheel here, we just made all the resour-

“Everything has an app nowadays and the fact we don’t have one for one of the most im-portant processes in the country, we see that as
very archaic.”Heuman says it’s not
just youth who aren’t turning out in big num-bers to vote but also the 25- to 34-year-old demographic—people starting families and ca-reers. He says togeth-er, people from 18 to 34 wield plenty of power.
“ e ability for 18- to 35-year-olds to dis-rupt the process is huge. Even just a small in-crease could be a dramat-ic shift. Five per cent of the youth demographic is 150,000 people which is enough to make a dif-ference. But they see vot-ing as something that is di cult.
“It’s an arduous pro-cess and I think mak-ing it more accessible is the rst step in getting people more engaged.”
From the Salmon Arm campus of OC, Walters agrees that there could be a shift if the younger generations came out to vote in big numbers.
“I thought for a long time that young people would be more engaged in this process and I think there is a di erent energy about this elec-tion that might be at-tractive to them,” he said.
“ ere has been such a huge amount of bad will generated by the current government that has ltered down to young people. I hope this will be the election they come out and vote in droves.”

Does your vote count? e current rst-past-
the-post electoral system, say critics, doesn’t re ect the interests of voters and discourages further political engagement.
ere are always rum-blings about electoral re-form, but this year three of the four federal par-ties have made it an elec-tion issue.
In June Liberal lead-er Justin Trudeau said if elected he will convene an all-party commit-tee to study the options, then enact some replace-ment for the current
rst-past-the-post sys-tem within 18 months of being sworn in.
Liberals have said they lean toward a system where second choices are counted in.
e NDP has long championed elector-al reform, focusing on mixed-member propor-tional representation, where every elector gets two votes, one for a lo-cal MP, another for a party list.
e Conservative Party supports the win-ner-take-all-system that’s currently in place. In the last election, it had them win 54 per cent of
the seats in the House with just 39 per cent of the popular vote.
Between 2005 and 2009 there were referen-dums on electoral reform in Prince Edward Is-land, Ontario and twice in B.C., yet the status
quo in all those places prevailed, said political scientist Wolf Depner. e public appetite for change hasn’t been there, he said.
Depner has doubts that the political will for change will persist if the parties now advocating for it are elected.
“A lot of people nd our system to be anti-quated, outdated and no longer in touch with modern realities…but the thing is, general-ly parties that talk about electoral reform are not the parties in power.
“Once they nd themselves in power,
they nd the value in the system as it is.” e Con-servatives, he pointed out, talked about it be-fore they were elected.
If the issue gets lost in the shu e, said Depner, it will be a bit of a shame, as voter engagement seemingly increases in western democracies that use some form of pro-portional representation.
In Germany where it’s used, for example, voter engagement was around 70 per cent in the 2011 election. During the 2011 election, Can-ada’s voter turnout sat at around 61 per cent.
Proportional rep-
resentation produces a representative body (a parliament, legislature, or council) where the vot-ers are represented in proportion to how they voted.
Our rst-past-the-post system elects only one MP in each riding. When more than two candidates run in a rid-ing, an MP can be elect-ed with less than half of the votes in the riding. e other half of the vot-ers are unrepresented.
In contrast, a propor-tional system elects sev-eral MPs to represent a given geographic region so that most voters in
that region have a voice in parliament.
With that system, Depner said that coali-tion building is also more common.
“Parties rarely win an outright majority. Co-alitions in countries that use a proportional sys-tem are the norm, not the exception,” he said.
