Dog house Prospective view of Dog house which was the first assignment in our class. It was a great experience and introduction to Sketch up.
2
During class we started practicing hand sketching. My first try was not quite good, and Jerry recommended us to draw vertical and horizontal straight lines, and also circles at home.
3
Then I practiced at home connecting dots, drawing vertical and horizontal lines, and also practiced drawing circles between those lines.
4
5
These are the steps that I went through to get the design my dog house
6
7Strengths:
Learned how to work with Push and Pull tool to make the roof, window, and door which was pretty easy and fun
Window and door design
Coloring the house using paint Bucket tool
Using offset to create window frame, and really enjoyed doing frame to the window, looks really neat
Challenges and weaknesses:
I am not really comfortable with using Move tool. I learned that I should select whole thing first and then move the item. Otherwise the shape distorts.
It was a big challenge for me to add measurements, because I have no idea about feet and inches
Crazy cube arrays in space
8
Perspective view within ArrayPerspective view
Plan view Plan view in perspectiveElevation view
9
Strengths:
Successfully created cube, transformed into components, an replicated multiple times to create this complex arrays.
Zoomed into the array, turned my shadows on, and place several human figures for scale to create a dramatic shot
Learned how to duplicate boxes
Learned how to add components, and made a story
Successfully added shadow, and it turned more realistic
Used different camera view and leaned how to export 2D picture
Challenges:
I need to learn how to use graphic visualization techniques to pen draw something similar to what I produce in SketchUp
I had some struggle using Orbit tool
Floor Study
10
Floor pattern researchIt was really fun and useful exercise. Usually it is hard to design something directly, but when I start drawing them, I can explore more ideas as I go further.
11
12
Perspective view of floor studies
13
Strengths:
Practiced a Move and Copy tool which I did not get in previous class
Mastered in Push and Pull tool to create the roof
Used Tape to draw repetitive pattern of the floor
Used Bucket tool to color my floor
Weaknesses:
At first I did some mistake in my wall and copied that wrong model all over, so my
whole houses looked weird
Had a hard time to take a good shot, because the patterns were disappearing
when use my rotate tool
Had trouble to place Steve on the floor. His feet was keep disappearing
Had a trouble to move my copied version by red axis
Challenges:
Use Move and Copy tool Move through right axis Create new design Take good shots
Opportunities:
Practice the Move and Copy tool more. It seemed quite useful
Sketch the pattern on the paper to discover new ideas
Follow Jerry faster

15
Parallel projection from top view showing all the steps Zoomed in view from top the last two steps
Prospective view Elevation view
16
Strengths:
Learned how simplicity can lead to complexity
Introduced with Rotate tool Practiced how to rotate and copy at the
same time
Learned how to do the stairs at the end of the class
Understood how to use Follow me tool Learned how to use Offset tool Learned how to use Arch tool
Weaknesses:
Had trouble with stairs first Good 2D shots
Challenges:
Work fast Use of Rotate, Arch, Offset and Line
tools
Practice stairs using Line and Follow me tools
Create complex shapes
Opportunities:
Practice Follow me tool To work fast I need to know the
shortcuts of the tools on the
keyboard
Malevich inspired construction and Picasso inspired tower
17
In class we worked on Malevich inspired construction which
was quite fun, but in fact that I did not merge the trees in
one layer, I had trouble with using software. It was keep
crushing because of my acres of forest, and I started my
new tower at home
This is Picasso inspired tower that I did at home. It was a lot of fun
18
The left view of the tower in parallel projection The top view in parallel projection The front view in parallel projection
Perspective view with Steve Perspective view showing the dramatic shape of the
tower
The perspective view of waving walls
19
Strengths:
Had a lot fun Mastered in Line tool, and finally understood
what Jerry meant by retracing Learned how to import photo Used Bucket tool to color my buildings Played with different shapes More practice on Push and Pull tool X-ray view is mind-blowing and useful
Weaknesses:
Had a hard time with putting my pieces in Group
It was really hard to choose ground color. It turned really bright and really dark
sometimes
Combination of colors Learned how to make an animation, but
was not as good as expected
Had some trouble working with Two Point Arch
Challenges:
Using Line tool to retrace the shape Using Arch tool to create waive Color up the tower Designing even more complicated
shape using Push and Pool tool
Grouping the shapes
Opportunities:
Work with X-ray tool to find out what is behind and inside
Practice more the Arch tool Be careful with colors. I will use
water bucket next time instead of
coloring them blue
Understand the grouping
Paper airplanes
It was really an interesting class. We learned how to fold a paper airplane on Sketch Up. I experienced different Styles and I really liked the Genetic CAD style, which turns my airplanes black with white stroke. This tuned out to be really masculine, so I tried to make a story. I displayed fog, and also imported JPG images of war. This piece satisfies my a lot. Fog blinds my airplanes into the background image, and decreases the brightness.
20
21
We started our class trying the folding technique using Rotate tool. At first it was quite confusing, but after practicing few times, I understood how to use this tool. Seems fun, but looks like all of us having bad day :D , and we moved to folding airplanes which was much more interesting
22Perspective view from back of the airplanes
Top view in parallel projection
Front view in parallel projection
Left view in parallel projection
23
Then I practiced different Styles
24
Strengths:
Experienced Rotate tool Learned how to change the Style Had fun a lot Learned really fast Taking good shots
Weaknesses:
Confused a little with rotation tool Dont know how to turn back to my first
version
Challenges:
Fold the paper Experience different styles
Opportunities:
More experience on rotation tool Try different styles
Pavilion with folded Canopy
25
26
First we started folding the roof I made some the pallets transparent Perspective view from the back in order to show
the roof transparency
The front view of the pavilion The right view to show the beauty of folded roof The top view with beautiful floor pattern
27
Strengths:
Mastered in Rotate tool Did better animation Put the previous parts in layer that I could
let then disappear without deleting them
Weaknesses:
Later realized that I should have add all the columns in one layer, because it slowed
down by software
Trees were driving me crazy. They were placing below the red axis, and looked awful
in parallel projection.
Challenges:
Folding roof Create better animation Discover the design of the pavilion
Opportunities:
Work with layers Discover my own style without copying
directly from Jerry

