The information contained on the following pages details the 2018–2019 selection process for new (1L) and continuing law students. The process provides priority to new incoming law students who deposit by Sunday, April 1, 2018. Beginning on April 3, 2018, all law students (new and continuing) may use the system to deposit, apply, search for roommates, and self-select their own housing assignment for next year. Please read through this guide carefully. The following highlights are important to remember:

■ The entire process is online.

■ The Housing Application will open within 24 hours of satisfying the $500 housing deposit. Law students interested in

securing housing must make their $750 seat deposit prior to filing their housing deposit.

■ This process involves room and bed selection only. Students may choose from spaces in the DePaul Townhouses and in some cases from the Henley Road Residence. A set number of apartments have been designated for law student occupancy only.

■ The Roommate Search Wizard is a search engine that helps you find the right roommate by searching portal profiles. This applies to bedroom roommates only.

■ Students who fail to meet the deposit deadline can sign up for Housing Intent Online. See page 13.

■ There is an online, pre-fall room change/room swap request process. See page 11.

Dear Student,

This guide has been designed to assist you as you navigate the new housing selection process for law students. While we make every effort to accommodate new and returning students, the Office of Residence Life is limited in the amount of University housing we can offer continuing and incoming law students due to increased demand over the last several years.

In response, a new priority selection process is being implemented beginning in 2018–2019 to make housing available to those students who will typically benefit most from the personal and community support of living in University housing. The availability of University housing is a significant consideration for our entering law students every year, and we have an incoming class that includes students from many different states across the country, as well as international students.

First-year students greatly benefit from the campus and community support, and the convenience of University housing can help students as they begin law school. Therefore, we will offer first-year entering law students priority for University housing for the 2018–2019 academic year.

2018–2019 Housing PriorityIncoming law students (new 1Ls) who submit their $500 housing deposit by April 1, 2018, will receive priority for the 2018–2019 academic year. Beginning on April 3, 2018, housing deposits and applications will be accepted from both continuing and incoming law students who are interested in securing University housing. Students will be offered housing in the order of their deposit date, subject to availability.

Housing assignments will be made in early May to provide continuing law students with enough advanced notice to find non-University housing, if needed.

If you have any questions regarding the School of Law housing process, please contact the Office of Residence Life at 718-990-2417 or [email protected].

DEPOSIT

Submit Your $500 Deposit Online Incoming law students will receive priority access to housing until April 1, 2018.

Beginning on April 3, 2018, all continuing law students (and new incoming law students) may make their deposits. All deposits will be ordered by the date and time of their submission to determine ranking for housing selection.

In order to make a deposit, your student account must be free and clear of all balances. Please review any outstanding financial or documentation requirements prior to the Room Selection Deposit period.

Students who are on a payment plan may not pay their deposit online. Please pay in person or call our Customer Service Center at 718-990-2000.

To make the online payment, log in to UIS. Once logged in, please click on the “student” tab, then select “student accounts,” and “student account suite.” The system will redirect you to the Touchnet site. Once redirected, select the “eDeposits” tab, select the “Fall 2018” term, select “Fall Continuing Housing Deposit,” and click submit. It will direct you to payment options.

You may call in your credit card payment to our Customer Service Center at 718-990-2000. Your account will be reviewed for eligibility at that time.

Mailed checks must be made payable to “St. John’s University.” Please include the student ID number and “Fall Housing Selection Deposit” in the check memo line.

DO NOT MAIL CHECKS TO THE MASSACHUSETTS ADDRESS.

Please mail your check to

Office of Student Financial Services St. John’s University 8000 Utopia Parkway Queens, NY 11439

Housing deposits will not be accepted after 4:30 p.m. (EST) on Thursday, April 19, 2018. If you do not provide a deposit by the deadline (late or unable to pay), you will not be eligible to participate in the Housing Selection Process; however, you will be invited to participate in our Housing Intent Process. Sign-up for the Post-Selection Housing Intent Process begins on Monday, April 23, 2018.

Important Note: Students who wish to have their housing deposit returned must submit requests by Friday, April 20, 2018. Housing deposit refund requests received after 4:30 p.m. (EST) on Friday, April 20, 2018, will be declined, and the student will forfeit a refund of the $500 housing deposit. Should the student remain enrolled at the University, the $500 will be credited toward their fall bill.

All other law students who submit a $500 deposit by April 19, 2018, will be ranked in the order of their deposit. All students will receive a notification to their St. John’s e-mail account informing them of their eligibility status on April 20, 2018.

If you satisfied the housing deposit by the deadline and do not have access to the fall 2018 online application and agreement, or have not received an e-mail by April 21, please visit the Office of Residence Life with proof of payment so that we may review your account.

The following conditions would make a continuing student ineligible for the housing selection process:

■ The student has a cumulative Grade Point Average less than a 1.95 at the completion of the Fall 2017 term.