“And proportion-al systems are part and parcel of a more con-sensus-oriented form of democracy and govern-ance, while rst-past-the-post systems tend to be common in democra-cies that emphasize con- ict and competition.”
KEVIN PARNELL
If the students she represents at Okanagan College had as much passion for the election process as Chelsea Grisch, voter turn-out amongst students wouldn’t be a problem.
Engaged in the elec-tion and passionate about the student vote, Grisch, 25, and the rest of the Okanagan Col-lege Students’ Union (OCSU) have been working hard to get stu-dents motivated to vote in this year’s federal elec-tion.
“We’re just reminding people that the youth demographic has low voter turnout which is pretty appalling,” said Grisch, the chairperson of the OCSU.
“ is (election) is not something that has to be determined by old men essentially. Youth are empowered (to make change).
“We’re just reminding people that all over the world people die for the right to vote. It’s a big deal and if you like com-plaining about the coun-try, the back end of that is you’re socially obligat-ed to vote.”
 e movement to en-
gage young voters is tak-ing place at post second-ary institutions across the country.
Online the Canadian Federation of BC Stu-dents has a campaign underway asking stu-dents to pledge to vote with the tag line is Time We Decide (this-timewedecide.ca).
And it’s not just stu-dents.
Noted comedian Rick Mercer has taken to Fa-cebook to push voting at votenation.ca while Can-adian musicians are at-tempting to rally the vote by promoting #imagin-eoct20, an online move-ment asking for change that has included a few
concerts.All of these are aimed
at getting non-tradition-al voters out of their mal-aise and to the polling station.
It mirrors the e orts of the Okanagan College Students’ Union in its at-tempts to get students to care about federal pol-itics at a time in their life
when many of them are not only in school but also working one or two jobs to help with tuition.
To make it easier and less time-consuming, the OCSU is hoping a unique candidate’s meet and greet on Oct. 14 will allow students the opportunity to have their questions answered and get involved in the polit-ical process.
Instead of hosting an all-candidates’ forum as they did in 2011, the OCSU has invit-ed each candidate from the two local ridings to an open house style
gathering and as of this week, all seven candi-dates from the Kelow-na-Lake Country and Central Okanagan-Sim-ilkameen-Nicola ridings had con rmed attend-ance, according to exec-utive director Brianne Berchowitz.
It won’t be your typ-ical forum where candi-dates introduce them-selves and pledge party promises.
Instead it will give students a chance to ask their own questions and take as much, or little time as necessary.
“We’re hoping to get community members engaged instead of doing a forum that doesn’t al-low students to ask ques-tions they want to ask,” said Herchowitz.
“ is is more of a meet and greet with some information tables so students can pick up some information and ask a question over maybe ve minutes as opposed to a couple of hours.”
For Grisch, getting students engaged in the political process is an in-teresting conundrum. Her peers, she says, are a very political generation.
ey are opinionated and also open to hearing
both sides of the story. However, their per-
sonal philosophy hasn’t translated to votes when it comes election-time.
is time—with the help of student organiz-ations pushing the envel-ope—she hopes it will be di erent.
“My generation has very pronounced opin-ions on things and often will go and do the re-search to back their opinions up,” she said.
“We’re a very polit-ical generation but very politically detached. I do think if we can get those kids voting, there will be a bit of a demo-graphic shift, especial-ly as the political cli-mate has changed. is election is going to be so close. I think the youth will come out.
“I think [youth vot-er turnout] will be high-er than it has been due to the mobilization of the student organizations.”
e Okanagan Col-lege Students Union meet and greet with the federal candidates is Oct. 14, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., in the Centre for Learning Atrium at the Okanagan College Kelowna campus, 1000 KLO Road.

