Trolleys of the Capital DistrictCOLONIE – The Historical Society of the Town of Colonie cordial-ly invites you to a special presentation by Gino DiCarlo, Trolleys of the Capital District. The talk will take place on Sunday, March 11 at 2pm in the Town of Colonie Library at 629 Albany Shaker Road, Loudonville. From their humble beginnings as horse roads forming belts around Albany, Schenectady and Troy these trolley lines helped move people around Upstate New York from the late 1800’s until their fi nal exit after WWII. Three companies provided hundreds of miles of track as well as direct routes to resorts in the Adirondacks, Lake George and Saratoga Springs. The trolley lines became famous for disasters that made national headlines, labor disputes, and engineering wonders that included the longest trolley bridge in the world. Gino DiCarlo is the author of Trolleys of the Capital District, a historical perspective on the rail systems that once canvassed the Capital District. For more information contact Kevin Franklin, Colonie Town Historian at 782-2601. (A)

Project Easter Bunny Needs Your HelpCAPITAL REGION – Floydwarriors.com “Helping Families Cope With Cancer, One Household at a Time” is very pleased to announce its 3rd annual run of Project Easter Bunny. This Capital District wide effort was begun by fl oydwarriors.com founder Lisa Morahan after experiencing Easter Sunday in 2009 too ill to make one basket up for her son while in the midst of chemotherapy treatment. Several area cancer organizations and hos-pitals caring for cancer patients will receive this year’s bounty so parents and grandparents enduring treatment will have a nice big basket to give their children Easter morning. Willikers Toys in Saratoga, The Paddocks of Saratoga, The YMCA of West Ave in Saratoga (no candy at this location, only healthy treats), The Malta Community Cen-ter, Bella Rouge at Clifton Park Center, and The Hope Club in Latham. Seldom-heard Saint Patrick’s Day factsThere are many things the public knows about Saint Patrick’s Day, but there’s much they may not know about the holiday or Irish-American heritage for that matter. Here are some facts and trivia that might surprise even the most devoted of Patty’s Day revelers.
* Despite St. Patrick being alive centuries earlier, St. Patrick’s Day celebrations didn’t begin until 1737.
* More people of Irish heritage live in the United States than currently live in all of Ireland. Irish-Ameri-cans living stateside predominantly reside in the North Atlantic states.
* Saint Patrick angered the Celtic Druids many times by converting pagans to Christianity. The Druids put him in jail on numerous occasions.
* Green is not the offi cial color affi liated with Saint Patrick. It is really blue. However, green became a familiar hue during the nineteenth century more for being associated with the magic of Irish legends than Saint Patrick himself.
* The three-leaf shamrock has more historical signifi cance with regards to Saint Patrick’s day than a four-leaf clover. That’s because the three leaves were believed to be used by St. Patrick to explain the Christian doctrine of the Holy Trinity, where God exists as three persons.
* For 67 years, Saint Patrick’s Day was a “dry” holiday in Ireland. James O’Mara, a member of Irish parliament, introduced a bill in 1903 that made Saint Patrick’s Day a religious holiday in the country. Therefore, local pubs were obligated to close. The law was overturned in 1970.

Empties for Animals" Campaign To Run All Year!Goldstein Auto Group
Helping Mohawk Hudson Humane Society ALBANY, NY (02/29/2012)- What started out to be a Super bowl campaign to bene t The Mohawk Hud-son Humane Society has snowballed into a year round program for The Goldstein Family Auto Group, Thanks to the hundreds of donations of cans and bottles The Goldstein Family Auto Group has received from the community, coupled with the MHHS 125th Anniversary, Goldstein Auto is committed to continuing their part of the campaign year round. Since coming on board, The Goldstein Fam-ily Auto Group has set up depositories in each of their four dealerships to help collect cans and bottles from patrons, sta , and families, wanting to help the Mohawk Hudson Humane Society in Menands, New York. The cans and bottles turn into dollars for the organization to help care for and place the animals they have at the shelter. "Our Goal for the 125 Anniversary is to encourage the
community to help collect 1,562,500 which would translate into $125,000 to MHHS. " said Stefanie Goldstein, a principal in the Goldstein Family Auto Group and daughter of President Alan Goldstein. "This is only 637,500 more bottles and cans than last year. If everyone continues the momentum we have had already, we can do it!" Last year the Society's "Empties for Animals" program generated over $74,000 in revenue. Individual members of the community, school groups and other organizations dropped o more than 925,000 cans and bottles. Volunteers sorted all those bottles and cans based upon the originating distributor, which in turn generated 8 cents per can/bottle instead of the regular 5-cent redemption fee paid at stores. Monies from the programs were used to bene t the more than 6,500 animals cared for by the Soci-ety in 2011. "As an added incentive The Goldstein Family has commissioned our trucks and driv-ers to make pick ups from around their area neighborhoods, restaurants, schools, event destinations, anywhere they need us to" added Stefanie. "If everyone who does not save their recyclables currently starts saving them, we can make a huge di er-ence." With Earth Day just a few months away, weekly totals received at all Goldstein Auto locations will increase as the group does plan to participate in "A Billion Acts of Green" one of the Earth Day organizations April programs. They are using the power of their advertising, website, facebook page and show rooms to spread the word to recycle and help save abandon, elderly and abused animals rescued and cared for by The Mohawk Hudson Humane Society.People can drop o their cans and bottles to any of the four Goldstein locations:
~ Goldstein Buick/GMC, 1671 Central Avenue, Albany ~~ Goldstein Chrysler Jeep Dodge, 613 Loudon Rd, Latham ~
(across from Ho man's Playland)~ Goldstein Subaru, 1754 Central Avenue, Albany ~

