LED HIGHBAYS - ALL YOU NEED TO KNOW

With attractive funding options available, there has never been a better time to upgrade to LED lighting. Compelling reasons to upgrade include:

• High energy costs for warehouse lighting.

• Energy costs rising.

• Ongoing maintenance costs.

• Difficult and costly access.

Solution:

Upgrade to quality LED highbays BUT.…. Which one?

With plenty of options available, there are many traps to avoid ahead of identifying the right highbay for each application.

• The selected highbay must deliver performance to meet or exceed Australian Lighting Standards.

• It must also meet the requirements of the application.

• Lighting levels are influenced by ceiling height, reflective surroundings and obstructions, amongst a raft of other variables.

• Then, we have highbays, lowbays, linear highbays and other LED fittings that can all substitute, under certain applications, for a traditional highbay.

• The most commonly upgraded highbay is a 400W Metal Halide. • If the highbay position remains the same, the LED equivalent should deliver around 20,000 Lumens.

We must talk in Lumens.

• Watts are important, since we need to measure energy savings, but can be deceptive when comparing performance. We will show you why….

For better energy savings we prefer more Lumens and less Watts.

• Efficacy is the term given to the efficiency of converting energy to light.• Lighting products deliver Lumens as a result of consuming energy in Watts.• Consequently, for better energy savings we prefer more Lumens and less Watts.• If a highbay consumes 200 Watts to deliver 20,000 Lumens, the efficacy is calculated by dividing the

Lumens by the Watts, which in this case gives 100 Lumens per Watt. (100lm/W)

CHOOSING CORRECTLY FOR THE APPLICATION

WANT TO SAVE EVEN MORE ENERGY?

Engaging the support of lighting designers will ensure the best solution for the job.

• Linear LED highbays with lens control can reduce the light count for warehouses with pallet racking.

• Round LED highbays are perfect for open warehouse areas.

• A combination of both with pallet racking may deliver greater energy savings and performance than round highbays alone.

Then, choose a dimmable highbay. Later, you’ll have the option to reduce your energy use even more.

• Connect control gear such as movement sensors and daylight sensors to reduce energy consumption even further.

• LED highbays offer ‘instant on’ but they don’t have to switch off completely. They can be set with control gear to dim down to 10%, for example, until movement is detected.

BUT, only if the dimmable model is purchased in advance.

FOOD SAFE AND WATER PROOF?

Take care with the retrofit environment. There may be particular requirements that are not immediately obvious. Engage LED experts if in doubt.

• Ensure that food safe environments upgrade to the correct LED highbays using optical grade polycarbonate lens, not glass.

• IP65 rated highbays should be selected for use in harsher environments where fine dust and moisture are present.

• Applications such as sporting venues where there is risk of impact should have ‘IK rated’ highbays installed. Check the specifications for IK ratings. IK08 and above is the target.

COMPARE APPLES WITH APPLES

SO, YOU DON’T HAVE 400W METAL HALIDE HIGHBAYS?

lumitex.com.au | FREE CALL 1300 337 809 | +61 8 9250 4178 | +61 8 9463 1464 (Fax)

Knowing the comparisons between similar products will ensure that you are getting the right product for your application.

• LED highbays offer warranties starting from 3 years. Back-up support varies considerably.

• Dimmable drivers cost more.

• ‘Brand name’ drivers cost more but in many cases offer higher Ta ratings, longer warranty or better reliability.

• The true 1-for-1 LED replacement for Metal Halide is around 20,000 Lumens. A 16,000 Lumen LED highbay may cost less but may not meet Australian lighting Standards for retrofit jobs.

• An example of the point above – in a 60 highbay warehouse, replacing 400W MH highbays with 16,000 Lumen highbays will reduce the light output by the equivalent of twelve 400W metal halide highbays compared to using the 20,000 Lumen highbay.

• For new builds, you will need to buy more of the 16,000 Lumen highbays to meet Standards than a 20,000 Lumen highbay.

• More lights to install = higher installation cost.

LED highbays are available in various Lumen output packages and appearances.

• There is a model to replace 250W to 1000W of traditional lighting technology.

• A site audit will reveal exactly what model is required for a successful upgrade to LED.

• There are LED highbays for aircraft hangars, food processing facilities, cold storage environments, gymnasiums and retail applications, to name a few.

• Accessories are available to suit all hanging scenarios. Chains, hooks, loops, poles and brackets can be ordered to suit the application.

CHECK THE ‘TA’ RATING

REFLECTOR OR NO REFLECTOR?

LED HIGHBAYS - ALL YOU NEED TO KNOW

All LED highbays are not created equal. The Ta rating is the maximum recommended ambient air temperature the manufacturer has applied to the fitting.

• This is important if the highbay is intended for use in harsh temperature environments.

• Most LED highbays offer a Ta of 45ºC. Some are higher.

• Choose a highbay that is fit for purpose.

The selection process for highbays with reflectors is best performed by lighting software analysis. This will ensure adequate uniformity and avoid dark spots which may not meet Australian Standards.

• The technical advancement and use of multiple SMD (Surface Mount Device) LED chips has allowed the rapid uptake of wide beam highbays. These products do not require a reflector.

• However, reflectors can assist to reduce glare in critical applications.

• Wide beam highbays can be used for lower ceiling installations as a ‘lowbay’ replacement.

• Care must be taken when using LED highbays with reflectors to ensure the correct product is chosen according to the ceiling height.

• Highbay reflectors are available in several beam angle control options.

The combination of quality components and good design will deliver the expected performance and reliability.

• There is more to worry about than the driver and the chips.

• Assuming a good brand combination has been selected, eg, Meanwell driver, Lumileds or Nichia chips, etc, focus should shift to highbay construction.

• Construction analysis is far more complicated to assess. It relates to thermal management, PCB design, QC and QA system management.

• Purchasing from a reputable supplier will guarantee back-up support should any technical assistance be required.

Engage LED experts to present all the options, supported by lighting designs where necessary.

• Consider the important payback period. Efficacy plays a big part.

• Choosing on price alone may be misleading.

• Select the right highbay for the application.

• Decide if the dimmable option is important for the future, or not.

LED HIGHBAYS - ALL YOU NEED TO KNOW

LINEAR HIGHBAYS

ROUND HIGHBAYS

Linear highbays are purpose designed for high density warehouse racking applications.

They feature an elongated beam angle specifically intended for high racking applications, ensuring the light projects down in between the racks and not on top of them. The following lighting contour explains the effectiveness of a linear highbay (see opposite).

For open area warehousing applications, round illumination contours are still preferred to achieve desired uniformity levels.

Wide beam highbays use the latest LED technology to deliver incredible efficiency and clarity in the conversion of energy to light.

Polycarbonate covers may be preferable where contamination due to unforeseen breakage of a glass cover cannot be accepted.

Highbays with an IP65 ingress rating are essential foruse in harsh environments where the fitting may be at high risk of water contact, or if the fittings may need to be washed down during scheduled cleaningmaintenance.