I was probably eight years old when someone realized I needed glasses.
In those days, teach-ers wrote what students needed to know on the blackboard. I could bare-
ly see the board from the back of the class. Even from the front, I had to squint to read the writ-ing.
In one sense, short-sightedness be-came a blessing. Because I sat at the front, I was also under the teacher’s eye, so I never developed a habit of misbehaving, or of not paying atten-tion.
But the optometrist
had trouble tting me with the right prescrip-tion. As I peered through his machine at letters on a chart, he’d ip from one lens to another and ask, “Is that better?”
I always said, “Yes, I think so.”
After all, I reasoned, he’s the expert. If he’s trying to help me see better, then clearly, any-thing he does must be better.
I wanted to please. To belong. To be accepted. I didn’t want to imply that he might have made things worse. So I said, “Yes, I think so.” Even if the letters were growing more blurry with each change.
Eventually, he gave up asking me questions, and tted me with some-thing that was certainly better than nothing.
But ingrained hab-its are hard to break. ose of us who hunger and thirst after accept-ance tend to say what we think people want

We want to hear your
opinions on issues going
on in our community e federal budget
document began with an ominous warning about deep cuts. Social pro-grams, justice and cor-rections would be spared as much as possible, but no department would escape the knife.
e stark truth was re-vealed in a table of g-ures. Health care spend-ing, the core of the Can-adian state, was cut by 3.8 per cent in just the rst year of the scal plan, as population and need continued to grow.
No, this is not from the Stephen Harper budget of April 2015, or any other in the last dec-ade. It’s from the Jean Chretien budget of 1995, more than 20 years ago. at’s the last time any-one actually cut health care spending.
But wait, you may say. Didn’t I hear that Harp-er has slashed health care spending by $30 billion? Yes, you probably did hear the biggest, most brazen lie of this election campaign, either from
the government unions that advertised it or the politicians who parrot it.
If health care really is everyone’s high-prior-ity issue, as pollsters have long assured us, voters should at least know the facts.
After cutting provin-cial health and social ser-vices transfers for years to end the string of oper-ating de cits that began under Pierre Trudeau and continued under Brian Mulroney, Liber-al nance minister Paul Martin rose brie y to the top job.
In 2004, Martin
staged meetings with premiers, emerging with what was billed as “a x for a generation,” with federal health transfers to rise six per cent each year into the future.
e future for Mar-tin’s government last-ed only two years, as his minority was replaced with one led by Harper.
ese galloping in-creases continued until the Conservative major-ity of 2011, after which then- nance minis-ter Jim Flaherty came to Victoria to inform prov-incial nance ministers of the new plan. (I was there, and the joke was that this was as far from Ottawa as Flaherty could get without leaving Can-ada.)
e six-per-cent in-creases, by that time tri-ple in ation, would con-tinue for another ve years. Starting in 2017-18, increases would be tied to economic growth, with a minimum hike of three per cent, still well ahead of today’s in-
ation. at remains the Conservative plan today.
All provinces east of Saskatchewan pitched a t. Manitoba’s NDP -nance minister termed it “un-Canadian.” Left-ies immediately called it a cut, to which Flaherty replied that transfers to provinces would rise from $30 billion to $38 billion in 2018-19, and continue to grow af-ter that.
In B.C., then- nance minister Kevin Falcon praised the long-term approach, acknowledg-ing that health spend-ing was ballooning to half of the provincial budget and had to be brought under control as baby boomers start to re-tire. B.C. has largely ac-complished that, with spending increases below three per cent and health care outcomes that con-tinue to lead the country.
As the current elec-tion campaign turns into the home stretch, Sta-tistics Canada has an-nounced a milestone. For
the rst time in history, the number of seniors exceeds number of chil-dren. is demograph-ic shift is inexorable, pre-dictable and must be ad-dressed by whoever wins the Oct. 19 federal elec-tion.
NDP leader om-as Mulcair is on rec-ord that he will scrap the Conservative formula for growth-based increas-es that he pretends are cuts, returning to six per cent every year while bal-ancing the budget. Little detail has been provid-ed on how this would be done.
Liberal leader Jus-tin Trudeau announced in Surrey last week that he will ante up an ex-tra $3 billion over four years for health care, and “sit down with the prov-inces immediately” to re-negotiate, a rerun of Paul Martin’s political theatre.

As I launch into my favourite diatribe, some-one else speaks up and says, they don’t vote. eir friends don’t. e lady down the street doesn’t.
And the weight of disappointment for my fellow Canadians pushes my shoulders down just a little bit. Because I’m not OK with this line of con-
versation. I’m not sym-pathetic.
Are we su ering from the downfall of abun-dance?
Is it stupidity?I don’t understand. How can you in one
breath complain about
the amount of taxes you’re paying or the cost of childcare today, then not vote?
What about that stu-dent loan? Do you know what the parties are say-ing?
How can you express heartache about refu-gees dying on European shores, and not march your butt down to the polling station assigned to you when the time comes?
How can you lament the changing weather, and not ask some serious questions about what this country is doing to combat climate change?
Each election repor-ters write stories trying
to encourage Canadians to vote.
We point to the issues, we make calls and ask political scientists, “can you tell us what’s wrong?”
“If it was easier, would people vote?”
“If it was online, would people vote?”
“If there was elector-al reform, would people vote?”
People still aren’t showing up at the bal-lot box, but I can’t stop asking.
While I’m on a roll, I’d also like to know what are Canadians talking about around the dinner table these days?
 ere can’t be such a
disconnect that people don’t realize that their in-dividual struggles and triumphs, as well as those of their loved ones and neighbours, are a ect-ed by decisions far above our heads.
Will your one vote make a di erence?
Maybe not in the most obvious way, but now is not the time to take a pass on democracy.
I’m fond of what Shane Koyczan said to me today.
“Your vote is the hand on the wheel. You are steering the coun-try, that’s what your vote is for… ings are not going to change over-night…it’s more of a dir-
ection, where we are go-ing.”
ere are a couple of weeks left, but I hope everyone considers what direction they’d like to put this country in.
Even if it’s not the same direction as I will choose.
Just choose. Vote. Be a part of the process that people in other parts of the world are dying for.
There’s absolutely no acceptable rationalization for choosing not to vote

