Parks & Recreation ADVISORY BOARD The City of Chesapeake Parks and Recreation Advisory Board, a 16-member advisory body appointed by City Council, makes recommendations relative to planning of facilities and programs and makes policy for the department’s athletic rules and regulations. They also review and endorse the department’s annual operating budget. Meetings are regularly scheduled for 6 p.m., on the fi rst Thursday of each month at designated Community Centers. April – Camelot Community Center; May-August meetings held at South Norfolk Community Center.

Chesapeake Parks and Recreation…What a Deal!Health and Fitness Room – All Community Centers offer a health and fi tness room with free weights, universal weight station equipment and aerobic equipment such as ellipticals, bikes and treadmills.

Game Room – All Community Centers have a game room that offers such equipment as video games, pool tables, bumper pool tables, foose ball tables, table tennis and air hockey tables.

Gymnasium – All Community Centers offer an offi cial size air conditioned gymnasium used for such activities as basketball, volleyball, and Pickleball®. Open play schedules are available for all age groups at each Community Center.

We encourage individuals who are interested, to read and become familiar with these rules and policies. Copies may not be removed from the centers. Questions? WANTED: Volunteer CoachesWe need volunteers to serve as head coaches and assistant coaches. Parks and Recreation provides training for all coaches and depends on volunteers to provide the leadership and guidance for our youth teams. Please consider reg-istering as a coach! Complete a Coaches Application Form at any community center or online at www.cityofchesapeake.net/sports, “Coaches Information.” The city will conduct a criminal history background check.You may request a certain age group and your child will be placed on your team, if you wish. SOFTBALL LEAGUESOFTBALL LEAGUEChesapeake Parks & Recreation co-sponsors a 50 & Above Senior Soft-

ball League with the Tidewater Senior Athletic Association on Sun-day afternoons at Indian River High and Greenbrier Park softball fi elds. The league has grown to 16 teams divided into separate competition levels who play April 29 - Sept. 9, 2012. There is no residential requirement, safety bases are used at 1st/home and

Now, parents may visit ANY Chesapeake Community Center during their seasonal operation schedule and drop off Athletic registration forms for any sport. Registrations will be accepted up until the cut-off date listed for each sport.

*Tackle Football players must be present at registration to be weighed. Registration schedule: July 24, 26, 28, 2012. If you are unable to make these dates, accommodations may be made by calling the Athletic Offi ce at (757) 382-8375.

General Information is one of Chesapeake’s greatest

sources of pride and a Virginian-Pilot newspaper “Best of” winner every year since 2004. Outdoor enthusiasts fi nd it all in our 763-acres of woodland and water—our full-service park with miles and miles of green and blue trails.

Boating: Paddle along our inland lake – Rental: Canoes/Kayaks/paddle boats.

Cabins: AC/heat, microwave oven, sink, refrigerator, queen bed, futon & dining area. Camping: Open April 1 – Nov 30; 66 sites for family camping with electric hook-up available and 6 group sites.

Equestrian area: Available to horse owners; day and yearly passes available. (membership required) Fishing: Fish our DGIF stocked lake for bass, blue gill, crappie, & catfi sh. Fishing license required (Park does not sell licenses.) Hiking: Hiking along the park’s many trails brings nature up close. More than 7 miles of winding trails available. 18-hole miniature golf course: “Dude Ranch” Only $3 per round! Picnicking: Have lunch near the river front! INDIAN RIVER PARK; 1709 Rokeby Ave. A crew from the Eastern Virginia Mountain Bike Association has formally adopted IRP, one of the only parks in South Hampton Roads that features changes in elevation popular with mountain bikers. Four times a year, they organize Trail Day clean-ups to help maintain the park. Volunteers often use their own tools – chainsaws and leaf blowers – to cut up logs and clear trails. Adopt-A-Park is a great way to promote community involve-ment in maintaining and beatifying our parks.
