4-H has something for everyone! From archery to animals, cooking to exploring the outdoors, 4-H is about challenging your comfort zone, learning more about things you are interested in, meeting people that share those interests, and having fun! 4-H is a project-based youth organization, which means members choose a project to focus on. Our concept of Learn to Do by Doing has expanded from our rural roots to include more than 50 project options available today.4-H is one of Canada’s largest and longest-running youth organizations. Beyond their club, 4-H’ers have opportunities to earn scholarships and attend activities, events, conferences, and competitions across Saskatchewan, Canada and beyond.

Become a MemberYouth, ages 6 - 21, can make new friends through club involvement, develop life skills through hands-on projects, and open doors to new opportunities through 4-H.

Become a 4-H LeaderThere is an urgent need for volunteer leaders across Saskatchewan. You don’t need to be an expert; any adult willing to share their time and enthusiasm can volunteer. Leaders provide guidance, support, expertise and feedback to 4-H members, as they accomplish their goals. Leaders have access to many resources to help them in their role.

There are approximately 200 4-H clubs all across Saskatchewan with several in the Yorkton area. Contact the 4-H Office to find a 4-H club near you. If there is not a club in your area offering the project(s) you are interested in, start your own 4-H club. Anyone can start a 4-H club for any project(s) that they choose with only one adult leader and four youth members. We have many helpful resources to help you as you start your club.

PATRICK PARK DISC GOLF COURSEContact: www.facebook.com/PatrickParkDiscGolf

Looking for a relaxing way to get outdoors, have a great deal of fun, not spend a lot of money, and have some competition too? Then you might want to pick up a golf disc and head to Patrick Park Golf Course in the city.Patrick Park Disc Golf Course was opened in June 2011, and the original nine basket course has proved a challenge for experienced disc golfers, and yet forgiving for beginners since the course does not have hazards where discs can be lost. The initial course covers 2379 feet, and is a par-27.In 2015, in cooperation with local disc golfers, and the support of the City, alternate tee placements were installed, effectively extending the course to an 18.“The new tees were installed to offer variety, and a greater challenge,” explained Calvin Daniels, one of those involved in the design work.“The ‘back-nine’ brings a number of new elements into play on the course, including new out-of-bounds areas

and mandatory elements, so it’s a whole new experience.”The complete rules can be found on the scorecards at the course. For those unfamiliar with the sport disc golf, also known as frisbee golf, “is a flying disc game, as well as a precision and accuracy sport, in which individual players throw a flying disc at a target. According to the Professional Disc golf Association, “The object of the game is to traverse a course from beginning to end in the fewest number of throws of the disc.”If you are intrigued by the idea of disc golf, but have never played, you are encouraged to head out to the course Tuesday evenings.“It’s sort of a general gathering night,” said Daniels. “There are always players with extra discs that newcomers can borrow for the night, and players are more than willing to help show the basics of the game.”

Patrick Park Disc Golf Course Continued from Page 23In addition to the ‘fun night’ on Tuesdays, which will be in its second year, there are plans for a more competitive evening to grow the sport in that direction. Check www.facebook.com/PatrickParkDiscGolf/ for details as spring approaches. For those wanting to try the game, discs can also be picked up at the City’s Parks Shop at 263 Myrtle Avenue during regular business hours. In addition, the Yorkton course is smack dab in the centre of the newly formed Parkland Association of Disc Golf, (PADG), an organization created to support and promote courses and the sport in an area with a 125 kms radius of the city.“We’re pretty excited to have formed the group,” said Daniels who is also interim chair of the PADG. “We see it as a great tool to grow the sport which is already taking huge strides in the region. In May 2015 there were only three courses in the PADG area. By the time the snow came last fall there were 10 courses to play, and by this fall it is anticipated there will be at least 20. That is phenomenal growth.”Again a list of courses is on the Facebook page.Daniels said it shows the sport has much to offer from relatively low course initial costs, to low costs for participants.“A set of starter discs (driver/midrange/putter) will generally be under $50, and disc golf really is something all ages can participate in, and of course it’s outdoors in the fresh air too.”The PADG is also working to establish a series of tournaments at courses in the area. The first of the tournaments planned is a Birdie Bash at Springside May 29, and then on Aug. 27 the second annual Trilogy Challenge will be held in Yorkton. Other area events will be finalized in the coming weeks.“We had 35 golfers out on relatively short notice last summer, and it was great fun,” said tourney chair Trevor Lyons. “We had golfers in from Regina, Battlefords and Benito, MB., so that shows the draw of disc golf.“This year we hope to have 50-plus participants.”Anyone seeking additional information on the sport, wanting details of upcoming tournament events, or help in starting a plan for a new area course can email [email protected].