At one point in my career as a journalist, I was sent to Hanover, Ontario, a city suppos-ed to have more church-es per capita than any other place in Can-ada. I introduced myself to the pastor of a small but fervently evangelical church, so small they met in a converted garage.
“Welcome,” he said, seizing my outstretched hand in both of his. “Have you given your life to Jesus?”

of possible responses.I could have picked
a date at random, and said, “Yes, December 12, 1953, at 9:27 p.m.”
I could have said, “Yes, many times, including this morning.”
I could have said, “None of your business. My job is to write about you, not to defend my own religious perspec-tives.”
I could even have said, “I don’t believe that crap!”—and forfeited the interview.
But I said–you guessed it–“Yes, I think so.” It took me another half hour to extricate my hand from his clutch, so that we could start the interview.
I still don’t want to of-fend unnecessarily, but I think I’m nally getting over my social insecur-ities. I’d rather not be ac-
cepted than accepted for something I’m not. It’s simply too hard to live a lie.

Award winning, Can-adian spoken word art-ist Shane Koyczan made his mark on this coun-try’s psyche at the 2010 Olympics, with his poem, We Are More.
Canada, he opined before an international audience, “is an experi-ment going right for a change.”
ose words, he said, don’t have the same res-onance today.
“ e country has changed. (Stephen) Harper said it himself: ‘You’re not going to rec-ognize Canada when I’m through with it.’
“Well, I already don’t recognize Canada,” said Koyczan, an Okanagan University College grad and Peniticton resident.
Koyczan was speak-ing at the Kelowna air-port last week, await-ing a ight to Vancou-ver where he’s scheduled to perform alongside other musicians involved in the #ImagineOct20th movement .
Events are being or-ganized under that ban-ner across the country, and they feature famous Canadian musicians and artists, hoping to encour-age voters to oust the Harper government.
For Koyczan, it’s the ideal space to express mounting frustrations.
“I never thought Can-ada would be the place to slam the door in the faces of people try to come to the country,” he said, referencing the Syr-ian refugee crisis. Can-ada pledged in January to bring 10,000—of an estimated 4.1 million—Syrian refugees to Can-ada for resettlement. us far, only 2,300 have been given access.
Koyczan also pointed to concerns he had about the government’s policy to not allow its scientists to speak publicly on their research, and the an-ti-terror bill C-51.
What might be most concerning, however, is that it seems that people aren’t doing anything. Voter apathy brought election participation levels as low as 61 per cent the last time around, and it remains to be seen whether there will be a hike by Oct. 19.
“How do you wake people up? What are we
supposed to do here?” he said.
“Right now you have a party that’s promising to get rid of student debt and you aren’t willing to vote? Free education? Can you imagine living your life without any stu-dent debt at all? It’s be-ing o ered and nobody is voting. Why is that not enough? What do you want? Free iPhones? What’s it going to take?”
He’s not unaware of the lament that one vote doesn’t amount to much, but Koyczan sees it the way only a poet could.
“Your vote is the hand on the wheel. You are steering the country, that’s what your vote is for,” he said.
“ ings are not go-ing to change overnight …it’s more of a direction, where we are going. e course we are on now feels very dangerous and tenuous.”
Koyczan admitted he could speak for hours about politics, but his work isn’t so singularly focused, and those who show up for his show later this month in Ke-lowna will get a full ex-perience.
“It’s more of a roller coaster thing,” he said. “When people come to my shows I want them to have an emotional jour-ney. We will go to some dark places and they will go to some light places, too….I want to reach out to those emotional parts of you and draw them in and remind you that it’s OK to be emotional, you are human after all.”
While We Are More was arguably the piece of work that put him on the map for re-minding Canadians of their shared connection,
he’s seen numerous sub-sequent successes. His 2012 poetry collection Our Deathbeds Will Be irsty, featured the poem To is Day. at anti-bullying poem was made into an animat-ed video viewed online nearly 16 million times, and Koyczan said it did more for his career than anything else to date..
Graphic novels, lms and collaborations with musicians of all stripes have followed.
“If you are going to be an artist for a living, you have to try a lot of di er-ent things,” he said.
And, he pointed out, that trying out di erent things is what got him a
career in the rst place. “It’s always weird to
me that I have fans, and this is what I get to do for a living,” he said.
“You go to school, and you hear, ‘ is is what you want to do? ere’s no chance at all.’ And you get told that enough and you start to believe it…I am constantly as-tonished from the fans and the support I get that allow me to con-tinue trying this. It’s amazing, it’s a beauti-ful life.”