Dining room. I spent a lot of time to make the cup board. I am so happy that it looks exactly same as it is.
35
The perspective view of second floor. The first picture from right is my room, the smallest in house. It also has window, but I did not include.
36
I also tried different styles, and I loved it. My favorite is the sketchy one. It looks like hand drawing, and I like the darker finish of every line which look so natural.
37
Strengths: Learned how to use tape in real life Realistic I learned a lot about the standard sizes of door Learned to create furniture Took better shots Became more comfortable with inches and feet Learned to draw floor plan sketch by hand
Weaknesses: It took so long to finish furniture, because they
are really detailed Computer was keep freezing
Challenges: Create furniture Measuring by tape Drawing floor plan by hand Working step by step
Opportunities: Work with tape Learn more about inches and feet More hand sketch Making plan before start on Sketch up Knowing the standard sizes
38
Photo Match
39
The photo match of Reins gallery was really fun class. It was a lot like being a detective. I really loved the way to guess and predict from images. I added more that was not on the photos.
40
This is what I got generally. The perspective view

46
Exploring different styles and taking different shots were the best part. I loved the black and white style
47
48
Strengths: Learned how to use Photo Match tool Guessing predicting Taking good shots Creative I understood that if I want to do photo match, I
should take good pictures in real life
Weaknesses: I was sick one week and I stood behind a little,
but I was so glad Jerry helped me to catch up
Challenges: Being a good detective Comparing Predict the construction lines Thinking creative
Opportunities: Matching every photo that I like
49
Final report
My final report was inspired by
Nicolas Lee. I found the house plan
in www.houseplans.com
It was a lot to finish to do my final
report. This house has 2 floors and
3 bedrooms. It took me days to
finish. I regret a lot, but I am super
happy that I finished. I thought it will
be easier because all the
measurements were online. This is
modern styled house. I loved this
huge window in Great room. I
learned a lot from this project. For
instance, I learned to read the floor
plan, to calculate floor steps basing
on the height of the floor and more.
It was challenging.

Exploring different styles
61
Strengths: Used everything I learned Created layers and groups Mastered in making windows Learned to make stares based on the height Enjoyed 3D components Took better shots
Weaknesses: Choose really hard one Too many windows to finish The components were keep appearing upside
down, and it was freezing every time when I scale them by -1
Challenges: Creating tons of windows Applying all the measurements in the
floor plan Being familiar with standard sizes Creating landscape Working step by step
Opportunities: Practice more
62
This course was just an inspiration for me like a big step forward to my dream. Now I look back to the dog house. It looks so easy and funny. I am so glad that I learned a lot and skilled in Sketch Up. I am quite confident that I can create the design on Sketch Up which has always been in my head. The most fun part was my final assignment. Even though it was hard, I was able to show all my skills on it. The biggest lesson that I learned was split the tasks into smaller parts, and updating portfolio each week. In my next design studio class, I will accomplish it. Cant wait to take design studio class next semester.