The Sunrise Cycle Club is an adult leisure cycling club that hosts group rides every Wednesday evening starting at 7:00 p.m. from the Yorkton Public Library. The Wednesday evening rides last for approx. 1-2 hours and the mileage depends on the skill level of the participants. We usually take to the city streets and cycling paths as well as doing some highway miles when the riders feel ready. The Club invites anyone that wishes to come out and ride for as long as they feel comfortable. Cyclists must have a bike in good repair, wear a helmet and carry a small repair kit with them. “We ride as a group and we don’t leave anyone behind” states club President Terry Ross, “we want everyone to ride within their means and build up strength as the season goes on.”Besides the Wednesday night club rides the cyclists also plan longer rides ranging from 50-100 kms on weekends. Mountain bike rides to our local parks and trails are planned as the weather permits and riders commit.Last years long distance rides included a round trip to Melville and back and several club members took on the Riding Mountain MS Challenge near Dauphin. The Sunrise Cycling Club does mainly road riding and the club has several road bikes to rent out to riders for an afternoon or weekly basis. Membership is encouraged to

support the equipment and provide insurance to the rider. For availability of the bikes or more information contact: [email protected] Sunrise Cycle Club is a leisure riding club but if there is enough interest there can be rides designated to more formal training and distance rides on different nights. “Depending on the membership, the club organizes the rides according to the interest and goals of it’s members, we welcome anyone interested in coming out for some exercise with like minded individuals, meet new friends, see new place in and around the city and go further than you may have gone alone.”

WHY DO I NEED A MONITORED HOME SECURITY SYSTEM?

In today’s world, it’s absolutely vital to take positive steps to ensure the safety of your family and property. An alarm system monitored by Gardon Securities can provide you with the protection and peace of mind you deserve.

Did You Know…• 1 out of 250 homes will experience damage or loss due to fire.• 1 in every 4 homes will be targeted for a property crime.• 1 burglary occurs in North American homes every 13 seconds.• Carbon monoxide poisoning kills nearly 500 people each year.Statistics show that a home with a monitored security system is three times less likely to be burglarized. A monitored residential alarm system provides the maximum protection for you and your family.

How an Alarm System WorksA residential alarm system has four parts - window/door sensors, a motion detector, the alarm unit, and a control panel with display and keypad. Gardon Securities works with you to select a secure place to install the alarm unit, as well as a convenient location near an entryway for the keypad. Whether your alarm self-activates or you initiate the call for help, your alarm system will seize your phone line and dial the Gardon Securities monitoring centre. Following strict procedures, our professional dispatchers act quickly to contact you and verify your alarm signal and situation. Within seconds after your signal, the appropriate police, fire, medical, or other authorities are on their way to your home.

What You Need in an Alarm SystemGardon Securities has a solid reputation for a fast, efficient response to every alarm. That’s why people say, “When seconds count, you can count on Gardon.” In a true emergency, response time is critical. Our professional operators are trained to act quickly with precision and confidence whenever our Monitoring Centre receives an alarm signal.

Information AccuracyTo ensure an accurate response, our advanced monitoring equipment inter-prets and records each signal received, while our operators rapidly access account information to relay vital facts to the authorities.

System ReliabilityGardon Securities quality and performance meets or exceeds Canadian Standards Association strict requirements for all electronic safety and security equipment. We maintain the latest monitoring technology with triple-redundant systems.

Insurance DiscountsMany insurance companies will offer you a discount of up to 25 percent when you have a home or business security system that protects you against intrusion and fire. Check with your insurer for details on how your insurance rates will be discounted.

Peace of Mind While TravelingA monitored security system will help protect you whether you are at home or away. If you travel often and the house is empty, our monitored systems can help prevent intrusion, fires, floods, and damage due to low temperatures. If you travel and leave loved ones or pets at home, using the stay mode feature on our security system allows you to be protected from home invasions while roaming freely inside your home.