opinion
In our utopian view, we look at the right to vote as a corner-
stone of our democracy. In North America,
where the U.S. and Can-ada are the showcas-es of democracy to the rest of the world, voting is the balance from living under the rule of tyranny that so many people live under in their native countries today.
But that showcase of democracy is beginning to show some cracks. Other systems of gov-erning are increasing-ly tainted by chaos, in-action, apathy, the wealth continuing to be concen-
trated in fewer and few-er hands.
In the U.S., the con-cept of encouraging people to ‘get out and vote’ has given way to a democratic system that is
broken, polluted by lim-itless corporate dona-
tions and campaign election strategies that actually put up obstruc-tions against the margin-alized—minorities, the poor the other disenfran-chised—from even vot-ing.
While that margin-alization of voters has not happened to the same extent in Canada, the signs of U.S. polit-ical campaigning in u-ence are beginning to show, with one example being Elections Canada is now limited on how it can promote people get-ting out to vote.
Voter turnout in our last election was the third
lowest in Canadian hist-ory at 61.4 per cent. e record low was registered in the 2008 election at 58.8 per cent.
e emotional plea during every federal elec-tion is to recall the vet-erans who sacri ced their lives for our coun-try to protect our right to vote, our democrat-ic way of life. But sadly today, as the two world wars which created that thought fade into hist-ory, that emotional res-onance doesn’t have the same impact.
Voters look at the fed-eral government, par-ticularly from the out-
reaches of the west coast, as not being really very relevant to their day-to-day lives. ey look at the politicians and feel the same way, nding it increasingly di cult to di erentiate one party from another, one candi-date from another. Cyn-ical about the process and those running it. But there are two colloquial-isms that ring true in the political world: All pol-itics is local; and voting does matter.
e challenge to all voter apathy must be met by each of us individual-ly who choose to vote. In the modern day of pol-
itical campaigning, the idea of the voter turn-out rising by 20 or 30 per cent on Oct. 19 would send campaign strat-egists into a tizzy.
All those addition-al votes would be ga-mechangers, but only if voters follow through, realize that cynicism for politics starts and ends with them. Otherwise, we deserve what we get for an elected govern-ment.

Marion Sallenbach is a truly outstanding com-munity volunteer who has made a tremendous impact on countless fam-ilies in the Okanagan.
At 93 years of age, Sallenbach has been an active volunteer in the Okanagan for more than 50 years and her ef-forts have helped to raise thousands of dollars for the Kelowna General Hospital.
She began volun-teering with the Hospi-tal Auxiliary in Win eld
in the late1960s. Since then, she has been an in-strumental leader in doz-ens of volunteer clinics and successful fundrais-ing initiatives.
Marion was and con-tinues to be involved in running baby clinics, working alongside nurs-es to prepare newborns for their immunizations. In her role as the Win- eld Auxiliary president in the 1970s and her decades-long stint as the treasurer, she helped to create a now-renowned
catering service for spe-cial events like weddings, memorials and anniver-saries, donating all the proceeds to the Kelowna General Hospital Foun-dation.
One of her most suc-cessful volunteer in-itiatives was the Lake Country Calendar, which Marion ran out of her basement in the 1970s before selling it to the McCarthy family in 1979.
Marion began the newspaper as a com-munity newsletter and solicited advertisements from local businesses as a way of raising funds. She and her fellow volunteers put in many hours of labour to print the pages, collate and assemble them before distributing them across the entire community, now known as Lake Country.
In addition to her work for the hospi-tal, Sallenbach has also volunteered with the Win eld Commun-ity Church, the Red Cross and the Independ-ent Order of Foresters, through which she has
donated her time and ex-pertise in myriad ways, including to help prepare Wheels to Meals for seniors in need, book-keeping and helping with “Adopt-a-Road” in-itiatives.
Today, Marion con-tinues to contribute to the hospital and her community any way she can, even spending her spare time knitting hats for premature babies.
Marion’s whole-hearted commitment to making the world a bet-ter place, not only for us but also for the gener-ations to follow, makes her an exemplary com-munity leader.
“I like to help other people,” is how Marion describes her personal initiative to volunteer in her community. “I enjoy meeting people…I really enjoyed helping out with the baby clinics because I got to see all the new babies.”
For Sallenbach, who moved to Lake Coun-try from Salmon Arm in 1944 and today lives on a rural property with both her children and their families as her neigh-bours, says volunteering is for her “just a way to help out.”