(StatePoint) There’s nothing cozier than sitting indoors with a steaming cup of hot chocolate on a cool winter day. But when the weather outside is frightful, losing power can be uncomfortable, if not downright dangerous.
So how can you help ensure your family a warm and safe winter season?
Prepare
Preparedness is your best de-fense in an emergency situ-ation. Whether you expect an outage or not, you should install storm windows and insulate your home properly for the winter.
Pack an emergency kit that includes nonperishable food and water. The guideline is about one gallon of water per person per day. And don’t forget to have a manual can opener on hand for canned food.
Keep a fi rst aid kit handy and teach all the members of your family how to use its con-tents. A fl ashlight, a battery operated radio, spare bat-teries, and a supply of your medications should round out your emergency kit.
Prevent
You can avoid the danger of an outage with a standby generator that links directly into your natural gas system. The generator will turn on automatically during a pow-er failure or blackout. And with a natural gas genera-tor, you don’t have to worry about running out of fuel like you would with a gasoline or diesel-powered one.
An added benefit of these
Protecting Your Home From Winter Outages
types of generators is that they can serve as eco-friend-ly back-ups for off-the-grid homes powered by alterna-tive energy sources. More information can be found by visiting www.comfortabler-esponsible.org and clicking on “generators.”
Protect
When the power goes out, use common sense and cover up if it’s really cold. Layers are best, starting with long underwear. Don’t forget to wear a hat because most body heat is lost through the top of the head.
Mittens and thick socks will protect your digits. If you
experience a loss of feeling
in your extremities or they
appear unusually pale, seek
medical attention right away.
Likewise, uncontrollable
shivering, slurred speech
and disorientation are signs
of hypothermia and deserve
your immediate attention.
Remember, the best protec-
tion from a power outage is
prevention by relying on a
backup generator as an al-
ternate energy source. But
if your power does go out,
make sure you are prepared
with necessities and snuggle
up with loved ones.

(StatePoint) Between de-manding jobs, school sched-ules, and all of life’s little details, fi nding the time for a family vacation is not always easy. But don’t let that stop you. Not only are vacations fun, they can be benefi cial in a number of ways.
Leisure time is known to re-duce the risk of stress-related health issues and it could even improve your relation-ship. A Harris Interactive poll indicates that women who take more vacations are hap-pier in their marriages.
A great vacation is a terrifi c way to make lasting memo-ries with your family, and per-haps even learn something. By exposing your family to different cultures, cuisines and languages, the experi-ences you have together will improve your understanding of the world.
So sit down and make a list of all the places you want to go as a family. Make a point to check off at least one item on your list this year. If you need inspiration, the new edi-tion of “1000 Places To See Before You Die” by Patricia Schultz is a great place to start, profi ling destinations off the beaten tourist path. For more information, visit www.1000places.com .
Travel can mean anything from relaxing on a beach to going on a safari. Figure out
Make Time For Family Vacationswhat kind of trip you want to take. You can consider more exotic locales like Austria or the Caribbean, or choose the familiar, and opt for a road trip to a nearby state park for a more active vacation.
Don’t think you need to go halfway around the world to have a worthwhile experi-ence.
“The number of miles cov-ered has nothing to do with the real pleasures of travel-- the inherent beauty of the world and the discovery it promises is all around us,” says Schultz.
If you’re on a budget, there are a great number of online resources to help you fi nd the best deals on fl ights, accom-modations and car rentals. A little bargain hunting will go a long way toward putting your dream vacation within reach.
If you don’t have the re-sources to make a trip happen now, open a special savings
account designated for travel and contribute a small portion of every paycheck into it.
“There really is no downside to travel, save a little jet lag and a dented bank account,” says Schultz.
Some quality time with your loved ones on a family vaca-tion will allow you to broad-en your horizons -- probably beyond your expectations.
