Ten popular theories about how Vero Beach got its name:1. Vero named after Vera, wife of Henry Gifford. Actually, her name was Sarah. 2. Postal regulations required four letters. Nope … not until 1894 for “shorten” names – Vero named in 1891. 3. Friend of Gifford family was Vera Leinbach. Named it after her, became Vero because of typographical error.4. Hurricanes “veered” away, so called it Vero.5. Vero in Spanish means fur-bearing animal. There were numerous otters on the Indian River. 6. Vero in Portuguese means warm summer climate. I like this one.7. Florida’s first Catholic Archbishop Augustin Verot (pronounced Vero) 1804-1876. First Bishop of St. Augustine. Vero was a part of the diocese.8. “Vero” family from Warwickshire, England are guessing it might be someone in his or her family. Could not be verified.

9. Friend Charles Gifford states his mother Sarah loved Italian literature and could speak Latin. She gave the town its name. Veritas is the plural form of the Latin word Verus. The adverb for Verus is Vero, which means, in truth, really, indeed or in fact. It would be interesting to understand why she felt Vero was a place for truth. See No. 10.10. When time was close for Henry Flagler to lay

tracks in Indian River County, the barrier Island people were upset he considered the west side of the river. In the 1890s newspapers, a letter to the editor said: “Why, all of the fruits and vegetables were being grown on the east side on the islands. How were they going to travel across the river in time to catch the train? After all, no one on the mainland was really selling very much.” Signed by “Veritas” and “Progress.”

Six bite-size Lemmon Drops to nibble on while waiting for traffic on U.S. 1 to start thinning out:

• Did you happen to notice on the front page which issue this is? It’s No. 26 … which means this publication is six months old. Now I see why kids are always so proud to put a “half” on their age. It has been an incredibly satisfying six months. The feedback from readers has been immensely gratifying. The great thing is, more and more people are discovering Lemmon Lines each week. What’s important to understand about this free publication is, it wouldn’t exist without the support of advertisers. As I said way back in Issue 1, I want Lemmon Lines to be the best advertising vehicle for local businesses. Now that “the season” is mostly over, the confidence level of local businesses will go down a notch or two. For some,

it’s the start of hand-wringing season. That includes Lemmon Lines. If you enjoy reading this publication on a weekly basis, I have a favor to ask. Please take a look at the advertisers on these eight pages and see if there are any you can support. Think of it as a “circle of life”-kind of thing. You support advertisers, and, hopefully, they’ll continue to support this newsletter. In turn, Lemmon Lines will be there for you 52 weeks a year. Publishing Lemmon Lines has been a tremendous amount of fun. (Truth be told, I’m having the time of my life.) But, as a business owner, I’ve never been through a summer before. I’d be lying if I said it wasn’t a little scary. • Did you know a production of the musical “Memphis”

opens this week at both the Riverside Theatre in Vero Beach and the Kravis Center in West Palm Beach? Call it a scheduling fluke. “I would say it’s as rare as winning the lottery, maybe even less,” said Oscar Sales, the marketing director at Riverside Theatre. “The companies that hold the rights to shows are very careful to make sure things like this don’t happen. Although the tour was coming to Kravis, their dates were not finalized when we were given permission to do the show.”• I had a “What are the odds?”-type experience last week at Bob Evans. I was interviewing John Houx for the “Meet me at Table 51” feature on page 6. There at the exact same time was Steve Schwartz, the subject of last week’s “Meet me at Table 51.”• It had been several weeks since I interviewed 8-year-old Christian Letts for a book club that Sharon Letts operates out of the family’s business, Treasure Coast Jewelers & Music (you know, the distinctive tropical-pink building on

U.S. 1 in Vero Beach). While dropping off a copy of last week’s issue at the store, Christian – a second-grader at Osceola Magnet School – was there. “Hello, Mr. Lemmon,” he said as I walked in the door. I was thoroughly impressed. What great business instincts!• Barbara McElroy wants to know (and perhaps you do, too): Whatever happened to “No Shoes, No Shirt, No Service”? In recent weeks, Barbara and her husband, Baron, have spotted barefoot people in a fast-food restaurant, a bank and a pharmacy. “No Shoes, No Shirt, No Service” is not a law. Rather, it’s a decision left up to individual businesses.• Here’s why the Lemmons won’t be renewing their “membership” to Sam’s Club when it expires in a few months: Gas prices are usually about a dime per gallon cheaper at the Walmart in Sebastian. Sorry, Sam’s Club, but that’s not right.

Meet me at Table 51

Some trivia: Whether at Bob Evans or C.J. Cannon’s, Russ and his wife usually eat breakfast at Table 51. In what will be an occasional feature, Russ breaks bread with someone you may or may not know.

If only his high-school classmates could see him now. John Houx loves performing in plays? No way! He might have been the biggest introvert at the Choate School in Wallington, Connecticut. “I was deathly afraid of public speaking,” he said. “I was afraid to sing along in church even.” This, despite having the same speech teacher as another Choate student, John F. Kennedy. John Houx, who served three years in the Navy and three years with the organization CARE (in Colombia and Turkey), spent most of his working life at Wall Street firms. Late in his career, he started his own stock-trading company. He moved to Vero Beach in 1996 and became involved in

the Opera Guild, which needed someone to help with publicity. When they needed someone to play Dick Deadeye in “H.M.S. Pinafore,” John volunteered. “I loved it,” he said. It motivated him to seek roles in plays such as “Oliver,” “Damn Yankees” and “I Never Sang for My Father.” Now, at age 80, he has taken on his most challenging role.

He plays Morrie Schwartz, a former Brandeis University professor, who is dying from amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS, or Lou Gehrig’s disease), in “Tuesdays with Morrie.” Jim Daly plays sportswriter Mitch Albom, who, in a bestselling book, wrote about reconnecting with Schwartz before he died. The 90-minute play is scheduled for April 10-12 at the Vero Beach Theatre Guild. John says he might call it quits after this one. “I can’t see ever getting a role as good as Morrie,” he said. “It’s very rewarding.”

Russ Lemmon, who loves music (and lists), spent a lot of time putting together his Top 500 favorite songs of all-time. For the next few years, Lemmon Lines will be counting ‘em down.

425. “Greatest Love of All”(1986) Whitney HoustonMemory: If Whitney hadn’t recorded it, the George Benson version would have made the list.424. “Everybody’s Free (to Wear Sunscreen)”(1999) Baz LuhrmannMemory: If I had to describe it in a word, it would be “cool.” What great advice for high school graduates.423. “Crazy on You”((1976) HeartMemory: Would probably make my Top 10 list for best “air guitar” songs.