SAWYER KLASSEN
A 13-year-old Oka-nagan girl decided re-cently to do what she could to help women and girls living in Af-ghanistan.
So Tessa Monaghan organized a fundrais-er for Little Women for Little Women, an or-ganization that supports education programs in Afghanistan with the goal of restoring human rights for women.
Little Women for Little Women was start-ed by Alaina Podmorow when she was still a young school girl in Lake Country.
“I realized that I was lucky to be born in Can-ada in this day and age,” said Monaghan, “and I go to a great school (Aberdeen Hall Prep-aratory School on the UBCO campus) and there are girls in Af-ghanistan who don’t have those opportunities,” she said of her motivation to organize the fundraiser.
“I feel real strongly to-wards them, and I want-ed to do something to help.”
Monaghan’s fundrais-er was a 5 km walk/run through Kelowna’s City Park on a Sunday last month.
She planned the event by herself, and after re-ceiving encouragement from Podmorow, who is still the Little Women for Little Women lead-er, to pursue her goal, she went through the pro-cess of obtaining the ne-cessary permits from the City of Kelowna.
Monaghan rst did volunteer work for Little Women for Little Women at an event last year, and as she began to get more involved from that point had the thought that a walk/run would be a great fund-raiser.
“I felt like it would be a good way to raise
money, because I’ve been to other things like this before and I know that they usually do make a lot of money,” she ex-plained.
“Our event is di er-ent, because 100 per cent goes to charity.”
Monaghan had been hoping to see 15 people participate, and was ec-
static to see 60 people turn up to raise roughly $1,500 for Little Women for Little Women.
She had originally hoped the event might raise $300.
“Along with the other money that Little Women has raised, we train teachers, we pay their salaries and we buy
mobile library kits for schools in Afghanistan,” she said.
“ at means a lot to me. I have opportunities to learn, and they don’t.”