■ The student has conduct sanctions permanently restricting them from University-managed living properties.

Housing Portal Application, Profile, Roommate Search, and Agreement Once students have satisfied the $500 housing deposit for the Fall 2018 term, they will receive access to the portal to complete the online housing application and agreement. Only eligible students will move on in the process to self-selection.

During this step, students are expected to complete their housing application, student profile, and housing agreement. This step in the process must be completed by 4:30 p.m. (EST) on Monday, April 23, 2018.

To access the Fall 2018 Grad/Law online housing application after satisfying the deposit: log into your MySJU account, click on the Reslife tab, then click on the “Access the Housing Portal” link.

Failure to complete your application will prohibit you from participating in self-selection. Students with incomplete applications will be manually placed at the end of the process.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION

Housing Selection Information SessionsInformation regarding the application and roommate search process will be provided during your first community meeting of the spring term. Another information session will be held in your residence hall the week after the deposit deadline to give you an opportunity to ask questions and review the process.

The information sessions will be hosted by your residence director/resident assistants. They will discuss how to select rooms, roommates, and choose a meal plan through the online tutorial. The online tutorial of the housing portal is available on our website.

Missed the Deposit Deadline? The Housing Intent Process is for You!The University will not accept housing deposits after 4:30 p.m. (EST) on Thursday, April 19, 2018. Therefore, if your deposit is not received by the deadline, you will not be eligible to participate in the spring Housing Selection process. If an eligible student requests you as a roommate, you will still not be eligible for housing selection. Please notify classmates of your ineligibility so they may seek other roommate options while in the portal, as you will not be present in their roommate search process.

Students who are unable to pay the deposit by the established deadline may complete a Housing Intent Form. This form will be available online beginning on Tuesday, May 1, 2018. Students who complete the form will be contacted based on availability. Participants in this process can expect to receive a housing offer from the Office of Residence Life—based on availability—between May 2 and August 3.

I Need to Request Special Accommodations for Housing. If you require a specific type of housing accommodation, please contact the appropriate office on your campus. Despite your accommodation needs, you are still required to meet all deadlines for the selection process in order to be eligible for housing placement.

■ All required and complete documentation must be submitted to Office of Disability Services no later than 3 p.m. (EST) on Friday, April 20, 2018.

■ You must register with the Office of Disability Services or with the Center for Counseling and Consultation by providing documentation about your condition and housing accommodation recommendations from your treating physician. Documents must be faxed or mailed to

What if I cannot make my appointment? Log in to the Housing Portal and select your room as soon as possible. For online selection, there is no way to have a proxy sign in to act on your behalf. Once the next person’s appointment time starts, they can select a room, diminishing your potential room choices. If you are not able to select a room prior to the online selection deadline, you will forfeit your opportunity to self-select your space and will be auto-assigned by the online system on Friday, April 13, 2018.

Note: When students confirm each other as roommate pairs in the housing portal the roommate with the earliest selection times can choose the room and place all approved roommates into their bedroom.

What does it mean to be “eligible to participate?” To ensure that you are eligible to participate in the housing selection process, you need to meet all the deadlines and requirements outlined in this packet. “Eligible” means that you have completed the outlined steps; cleared student conduct review; and are qualified for possible participation in the housing selection process. This does NOT guarantee a housing assignment during the housing selection process.

Will St. John’s hold preview nights for students to see examples of rooms and buildings before housing selection? If you are interested in viewing floor plans or our 360° virtual tour, please visit our University Housing page at stjohns.edu/queens-virtual-tour or stjohns.edu/staten-island-virtual-tour before housing selection.

Can I get my deposit back? If you are not eligible or no longer interested in participating in the selection process, you must log into the housing portal and complete the deposit refund request form by Friday, April 20. If you wish to decline your housing, you must request your deposit to be credited back to your St. John’s student account on or before Friday, April 20. Housing deposits are nonrefundable after that date.

Is there parking at DePaul Houses? Prior to the start of the fall semester the Office of Residence Life will provide the Office of Public Safety with a list of all students assigned to DePaul Hall. The Office of Public Safety will run a selection process and offer selected students the opportunity to purchase a parking pass at the DePaul townhouses. For more information on parking, please visit the Office of Public Safety website at stjohns.edu/public-safety/parking-program. For more details, please contact Public Safety at 718-990-6281.

What other transportation options are available? The University operates a free shuttle service for all off campus students. Pick up times and additional details can be found here: stjohns.edu/student-life/resource-center/shuttle-bus-services.

Are there laundry facilities? All second and third floor apartments at DePaul have access to laundry facilities within their apartment. A small number of first floor apartments do not have laundry facilities. Students in these apartments need to be prepared to make alternate arrangements for their laundry needs. Residents in Henley Hall have access to the laundry service in the basement of their building. There is no charge for the use of these services.