LAKE COUNTRY Judo Club competitor Keith Griechen atop the podium at the World Jiu Jitsu Championships in las Vegas last month.
▼ JIU-JITSU CHAMPIONSHIPS
Griechen top of the world in Jiu-Jutsu after Vegas win
Lake Country’s Kei-th Griechen (top of po-dium) claimed the gold medal at the World Jiu-Jitsu Championships in Las Vegas late last month.
Griechen had a bye in the rst round and then won his next three matches to win the championship in the super heavyweight div-ision.
It was his second straight medal at the event after he won silver last year.
“I vowed to get the gold next time and I did,” said an elated Griech-en, who runs the Lake
Country Judo club. “ is ranks as one of my best martial arts perform-ances in my life.”
About 2,500 com-petitors from around the world took part in the event and Griechen says he had a lot of support to make his win a reality.
“ anks to my wife Kim for her support, my family, my world’s train-ing partner Scott Payer, my Lake Country judo crew, my RDC Jiu-Jitsu crew with coaches Ster-ling Redlack and Kyle Deleurme and Dave Rothwell for coaching Scott and I on the mats in Vegas,” he said.
Mayor James Baker and Lake Country coun-cil members met with Premier Christy Clark and B.C. cabinet minis-ters at the Union of Brit-ish Columbia Munici-palities (UBCM) con-vention in Vancouver last month to address some of the community’s high priority issues.
Among the issues raised was the trans-ference of the previous Highway 97, now known as Pelmewash Parkway between Win eld and Oyama, to the owner-ship and control of the municipality.
Baker said Todd Stone, Minister of Transportation and Infrastructure, under-stood the issue is some-thing the public are in-terested in and the devolution of the road corridor is actively being negotiated between his ministry and the District of Lake Country.
Council was also in-terested in whether handyDART services could be excluded from the current freeze on transit expansion.
Another ongoing con-cern for Lake Country is the diminishing number of family practice doc-tors in the community. Council requested that the Ministry of Health support a multidisciplin-ary clinic pilot project in Lake Country, and con-sider assisting the dis-trict with incentives to attract and retain general practitioners in the com-munity.
e Lake Coun-try delegation met with Premier Clark, City of West Kelowna dele-gates and representatives
of the Okanagan Basin Water Board (OBWB) regarding protection of the economy and infra-structure with increased provincial funding for inspection stations in an e ort to prevent zebra and quagga mussels from infesting Okanagan lakes.
Lake Country also raised the importance of advancing the time-line to build a middle school. As Lake Country is B.C.’s fastest-grow-ing community and the three elementary schools have become over-en-rolled, district council believes a middle school to house the Grade 6 to 9 students is necessary to relieve the pressure on the elementary schools.
“ e face-to-face meetings with the min-isters were encouraging,” said Baker. “Not only was there a high level of awareness of the issues our community is fa-cing, but also agreement to work towards reso-lution of the challenges that are important to our residents.”
In addition to taking care of business matters, Baker received a long-term service award at the UBCM banquet for hav-ing served 25 years as an elected o cial.

With the goal of maintaining it within a cost-of-living range, the 2016 Okanagan Regional Library (ORL) budget calls for a 1.98 per cent increase.
Half of the increase would fund negotiated wage increases for sta , while other increases are related to higher rents and utilities, high-er book and e-resource costs based on in ation and the e ect of the lower Canadian dollar.
ORL’s board of directors met mid-September to review the draft budget put forward by the nance committee. e Lake Country library is a branch of the Okanagan system.
e budget increase also covers the cost of moving furnishing pur-
chases into the regular ORL levy. Currently, these are funded by lo-cal government in a separate pro-cess; ORL board asked for fur-ther clari cation about how such a policy would work be brought to a future meeting.
After the meeting, directors participated in a strategic planning session that included a presenta-tion by Ken Roberts, former CEO of the Hamilton Public Library and member of the Royal Society of Canada’s Expert Panel on the Future of Libraries and Archives in Canada.
According to Roberts, libraries around the world are experiencing a critical shift “from information to imagination, from consumption
to creation, and to increased col-laboration.”
His research indicates librar-ies are becoming places where people connect with technology, can create music, video, or texts, work away from home, collaborate, study, and gather as communities.
While libraries still have a strong role in promoting reading and literacy, statistics show more items are circulating online, which can free up space for new activities.
Public input will be sought to hear what is most important to the ORL communities. e new stra-tegic plan is targeted to be com-plete by February 2016. e next ORL board meeting is scheduled for Oct. 21.

OKANAGAN Adventist Academy students clean up along Postill Lake Road.
When Okanagan Adventist Academy students returned to classes in September, they set to work setting an example for adults.
Thirty Grade 8 to12 students and their teachers hauled furniture, pallets, construction waste and bags of litter out of the bush along Postill Lake Road
and loaded it all into a dumpster donated by 4 Less Disposal.
“A big part of the teaching of our school is to help students nd their purpose,” said Adventist Academy teacher Cherri Gerber. “Taking part in an activity like this helps the students realize that they can make a difference in their own community.”
According to regional waste reduction facilitator Cynthia Coates, it was great to see the cleanup effort by the students.
Coates said 1.2 tonnes of material was hauled out of the area, lling up a 30-yard dumpster.
The Glenmore land ll is open seven days a week to drop off material while the Westside Residential
Waste Disposal and Recycling Centre is open Friday through Monday.
“There is no reason any of this material should be ending up in the bush. These students are cleaning up after adults, folks that are users of this area and should be stewards of the environment,” Coates said.
